VMMM….VMMM….VMMM
A pulse echoed through the waterfall’s inner cave.
Jacender's body was laid out on the floor; his head bleeding profusely.
VMMM….VMMM!!!!
It echoed again.
Jace’s eyes opened slowly.
“A..lex…i…mus…”“I’ve…gotta…g-get up…Kheah!!” he groaned, lifting up his head.
He looked down at the rest of his body.
“D-Damn…isn’t this the worst…luck…” His head throbbed.
In his midsection a long sharp rock stuck out.
If he moved, he would bleed out and die.
“Th-there’s gotta be…something…anything…” he started to look around. His senses were becoming duller.
VRMMM….VRMMM!!!!!!!
“What…is that…sound…?”
It’s not around me, and the vibrations aren't coming from the below… he concluded.
So…it must be coming….FROM ABOVE!!
He jerked his head up and he finally saw it.
Floating no more than 2-3 inches above his head. Jace didn’t know what it was. For in that moment all that crossed his mind was instinct.
What looked like a book evoked strong memories within his blood that he had no recollection of.He stretched out his hand and grabbed it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Well! Ain’t this my lucky day?! 3 brats all the way out here in the boonies, without an expert to protect them!! One of them even seems to have healing powers!! She must be the only one of you all to have opened her Sanctum! Impossible–NO! WONDERFUL!! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!” The man rocked his head back and howled with laughter.
He was skinny and had on a ripped green cloak and his hair was messily slicked back.
It was purple with blue streaks.
His pants were dark green, ripped and stripped with red.
The scabbard on his waist held a large dagger. On his cloak’s chest area was a symbol.
A ram with 2 crossing axes.
“Not only that…but they’ve also led me to a place filled with ridiculous Reiki!!! I mean– this place must be a dream come true!!! Maybe god is rewarding me for being such a great person?!? HMMMM?! Whattya think, kid?!” his crooked smile stretched to both ears, revealing rotten teeth and cracked lips.
"Oi oi oi oi!!! And what exactly do you mean by you're lucky day'? Eh, Hatagi?! It was my illusion magic that got them out here!" the other man argued.
He was fatter, wearing the same outfit, but he was neater. It seemed…newer.
"Huuuuuuhhhh???!" Hatagi turned to look at him.
"What the hell are ya whining about Dopi? I agreed to let you come with me, didn't I?! Be grateful you fat bastard! Look at her! Her arm is bleeding. She obviously tried to resist!!" He insulted him.
Dopi, the fat one, seemed to flinch at the remark.
"D-Don't talk to me like that! My uncle will-"
Hatagi narrowed his eyes.
Dopi flinched again.
"Besides!! It ain't like your illusions are amazing or anything. You're only on the 2nd level of Sanctum power. You ain't shit!!" He added.
"You left evidence!! Look at her! Her arm's bleeding like hell! She obviously tried to resist it! Meaning your skills are shit, too!!!" He added.
Hatagi seemed like – no he was, an arrogant person. He himself was just on the 3rd level of his Sanctum chamber. He wasn't all that compared to the uppers, but he enjoyed bullying the weak. It made him feel important. And with what he just scored, he felt like the man. The boss just might give him an upgrade in the guild rankings.
Dopi's face got red.
"But–"
"–Now hold the kid…we don't want the boss and the uppers coming here and taking the loot for themselves." He pointed at Anna.
"Besides. The other one is probably already dead in that waterfall over there. Che! Whatever. We can try haggling the price for his body with the church later!" he said, licking his lips as he removed his dagger from its sheath.
"She, however, will fetch a pretty penny. Shame really, hehe. A talent like that… opening a Sanctum chamber even though she ain't even 11." He inched closer to her, brandishing the knife menacingly.
His eyes narrowed and his smile became more sinister.
Aleximus gasped, mustering up the strength to move his body and leapt towards Hatagi in an attempt to block him.
“Y-you…stay away from my sister!!!!” he yelled weakly.
Hatagi was shocked. He didn't expect Aleximus to be able to move.
It was that small moment of disbelief that distracted him from an overhead explosion. One he might have otherwise been able to dodge.
BOOM!!!
The waterfall behind the men exploded.
A wave crashed on top of Dopi, who instinctively threw Anna away from him in an effort to raise his arms and block the wave.
Some of it hit Hatagi's cloak and it started to melt. The water was like acid.
"TSK!!"
He acted swiftly and threw it off.
