Johan groaned as he woke up. He had a serious headache that was threatening to open up his brain and his entire body ached with pain. He rolled to his side feeling that he was lying down on a soft bed not the ground he had collapsed in. Lucas probably had brought him home after that mishap.
He whined at the light that was coming into the room through the opened window. It was too early for this. If he had slept through the rest of the previous day and through the night, it means that he had drained the last ounce of energy during the reading.During reading, he tried as much as possible not to go overboard but sometimes his inquisitive nature would push him towards the edge.Johan turned to the other side of the bed, opening his eyes once again and this time seeing the wall that told him that it was his room. He was relieved that he was lying down in his room and on his bed. He rose up and dragged himself out of bed making his way to the bathroom. Even moving his body was tiring.Johan splashed water from the running tap, washing his face. He sighed as he lifted his eyes to look at his reflection on the mirror. The person that looked back at him was a mess. He looked like those zombies from the walking dead.Johan blinked at his reflection, “You look like a mess Johan… “, he said to himself. He heard a voice behind him, “I agree with that Johan, you look like a mess. Actually, you’re a mess”, Erik commented resting his body on the door frame with his hands in his pocket.Johan looked at his brother’s reflection through his mirror and one thing was obvious, he was not happy. He growled as he turned around to face Erik slightly resting on the door frame as he crossed his arms in front of him.Johan feigned a smile, “…good morning to you Erik. How was your night?”. He asked hoping that he would be free from the nagging that was yet to come.Erik snorted at him, “You mean the night I spent taking care of your sick dumb ass or the one where I was answering your stupid questions?”, he blurted out.Johan winced, if he was mumbling words in his sleep or running a fever, then last night had been one hell of a night. Funny thing was that when he had one of those nights, he forgot about it totally the next day. Sometimes Erik would tell him and sometimes he wouldn’t. He hoped last night was not one of those nights when he would cling to Erik. When they were younger, he would wake up in Erik’s arms. As they grew up, Erik started slipping out of the room before Johan woke up in the morning. He had caught his brother one time when he woke up before Erik and had pretended to be asleep until his brother woke up and left the room.“Was it that bad?”, Johan whispered.Erik’s gaze softened, “ It was that bad…”, he replied. “You know how it is when you go into a fire crime scene Johan and yet you keep doing it. I’m tired of receiving these call. You’ve had your fun, I think it’s time to move on”. He said.Johan frowned, “they called you when I collapsed?”, he asked surprised. He had thought that someone had carried him out of the scene after he collapsed, maybe Lucas or one of the forensic guys. He should have known that it was Erik. Whenever he had one of his breakdowns, he made sure that nobody touches him. Only Erik was able to come near him and touch him.Erik pinched his nose, “Yes, Lucas called me when you had stayed in there for almost an hour. He was scared that going in could spook you. Imagine if I was in court Johan. Can we please stop this?”, he stated.Johan shook his head, “ I will try to be careful next time Erik, I promise. And I told him not to call you. I don’t know why he keeps doing it”, he said pouting his lips.Erik had been begging him to stop for a while now and he couldn’t imagine himself stopping. He had the abilities and if he could help someone out, then he was going to use it.He had discovered that he could use his power to help people when he was nine years old and was still learning how to control his powers. An elderly woman had walked up to him holding his arm and begging if he had seen her bag. Before Erik could run from where he was to pull him out of the woman’s grip, he had seen her memories and told her where she had left it.Erik shook his head turning around and walking into the bedroom with Johan behind him. He went to the window and stood in front of it peering at the ground below. “ that was the same promise you made to me the last time. And yet it still happened again. I don’t like this anymore. I know that you want to help and all but it’s…”, he stopped biting his lips.Johan couldn’t see his brother’s face but he knew the expression the face held. He knew that it hurt Erik to see him hurt every single time and it hurts him to know that he was making his brother feel that way. The only thing he could do was promise to be careful. He couldn’t stop. He had this abilities for a reason.Erik released a bated breath turning around to face him, “I know that you wouldn’t want to stop, so how about you go in with a