Chapter 109
I expected a violent reaction from my best friend, but apart from the spark of surprise in his eyes, he just nodded with resignation and said, "I'm happy for you." His reaction was enough for me to realize that something had changed in him and I wondered what could have happened to bring about such a change. "Why are you here, Ben?" So many questions were whirling in my mind regarding his return to The Shade and I had no idea where to begin. "How could you have possibly known how to get here? Ben, please…you can't give away the location of The Shade to the hunters…" "I really just wanted to see you, Sofia, find out if you're alright, if he's treating you the way you deserve to be treated." The longing that I saw in his eyes as he stared at me made my heart ache on his behalf. "I missed you so much." No matter how much I tried to harden my heart against him, to try and figure out why he was at The Shade out of instinct to protect the man I loved, Ben still mattered too much to me,

Chapter 111
"Sofia…" the voice said—small and frail, "you're back." I turned around and saw a little girl standing a few feet away from me. Her green eyes and knotted red hair eerily reminded me of myself. "Hello," I greeted her. "What are you doing here?" She walked toward the light and I gasped when I realized that she was me. "I'm scared," she told me. "Why?" I asked. "Why are you scared?" Her lips began to quiver and her hand moved toward her neck before letting her fingers fiddle with a pendant hanging under a golden chain around her neck. I walked closer to this smaller version of myself, wondering what was bothering her. "You don't have to be scared…" I told her. She shook her head. "No. I should be afraid. Very afraid." She let go of the pendant and I realized that it was mine—the diamond one that Derek had given me for my birthday. "Who gave you that necklace?" I asked her. "It's mine." She pouted. "Yes, but who gave it to you?" "It doesn't matter now." Tears began streaming d

Chapter 112
I glared at him in response. He rolled his eyes. "You're at The Oasis. If you don't know what that is, it's the home of the Maslens. We're in the middle of the desert now, Sofia." The Maslens… Tears began to brim my eyes. The thought was horrifying. "What have I done to you?" He smirked. "Well, the question I think should be what do I want to do with you, but I'll spare you those details? Sadly, as much as I wanted to have my way with you, I had to bring you to Borys Maslen unscathed. He wanted you to remain a virgin until the night of your wedding to him. Now, for you final question, I'm about to take you to your betrothed, Sofia." I was finding it hard to take in the information that I'd just been given. My mind was whirling. "Why would you do this?" was all I could manage to ask. "You ruined my life, Sofia. I'm about to ruin yours." He lunged forward, pushing me down on the bed, and letting his weight fall on top of me. He then whispered right into my ear, "Make no mistake abo

Chapter 113
She shook her head. "I'm not sure. Lucas says that we're in Egypt, a place called The Oasis."I drew a breath. The Oasis was the stuff of legends. It'd been one of the hunters' main quests to find it, because it was rumored to be the Maslen coven's hideout. I wondered then why on earth Gregor and Claudia would bring us to the Maslens. That's when what Sofia had said fully registered in my mind. That would mean they'd been working with Lucas all along, and Lucas had been working with the Maslens? "Why would they bring us here?" I asked Sofia. "The Novaks and the Maslens are known enemies…" "I don't know why Lucas would work with the Maslens after what Borys did to his sister, but he's a twisted, sick man… so I can't pretend to try and understand the way his mind works." I studied Sofia and noticed the blood stains on her dress. Panic gripped me. "What did they do to you? Sofia…" "It was Borys Maslen. He clawed through my thighs. He has this notion that I'm meant to be his, that I'm

Chapter 114
She swallowed hard as she nodded her head toward me in response. She didn't seem comfortable with the message she was about to give me. "I have a message for Derek Novak from Borys Maslen and Sofia Claremont." Murmurs were exchanged throughout the dome. I gulped as Natalie left the stand and climbed up toward the balcony in order to hand me the letter. "I'm sorry," she said quietly before turning and once again taking her place at the stand. I stared at the envelope, dreading what it could possibly contain. I swallowed hard as I opened it. No words could explain what I felt upon seeing the wedding invitation. I let out a deep growl. "Derek…" Natalie knew me well enough to know when something was tearing me apart. We'd had our fair share of memories together. She heaved a deep sigh. "I was told to let you know that you are to go alone. Any vampire from this coven seen stepping anywhere near the desert will be shot down. Only you are to go there if you want to see her." "What is it

