Marked by the Alpha Review: A Story of Betrayal and Neglect

Author Introduction

Not much is disclosed about Mathieu Forest, but he's renowned for writing tasty Contemporary Romance stories such as "Room to Fall" and "The Devastating Mr. Wilder." The novel under review, "Marked by the Alpha," also showcases his skills for drafting powerful Paranormal Romance stories.

Characters

The main characters in this awe-inspiring journey are Layla Fabrini and Alpha Hector. We will place our attention almost solely on them for this review.

Layla Fabrini

Layla is the bastard daughter of the Sanguis Pack's Beta and has been, for the most part, an overlooked member of both her family and the Pack. She's forced to marry Alex Rockmountain, the man who'd end up cheating on her with none other than her half-sister Lu.

Even though she has learned to bear humiliation in silence owing to her condition, she's not willing to marry a man who clearly doesn't love her enough to control himself amidst other women, let alone her female family members. This strong-willed decision would prove exceedingly costly to her.

Alpha Hector

Alpha Hector is a very self-aware man who demands respect and loves issuing commands. Alas, this love or power and control also applies to his love life as he attempts to make Layla yield to his wishes in exchange for protection.

Nevertheless, he also shows that he deeply cares about Layla and her well-being, which is also a trait that he shares with most Alphas depicted in fiction.

Plot

Betrayal

The novel starts with Layla overhearing her stepsister inside her bedroom, speaking with a man. That man was none other than her fiancé, Alex, and they started cuddling and kissing. She walked right in and immediately called the relationship off, even though Alex wasn't willing to let her go just yet.

Layla's family wasn't pleased with her decision, and her dad temporarily sided with Alex on account of a promise that her family had made. However, when it was posited that Alex might possibly make sexual advances towards Lu, he no longer viewed Alex as a suitable mate for Layla.

Alex became enraged and promised to take revenge on Layla and her family. Meanwhile, Gaius, Layla's father, told Alex that Alpha Hector was on the way and he wouldn't appreciate all the words he had uttered thus far.

Alex then decided to reveal to the entire Sanguis Pack that Layla's wolf lacked the sense of smell, meaning that she wouldn't be capable of detecting her mate. Furthermore, he claimed he was tricked into the engagement despite her having a "defective" wolf. Next thing, all eyes were on her as she watched Alex in disbelief. Everyone in the Pack started hurling insults towards Layla's family, and her own father would soon also turn his back on her.

The Alpha's Arrival

Alpha Hector arrived from a recent battle with some rogues in time to witness the deplorable scene, but before Gaius had a chance to apologize, Hector uttered Layla's name, to her surprise. He defended her in front of all those present, including her father, who was angered by Layla's stubbornness.

Hector dismissed the entire crowd except for Layla, whom he beckoned to his office. After asking her a few questions, he placed a dagger in her hand and made her cut a wound through his wrist. He then smeared the blood that spurred forth from the injury all over her forehead. In summary, he "marked" her.

Even with her handicap, Layla did feel very attached to Hector, though he would try to put her love to the test by demanding unconditional obedience.

Hot Chapters

Chapter 5

Hector invited Layla to play the Moon Goddess at the Triumph Procession the next day, but he also summoned her to the Pack's training field. There, she'd engage in a skirmish with her former fiancé, one in which her wolf, Lea, would display some surprisingly powerful combat skills!

Chapter 6

It was the day of the Triumph Procession (which Layla would lead), and Lu offered Layla help braiding her hair, an offer the latter refused, remarking that a make-up artist would drop by later. As Layla was all dressed up, her sister appeared again and asked if she could touch her dress.

During the procession, Layla noticed her sister casting a radiant smile, which, in her view, was a sure sign that something horrible was about to happen. She suddenly began to feel an itching sensation and a rise in temperature. The agony was quickly building up to the point where she would finally collapse to the ground.

Final Thoughts

"Marked by the Alpha" is, from the onset, a very conventional Werewolf-themed novel that portrays the typical suffering Luna in her quest for her destined Alpha. But, while the premise hardly breaks new grounds in storytelling, the author largely succeeds in getting us emotionally invested in the main characters (at least for a time).

There's also the writing style, which conveys a highly personable and honest aura. Mathieu is not one to beat around the bush, and right from the start, he lays out the main plot points in a swift fashion, though probably at the expense of richer lore and world-building. That said, the narrative itself is thrilling, and readers are guaranteed to be glued to the (virtual) pages of this web novel with each passing chapter.

Follow Layla's fascinating journey from emotionally wrecked underdog to Luna in "Marked by the Alpha." We assure you won't end up feeling disappointed!