partner, huh?”, Erik suggested.Johan scoffed, every body knew that he worked alone. A partner would mean someone who would know about his abilities and in as much as he trusted Lucas to protect his secret, he didn’t trust anyone else to have his back.Erik had pulled strings to get him that position in the force without having to go through all the various processes. Letting someone close to him was not an option. He sighed, “I work well alone, I don’t need a distraction while I’m doing a reading Erik”, Johan told his brother.Erik moved closer to him covering the distance between them as he circled his arms around Johan’s waist. “I know, the person would stay far away from you but close enough to keep an eye on you”, he said with a crook smile.Johan knew what Erik was trying to do and as much as he knew it, he still let himself be held that way. Only Erik could touch him without having memories flood into his mind. Maybe because he had become so familiar with the guy’s memories that his brain was cancelling it out every time. He was deprived of touch and would gladly welcome it anytime.Johan smirked closing his arms around Erik’s neck, “what if this person is clumsy and keeps making noisy sounds?”, he asked rolling his head to the side.“This person will be skillful in the act and stealth”, Erik told him.The way Erik was talking, it was as if he already had someone who was going to be his partner.Johan pursed his lips, “don’t tell me!... you already have someone in mind Right?”, he asked eyeing his brother.Erik looked taken aback by the insult, “Seriously!, how well do you know me…”, he muttered.Johan sighed releasing Erik and walking over to flop on his bed. He felt relieved as his body touched the soft bed. “I could stay here all day…”, he moaned into his pillow.Erik Chuckled, “I wished you would. Dad is already complaining about your job. I told him that you’re just interning and would be rounding up next month”, he said. Johan raised half of his body up from the bed, “You told him what?, i'm not interning Erik…”, he hissed.Erik shrugged making his way to the door, “either chose to have a partner or stop next month, your choice baby brother”, he said before leaving the room.Johan groaned burying his face inside his pillow. He was going to kill Lucas for calling Erik to the crime scene. His phone beeped and he was half tempted to ignore the device but when it beeped again, he picked it up from his nightstand to check the message. Talk about the devil and he shows up.It was from Lucas and as usual very brief, 'meet in the café across the street in an hour'. Johan let his head fall back on the pillow, work was calling so he had to get up and get ready. He took a deep breath. For now, he was going to assume that the conversation between him and his brother didn’t take place. If Erik brought it up again then he was serious about it.He striped and stepped into his bathroom stall. A warm shower later and he was ready to face the day. He opened his drawer and took out his pain relief pills, he swallowed one and grabbed the bottle of water on the table, drinking a little before he left his room.Johan entered the café thirty minutes after leaving the house, the only reason was that he had driven the Porsche instead of the other car. He looked around the café and saw Lucas already seated in his favorite position with a cup of coffee in his hands. The man drank coffee like he couldn’t function without it. Johan shook his head as Lucas waved him over when he saw him standing by the door. Johan noticed that the café was unusually crowded that morning so he would have to be careful so as not to touch anything. He slipped his hands into the pockets of his leather jacket and walked towards Lucas. That way, he was going to restrain himself from touching anything. He reached Lucas, “Hey Lu…”, he greeted taking the seat on the opposite side facing the man.Lucas eyed him suspiciously, his eyes moving from his face to the hands in his pockets. He lifted his eyebrows, “what?”, he asked.Johan shrugged looking around the shop. Lucas followed his gaze and then understood what was going o
Lucas had texted him the time and place for the meeting that evening, but before then, he decided to visit the orphanage. It had been a long time since he came to see them, he had been so busy with cases and he knew that if he didn’t come to see them now , then it would be when the case was resolved which he didn’t know when.Johan gently climbed the stairs leading to the front door and when he got in front of the large door, he pressed the bell and waited for the door to be answered. It didn’t take long for someone to open the door. The happiness of seeing him was evident in their eyes.“ my boy…”, sister Marge said, opening her arms and pulling him into a hug. Johan allowed her embrace him even though it was making him see some of her memories, especially the one he would always see, that had him in it the day Erik brought him to the orphanage. He smiled as he closed his eyes, of course she wasn’t aware of his ability and so didn’t know what she was doing.“ how have you been?, It’s
