It wouldn't be long before they connected the dots. "How did you know?" Lance swallowed.
"Oh don't worry." Jodge waved him off. "You're not the one who disrupted the time-continuum"What? What was he saying?Lance raised a brow. "Who did?"Jodge hesitated. "Word has it someone cast a spell wrongly, but it has been rectified." Then his eyes brightened. " That's one of the reasons I love this place"Lance heaved a sigh of relief. So what had happened to him then?"Right" Lance said. "But I've not seen you before? You're new?""Yeah. Transferred from Pentagon College actually."Lance frowned. "Why? Pentagon is another good magic school , next to Wiccan.""Let's just say, their spells and magic teachings got too boring and safe for me and I had to leave. Wiccan offers more inspiring challenges as I've come to realize. I love the risks involved here, they are more dangerous...trains you to be a thorough magician."Lance nodded. "In a way I guess""Come on, let's be friends.. I mean I know your little secret already, and it's safe with me"His little secret? Fear knocked into Lance's head at the boy's statement, he grabbed his hand and pulled him along to a corner, pushing him aside. "What do you mean? What do you know?""Relax..I just know you were somehow affected by the time-continuum"Lance heart skipped a beat, and he swallowed.Jodge knew. Who else knew?"What else do you know?""Nothing else... I overheard your conversation with the other dude back at the Lyceum. And so I guessed.""Well, I'm glad you guessed, because you guessed wrong." Lance said, his heart still in his stomach."Maybe "Jodge smiled. "Come on buddy. I heard today is one of those risky days, as will be the rest of our time here." He put a hand across Lance's shoulder, --who was still trying to place all the boy had said-- and they both walked into the classroom. The Classroom had milk-ash walls and polished brown steel desks with chairs. There was a raised dias, fixed black cupboards on the walls housing instruments, specimens and assortments of potions.A lecturer was already in class, a fair woman in her 30s was seated on an arm chair on a small raised dias, and she observed everyone and everything from her elevated place and from the rim of her oval glasses."Do well to settle down everyone, we don't have enough time!" She called out to the students who were still hustling for spaces and seats.Lance tried to get away from Jodge as stealthily as he could, taking turns around desks until he located one quite far from the boy.He still did not know what the boy was all about, how he came to know of his secret? His transmigration? He sat down, and luckily for him Jodge hadn't taken notice, and hadn't looked for him either. He seemed to be quite distracted on his own."Alright. I believe this is everyone?" The woman said in her sharp and vociferous voice.A young girl with rose beige skin and long dark-blonde hair stood. Her name was Glenda Barbara and she was the Level rep of the class."No ma. Some are still on their way.. unfortunately"The woman frowned. "We are going to continue nonetheless." She stood from her chair and came down the dias." To begin I'd like to introduce myself." She paused."My name is Miss.Eloise, and I believe you all know what your first spell for today will be?" She turned to Glenda, who was excitedly fidgeting."It was on your timetable was it not?""Yes ma" She replied, smart enough to know Miss.Eloise was not requiring her to reveal anything. She turned back to the class. "So what's the first spell you'll be learning today then ?" She raised a finger, indicating she needed a particular answer, from a choice candidate perhaps. Her eyes swept the class ."I need to know my class consists attentive and smart people, smarter than me I hope. "Then she spotted Lance. "Yes, you handsome. What are we doing?"What the--He looked around disconcertingly at the gazes peering at him.Why did she have to call him out now? Of all people? Was he more conspicuous and noticeable than all the other students here?'Ashhh' He wanted to scream.Just when he was beginning to avoid the limelight, and avoid being noticed. Knowing in one way or another he was part, and a big key to what had transpired the other day. What was he going to say now? It already looked like everyone else knew this asides him. Had the “ Lance“ in this world lost that memory when he transmigrated?"I.. umm...Water spell?" He finally surmised. The other level-Two students laughed at him, but Jodge did not, he smiled, along with Glenda who looked at Lance like she hadn't seen him before."Oh dear. Are you sure you're a Level student here?" She said, heading to the other end of the classroom. No, he sort of wasn't. He thought to himself."Well then who knows?" She asked."The Fire spell" Another student answered."Great...This is one of the important spells we teach here and as all of us had seen beforehand, it most times constitutes the very first and crucial final level examination"Liam came into the Classroom then . His black hair was a curly mess, as it looked like he was in a hurry to not miss out on one of the most important spell lessons. He found Lance and shuffled to where he was, taking a seat beside him ."Where have you been? And what took you so long? I woke up and I didn't see you" Lance asked him."You wouldn't believe me if I told you" Liam answered. His eyes showed a lack of sleep along with his disconcerted look."Try me" Lance replied, trying at the same time to pay attention to what Miss.Eloise was mixing in a small black bowl. She held a yellow flower that had teeth-like projections. The plant was quite strange enough."The professor had me summoned during the early hours of the morning." Liam said.Lance's heart skipped two beats. "The professor? Professor Trevor?!" He said, a bit too loudly, drawing Miss.Eloise's attention. "Can you guys quiet it over there pls?" She glared at them briefly before continuing her mixing. "Why, why did he call you?" Lance whispered. His heart was pounding irrationally now, and he hoped Liam hadn't divulged any secret or leaked anything about what happened the night before. He still feared to think what would happen if he was discovered to have had something to do with the altercation, wether he caused it or not. Deportation was most probable and likely the case. Back to the life he hated and abhorred. He was much better off here. Or was he?Liam responded."He asked if there was something I needed to tell him . He thought I couldn't say it there in the Lyceum because I was nervous and worried. So he had to call me into his office and ask me about yesterday." Lance swallowed. He had been forced to do that a lot lately. Did the Professor alre
