Adrian knew that voice now. It was Anthony. The same lawyer that had just been by the house earlier to speak to the whole Brooks family about Sir Brooks death.
His strong, confident voice poured through the phone. “I have something important to discuss with you, Mr Adrian, Sir. Please come to Brooks Castle and Castle tomorrow morning by 10am. Remember, this is something sensitive and crucial that I have to impart to you. Do well to take this seriously.”
And with that the call cut. Several things puzzled Adrian in a way that he was kept awake for long, puzzling over them.
One: Anthony, the Brooks family lawyer who had never answered to anyone other than his master and sole employer, Sir Brooks, had apparently deposited money into his bank account.
A ridiculously large sum of money at that. Why had he done that?
Two: He called him Young Master. How ridiculous could that possibly be? Even Raymond and slow Paschal were not referred to as masters of the house, since their father and mother were the only acknowledged heads. The servants did call them that at times, but Anthony called them by their names.
Three: Anthony had something important to tell him. Something he hadn't mentioned ever before this time. Hmmm, Adrian believed it had to be important for the very busy and highly sought after Anthony to call him himself.
He concluded that he would be there by 10 the following morning. He would tell Linda that he had to go get some needed items for the house in the market.
He finally let himself fall asleep, assuring himself that there was no point puzzling over the matter, since he would have all the answers himself the following morning.
Morning came too fast and Adrian dressed up to go and meet with the lawyer, Anthony. He wore one of his best shirts, a blue T-shirt and black jeans and then a pair of sneakers.
He really hoped he looked presentable enough to appear in front of the great and unnerving Anthony Edwards.
He met Linda, already up and about in the main house kitchen and relayed to her that he would be going to the market to get some fresh vegetables and fruits. Linda didn't mind and was quick to let him go.
He left the Brooks grounds on foot, trekking the long distance to the large gate that separated the Brooks from the rest of the world. The mansion was located on a long stretch of neatly tarred road, with only two mansions on that road.
One belonged to Sir Brooks and the other belonged to the other blue blood family and one of Brooks competitors as well as friends, the Conor McGregor family.
They were extremely rich and Conor McGregor himself had been good friends with Sir Brooks before his death. A shadow fell over Adrian's mood as he remembered that Sir Brooks was now dead. He would greatly miss him.
He just hoped that his memory would be honored and greatly remembered for all the good things he had done and accomplished.
He had called an Uber before coming out here because cabs could not normally be found out here because the people who lived here normally drove their cars.
He entered the cab and was taken to Brooks Castle and Castle. Once there, he entered the large, teeming lobby and headed straight for the reception.
He stopped in front of her desk, and with a slight smile, started to enquire from her. “Good day, I'm Adrian. I have an appointment to stay here today.”
The girl behind the counter wore a bored, sour expression even though she was the first person people saw for directions and information, she didn't seem to care.
“With who, Mister?” she asked Adrian with a disbelieving arch of her brow.
“With Anthony Edwards,” Adrian replied, giving the name of the lawyer and hoping the girl knew where to send him.
The girl shook her head. “The lawyer doesn't hold an office here at Castle and Castle, Sir,” she said with a sneer, “you can go now.”
Adrian stared at her, discomfited by the casual dismissal. “But he told me to meet him here.”
“And how is that my business?” The girls tone was rising now, growing higher and higher with each word.
Adrian glanced around with a tight smile on his face at the people who had turned to look at him. “I am only saying that maybe you should just check the books, or you must know if there is a place where he hosts guests here, as Castle and Castle's lawyer.”
In truth the receptionist knew this, she even knew that it was the office which Sir Brooks no longer occupied, but she couldn't imagine sending up a man who looked like Adrian there to go and cause trouble or scandal for the company.
She looked Adrian up and down. “It seems you are slow at understanding information, Sir,” Adrian really hated how she said the word Sir, what was meant to be her addressing him with respect was turned into a mockery. She continued anyway. “Leave this place, before I call the security on you!”