Isabella Pierce parked her car at the empty spot and rushed out of the car immediately. This was the second house that was burnt down within the space of three weeks, it was no coincidence that this had happened again. She lifted the yellow tape and bent slightly so she could pass. The officer standing guard at the crime scene moved to stop her from entering but paused when she flashed her identity card. “ SID … “, she hissed, walking past him over to the crime site. She heard him asking what the SID was doing here. Well, this was the second fire case in three weeks, so the force thought it wise to call in the special intelligence division.“ Who is in charge here!”, She asked, her voice a bit loud so everyone could hear her. The man who obviously was in charge walked towards her.The moment Isabella saw him, she groaned. Detective Hayden was not an easy man to work with. The police force had it’s finest and he was one of them.“ who’s asking?”, detective Hayden asked, approaching her
“ you’re fucking kidding me!”, Isabella cursed. Superior be damned, she didn’t care about what anybody was going to tell her about respect. They couldn’t possibly expect her to babysit a baby officer in the force just so he doesn’t go and injure himself. Her chief sighed, “ this is the only way we can solve this case. It’s both an arson case and a homicide case if you haven’t noticed and with the ways things are going, I think we have a serial arsonist on our hands too”, he informed her. There had been another fire just like the two that had happened a month ago , the same mode of operation and with the evidences that she was seeing, it looked like it had been committed by the same person.“ Christ!, You’re asking me to partner with a child because he could help us with the case?”, she repeated what he had told her earlier. He bit his inner cheek, staring intently at her. Isabella was among the best agents they had in their division. He had requested for her transfer three years ago af
The traffic was bad and they were stuck in between two vehicles. Isabella tried driving back but someone thought it wise to block the path, another car was behind her. She didn’t blame the person, after all they were all heading to somewhere. She sighed, she hated Stockholm traffic especially when it was nearing evening. It was as if everyone in the city had decided to come out for a ride and flooded the highways.“ whoever thought it was better to have the SID miles away from the headquarters!”, She muttered.Sophia Chuckled and changed the radio station, pausing to listen to what they were saying.Their division building was a bit on the other side of town rather than at the police headquarters and so if they needed to make reports or attend meetings, they would have to pass through the high way to get to the headquarters.“ What’s happening?, Why is the road blocked?”, Sophia murmured beside her, sticking her head out of the car to check if she could see the cause of the holdup.“
A black Mercedes Benz was parked in his space. The space was always reserved for him and to make sure that nobody parks there, a sign was put up to show that the space was for him. Special consultant. He sighed, driving back so he could park somewhere else. A car was already behind him, blocking him from moving.“ ahh!!...”, he yelled. This was why he hated coming to the police station. “Someone had better have an explanation for this mess up”, he muttered as he stepped out of his car.He angrily stepped out of the car and locked it up. They would fine him for wrong parking and he would fine the person that parked in his space.Johan gingerly entered the police station and headed straight to the crime investigation division. He looked over at Lucas’s desk and saw that the man was not around. So the meeting had started he thought. He moved towards the briefing room and without knocking, entered the room. The meeting had already started, so everyone turned towards him as he entered the
“ Hell freaking NO!”. Isabella was taken aback when he, her supposed partner, yelled out his response. Sincerely speaking, she had been expecting him to be willing and docile about the whole arrangement but his reaction two seconds ago was an indicator that he was not in agreement with the decision, so he wasn’t the one who was calling the shots.“ I didn’t agree to have any partner and I don’t want one, I work alone and that’s it. “ he said.Isabella scoffed, if he worked well alone, then why did they need a partner for him. All she knew was that he was a special consultant for the police, CID to be specific. What he did for them, she didn’t know.“ what exactly is your work again?”, she asked.“ none of your business!”, he fired abruptly.Isabella scoffed, this is great, just great. Not only did she have an amateur as a partner, she also had a secretive partner too.Well, she wasn’t the one who needed a partner, he was the one that needed a partner. She was good either way.“ I assu
