A house made entirely of brown wood stood at the center of a compound. A makeshift fence 15 inches in height, made of different wood pieces surrounded the house.
This was the house Alex and his parents lived in. There weren't many houses built with bricks or cement in Marko Town, it was a small town after all and most of the houses were made by the occupants themselves. Compared to other houses, Lucius' house was a paradise. It had a clean lawn surrounding its sides and a few shady trees and a little garden by the corner. The house looked strangely magnificent and out of place in Marko Town. Alex sat on the lawn, leaning on one of the trees. It was getting to evening which made the air a bit cool. He stared into oblivion recollecting the events of the day. It had always been a habit of his. 'Today was one hell of a ride. I got my ass kicked by a girl. Haha,' Alex thought with a self-deprecating laughter. 'well, at least I'll be joining an Academy so it isn't an all-round loss' Alex sighed and breathed in deeply, inhaling the fresh air in the environment. He loved the environment, it was calm, and peaceful and brought him closer to nature. The only thing he felt bad for not having, was someone his age to talk to or a pet even. No matter how much he loves the quiet, he would be lying if he said he didn't feel lonely at times. Alex suddenly heard the sound of the wooden door creaking open. He looked at the house and saw his dad coming towards him. His hands were clasped at his back, the sun shining on his red hair making it glow a bit. Lucius had a smile on his face that parted his lips, slightly displaying his pearly white teeth. If Alex didn't know better he would have thought his Dad was some elegant, majestic King. There was this graciousness and charm in the way he did things. Not wanting his dad to one-up him in the charms department, Alex shook those thoughts away. "Why are you smiling like a monkey that just discovered a bunch of bananas, Dad?" "Haha, for someone who got his ass handed to him, you sure have jokes. Ah! A monkey can never compare to my grandeur and magnificence," Lucius comically replied. "Don't mind this father of yours, you did marvelously well, my dear!" Amaya who was some distance away said as she walked towards the duo. "Thanks, Mom," Alex said. The husband and wife stood before their son until Lucius broke the silence. He grinned at Alex "We come bearing gifts," Alex looked at the both of them with raised brows. "Uh...I don't see any gifts. Don't tell me you hid them in your pants." Alex replied. "Hahaha...now why would I do that? Don't be silly, son. Anyway, ladies first, so let your mom go ahead." "Alright then," Amaya said with a smile. "I've got something special for you" There was a black ring on her left index finger, it had a bluish-black crystal at its top with several weird drawings etched on it. She took it off and handed it to Alex. Alex stood up from the lawn and collected the ring, he looked down at it with a curious gaze. "Mom, what's this? I know it's a ring but I've never seen any like it" "That ring is called a storage ring. Just like the name implies, its purpose is to store objects and materials" Amaya explained. "Wow, thanks a lot, Mom!" Alex smiled and jumped into his mother's embrace. "Don't thank me yet, the main gift is inside the storage ring" Lucius and Amaya explained to Alex how to use the ring. It was a simple and basic process. All one had to do was send their intent to the ring, and then they'd be able to see its contents. A storage ring has a summoning function that is to be used when one wants to take out an object from the ring and this function is connected to the will of the bearer of the ring. The same was the case if one wanted to store an object inside the ring. After the explanation, Alex tried out the process and he was amazed by what was inside the ring. "Those are gifts from your dad and I. Since you would be joining an Academy, you'd need what is in there. Life in an Academy is not as dreamy as it sounds but I know, we know, you'll do great" Amaya said. Inside the ring were a few books with techniques and teachings for crafting and forging. Then there were blue coins, hundreds of them probably. Alex didn't bother to count them as his attention was drawn to something else inside the ring. He willed it forth and in his hand appeared a pendant. It was pitch black and at the end was a graven little book that was attached to it. Looking closely, Alex could see red engravings of a strange creature that had bat-like wings. He couldn't make sense of the rest of the engravings. "What's this one?" Alex asked inquiring about the pendant. "Oh, that. It's a family heirloom that was passed down to me and now it's yours. It's nothing special but do cherish it, you know, although it wasn't made by me, the craftsmanship is something I've never seen before," Lucius replied. "Speaking of excellent crafting. I made this for you." Lucius released his hands that were clasped at his back revealing a katana sword in its scabbard and handed it to Alex. Alex held the sword with both hands, his eyes gleaming with joy. He unsheathed the sword revealing a lustrous steel blade. Alex could feel the slight energy it radiated. It wasn't an ordinary sword. "You like it?" His dad asked grinning already. Alex nodded but his eyes remained glued to the blade. "It's an azure-grade basic weapon of light weight, as such, it focuses on speed, sharpness and nimbleness." Lucius explained. Alex ran his fingers on its surface, feeling the cold steel. He did a quick slash and the sound of the blade cutting air was heard. slowly placing the sword back in its scabbard, Alex smiled happily at his parents. "Mom, Dad, thank you so much. You guys are the best. I promise to make both of you proud in the Academy" The trio embraced each other under the shade of the tree as a gentle wind passed by. He would miss them, with them around everything seemed easy and went smoothly. The following day which was the day Alex was to leave for Holster Academy, his mom prepared delicious meat soup for him and packaged another which was stored in Alex's ring. Before Gavin, the old man who is the representative of Holster Academy came by, Amaya and her husband had a small talk with their son. "Alex, before you go you should know that the Academy isn't an easy place for people with low societal standing. For us from small towns like this, it depends on our talent and hard work," Lucius said as he poured himself a cup of coffee. Took a sip and relaxed on the couch which was opposite the center table. "But for you. You are a talented son after all you are a Pendragon. Your mom and I expect great things from you. So go out there and make us proud, son!" "I'll do my best and make you both proud, you don't need to worry about me," Alex replied excitedly. "Come here, my little boy." A loving smile hung on Lucius' lips while Amaya stood up from the couch and gave Ale