This time more people heard and Adrian was embarrassed. “You don't understand, he said I must meet him—”
The girl punched a number on her desk, and immediately a couple of uniformed guards approached.
They stood beside Adrian, with hostile looks in their eyes. They already saw him as a menace.
Adrian glanced at the clock up above the girl's head. It was already 30 minutes past 10am, the time he was supposed to meet Anthony had passed. A restless energy assailed him.
“You have to let me meet him!”
The girl turned to the security men. “Remove him from the premises, immediately. He has no appointment and is here to cause a commotion.”
Adrian gasped and glared at her. “I am definitely not here for anything like that. I have only made a simple request —”
But the security guards were already hurling Adrian away, out of the lobby. Two of them had grabbed his arms and yanked him into the air between them, so that his feet didn't even touch the ground but kept jerking back and forth in annoyance and humiliation.
“Let me down! Let me go! What sort of embarrassment is this?”
Another voice sounded behind them just as they were about to throw Adrian out of the revolving doors of the company entrance.
“Get your hands off of him this minute!” The thunderous, authoritative voice yelled.
Adrian was breathing fast, but immediately the security guards let him down, and he got his arms back and they turned to look at the man.
It was Anthony. Anthony was only second to Sir Brooks in the company as everyone knew he was Sir Brooks eyes, ears and even his hands.
Anthony looked furious and his eyes blazed down at the guards. He walked briskly to Adrian and bowed before him.
“Young Master, are you alright?”
Everyone around watched what was unfolding before their eyes and they couldn't believe if they had heard right or even seen right.Anthony had just bowed before Adrian and then called him Young Master. Fear assailed the receptionist as well as the security men. Adrian himself was still recovering from the assault and couldn't believe Anthony was treating him like some royalty or at least an important part of Castle and Castle. He didn't know what to answer. Anthony immediately turned to the guards. “What happened that you would harass Young Master like that?”The security men blanched and immediately started tripping over themselves to explain.“It was Emelds, Sir. She ordered us to remove him from here.”Anthony turned to the receptionist. “And you?” he barked, his voice so cold and harsh it must feel like a whip. “Why did you choose today to reveal your stupidity and lack of professionalism to the world?”The girl gasped, stumbling out of the huge desk that always gave her power to
The statement hit Adrian like a sledgehammer and he stumbled back a few feet on legs made rubbery by that revelation. But then it couldn't be true. None of this was true. “You're wrong, Anthony,” Adrian said, even though he knew Anthony was never wrong about many things. “I'm not Sir Brooks' son, how could that even be true?”Anthony pierced him with a look so full of secrets and meaning. “I have not brought you here without proof or reason. I will explain to you.”Adrian's throat was tight with a feeling he couldn't describe. He waited for Anthony. Anthony went to the buffet unit and pulled out a drawer, he removed documents from it and handed it over to Adrian. Adrian's eyes read it over. DNA test results that proved he was a match to Sir Brooks. His head was reeling. His mother had always told him his father was dead.“But…but how?” Adrian asked, still holding the documents and looking down at them in disbelief. “About the how, I certainly can't tell you. Your mother would expl
It felt like earth shattering secrets kept tumbling out of Anthony's mouth. Sir Brooks had been poisoned?Sir Brooks was a powerful man. And like all powerful men, he had a whole team of bodyguards who followed him everywhere and even security cameras in whatever places he stayed in. Only people he trusted made his food and picked out his wine. For him to have been poisoned, that meant it was someone he really really trusted. Someone very close to him. Perhaps even a member of his own family. Anthony's long legs were uncrossed azs he switched positions and crossed his legs again. “I will not utter the words that I know you are thinking right now, but yes, that is the suspicion. That is why his current condition must remain secret.”“I am only handing you this information because Sir Brooks himself trusted you enough to make you the heir to his entire chain of companies, to everything he holds dear. He trusted you enough to even campaign for you, telling me why he wanted things to b
