Chapter 11: It’s been four years?
Victor stood frozen to the spot like he had been struck by lightning, his brain working overtime. Hundreds of questions popped up in his mind. ‘How long has he known? How did he find out? Is he trying to test me? Is he going to kill me? Is this where I die?’ The more he thought of it, the more irrational his thoughts became. Seeing Victor’s silence and his gobsmacked look, Paul continued, “Don’t bother trying to deny it. When a person becomes infected, their bio-energy field carries a bit of their killing intent and bloodlust, the will to end their victims. While some infected have learnt how to hide their own intent, yours make you look like a glow stick to the trained eye. I could see it clearly in the cafeteria when James and his goons came to find trouble, and I could see it when you first approached our convoy.”

Chapter 12: The lesser of two evils
Paul stared at Victor in confusion, “What do you mean?”“I killed it. I didn’t run into your convoy Paul, I saw you guys attacked by the horde of zombies, so I challenged the Alpha Zombie to a fight and I won. Then I took a detour around to get ahead of your convoy and wait.”Paul stared at him with disbelief for a few moments before bursting out in laughter. Victor couldn’t understand why he would suddenly start laughing.Paul clapped and laughed more, “Good, just fantastic. You do have potential. I have been wondering why the zombies suddenly slowed down, long enough for us to escape.”“You’re not mad that I planned our meeting.”“Why should I be? You woke up to a brand new world, you probably went unconscious before the world went to shit, rejoining society would have been your only goal.”Victor became visibly relieved, it would be disappointing if Paul regarded his actions as untruthworthy. “How did you kill the zombie?”“I drove an iron rod through its skull, I still don’t know

Chapter 13: A New Job
Cars stopped outside the gate of King Moon Base, after identification they were allowed to enter. Each vehicle was filled with people, some of them were injured, others were shaking from the cold due to their tattered clothing. They all looked curiously at the new environment they had entered. Victor was walking towards the kitchen area when the vehicles passed by him, he spotted a familiar face of someone sitting by the window, unlike the others, this man was much dirtier and it was easy to see the exhaustion on his face. He simply leaned against the window with lethargy. The man looked like a beggar, which made it difficult to immediately recognize him, the bus sped past before Victor could get a better look. He didn't think he could possibly know someone in these parts, perhaps it was just a mistake. The buses kicked up a cloud of dust as they passed.

Chapter 14: Why not beat them up?
Twenty minutes later,Paul found him sitting on the top floor of an uncompleted highrise building within the base. He was staring at the wildlands beyond the vehicle walls.“I’m sorry for putting you in that situation, it was too brazen of me”“I could have killed him, I’m not like you Paul, I have no control”“Nonsense…”, Paul walked up to him, “I have not seen anyone show the kind of restraint that you have. It is so easy for you to control the urge.”“How many Revenants have you met?”“Not many”“That’s not very reassuring”

Chapter 15: Massacre at Night
The words struck a chord with him. As he calmed down to think, the sound of quickened heartbeats, and light thuds came to him. He traced the source of the sound to a shade behind a tree. With his night vision, he could see two legs peeking from behind the tree, someone was lying down there. Another set of legs were in between the first set of legs. Blood rushed to his face as he realized what was going on. Of the two heartbeats he originally heard, one was faint, while the other was vigorous. A man groaned from behind the tree. Moments later, a man emerged from the shade, zipping up his trousers. He was bare chested, with his shirt hanging on his shoulder. One of the brigands noticed,  “Oi Kunle, are you done now?” Kunle fanned himself

Chapter 16: People are the true monsters
In a corner of the camp, the young lady was crouched, shivering and sobbing uncontrollably.Paul walked to her, when she saw him come to her, she tried to scramble away, but her fear made it difficult to stand and run away.Paul knelt down on one knee and passed a handkerchief to her.She hesitated.“Don't worry, I won't hurt you. Take it.”She stretched her hand, and after hesitating for a moment, she finally collected it. Cleaning the tears that had wet her face.“What's your name?”“Helen” “Miss Helen, I am sorry for your loss. Are you okay?”She nodded, sniffling.“Good. Stay here, I'll be right back.”He stood and returned to Victor.“You just saved her from experiencing the same fate as the others.”Victor sniffled and cleaned his face with his sleeve. “That doesn't make this right”“It never is. The day you become okay with taking a human life, that is the day you stop being one at heart. If you feel adverse to killing, then do so only out of necessity.”“What if I don't want

Chapter 17: This f*cked up world
A week passed swiftly, Victor spent most of it in thought. Apart from performing his quota in the kitchen and abattoir, he had no other job to do. He spent his free time hanging out with Lewa and learning more about the base. She seemed to know quite a lot about the base, almost as if she had memorized everything. The two of them had become almost inseparable due to this, she was drawn into his thought process and his life prior to the apocalypse, after all he was a foreigner from a different continent even if his parents originally came from this other continent. At some point, Mrs. Titi wondered if she should separate them so they could get more job done, but after watching them for a few days and seeing how well the duo worked together, with Lewa in the lead and Victor following and coordinating with her almost flawlessly in the kitchen, the Lead Chef was forced to keep them together for an increa

Chapter 18: A Night to Remember
“It must have been hard…killing people who were once friends. I remember that the bunk I have been sleeping in belonged to one of your team members.”Deji sighed, “I only wish we could find a cure, Dr. Martin believes studying the blessed is the key to finding a cure so he has been engrossed in it so much that he doesn’t even leave his building if it isn’t something important.” Victor knew Deji was one of the students of Dr. Martin, according to the rule set by the Base’s management to ensure the continual survival of the base, every specialist in the base had to take in students. Mechanics, Doctors, Farmers, even Chefs.According to what he learnt from the kitchen gossip, the base’s only doctor was Dr. Martin, a recluse professor, highly skilled in different medical fields, and the sub-dean of the Life Sciences faculty in the city's University prior to the apocalypse. After he joined the base, he took in only three students and those students were tasked to train the apprentices tha

Chapter 19: Raid Summons
Victor blinked his eyes open, the sterile white ceiling swimming into view. He shifted slightly, his senses slowly returning. To his left, Lewa sat quietly, her eyes scanning his face as if searching for signs of life. At the foot of his bed stood Deji, clipboard in hand, dressed in a white coat. A thin IV tube snaked from Victor’s arm to a stand beside his bed.“He’s awake,” Lewa’s voice broke the stillness, and Victor could feel the tension in her body easing. As he tried to sit up, she quickly moved to support him, helping him lean back against the headboard. Her touch was gentle, but her gaze was filled with concern.“How do you feel?” she asked softly, her voice barely masking the worry beneath her calm exterior. Before Victor could respond, Deji cut in. “He’s fine, Lewa. I’ve already checked him over. You shou

Chapter 20: A New Threat
Knock, knock.  A muffled voice came from behind the door, “It’s open.”  Solomon stepped into the lab, holding a file tightly in his hand. "Dr. Martin, I appreciate you taking the time to meet with me."  Dr. Martin lifted his gaze from a microscope, where he’d been hunched over, fully engrossed in his work. His graying sideburns and streaks of silver hair gave him an air of both exhaustion and authority. The apocalypse had consumed his life, the endless quest to understand the Revenant Virus tired him out, making him look older than he was. With resources scarce, Martin now focused his days on ensuring as many lives were saved as possible, which often meant spending countless hours on research and experiments. His neatly pressed white coat and glasses hinted at the professional he onc
