Chapter Thirty-One
System Activated: Divine Talent Granted /Yeshua Yin
Last bell and last run ended. His classmates hurried from the classroom, creaking chairs, and rustling books filled the air. Oliver was feeling that his heart would burst out from there. But Oliver couldn't care a bit about that. His head was still reeling from hearing that voice in his mind just moments ago. The notification, he was told, was an echo that didn't want to leave him at peace. He hasn't ever understood that it meant, but as all else has the feeling something very bad was about to happen this time. Very bad. His fingers trembled as he crammed his notebook into the backpack, trying to ignore that gnawing feeling under his skin."Hey, Oliver! Everything all right, man?" This was Billy Williams from his math class. The voice sounded casual, but the eyes dripped concern."Yeah. Just tired," Oliver lied, putting on a pathetic smile. There was no way he could tell Billy that he had just received a creepy message from the System. No one would believe it.Billy shrugged and grinn

Oliver felt only fear the moment he pressed his back against the door. His heart raced; a million thoughts surged through his mind. And for a brief second, all he could see was the darkness. Somehow wide awake, his mind was desperate to catch a glimpse of anything in that blackness. The air was thick with dust, tangy and ancient, filling his inflamed nostrils, forcing him to cough. Gradually images took shape in his mind. He had stumbled into some janitor's closet, small, stuffy, and messy with mops standing against walls and bottles of cleaning chemicals piled on rusty shelves. Torn rags festered across the floor like a fallen tissue. In here though, he was safe-for now.Heavy footsteps echoed from the far end of the hallway, the regular clang of boots against the unforgiving floor sending chills up his spine. They sound slow but deliberate. These footsteps have all the time in the world as if they're sure he'll be found."Sector B, corridor clear. Proceeding to next area."The voic

Oliver did not take a reminder. As soon as the announcement went through the intercom, he clenched Rachel's hand. Without wasting another moment, they charged out of the cafeteria like two huge animals running in a forest, their footsteps crashing through the cracked and dirty tiles, racing in a furious rush.Oliver's lungs burned and gasped for air still laden with irritating fumes. It constricted his breath and ached his chest, but fear was the victor. He was about to collapse, with legs he could hardly believe were still working; what kept him going now was terror. "Where are we going?" Rachel's voice trembles in broken intervals between gasps of breath. Her eyes were wide and wild, flicking about as if she were expecting something wretched to spring from its hiding place onto them."Anywhere but here. We have to get away from here. We have to get out," Oliver grunted. The roughness of his voice had all the qualities of having shouted, but he ignored the corresponding agony in his

Oliver felt his heart galloping in his chest like a blacksmith's hammer, his very ribs aching with each possible thud. His body was still trembling before he could catch a breath with his lungs burning from the intake of cold air. The shed was murky and smelled of rust and rotten wood. His throat felt raw from his attempt at swallowing; blood could even be tasted on his tongue. He slumped against the rough wooden wall, hand pressed to splintered plywood on the way to balancing himself. His other hand gripped an old iron tube that he had jammed across the door handles as a makeshift barricade. It wasn't much-barely strong enough to hold against a real force-but it was the only thing standing between them and whatever was hunting them.Rachel sat opposite the wall, back against it. Breathing had become shallow and painful, her head bent low. The dark hair hung down the forehead drenched in sweat. The trembling hands had looked like his. All this made her tiny and fragile like an old lad

Oliver’s whole body felt like it was on fire. His skin tingled, the heat from the spell still buzzing through him like tiny needles. He didn’t know how he did it—how he made that fire appear. It just happened, like something deep inside him woke up. But there was no time to think about that now.The monster was still moving. The huge metal creature staggered, its shiny metal plates bent and blackened where the fireball had hit it. Its face was made of dark, smooth glass, like a mirror that didn’t show anything back. It twisted toward Oliver, its emptiness somehow filled with anger. The sound of gears and pistons whirring came from its body, the noise rough and sharp, like someone dragging a blade over stone.“Rachel! Get behind me!” Oliver yelled, his voice shaking but strong. His whole body still felt hot and alive, like his veins were pumping with lightning instead of blood.Rachel scrambled to her feet, her eyes wide and filled with terror. For a second, she just stood there, froze