He should have known that for some good things to happen to him today, something bad would have to come too. He watched in shock as they kissed deeply, the man's tongue sliding into Sandra's mouth as they went at each other. It was only Nana's startled shout of surprise that made them spring apart. They separated and then Sandra saw him. He expected to see guilt and shame on her face. He expected her to come rushing over to him, trying to explain. He expected the man to quietly leave, but that didn't turn out like he thought it would. Sandra rolled her eyes with a distasteful hiss when she saw him standing there, with his mouth open in shock. Adrian's mouth dropped open even wider as he heard the hiss directed at him. “Sandra, you're cheating on me?!” The thunderous question escaped his lips. “What the fuc—, how can you be cheating on me?!”Sandra chuckled as if she couldn't believe the question and the man now turned to look at Adrian. Adrian regarded the man with hate and ang
Adrian went to another store and bought everything he needed. He went home and hurriedly prepared lunch with the help of other maids in the house. They served the food and then waited for the entire family to come downstairs. A couple of them were not around but Lady Barbara was and so was Raymond and Maria Their terror twins were also at home.Ada, the first daughter of the family was home too. But her husband wasn't and the others were all off somewhere. They all sat at the long dining table and Adrian watched as the maids dished out the food. He had never been served food or anything else by anyone in his life. He wondered what it would truly be like to fully be addressed and regarded as the heir to Brooks Castle and Castle. He felt an almost irrational need to excitedly reveal his secret. Like just spit it out and see the reactions on these people's faces. Ada would probably faint, although he didn't know who between her and her mother, Lady Barbara who would faint first, and R
When he returned to his place that night he was glad to have the time to call his mother on the phone. This was not something he could discuss with her over the phone though, so he only asked her when she would be returning. She replied to him that she would be back before Sir Brooks' burial was scheduled to be held and he agreed with her.She has to come back and explain something to him. And tell him how she had kept his real identity secret for so long. And then he called Anthony. There was something he needed him to do for him. “Hello, Anthony,” he said into the phone. He still couldn't believe he had such access to this man who he had respected from afar over the last few years when he had worked for Sir Brooks.“Yes, Anthony at your service, young master.”Adrian still felt weird about the name but he would let it be. “You say I am the master of everyone at Castle and Castle and that my word is law?”There was no hesitation on the other end. “Yes, of course it is.”Adrian nod
Instead of waiting around while the old man explained whatever, Adrian walked away and glided into his office with grace. He sat down on the reclining chair in his office, his head relaxed on the chair as he strained his ears to listen to what was going on outside. He could hear more words than he'd expected, it was still early in the morning and customers weren't that much yet. “What do you mean?” He heard Sandra say, and he couldn't resist and his lips curled into a smile however he quickly stopped smiling. He didn't need to show his contentment for the current situation. He needed to act like he was busy so he started to flip some documents in front of him in readiness for their entrance.“I said, kneel and apologize to him if you are interested in keeping your job,” the old owner said, his tone laced with urgency and fear. Adrian didn't understand why the man was acting like that, he didn't necessarily give off a domineering posture when he contacted him, in fact he was quite po
Adrian watched all she did in silence and indeed let himself have a good view. He actually was silent because he wanted her to think she actually had a choice in this matter. He sat down back and watched her sit directly on his table. She was adding a little bit of seduction to the threat, this girl was the devil incarnate but Adrian knew it was good having people like her under him. Considering the kind of power that he held now, he needed to have as many people under him as possible and they should all have different things they each do.“So what do you think about my little request,” she said, holding his tie and bringing her mouth closer to his and he could perceive her usual rose perfume scent. That was one of the things that turned his head towards her, she knew how to actually prop herself up.“I think you are a little mistaken,” he said with a clear face just staring. “Oh, am I?* She asked with a smile, “how so?” She inquired softly. “Well, for starters, I don't actually se
