Chapter 01

The blaring and deep honking of vehicles from the bustling road were enough to awaken the dead and rouse even the deepest of slumbers. However, this was not the case for Alonso.

He was in a profound slumber, a result of his three jobs that he had been working tirelessly for some time now. He had not slept a full hour, as he was determined to save enough money to make his girlfriend Lyra's birthday an unforgettable one.

Their date was in a few hours, and he couldn't afford to miss it.

"Hey, you! Get away from there!" a feminine voice exclaimed as she repeatedly hit Alonso with the bag she held. It took several blows before he finally awoke from his nap in front of the lady's store, or rather, more of a prolonged rest.

Like a thief, Alonso sprinted away as he had some deliveries to make and knew he was going to be in trouble.

"Come here, you idiot! Where have you been?" an angry masculine voice bellowed, grabbing Alonso and pulling him out of the store.

"The customers who had deliveries have been calling and hurling insults at us. Some have even cancelled their orders!" he continued to shout while searching for something to hit him with.

Regrettably, he found a stick. "I will teach you a valuable lesson today and show you not to mess with my business, you wretched boy!" the man roared as he repeatedly struck him with the stick.

Alonso found himself in a predicament, one he could not have imagined in his wildest dreams. He had to face the daunting task of telling his boss that he had been sleeping on the roadside due to exhaustion.

How could he explain himself? Would his boss even believe him? These questions raced through his mind as he braced himself for the inevitable confrontation. Nevertheless, he knew that he had to face the music, whatever the outcome may be.

The anticipation was obvious as Alonso held the gift tightly in his hands. It was perfect, a testament to the love he felt for Lyra. He had worked tirelessly to get the right present, and now that he had it, he could not wait to see the smile on his girlfriend's face.

The pain he felt was excruciating, but the thought of Lyra's happiness gave him the strength to overcome it. He knew that this gift would bring them closer together, and he was willing to endure anything to see her happy.

Lyra was everything to Alonso. She had filled the void left in his heart after the death of the man who had given him a second chance at life. He had sworn to himself that he would make her happy, and he had kept that promise, even at his detriment.

She was the reason he woke up every morning, and the thought of losing her was unbearable. He would do anything to keep her in his life, even if it meant sacrificing his own happiness.

"You are fired, you ass-hole, and don’t ever think of coming back to beg” his boss yelled

The words hit Alonso like a ton of bricks, shattering his world into a million pieces.

He had been fired, his boss's insults ringing in his ears as he was unceremoniously kicked out of the building. Humiliation, insults, degrading words, or shame were nothing new to Alonso, but they still stung just as much as the first time he had heard them.

He refused to accept this as his fate, but he knew that he had to pick up the pieces and move forward, no matter how hard it would be.

Alonso felt a twinge of pain in his chest as the reality of his situation sank in. Losing his job meant losing more than just his income; it meant losing his independence.

He had worked hard to achieve certain things, like renting a small apartment and taking his girlfriend on shopping trips. It made him feel like a man, like he was capable of providing for the woman he loved. But now, all of that was in jeopardy. He had to find a way to make things work, for Lyra's sake if nothing else.

Alonso found himself in a predicament. He felt emasculated at the thought of losing his job, especially in front of Lyra. He longed to beg and reclaim his position and regain his sense of manhood, but the urgency of his date reminded him that he had to put his priorities in order.

As he approached Lyra's apartment, he couldn't help but notice the loud music emanating from within. The sound was deafening, and as he walked closer, the sight of drunk people stumbling in and out of the apartment made him feel uneasy. The party was massive and opulent, a display of extravagance that was foreign to him.

Alonso couldn't believe his eyes. Lyra had promised that there would be no party, but now he found himself in the middle of one. He pushed through the crowd, searching for his girlfriend, hoping to find her before the situation got out of hand.

“Hey, please have you seen Lyra?” He asked a young woman about Lyra's whereabouts, but she ignored him, continuing to dance with her partner.

Alonso persisted, calling out Lyra's name as he pushed his way through the throng of people. Suddenly, a woman's voice spoke from behind, and Alonso turned to see Lucinda, a girl he despised.

Lucinda asked if he was looking for Lyra, and Alonso replied in the affirmative, eager to find his girlfriend and get out of the party.

Lucinda, Lyra's best friend, had always been a thorn in Alonso's relationship with Lyra, constantly trying to push rich men in her direction to break them up.

Despite this, Lyra remained faithful to Alonso, but Lucinda's disapproval never ceased. Now, Alonso was desperate to find Lyra at the party and leave with her for their date.

“Your girlfriend is somewhere having fun right now and I wouldn’t want you to disturb her,” she said as she vigorously ate the gum in her mouth and made annoying sounds, which wasn’t too obvious because of the loud music.

“Please tell me where she is now, we have a date to attend,” he said

“Date! What could be better than this?” she asked as she spread her arms open showing him the apartment and the obvious party

Alonso wasn’t moved but wanted to see his girlfriend as he began to feel uneasy

“Just please tell me where she is?” he pleaded even though her presence despised him

“Just wait for five minutes and I will take you to her,” Lucinda said as she walked away before he could say a word.

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, he grew impatient and began searching for Lucinda.

He scanned the crowd anxiously, tapping his foot and keeping a close eye on his watch.

But as he looked around, his heart sank. There was no sign of Lucinda or Lyra. Where could they have gone? And what was happening at the party that, he didn't know about? Alonso felt a sense of dread wash over him as he realized he might be in over his head.