The monster’s chest glowed with a bright, blinding white light, growing stronger with every second. It looked like a sun trapped inside its metal body, and the light was so bright that Oliver couldn’t look away. His heart pounded loud in his ears, drowning out everything else. He was frozen, unable to move or think—just standing there, waiting for death to reach him.Suddenly, a scream cut through the air.“Oliver!” Rachel’s voice was shrill and full of terror. Her cry snapped him out of his daze, and he forced his body to move. With a burst of adrenaline, he threw himself sideways just as a beam of white-hot energy shot from the monster’s chest. It tore through the air, burning everything in its path. The ground where Oliver had just been standing was scorched black, and the shed wall behind him exploded into burning splinters and ash. The whole structure groaned, creaking like it was about to collapse.Oliver hit the ground hard, his shoulder screaming with pain. He coughed, choking

Oliver held Rachel close, his arms wrapped tightly around her trembling body. His own hands shook, not just from fear but from the strain of holding back his power. His skin was hot, like he was burning from the inside, but he forced himself to calm down. The air around them was thick and heavy with the sharp smell of burnt metal and ash. The fire he had released only moments ago had finally died down, leaving the destroyed remains of the shed around them.“Rachel... Are you okay?” Oliver’s voice was hoarse, his throat dry from the heat. He looked down at her, his eyes filled with worry. His messy hair clung to his forehead, and sweat dripped down his face. He was tired. So tired. But he had to make sure Rachel was safe.Rachel coughed weakly, her hand clutching his sleeve as if he was her only lifeline. Her face was pale, her breathing shallow. But she was alive. That was all that mattered to him right now. Her eyes flickered open, her gaze blurry and full of pain.“I-I think so...”

All of Oliver's body was screaming in pain. Every muscle burned; every breath was sharp, painful, searing through every nerve. But he could not stop. He would not stop. The towering giant in front of him left no possible hesitation, no moment of indecision. It was a monster unlike anything he had ever faced-a giant of fire and metal, its body made of grinding gears and sharp blades, constantly shifting like a living machine of destruction. The ground trembled as it stepped, and the air grew hotter with every move it made.Oliver had faced more than his fair share of enemies before, but this one was astoundingly different. It was power-how can one put it-absolute and unstoppable. The way it moved, how it adapted is not only a beast. It is far worse. A destructive force given a form. The titan raised one massive arm, the metal shifting and reforming into a heavy, thick blade. And without a second notice, it lowered."Move!" screamed his instincts to Oliver. His body obeyed before his m

Oliver's body gave out. Strange black spots crept into the edges of his sight, blurring everything before him. Every muscle in his body screamed in pain; his bones almost creaked with the great pressure above him pulling down.It was the titan's power—an invisible force as heavy as a mountain that pressed him against the ground. He could feel that force well into his bones, in the way his limbs were not moving. His arms were locked in place, and his legs were trembling from all the weight that was bearing down on them. He could barely keep his balance. If he fell now, he knew full well he would not be able to get back on his feet.Yet, Oliver refused to fall. All around him, the battlefield was a wasteland of fire and ruin. Solid ground was broken up and shattered into pieces, and fine, glowing cracks of molten rock slithered through the destruction as through fiery veins. The sky was a mass of stinking black smoke swirling and twisting overhead, blotting the sun's light while the air

Oliver was already on the move the instant the titan began to stir. Then came the deep sound and rumble of a great disturbance on the battlefield as both rushed towards each other. The titan was an absolute giant—nearly twice his height—and the twin blades were suffused with an unnatural raw energy that crackled violently in the air. In a blinding split second, they descended upon him faster than lightning, slicing the air.CLANG!Fire exploded on his arms, bright like the sun, as he rode to intercept. Sparks flew in all directions on impact—metal against fire. Shockwaves coursed through the battlefield with the violence of their deadly kiss as Oliver was hurled backward. His boots dug trenches in the cracked and charred ground, but he did not fall.As soon as he stopped sliding, he darted forward. Now in a full sprint, the titan in his sights and molten fire lining his limbs, Oliver planted a flaming fist against the titan's chest.BOOM!Out in the air ran a wave in the impact zone a
