Characters

Skylar Moon

Skylar is the novel's "damsel in distress," the "abused mate," so to speak. She's the daughter of the pack's Beta (essentially, the second in command after the Alpha), though that hasn't stopped her from getting abused by her pack's Alpha. She bore the scar of abuse from the early age of 16, making her incapable of seeing members of the opposite sex in a romantic context.

Alpha Damon Dark

True to his last name, Damon is a very chaotic Alpha who doesn't appear to place hedges on his most basic instincts. He appears at first to love and care for Skylar, but his ardent desire for a mate has him behaving in a somewhat erratic and even violent way, with dire psychological consequences ensuing for those around him.

Devon King

Devon is the son of the Blue Moon pack's Alpha and, as such, is set to be the next one after his father steps down. He'd actually be Skylar's fated mate, though she would initially hesitate to take him owing to her gloomy past. Nevertheless, he would prove to be a much more lovable character than Damon.

Plot

The plot in "The Alpha's Abused Mate" begins with a nerve-racking escape scene involving Skylar, her mom, Alpha Damon, and Mac (an old friend of the Moon family). Of course, Alpha Damon is the hunter during this whole affair, and Mac helps Skylar and her mom cross the border, out of Damon's reach.

Skylar then starts having flashbacks of some of the most violent instances of literal physical abuse she experienced at the hands of Alpha Damon. She then relates how she used to look up to him and how sweet he used to be towards her. He could never find his fated mate, so one day, he asked her if she wanted to mate with him, a proposal that would leave her dumbfounded.

She respectfully declined the offer, something that the Alpha didn't take all that well. He ultimately decided to obtain a "yes" from her the tough way. In an attempt to appease him, she would politely suggest more mature candidates that more closely match his age, but his attitude would only worsen.

Back to the present day, Skylar and her mom arrive in Blue Moon pack territory, where the former would meet future Alpha and fated mate Devon King. She doesn't feel too excited about meeting him because she doesn't have the least desire for a mate on account of her old wounds, but perhaps Devon could help with the healing.

Skylar feels her heart racing at the sight of this person who's supposed to be the Moon Goddess' pick for her, but she tries not to let it get over her, discouraging her wolf from getting too enthused. Nonetheless, her wolf argues that Devon is not like Damon and that he will protect them.

Chapter 51

Final Thoughts

As we wrap up this review, we feel it's important to stress that, as is the case with many modern werewolf novels, some suspension of disbelief is bound to happen. In that sense, the author attempts to present characters with problems everyday people struggle with, including some very grotesque ones. A clear example of the latter is Alpha Damon's "uncanny" obsession with a teenager.

That said, while the story touches upon mature and intricate topics, the characters can sometimes come off as superficial or even childish, with few brief moments of brilliance. This is just a minor complaint that should not detract from the amazing experience this novel offers from chapter one, but it's one we shouldn't sweep under the rug.

Speaking of characters, probably the most interesting one is Devon King, as he seems to add a pinch of humor to an otherwise somber story while also being a total chad!

Another aspect worth praising is the novel's length, though, in all honesty, perhaps it could have benefitted from having just a few more chapters, which is the exact opposite of what tends to happen with a lot of web novels nowadays.

After everything has been said, we can definitely recommend "The Alpha's Abused Mate" to those who fulfill the age requirements and who fancy werewolf tales!