Erik's POV Erik checked the time that evening and sighed, he was working late again and had forgotten the time. Working this late meant that he would be staying over at the office rather than go back home because he hated driving late at night.Someone knocked on his door. so he wasn’t the only person staying over at the office, he thought.“ Come in…”, he answered.Brandon poked his head into his office, “ I saw your lights on, working late again?”, He asked.Erik sighed, relaxing on his seat, “ Yeah... You?”, He asked.Brandon opened the door to allow him enter the office, “ I called my driver, he should be on his way.”, he replied.Erik nodded, he thought as much. To drive at night by this time would need someone who is focused and not someone who could fall asleep on the steering wheel after working for long hours.“ how’s the case going?”, Brandon asked.“ As expected, they refused to sign. Still demanding that the company shuts down or pay them a huge compensation for wrongful
“The only pictures worth making are the ones that are playing with fire.” ~ Billy Wilder Isabella walked into the forensic department of the police force with renewed zeal and focus. She moved with a strong and firm desire to catch the arsonist. After hitting a head block for weeks, she was hoping for a miracle. She has left the hospital after Johan had woken up and even though she had seen him briefly, they had not spoken to each other. What was she supposed to say, ' hey, I’m sorry for not backing you up', ' I’m sorry you got hurt while I was being a mess', ' I’m your partner and I suck'.She sighed, pushing the doors to the lab where the evidence from the crime scene was being analyzed. She spotted Hayden before he saw her.“ Hey” Hayden called with a wave. She went to stand next to him, looking through the transparent glass separating them from the lab.“ hey, what’s the news.?” She asked Hayden. The man flicked his gaze briefly to her before he sighed.“ you know
“ Mikael!, Wake up.” Someone called him, shaking his shoulders. He frowned, who the hell was Mikael, he thought as he forced his eyes open to look into the green eyes of the familiar man that now frequently appeared in his dreams.“ C’mon son, you’ll be late for school if you don’t get up, plus your mom would eat my head if you’re late…” the familiar man said.Johan’s frown deepened, what the hell was going on. The man was calling him Mikael. Was he hallucinating or something, and school?, What school was he talking about, he thought.“Get moving son” the man said, as he dragged Johan out of the bed. He wanted to ask the man who he was, but his mouth couldn’t utter a word even as he was dragged out of bed into a familiar hallway. He tried to remember where he had seen this hallway before, but his memory was coming up short. The man led him to the table and sat him down, before he went about doing other things in the kitchen; making breakfast perhaps. This certainly was not
Isabella stood fixed by the door. She could see Johan clearly from where she was standing, though the door was closed, she could look through the glass opening on the door and see him. He was lying on the bed with an oxygen mask on his face, he had tubes and wires connected to his body that she couldn’t even trace what each was for. Her eyes settled on the monitor where she could see his heart rate. He was alive, that was all that mattered. He was alive. She caught Erik, Johan’s brother staring at her from inside the room, but he turned back to look at Johan as if she was not there. She had a feeling that he understood to a certain degree how she felt and was giving her time to organize her thoughts. The explosion at Norman’s house had shook her. It had triggered another traumatic experience for her where she had to remember her past Memories that she would rather forget totally. Of all the recent episodes that she had experienced, this one was the worse. It had taken her a while be
Erik knew that he was doomed, the moment his father turned to glare at him, he knew that their lies had finally caught up with them. His father smiled as he turned to look at a confused Lucas.“ oh, you’re Lucas?, Johan had mentioned you before…”, his father muttered. Really? Erik wanted to ask, because he highly doubt that his brother had mentioned Lucas to the man before. Erik blinked, what was his father playing at here. There was no way Johan would have mentioned Lucas to their father. He had been hiding the fact that he was working for the police force, so he couldn’t possibly tell his father about Lucas, who is a detective.Lucas smiled with a nod, “ he did?”, he asked surprised. “ that’s surprising …” Lucas muttered as he flicked his gaze to stare at Erik with an arched brow. Erik looked away though, after giving him the ' cut it' sign.“ Yes...so my son was caught in an explosion. I want to know why my son was even in the building in the first place?”, Geoffrey asked. “ I