Jodge sauntered across the gravel floor on Lance's right. Liam walked at the left side, tugging his purple fabric belt tighter, the purple sky clear and ominous ahead of them. They were five minutes into their journey towards the lake. "It would have been more tolerable if they let us eat our last meals, and to our satisfaction before sentencing us to our inevitable deaths. Wiccan is yet the dumbest school I've ever seen. I mean what kinda school is after their students lives?."Frank kept at their backs, him and Glenda who was also a distance away, a solemn, brooding expression on her face. "Wiccan is actually the best. You won't know that since you haven't been to any other school yet." Jodge frowned at Liam. Liam looked at him like he was about to start an argument he knew nothing about and wouldn't like the outcome. "What did you tell Professor Trevor?" Lance whispered to Liam, deciding to intervene in the argument that was about to erupt. He would rather opt for some peace a
"He has a point " Frank said, speaking for the second time. "It's not a good point." Liam said. "I didn't think you were a scaredy-cat Jodge. I think we should split up, that way we can be done before the time is up. " Jodge seemed impatient enough to come back at Liam, but then he quelled. "I am not scared, but if you guys insist, then let's go our separate ways" " Who is taking this one then?" Glenda asked. There was silence among them for a brief moment, as they looked anxiously at each other."I'll take it" Lance said. "You guys move on" They all nodded and headed out in opposite directions. "Alright. It's me and you dear Liburnum. You better treat me right " Lance muttered when the others had gone off. He exhaled deeply, then crouched beside the plant. It was small in stature, slender and beautiful, almost docile. How could such a thing be that deadly? But it's teeth were long and colorful needle-like spikes, and could reach as far as even the receptacle. And what was eve
"Sorry Miss. Eloise, I'm trying--""Clear your mind of every worry and distraction. Empty it and Focus. Feel the fire, and let it hear your summons, your call, then channel it through with the hand gesture. "Lance tried again, and he was able to clear his head. And when he did so, the emblems surged within him and then he made the pattern as instructed. A slow movement to the right, left, then a final circular motion and the fire appeared on his fingertips. And he wanted to jump for joy. "Good." Miss. Eloise said, moving on to the next person till everyone had yellow emblems snaking away at their fingertips, some looking like blackened scarecrows on fire.He tried to keep the tiny flame alive but it kept flickering out so much that it started annoying him. Jodge who had gotten his right as well, caught Lance's gaze and gave a smug grin. Then in a flash of a moment, his fire had morphed into a small ball and he hurled it towards Lance. "What the--!" Lance exclaimed and swerved
"What are we looking for exactly?" Frank asked. "I asked the ones who were affected and got treated, they said the physicians at the medic center used an antidote that was prepared here. The Nummix antidote" Glenda whispered, straining her eyes to spot what they were looking for in the dark, to no avail. "Right. And we could have just gone to the medic unit, since it's there. Logical enough. I don't see why no one thought of that""I think it's here. It must have been brought back obviously because what's from the Apothecary stays in the Apothecary, you should know that." Glenda said. "So what are we looking at exactly?" Frank said"A black glass jar like the Nummix." Frank said."I honestly didn't sign up for this, what if we get--" . "Being a girl again huh?"Glenda interjected. "It's not about being a girl, I have to say what I'm feeling! " Frank retorted. "Can you guys quiet it down and quit bickering all the time " Jodge said. And they searched on in silence for a while, th
"""""Jodge heard it too, and he had stood quietly from his seat, trying not to alert anyone and look conspicuous as he went in search of the voice. He left the back entrance to the Lyceum, reaching the small room that was divided into two hallways. One on the right led to the various Forts, and the other on the left, to the deeper parts of the Wiccan fortresses. The one on the left had grey-stone walls similar to a labyrinth and had dimly lit lamps in their sconces fixed to the wall. It interested him mostly because it was off limits to students, and he'd not being there yet. Then he heard it again. "Jodddgggee" And he shivered, in a way that felt good. The voice was faint, light, and distant, and it was coming from the hallway with grey-stones. He looked back for any chance of someone lurking around or having followed him, then he ventured into the passage. He took a torch, then thought better of it and dropped it back. The path was lit enough for him to see. On the walls w
"You're going to have to focus " Liam said for the first time since their arrival at the valley. "I'm trying." He cleared his mind again, like Miss. Eloise had instructed and the fire stayed after a few trials. "Good. That's progress. Now try to grow the fire. It doesn't require much... just focus again, and tell the fire what you desire it to do, and it'll obey you" Lance closed his eyes and tried again to focus. And for a moment, he wondered what was going on back at his place, if anyone still remembered him? His colleagues at work and the manager who had sacked him. That was just about everyone he knew in his life, after his parents left the world. Perhaps his parents had only transmigrated to another world? Like he had done... and he could find them? Maybe he only had to search for the world they were in and he'd find them. There was no need. A deep part of him knew they were gone forever. He tried to focus back on the task at hand, only he couldn't feel anything again."L
He checked for any indication of someone else being awake, but it was only an occasional stir from Lance on his bed, and grunting. When he was satisfied he wouldn't be caught or followed, he went out of the dorm and down to the lobbyroom which was also empty. The metal door to the Lyceum and other Forts were locked. Luckily for him, Fort A was the only fort that had naturally open access to the labyrinth as it was on the left side, opposite the entrance to the lobbyroom. He tiptoed across the floor to the hallway, and then paused to check for voices, or signs of any staff still awake, or even the professor. But there was no voice. It had stopped calling his name. And the hall was empty. And so he went into the labyrinth. He took one of the torches this time around and continued on his way. He had gotten to the place where he hid before, the caved in boulders, when he saw the faint glow. Then he came upon a rocky open space, where the glow was brightest, where it was actually