Hatagi's arm was already affected though and was in immense pain from the water. It had almost burned completely through in an instant, but thanks to his quick action it was intact enough to be healed later.
Dopi, however, was doomed. His body melted, amounting to a no more than sloppy goo.
Skin separated from his bones, his organs were emptied out on the floor, he couldn't even be distinguished anymore. All his blood was evaporating at a rapid pace.
"...!! What…is this…?!?!" Hatagi shook, trembling in fright.
SWOOM!! SWISSSSHHH!!!
Almost as if the water had a life of its own, the waterfall opened, creating a hole large enough for Jacender's body to float out of.
"What the–!!!" Aleximus shivered.
Floating with him was the book. Jacender now emitted a pulse similar to it when it had been in the waterfall.
Droplets of water rained down.
"Mpmh!!" Aleximus exclaimed as a droplet of water fell on him. He held up his arm and braced for the pain. But none came.
It doesn’t hurt…? He winced, surprised.
Wait…ANNA!! He suddenly remembered.
"WHERE ARE YOU?!" he screamed for her
"KOFF! KOFF!!"
"ANNA!!" He gave a sigh of relief, seeing her.
Aleximus turned back around towards the waterfall.
The statue's fireball disappeared and all the water was gone.
Squinting at Jace, Aleximus noticed that his hair changed from black to white.
What is that…?! He thought, after seeing a closed floating book at Jace’s side.
The steam from the evaporated water started to clear up.
“C-Crap!!” Aleximus ran forward reaching out for Anna.
He remembered Hatagi was still there and wanted to get his sister to safety before Hatagi could notice.
CRACK
Aleximus suddenly stopped, and nearly fell over…
“E..Eh–” Was all he could muster as he peered down at his arm…
“A- AAHHHH!!” He screamed out violently in pain as he saw his arm completely bent backwards. He was about to fall to the ground… but then Hatagi grabbed him by his now broken arm and held him up. As well as covering his mouth.
“Quiet. And look up there. That right there… is an object of legend, and I’ve got to have it…”
That… Codex.”
<Chapter 3: The Codex part 2> FIN
It feels so warm…Jace thought, floating in the deep darkness. What… was I doing again? Oh yeah…----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I’ve got to get away from this man, and get Anna and Jace out of here at any cost… Aleximus thought, frightened and still in immense pain from his broken arm.And what was that he said…?“Codex”? Is it what caused that explosion and made Jace's hair white?Whatever it is, right now I just need to find a way for us to get out of thisAs Aleximus finished his thought, Hatagi pushed him to the ground and ran to Anna. Picking her up to use as a hostage.“Hey, you bastard!! Don’t you dare touch my sister!! or I’ll make you regret it!!!” he yelled.Hatagi looked over at him, slightly annoyed.“Ki
“Nghhuhhhhgg…” Hatagi groaned, holding his arm as tightly as possible to stop the bleeding. He looked wary, carefully sizing up the man.I didn't sense him……His energy… it’s higher than mine… Is he a 4th- No maybe even a 5th sanctum level expert?! Hatagi’s mind raced as he took several steps back."I've got to get out of here and alert the guild!!" He muttered to himself, and began running backwards. “Off so early, my friend? I still haven’t given you the proper hospitality for how you treated my nephews and niece here.” Uncle Matsuda’s eyes narrowed, appearing behind Hitagi with lightning-like speed. “What the…–” Hatagi exclaimed, surprised.POPPP!!!!!!Hatagi let out a scream of pure agony as Matsuda took the opportunity to lock Hatagi’s arms behind his back and shoved his foot into his ankle as far as it could go, popping it out of its socket and disabling him from running. Hatagi yelled, swinging another leg around in an attempt to get him off. Matsuda countered, grabbing it
Matsuda walked over to Anna, picked her up and directed the boys towards him. "Come."…After a few moments, they made it out of the ash tree passage and in front of them stood a giant ash tree almost 400 feet tall. It was their treehouse home. …"Grab only your clothes and shove them into these bags!! We don’t have time to worry about anything else.", he told them, throwing 2 backpacks at the boys. He placed Anna down on a bed. "Hurry!!!"–Matsuda quickly started to rummage through a chest of items in a corner. “Where is it? Where is it?!” his hands shook, throwing out clothes to get to the bottom. “Ah!” he clapped, finding a few papers and folding them. He put them into a pouch and grabbed jackets for the boys. “Put them on. Quickly!” he told them.BOOM!!A loud blast erupted in the distance. "Damn it!! They're already here!!" “W-Who?” Jace asked.“Eclipse.”