Chapter 115
My stomach turned when I realized that he was wearing nothing but a loincloth to cover his bulking frame. His gaze quickly went from my face to my body. I wasn't even sure if he heard Ingrid's explanation that I was just nervous to be presented to my bridegroom. "Leave us," he ordered, his eyes traveling the length of my body. Ingrid gave him a nod. I grabbed her hand before she could move. "Please…don't leave me…" "You'll be fine, my love. He won't take you to his bed until after the wedding. He's a gentleman that way." A gentleman. I almost laughed at the thought. How could she call him that after what she had witnessed him do to me? Ingrid shook my hand away and quickly strode out of the room. "Enjoy getting to know each other, children!" she chirped before closing the door behind her. Standing in the middle of the room, I couldn't control the way my body quivered as Borys slowly approached. He began circling me like a vulture, his eyes taking in my form, violating me with mer

Chapter 116
I sat up on the bed and backed away from her. She reached out for me and I flinched when her fingers brushed over my shoulder. I glared at her, expecting to see the same glint of manic glee in her eyes—the same look she always gave me when she held me captive at The Shade. Instead, the look on her eyes was soft and pensive—practically moist with tears. "Do you love her, Ben?" "Love who?" I practically spat the words out. I was sickened by the way she was acting. I felt as if someone like her had no business talking about love. "Sofia…" I stared at her incredulously. She didn't have the right to talk about Sofia and I had every right not to give her a response. "And if I do?" I managed to say. She shrugged one shoulder. Her head bowed slightly, a mass of curls falling over her shoulders. "I love someone too. I didn't realize how much until I got here. I never should've left The Shade. I need him." I practically gawked at her. I had no idea who I was facing at that moment. Gone wa

Chapter 117
Borys let go of her and the moment he did, she ran into my arms, tears streaming down her face. I held her tight, unwilling to let go, sickened by the thought of what she'd been through since she arrived at The Oasis. I didn't need to ask if she was alright or if they hurt her. It was clear to see that she wasn't. It was obvious that they had. "Get me out of here, Derek," she sobbed against my chest. "He's going to destroy me. Everyone here is insane. Especially my mother…" She knows. I shut my eyes, trying to find words to soothe her, wondering how on earth I was going to get her out of there. I could smell the blood on her neck. My mouth watered at the scent, but I was too mortified by the idea that Borys had already tasted her blood to even start craving her. "Sofia, I'm so sorry," was all I could think of to say. She shook her head. "You didn't do this." "I've failed to protect you so many times…" "Don't do this, Derek. Just don't. We have to get out of here—you, me and Ben

Chapter 118
Despite my tears, I laughed wryly. "It's you who's been brainwashed, Ingrid…or maybe I ought to call you Camilla…is there still any part of her left in you? Dad was right about you. You are insane. You left your own family to blindly serve this villain of a king." "You have no idea what you're talking about. You don't know what my life was like. I loved Aiden. He was everything to me, and then you came along. I never wanted you, but I gave in to his requests for a child, because I loved him. You stole him from me." She was saying the words calmly, her eyes set on the bite marks on my neck as she proceeded to tend to the wound. The spite every word contained mixed with the calmness and affection by which she expressed them made her one of the scariest people I'd ever met. I couldn't begin to fathom how broken a creature my own mother was. I was certain, however, that even though I had been born of her womb, she was now a complete stranger. No more words were exchanged until she was

Chapter 119
I stepped away when Borys began to run his hand down my shoulder. Borys responded by using one strong arm to grab my waist and pull my back against him, holding me in position so that he could touch me any way he pleased right in front of Derek. I kept my eyes on Derek's, wondering if things would really end this way. I was grasping for any thread of hope. I wanted to be strong for Derek, but I had no idea how to do it. We were both too weak, too broken. When a soft knock interrupted Borys' shameless display, I could hear Derek sigh with relief. "What?!" Borys screamed. A guard entered. He looked terrified. "Your highness…" His voice trembled. "The boy…Ben…he escaped with the blonde vampire. They both left The Oasis…they haven't yet returned." I could feel Borys' breathing suddenly get heavy. His arms clamped around me so tightly, I thought he wanted to snap me in two. Instead, he pushed me to the ground and marched toward the guard. He grabbed the guard's neck. "How long have th
