In system novels, the protagonist usually starts by falling into a dire crisis or developing an urgent desire, at which point the system appears.

The system can fulfill the protagonist's needs, such as: life, wealth, power, skills, and so on.

In short, the system provides whatever the protagonist
urgently needs at that moment.

In this part you need to clarify:

What crisis is the protagonist currently facing?

What is his current situation?

What’s his desire? In other words, what does the protagonist lack the most?

The system is derived from games and naturally carries various game attributes, such as: issuing tasks, level experience, equipment, skill points, rewards, system shop, etc.

A well-defined system setting is key to making a system novel engaging.

When setting up the system, it is mainly divided into four steps:

1. Setting Attributes for the System
The system exists as the protagonist's "golden finger," and its attributes should be closely integrated with the plot.

Common systems include: wealth system, apocalypse survival system, detective system, archaeology system, treasure appraisal system, harem system, etc.
2. Establishing a Set of Rules for the System
System rules mainly fall into two categories:

· Positive Feedback Rules: Completing tasks successfully results in rewards.

· Counterintuitive Rules: Failing tasks can lead to rewards.

Note: It's essential that the task rewards are highly enticing for the protagonist to motivate him to take action.
3. Setting Clear Reward and Punishment Mechanisms
The system includes both reward and punishment mechanisms—rewards for successful tasks and penalties for failures.

Punishment mechanisms can be categorized into three types:

· Punishment for Task Failure: If the protagonist acts against the system's rules, a penalty is applied.

· Punishment for Disobeying Rules: If the protagonist acts against the system's rules, a penalty is applied.

· Invisible Punishment: The completion rate of tasks is tied to the protagonist's life points; failing a task results in a decrease in life points.

Reward mechanisms can include:

· Task Rewards: Completing tasks yields rewards from the system.

· Unexpected Rewards: Unlocking hidden tasks unexpectedly grants rewards.

· The benefits provided by the system should align with the main storyline, ideally addressing the existing or impending challenges.

Reward Exchange Mechanisms can be:

· Points Mall: Fixed rewards, often featuring rare rewards in the mall to stimulate the protagonist's task motivation and heighten readers’ anticipation.

· Points Lottery: Random rewards, which can easily increase drama.

· Skill Points: High flexibility, used to enhance skills like life points, physical ability, luck, etc.

As the protagonist's skills improve, the system should also be capable of upgrading. System upgrades can unlock more functions and task rewards or possess higher intelligence.

This setup can extend the main storyline while preventing readers from losing interest in the story.

The protagonist should have an independent career line outside of the tasks provided by the system, and these career lines should be the main content of the book. The tasks from the system should primarily serve to promote or hinder the completion of these career lines.

The main content of the story should not revolve around completing various tasks given by the system, as this would make the protagonist feel manipulated rather than pursuing their own goals through their own will, which readers may find frustrating.
The rewards given by the system should not be excessively powerful all at once; moderation is essential in reward design. Ideally, the protagonist should not solely rely on the system to solve problems but should face both the obstacles of system task rewards and their own efforts. However, in a system novel, the system's task rewards should play a significant role in helping the protagonist solve problems, while the protagonist's efforts can be portrayed as much less than others due to their reliance on the system.
Avoid writing panels in system novels. While panels are common in Japanese light novels or anime, they should generally not appear in web novels, as readers often lack the patience to read through what is written on a panel. A panel refers to something similar to a numerical display in games, for example:

"Name: XXX
Strength:
Speed:
Agility:
Magic Power:

If a panel must be included, there are two requirements:

(1) The data should not be presented all at once but should be revealed gradually through a series of events, allowing readers to gain a clear impression of each aspect before gradually accumulating a skill list, attributes, etc.

(2) Ensure that every item listed has narrative significance and is related to subsequent plot developments; avoid writing irrelevant information.
Be cautious when writing a personified system. Some authors give their systems distinct personalities, allowing them to banter with the protagonist. Some may find it entertaining, while others may dislike it, perceiving the system as overly chatty.

If you choose to write a personified system, pay attention to the dialogue between the protagonist and the system. Avoid unproductive conversations; focus instead on informative exchanges that shape the system's character (as a functional supporting character) rather than redundant or meaningless chatter.
Do not explain what the system is or where it comes from at the beginning. Readers do not care about this; they only care about what the system can provide for the protagonist. If you must explain this, it should be addressed later in the story, not in the early chapters.

The male lead can be cheated by his girlfriend because he is poor and useless in her eyes. Being humiliated and almost beaten to death by her new rich boyfriend, he obtained a wealth system. The rewards from the system are substantial, but he cannot access them all directly. The system stipulates that he must spend money on women to earn rewards. He can see the women's affection levels towards him, and he can only receive a tenfold rebate of the money spent on a woman when she falls in love with him.
The country the male lead lives in is under invasion by the demon tribe, putting humanity in grave danger. Only powerful warriors can take on the responsibility of protecting their families, which is why martial artists are highly respected among the human race. The protagonist possesses an extraordinary and rare talent, making him a remarkable genius who carries the hopes of the entire nation.

However, during an accident, he is severely injured while trying to protect his younger brother, causing him to lose his talent and become an ordinary person, facing disdain from everyone. Meanwhile, his brother gains more attention from the family and gradually replaces the protagonist's position. The entire family believes the protagonist has brought shame to the family, and even his fiancée abandons him.

Just as he faces humiliation from his entire clan and is forced to leave, the protagonist awakens a cultivation system. By completing system tasks, he can gain endless resources for cultivation and even restore his lost talent.