------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[7 Months later]In their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th months, the boys had a hard time. With such little food, the cold would chill them to the bone. It never seemed to affect Aleximus though. He would just say that he was used to the cold. But they persevered and managed to make it through. The boys were tougher than they knew, so in their 5th and 6th month they hunted wild animals, created a decent shelter with the ash tree wood, and trained. Training every day was the only thing that helped keep their minds off of what happened. Besides, uncle Matsuda told Jacender to keep getting stronger or else the Codex would eat away at him. However, Jacender still couldn't open the book. Its cover wouldn't budge. No matter what item he used, or how hard he tried to force it, it just wouldn't open. So, he continued training harder and harder in hopes it eventually would.Aleximus still wouldn't talk about Anna. Though he definitely still missed her, he remained too scarred to speak about it. He instea
A woman was laid out on the floor of a small room. The room was dark, with the only light emanating from dim flames of a few wax candles. By her side sat a short, middle aged man. He wore Dwarven royal attire; a sleeveless brown frock coat with silver outlines. He held her hand gently, and yet his face was as serious as could be. This woman was Gwentyn Gallopas, and she was pregnant with the baby of a dwarf… his baby.SLAM!!A short woman in a brown and silver midwife robe busted in. In one hand was a cup of steaming water and in the other, a wet rag and what seemed to be leaves. "Dorthy! You're here! Thank Arsaes!!" The man cheered, taking the water and leaves from her. He clenched his fist, staring at the meager supplies."Is this all you could get? Is this really all that my own brothers could offer me in helping deliver my child?!" Dorthy rubbed her neck, offering her apologies to the man. "I'm sorry Ivan. But this was the best I could do… I will be considered a traitor if
Jace and Hidemi sat in silence. On the floor were words that Hidemi wrote out. He had been telling Jace his story in writing. "... What happened next?" Jace asked hesitantly.A flash of memories hit Hidemi's mind. ▪︎Finding his father get hauled off by the guards to be arrested▪︎▪︎Seeing the figure of a man at the window of his home smiling▪︎▪︎Getting beaten and thrown out of the city by guards▪︎He shook his head "no" signaling that he didn't want to talk about it."I understand…" Jace said. He too knew what it was like to experience a devastating loss. The likes of which would shake you to the core. He sat next to Hidemi as the two stared into the fire together as they listened to its crackle and the only other sounds around them— the animals.Ughh. I made it too weird now! I can't talk to him anymore. Jace heaved, slapping his head with the palm of his hand. "Oi!" A voice came from behind them. Hidemi and Jace turned around in time to see Aleximus kick Hidemi fast into th
“They’ve gotta be around here somewhere!” Upo shouted. “Stop lazing around, ya layabouts!!” His 2 men ran around in a hurry, frantically dashing through the forest in fear.“I get the captain wants to get back at those little kids but isn’t this taking it too far?” one of the guards murmured. “What do you mean?”The guard stopped and put his back against a tree. “Stupid. Did you forget that we aren’t supposed to be leaving the city?! I know you’re new here but come on! Have some common sense!” The other guard scratched his head, apologizing. “Besides… out of all the places we’re not supposed to go, this is the most dangerous. Haven’t you heard the story of the missing dwarves who used to be sent here and banished?” “B-But I thought it was all just a children’s story!” the other guard exclaimed, looking around to his sides worried.“Of course not! They say a dark presence lives here in the Weeping Forest. Any trespassing would disappear without a trace. But Captain Upo… Argh, he’s
A week had passed since the boys had first begun their training with the entity. They hadn’t made much progress since. The concept of Sanctum Pressure and the Chamber system was still a mystery to them. – "AHHGGHHH?!?!?!?!" Jace screamed in frustration, furiously scratching his head. "Why can't I get it right?!?!?!?" Aleximus ignored him, staring at his palm with intense focus. That feeling… He recalled, thinking back to when he had forced the rocks to fall on Hatagi after their momentary suspension in the air. If I could just access that feeling again… He sighed quietly and stood. "Come on dummy." He beckoned Jace over as he stood making his way into the forest. Jace raised his brow in surprise. "You wanna go again? Aren't you pushing yourself too hard?" He walked on. "You idiot. It's precisely why I'm going back. We only have a few more weeks until the Dwanivit competition. We still don't know what Hidemi's training entails and worse, we can't grasp Sanctum energy
