They arrived at his mother's house late into the night, the entire events of the day had taken much of their energy. The quiet of the evening was broken only by the occasional rustle of leaves in the wind and the distant call of a night bird. His mother’s house was a small and cozy one and Adrian made a passing joke about it as they entered. His mother, although a little excited to be with her son and wanting to speak to him as long as possible, didn't press them much, she could sense their weariness. They exchanged only a few words, the bare minimum needed to catch up on pleasantries, before the weight of their exhaustion overcame them all.

Adrian and Rose, barely able to keep their eyes open, gratefully accepted the offer of the spare room. It was the only one in the house, but it was comfortable, although she had to remove multiple children's diagrams from there. Apparently, she invited multiple children to her house on Sundays for a drawing session.

The room was modest, with a si

The moment he got off the phone, he turned to the two women who were watching him intently, their eyes filled with curiosity. They had noticed the shift in his tone during the call, sensing that something significant had happened. Rose, the more assertive of the two, immediately rose from her seat and walked over to him. Her eyes, usually calm and composed, now revealed a flicker of frustration. "What's wrong this time?" she asked, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder. It was a gesture meant to offer him support, but Adrian could see the weariness in her expression. This life they were leading, filled with danger and uncertainty, was taking its toll on her. Rose was accustomed to living on the edge, but it was clear that she was growing tired of it all, even though she tried to hide it.Adrian took a deep breath before replying, "It's Hargreaves. Kevin’s stupid stunt lande her in the hospital." His voice was calm, but it was laced with concern, he understood what Rose was going

The next day, Adrian woke up with a start, he didn't necessarily sleep well, his nights were plagued with dreams and they were disturbing to say the least. He had dreamt of Rose dying over and over again and this put him in a haughty mood all morning. He had slept in his quarters in the Brooks' home ground and the entire setting made him feel even worse. He sat up and decided to get up with his morning exercises. It's been a long time since he's done that he was either rushing to go to work early in the morning or he was trying to run from death. After he was done with the exercises he decided to call Rose and check up on her. The girl had gone to her father's house and she felt safe there more than anywhere else. Although he didn't really want her to leave, he knew her safety was paramount and he wasn't going to joke with that. He picked up his phone and called her, the phone rung for almost ten seconds before she picked it up. “Who the hell is this disturbing my morning sleep?” S

He scanned the garden and soon enough, he discovered another dead bird in the distance. He furrowed his brows, a little confused. He glanced around his entire garden, trying to figure out what was wrong. He dropped the bird on the floor immediately and began to examine its body for any signs of injury, but he couldn't see any. He went to the second bird and saw the same thing. This one in fact had a tomato skin glued to the upper part of the beak and Adrian could see it was eating from his tomato. He’d never tried to chase pests away from the farm ever since he got full ownership of it. He’d disregard every procedure to keep them away, since he had no interest in eating from it per say. He just liked the sentimental feeling the garden provided him. He picked up the two birds, plucked two of his tomatoes and carried them out of the garden. Just as he was going in, he encountered Maria and her twins on the way. The lady glanced at him and averted her eyes immediately. The children on

Adrian could see how much pride his mom had in him when he picked up the phone to call Blinks, he could see the corners of her lips twisting into a smile. She was enjoying the moment and the reason she told him to get her a car was because she wanted to see if he could. He smiled, although she never did tell him most things with words and all, he could always pick them up in her subtle actions. She was always guarding against him doing too much or being like his father. She wanted him to be a better person and he could understand that well. He dialed the phone and Blinks picked up. “Hey man,” Adrian greeted. “Hey,” Blinks replied. “What's up?”“Oh nothing much, I was just hoping you can pick me up at the Brooks mansion,” he said. “Me and my mom.”Blinks smiled. “I am in front of the house already. I am still your bodyguard, remember,” he said with a smile. “Can't leave you all by yourself with all this going on, I am going to drive to the front of the gate now,” he said and Adrian

The car zoomed off and Adrian kept frowning at Blinks who was enjoying the moment. The bodyguard glanced at him and then clicked on the car's mp3 while staring at him slowly. Soon enough a rap song boomed in the car and Blinks began to lip sync to it much to Adrian's annoyance. He was about to tell him to turn it off when his mother joined the synching as both of them began to rhyme to the song. He glanced back at his mom and was surprised that she was into songs like this. Normally she listened to something slow and smooth. The fastest song she’s listened to was Reggae, now she was rhyming a rap song word for word and he began to get really jealous of Blinks. It seemed the guy knew his own mother more than he ever could and it made him feel like he didn't pay much attention to her most of his life. He sighed and just closed his eyes amidst their singing and drifted back into his thoughts. Today he didn't really plan to do anything but now he already had two things on his schedule.

Adrian walked out of the office and paused for a moment, leaning against the wall as he waited for Blinks to return. The office hallway was quiet, the hum of air conditioning the only sound as he glanced around, lost in his thoughts. After what felt like an eternity, Blinks came back, casually strolling down the corridor with a cold canned drink in his hand. It was his mom’s favorite brand, the kind Adrian used to see stocked in their fridge all the time. Blinks gave him a quick wink, before heading inside to deliver the drink. He reappeared a few minutes later, a satisfied look on his face.Once they were ready, they headed out of the entire office, they descended in the elevator, a small confined space that allowed them a brief moment of silence before they stepped out into the parking lot. As they approached the car, Blinks turned to Adrian with a curious look. “So you’re not staying around?” he asked, breaking the silence.“No,” Adrian replied firmly. “We have work to do,” he adde

Harley glanced at the package they dropped on the table and stopped what she was working on for a while. She removed her gloves and moved to the end of the lab to wash her hands. She then came back to check the animals. “I can't tell from a glance,” she began as she examined them, checking out their bodies. “This is probably poison, as there is no physical injury, in fact their bone structure seems alright too,” she said with a sigh. “Where did you say you found them?”“I found them in my garden,” Adrian replied. “Did you apply any form of poison or bird repellent?” She demanded. “No. I didn't. I in fact invite them to eat in my garden, that's why I find this very suspicious,” he explained. The woman glanced at the birds again. “Okay, I will need some time to carefully test all this,” she explained. “I will get back to you in three days,” she nodded. “And that will be seven hundred dollars,” she rolled her eyes at Blinks. The latter chuckled and waved at her as they excused her to

Adrian glanced up at his mom and smiled, she was in a serene mood. She had a cup of coffee by her side and she had a magazine in her hand. This was the kind of magazine that she usually read when she was at peace with herself. Adrian guessed coming back to town with an elevated purpose made her feel more at home. She usually came to the haughty remarks of the lady Barbara but that woman dare not try any nonsense with his mom now. He would bury her far down the seven hells… he stopped thinking and then smiled at his mom."Yeah," Adrian replied, taking a seat across from her. "Rose is heading out of town for a racing competition."Hailey raised an eyebrow, a smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "Racing, huh? She always was full of surprises."Adrian nodded, feeling a sense of pride in Rose's adventurous spirit. But there was a heaviness in his chest, an unease that he couldn't quite shake off."Mom, there’s something I’ve been meaning to talk about," Adrian said, leaning forward.