The large gates of Holster Academy were opened after the Spade made a loud honk. They drove into the Academy and were stopped by a guard dressed in dark blue light armour. The side window of the Spade was rolled down and Gavin showed the guard a pass card. After that, they took a left turn before coming to a stop. "Listen up!" Gavin said. "Those of you who were recruited through the Selection will need to be registered before being accepted into your new status as official students of Holster Academy. One of the students here will lead you to the Administrative block to be registered." "I'll lead them, Instructor Gavin!" one of the students volunteered. It was the boy who kept stealing glances at Alex during their ride to the Academy. "Good. Now leave, I'll also be coming to the Administrative block soon." Gavin said, and pressed on one of the control buttons and the doors of the Spade opened up. Alex, the other two teenagers, and the student, Tang, alighted from the vehicle
The next person to step out was another girl, although not as confident as the girl Zelah, she also didn't seem tense compared to the others. She stood before the machine and stretched her arm pointing at the red circle. Some seconds later, a small ball of water had formed in front of her palm and the ball of water was shot straight at the machine. The machine once again counted as the numbers rolled up and came to a halt at 35. "Wow, that's a high score!" Tom said surprised at what he saw. The others seemed to agree with him and nodded. "Next person," Instructor Blake called out, staring at the remaining three. The girl or more accurately, the lady that came from Marko Town with Alex and Tom decided to go next as she noticed the boys weren't bulging. She like the other girls before her took a stance and then charged at the machine. She threw her fist out and hit the red circle spot on. But unlike the others, her score was lower than that of Zelah who scored 11. 'Her ability
Abilities were a strange but normal occurrence in the world of Clodia. Research had been carried out on why they existed and why one had to be at the age of 15 before they could awaken an ability. It was a topic shrouded in a mystery that scientists and researchers have yet to come up with a valid reason for. There have been few occurrences when one would awaken their ability earlier and some later than they should have. These variable occurrences made it harder to pinpoint why humans developed abilities and at the age, they awoke them. "Don't feel down, although I have not seen a result such as yours, it could mean you are just a late bloomer. I believe with time you will awaken an ability." Instructor Blake said in a bid to comfort Alex. But deep down, Alex knew the truth. Was there any hope for him? He once had an ability, he was sure of it. He awoke an ability and all of a sudden, it disappeared out of the blue. These feelings weighed him down. He was in a world where only
The proposal made by Tang was generous and nice, after all, Holster Academy was a large place with lots of buildings. Alex and Tom accepted his offer and walked with him. "Do you mind showing us the boy's dormitory so we can drop our luggage?" Tom asked. "I don't mind, I'll take you there right away" Tang replied. The duo followed Tang as they transversed through the Academy. They were greeted with sights they had never seen before. "There are so many students," Alex whispered under his breath and it seemed like Tang heard him because of what he said next. "Yes, Holster Academy has about 50 thousand students aside from the new students that would be joining this period." Not long after, Tang, Alex, and Tom arrived in front of a black gate with fenced walls. Inside was a large semi-circular building. It was fenced around giving it plenty of space both at the center and around the building. It was a cluster of rooms fixated with three storeys. "This is the dormitory of fi
As Tom ran away with the ring securely in his hands, his heart raced faster than it had ever raced in his entire life. He felt a bit guilty for running away and leaving Alex all alone with the two bullies.'I scored higher on the test, I should be the one protecting him, why am I running away like a scared cat? Why did I even listen to him? And out of all, I thought Tang was a nice guy, why is he doing this?'There were a lot of 'whys' in Tom's head that he was losing focus, he didn't even have an idea of where he was going. He just let his fast speeding legs lead him. That was until his small framed body crashed into that of someone else making him stop dead in his tracks and stumble backward, almost falling on his bottom.Tom had expected to see the person fall due to the force of the impart. He was indeed running at his top speed, but the person stood erect, unmoved by the impact."What's the hurry for, Kiddo?" The sound of
Alex was surprised that it turned out to be Instructor Blake who brought him to the Infirmary. He was a bit certain that the little boy she spoke of was Tom. Although Tom was indeed a teenager, he was often called little by others due to his small and lanky body frame. 'I told him to run away with the ring. Did he go to call for help? If it wasn't for him, maybe I'd be dead right now..' Alex thought feeling grateful. "I'll leave you to get more rest, you need to fully recover and heal up any internal injury," May said as she left the sick bay. Alex laid his back on the bed, he had fully recovered. He didn't feel any pain anywhere, his body even felt stronger. It was then Alex noticed his senses had sharpened to a whole new level. His eyesight, his hearing, and his sense of smell had all improved. 'Is this the work of the system? How is this even possible?' Alex pondered. He brought the system menu back up, this time it was a lot easier to navigate through its panels. He cho
Tom knew what a storage ring was but this was his first time seeing and touching one. He knew how valuable they were and he couldn't help but ponder about how Alex got his hands on one, they were from the same poor town. He doubted that the town head would even have a storage ring. He decided not to ask. He hadn't known Alex for long and even doubted that the other saw him as a friend. Alex on the other hand didn't complete checking the system due to Tom's interference. He suddenly remembered something and asked Tom. "Where did you spend the night?" It was a weird question but Alex had remembered that Tang knew their room in the dormitory. If they were searching for him, surely he would have informed Big Dave and they would have gone there and waited for Tom to return, and due to the light-out rule, Tom would surely return if not, he would be tracked down by the school authorities through the bracelet. Unless...