Geoffrey cannot remember the last time he had driven this fast before, ignoring all traffic rules. He was shocked that a police van had not started following him and asked him to pull over for breaking traffic rules. He was a father who needed to get to his son one way or the other and if getting a speeding ticket would get him to Johan, then fine, he would get one.Geoffrey cut a vehicle that was about to cross into the other lane, he knew he was driving recklessly and could even hear curses from the other drivers.“ How long before I can get to the hospital, Jane?”, he asked the AI system installed in his car.“ at this rate Geoffrey, in five minutes…”, the AI replied.“ let’s make it three minutes then…”, he muttered, stepping on the paddle. “ I would advice against that as it breaks road regulations and can put you in danger…” Jane the AI answered.Geoffrey rolled his eyes, well, good thing he could over look that advice. Different thoughts ran through his mind about Johan. What
“ What?!, Someone got there before you?”, Geoffrey storm bellowed. The man standing before him took a step back and gave a Curt nod, “ yes sir. When I got there, the house had already exploded. I just merely escaped without being noticed.” He explained.Geoffrey ran a hand through his hair, cursing under his breath. Who the hell was doing this and why were they making it look like it was Mancap. This was the fourth time the house with the victims suing Mancap was exploding. It was either someone was intentionally killing them or they were looking for something.Or… The System, it couldn’t be right?. The last time the System surfaced, that was years ago. Years that he had put behind him. He shook his head. There’s no way they were back.“ if this keeps happening, then we’ll have to shift to plan b. For now, stay underground and well hidden. Your face might show up in the CCTV footage near the explosion, stay hidden. I’ll call you when it’s all cleared”, Geoffrey told the man in front o
Deciding to go in, a child needed to be saved first, he stood up, ran over to someone and pulled the thick blanket she was carrying over his shoulder. He briefly saw a memory of the person he had collected the blanket from. She had been drinking earlier, he scoffed.Johan approached the house, he could feel the heat from the fire. He hoped that he would come out of this ordeal alive. He thought about the boy in the fire, if he was feeling this hot, he wondered what the child was going through in the house. He silently said a prayer and entered what was left of the house.“ shit!”, Johan cursed as he touched something that was hot. He has to refrain from touching things. The house was already burning and the fire was spreading to the other side of the house, he needed to be very fast or else he was not going to loose his life, but also that of the child. The decision to go in had been a split second Decision that he made irrespective of whether he found the child or not. There was a fi
Mr. Benson sighed, looking around like he was being watched, “ I don’t know…”, he lied, Erik noticed.“ All I know is that I don’t want to end up like the other families, so leave me alone please and don’t come back here”, he spoke abruptly, slamming the door at their faces. What just happened, Erik arched a brow at Lucas who was also as stupefied as he was. One thing was clear though, Mr. Benson was scared, and the only reason was because he was under threat and someone was watching him. They were on their way to the next house, since Mr. Benson had provided them with little or no information about what was happening because he didn’t want to die, then they had better check in with the other families, if they were acting the same too.“ I need to check in with the guys to know what they’ve gathered so far”, Lucas said beside him, making the call. Erik was less interested in the call Lucas was making and more interested in how to make this case less complicated. With what he knows now,
Johan sniffed the air, “ do you smell that?”, he asked her.Isabella frowned, “ smell what…”, she said looking at him.He closed his eyes as if he was trying to remember what the smell was. He knew it was a chemical but he couldn’t pinpoint what exactly it was. There was no industry around the area, so it was abnormal for that kind of smell to be perceived in the area.Moving slowly towards Norman’s house and following the smell, he stopped when someone held him back.“ what the hell!”, Isabella shouted, pulling him out of his dreamy state. He snapped, Turning, he saw that it was Isabella gripping his cloth. Good thing she had not touched his bare skin, it wasn’t like he could see or read her Memories. He arched his brows at her.Even though they had been able to be civil with each other today, it doesn’t mean she should go around touching him, though he had thought that her touch would irritate him, he didn’t feel irritated, he actually feels like he wanted her to keep touching him
