A CRUEL TRUTH

Finally. The dark days suddenly left like a dream and the light he had not seen for a while had finally come. He was leaving prison. After 12 years of being stuck without hope, he had a chance. He wanted to know everything. What had happened to his girlfriend, Khloe? And why he had not seen her even once after he had been sentenced. Was she dead? Or was she alive?

The entire hall gathered with people who were cheering and slapping for him immediately after he came out. He had not expected it but it showed his life had not been all bad. Smiling as he passed through, Jake walked through as they patted his back congratulating him.

“God father." Jake said as he ran to meet Franco who was standing near the door.

“ Look at you. When I first met you, you were a teenager. You were so scared and sad because of this place. Look at you now. All the people you have saved came out to see you out. Good luck. Remember what I told you. Keep this for me too." Jake heard Franco say as he placed it in his pocket.

No one knew what it was but they had their eyes on them. It was no secret how rich Franco was. They thought it would probably be a check or something.

“ Is it what I think it is? Godfather, I cannot.” Jake said as he dipped his hand inside his pocket.

“ Keep it. I need you to have it. Don’t worry about where you will stay. You can stay in my mansion. My children won’t object to it.” Franco said with a chuckle as he tapped Jake’s back.

Nodding his head, Jake agreed before leaving. This was his first time taking in the scenery outside the prison. 12 years ago when he had arrived in front of this prison gate, he had been so afraid. His head started to imagine all sorts of things from the movies he had seen about them. His one hope had been Khloe. He didn't want to experience the hell he had been through. Maybe there was a reason. A reason why she had stopped visiting after the trial. Her father did not like him. As long as he knew their secret, he might not object that much.

“ Taxi!” Jake shouted as he walked down away from the prison gate.

Arriving in front of the Fisher family house, Jake looked through the car window in amazement. The house had been expanded and now it looked like a palace. Abraham Fisher who was Khloe’s father was the patriarch of the family was a stern, ruthless man. He didn't care about anything that didn't benefit him including his own daughter. His son, Kennedy had turned out just like him. When they were back in high school, Kennedy had already become the king of boys. He had gotten whatever girl he wanted and the girls he dumped at the end of the day, never attended school the next day for some reason. Jake knew that something dark had happened in their school but instead, he had fallen for the princess of the school, Khloe Fisher.

“ You can come out now. The gas is still running. You will pay extra.” Jake heard the driver say bringing him out of his thoughts.

Coming out of the car, Jake paid the driver before walking off to the gate. He knew that Khloe would be surprised to see him. He had changed a lot after 12 years and now he was bigger. They were both adults.

Knocking on the gate, Jake waited for someone to come and answer him. It was at that moment when the gate opened that he finally realized, something was going on.

“ Who are you?” Jake heard the gatekeeper ask.

“ I- Is something happening here? Why are there a lot of guests?” Jake asked as he looked at the numerous guests going inside.

They were all rich conglomerates from around the country. Even when he was in prison he had been keeping an eye on them. They were now known to be one of the most powerful families in the country after Adrian had somehow managed to secure the position of mayor in the state.

“ There is an event. Someone is getting married.” The gatekeeper said.

“ What? Who is getting married? Adrian? In that case, I should probably go and say hi then.” Jake said as he was about to make his way to the house.

“ Stop. Where are you going? Who said that you could go anywhere?” The gatekeeper asked making Jake stunned.

“I know Jake. He is my friend. We went to the same school together and Khloe is my girlfriend. I know this family.” Jake said as he pointed to the house in front of him.

“ Yes. And I know the president. Who are you trying to deceive? Lady Khloe is your girlfriend? Then who is she getting married to? Lady Khloe and Theodore have been dating for five years. How can she be your girlfriend?” The gatekeeper asked.

“ What? Dating for five years? That’s impossible.” Jake said as he looked at the gatekeeper.

A few minutes later, Jake came out of the gate feeling like a complete idiot. Why? Why was he finally finding out about the truth just now? He had hung onto the hope of seeing her again as if his life depended on it. Now he was just finding out how foolish he had been all this time. Memories of his high school days still seemed to be like yesterday. The first time he had seen Khloe.

Her beautiful wavy brown silky hair and her blue eyes had enticed him from the moment he had met her coming out of the house. The Fisher family house was near the bus station so he had always passed in front of their house while heading to the bus station with his brother, Julian. She had always been like a high mountain top that he couldn’t reach.

“ Wait. Is that Jake?” One of the guests coming asked as she pulled her friend so they could go see him.

Tapping Jake on the arm, they pulled him out of his thoughts. It was Anna and Nicole. The two of them were Khloe's best friends and confidants. Always stuck to Khloe’s side like glue, it wasn't a surprise that they had come for the wedding.

“ It’s him. Weren’t you the one that was locked up for killing someone? You were Khloe’s boyfriend back in school.” Jake heard Nicole say making him roll his eyes.

Luckily he had worn his hoodie up to cover his face. They had been one of his biggest problems while dating Khloe back then. Not wanting them to continue talking to him, Jake dragged his hoodie to cover his face as he left ignoring them.

Heading to the corner, Jake hid his face as he watched them go inside the house. The gatekeeper let them inside immediately since their parents were all rich people known in the country.

Falling to the ground, Jake couldn't help but cry his heart out as he realized how much he had lost. He had lost everything and his years had gone by in a waste. Khloe was getting married right now. How could she abandon him after everything he had done for her?

“ Hello, godfather.” Jake said as he cleaned his face.

“ Figlio. Where are you right now? Don’t tell me that you went to see your girlfriend?” Franco asked as he signaled his men to leave his room.

“ You knew about it? Is that why you asked me to not come here? I feel like a fool right now. 12 years.” Jake said as he cried seriously in pain.

“ I just found out about it. My daughter came to see me and she told me about it. I am deeply sorry my son. You finally have the chance to start over again. Don’t waste it on her and just move on.” Franco said.

“ How can I? I have always known just how cruel the Fisher family was but they have gone too far this time. Help me godfather. I need your help.” Jake said.
