Dr. Starr's office table was large with only a stack of a few books at the left end. Seated in front of her on the opposite side of the table, I couldn't stop imagining bending her over the table.
Her long dark hair dropped on her shoulders, covering the arm of the blue A line dress, her head was in a straight firm position as she fixed her green eyes on me.
“Mr. Sullivan, there's no way that's going to happen, you won't choose your patient nor would you choose your attending during residency.” She said with a soft, but firm voice.
I wanted to explain to her, I wanted her to know the emotional torture I'll go through if she doesn't change Anna as my partner, but I didn't want her to see the soft part of me.
“Even if emotions were attached?” I finally was bold to maintain eye contact.
She didn't flinch.
“Would you want to tell me more?” She leaned towards me from her side of the table. She placed her elbow on the table, using her arm to support her head.
The curious expression on her face made me realize she had misunderstood my point.
“No ma'am. It's nothing like that.” I knew she'd be thinking I and Anna have been having an affair. I swung my head to oppose the opinion that was building in her head. “I'm not having an affair with her.”
Her eyes widened, she leaned closer.
“It's nothing ma.” I was either being misunderstood or perhaps I misunderstood her. ‘What if she wanted me to make the first move?’
She stared quietly at my direction, her eyes dilated. She must probably want me to make the move, place my lips on hers.
I'd be in trouble if I'm misunderstanding all these gestures, it might be the end of college and medical career for me. I'd practice the treatment pattern she taught us; ‘watch and wait.’
“Sorry ma. I'll leave now.”
She snapped out immediately from her thoughts, or her lust, but whatever is the problem, I'd have to find out.
I phoned Brad immediately after I left Dr. Starr's office. I met him at the cafeteria sitting across a black hair smiling.
Lauren.
“Hi Richmond.” She smiled from end to end. “Join us, please.”
I gave her a smirk.
Lauren is not one to mess with, if she wants something she gets it. She leaves her marks behind and I still have her scars on me.
I dated Lauren for a short period of my first year, she exposed me to most of the habits I fight to stop, partying, drugs and sex. She left me for pain, the same way my mother did, women cause wrecks.
I gave her the once over look, then took my gaze to meet Brad. “Can we talk?” I gestured to Brad, tilting my head to the right.
“What's up bro?” He mouthed a whisper as he approached. My both hands were in my pant pockets as I paced round the corner. “How did it go?”
“Nothing. I think Dr. Starr is going through something.” I paused from the pacing. “She probably wants me? Or I remind her of someone.”
Brad chuckled. “Anna reminds you of your mom, so everyone is now reminded of their pasts.” He laughed. Loud. “Sorry bro.” He said when I didn't laugh with him.
“I'm done.” I started heading for the exit door. “Be careful with Lauren, you know better.” I poked his chest with my finger.
“There’s a party. I'll join, and I'll want you to come bro. You know you're the life of the party.” Brad was excited, and I knew it was because Lauren was coming too.
“BRO” I screamed at him. “Party? With these clowns? I'm not in.”
“C'mon Richmond. For me.” He tried to hold me back.
“I'll pass.”
My anger had almost touched the ceiling, frustrated that I have to be there at that party because of my friend, but my friend is going there because of Lauren.
I frowned, clenched my fist and stormed out of the cafeteria. Angrily, I pulled the door open and wanted to hurry out, not noticing someone was about to come in, fiddling with her phone.
Our bodies collided and her phone came crashing on the floor. I rushed to gather the phone. Our eyes came in contact when I rose to hand over the phone.
“Doctor Starr.” My eyes widened. “I… I… I didn't notice you were… coming.” I mumbled.
“It's okay Richmond.” She flashed out of the intense gaze. “It's my fault.” She was calm and composed.
Dr. Starr didn't notice she called my first name. This was an invitation, we were definitely out of the formal zone and probably I can take my shot.
“I was just heading out.” I finally said, breaking the silent stare that kept between us. My phone buzzed, I reached for it in my pocket.
Dad.
I started moving to the parking lot. My dad wants me to come over to the house.
“I'll be busy, dad. School stress.” I hated being around him. He's always complaining or nagging about things that are not important, probably one of the reasons my mom left.
“I have important information, and you know we need our bonding time.”
I don't care about his bonding time. My day had already been ruined, I won't let him add to it. I ended the call.
Dr Starr's gaze at me replayed in my head, she definitely wants me, that stare confirms it, I could feel sparks from her body when our fingers contacted.
I was distracted by girls who were chattering and laughing. Someone had to be the topic of this gossip.
“She came in just mid session and now she's getting favours from all the boys in school.” One of the girls said.
I knew Anna was the subject of this gossip. I brushed it off and continued walking by slowly.
“I heard she's an orphan, how would she afford the fees?” They all laughed.
“But she's pretty after all,” Haley’s voice came off, with an accent.
Orphan? If she's not my step sister then she's my aunt, but I'd have known about her if she was my aunt. Or is my mom and the man she went off to dead? Is that why my dad wants to meet up with me, so he could tell me my mom passed.
“Dad,” I screamed into the phones mouthpiece. “I'm coming over later this evening.”
