Author Introduction

The author of "The First Heir" goes by the name Master Yu Who Smokes, but we know almost nothing about him/her. From the little we can attest, he/she seems to have a knack for writing exceedingly entertaining Urban stories with tons of emotional appeal and high-fantasy overtones.

Characters

The leading plot-moving characters in this tale are Phillip Clarke and Wynn Johnston. We'll first describe these two before proceeding with other prominent secondary characters.

Phillip Clarke

Phillip was a rebellious child of the Clarke family who never wanted to be associated with them or their riches. That said, in order to become self-reliant, he understood he had to work hard from scratch, so he launched an independent startup that, sadly, didn't do so well. This really bogged him down, and he ended up resorting to low-profile jobs.

Wynn Johnston

Wynn is a beautiful and intelligent young woman who, to the amazement of her peers, ends up married to an otherwise unenticing Phillip. In contrast to Phillip's underwhelming professional career, she's a marketing manager for a major company and is the one member who brings the most food to the family table. Her marriage to Phillip didn't sit well with the Johnstons and made her fall out of favor with her parents.

Other Characters:

Mila Clarke: Phillip's and Wynn's sweet daughter, who is unfortunately afflicted with a congenital heart disease

Juan Parker: Phillip's former best friend until Wynn entered their lives

Howard Lowe: A close acquaintance of Phillip.

Plot

The story begins with Phillip taking his daughter Mila to the hospital due to heart failure. He feels utterly guilty for not providing for his daughter in these dire times, especially knowing he always had the possibility to turn things around. Meanwhile, Wynn is quick to put the blame on him if something were to happen to Mila. Her accusation is not totally unsound, however, for Phillip was always too prideful to seek help from her parents.

Upon getting his card declined by the hospital's "payment department," he seeks a loan from his buddy Howard, who gets in a heated argument with his fiancée Ruby after she learns he was willing to hand Phillip the money they saved for the wedding. Witnessing this scene, Phillip decides to decline the loan and call up the chairman of Apex Group, one of the companies owned by the Clarke family (and of which Phillip is the sole inheritor).

"I Accept the Inheritance"

He's finally convinced to accept his father's inheritance, especially after seeing Juan Parker attempting to one-up him in front of Wynn by offering the money to pay up Mila's hospitalization fee. He's well aware that Juan is doing all this to get Wynn's affection, so by letting him have his way, Wynn would ultimately see Juan as the hero and Phillip as the villain.

He takes a bag full of money from the Apex Group office and takes it to the hospital. He then throws the bag in front of both Juan and Wynn, to their astonishment. For a long time, he would receive frequent complaints from Wynn that he didn't support his family enough, but behind the scenes, he would pour large amounts of money to make sure both her career and their daughter's health improved.

Becoming a Lord

Finally becoming aware of his true origins, Phillip engages in a very violent turf war, acquiring increasingly powerful skills as he decimates his foes.

Hot Chapters

These are, so far, some of the most exhilarating chapters in the entire book:

Chapter 937

Cecil Dane, one of the most powerful men in the South River District, is stupefied as he learns that Phillip was responsible for Jay Drago's demise. Jay Drago was one of the five dragons of the South and a force to be reckoned with, yet this apparently frail man was able to defeat such a monster. Cecil stares in fear as Phillip casts a witty smile.

Chapter 4000

Phillip confronts the leader of the Shade Guild, Lydon, a formidable fighter capable of controlling the laws of ice and metal. At first, Phillip's "laws of fire" can't melt the ice cage that Lydon formed around him, but there's probably a hidden power that Phillip is getting ready to unleash!

Final Thoughts

"The First Heir" is a very trippy CEO novel that seems to suffer from a mild identity crisis. At first, everything seems pretty grounded, and you're not expecting anything other than a family drama with some romance thrown in. Eventually, the plot transitions away from its more reality-based approach and enters Eastern fantasy and turf war territory (no pun intended).

While we certainly praise the author for venturing off and treading uncharted territory, some readers may feel rightly alienated as they reach later chapters.

On a more positive note, this shift may somehow justify the long 4000+ chapter list, and "Master Yu" successfully manages to keep the reader entertained as it happens. Also, Phillip's impressive character arc makes the entire experience worth it.

In summary, if you fancy CEO novels with some embedded otherworldly elements, "The First Heir" may be the next favorite on your reading list!
