Upon their arrival, Watt introduced the place to the new irregular, “Welcome to the MDWD, this is the place where we resolve issues like… irregulars, you were taken out the timeline and brought here to find a suitable timeline for you to live.”
“You are Irregular no. 199.” Watt glanced at the documents as he added, “You the 199th Irregular we found.”
The girl, however, was still disoriented, and she didn’t get a thing about what Watt just said. The girl asked, “199?”
Watt nodded as he continued to explain, “Irregulars are those who do not belong in any timeline and are especially dangerous when taken back to their origin timeline- in your case, it’s the year 2020 at Earth J114.” He added as he led the girl to the higher-ups, “They will explain everything further.”
The girl looked back at him, a blank look on her face, so Watt cleared his throat and shoved Ethan inside first. He said, “Ethan will be with you inside.”
“What?” Ethan protested, “Why me?”
“You’re an Irregular yourself.”
Ethan sighed and went inside with the girl. He gulped hard as the higher-ups continued on with their job. They typed and organized towers of files by their desk. Ethan cleared his throat, “Uhm, excuse me.”
Almost immediately, all of them stopped and glanced at Ethan with a dissatisfied look on their faces. One of them remarked, “Ah, Ethan Young, irregular no. 23, what brings you here? Did you cause another ruckus?”
“No!” Ethan defended himself, “I’m not that clumsy.”
“Yes, you are.”
“Fine, I am but irregular uh, 190 something is here. She’s the irregular we tracked down on Earth J114 at the year 2020.” Ethan informed them, “Watt told me to bring her to you.”
The higher-ups sighed, “Ah, the number of irregulars fluctuated recently.” They cleared their throat in an oddly synchronized way, and they said all at once as if they were one being, “Irregular no.199 of Earth J114, you are hereby brought here to be examined by us at the MDWD where time does not run. What is your latest memory?”
The girl looked at them confused and shook her head.
“Name?”
She shook her head once again. The higher-ups took note of this and remarked, “It’s another case of a blackout.”
“Black… out?” The girl asked
Ethan whispered to her, “It’s a case when irregulars completely have no memories of anything. It’s the same case with me.”
“Is that a good thing?”
Ethan nodded, but before he could answer why, the higher-ups announced, “Since you are another case of Blackout, you are entitled to choose a timeline of your preference to live at- except 2020 or work here where time does not run. Like Ethan.”
“There are classifications of Irregulars: the Blackouts, the Partials, and the Conscious.” They added, “Each to which is determined by how much they can remember, irregulars that are conscious remember everything- they are automatically annihilated. Conscious irregulars are not able to live at any timeline because their memories are intact even after realizing that they are irregulars and are, therefore, a threat to our policy of the time.”
“ And the partials?”
“They are rarest.”
“And why is that?”
Ethan answered, “In my time of detecting Irregulars, I have never encountered such a case where one is partially conscious, meaning he or she retained a couple of vital information.”
“Correct.” The higher-ups remarked, “They are the rarest and the most dangerous for their unpredictability. They are capable of remembering everything all at once or never at all. They can cause unwanted changes in the timeline in hope for revenge or anything at all.”
“And what do you do with them?”
There was silence in the room. The higher-ups stopped what they were doing and paused for a while- even Ethan had no idea about it. He never really asked since he never really met one.
Ethan and the girl looked at them for an answer, but the higher-ups changed the topic, “Chief 102 will be in charge of finding you a suitable timeline.”
“Watt.” Ethan corrected, “Just… naming everyone and everything with numbers is confusing.”
“Watt will be in charge of you. You may now leave.”
Just as Ethan and the girl were on the way out, the girl stood firmly and asked, “But I’d like to know more. Can I… remember?”
They were once again taken aback by her boldness and curiosity. Most irregulars are just dazed and accepted what the store had for them, but this girl was different. Out of all the irregulars Ethan had encountered, this girl was incomparable.
However, she was still… a case of Blackout.
The higher-ups shot Ethan a look, and Ethan frowned as he answered the girl, “Unfortunately, cases of blackout are not capable of remembering.”
“Ah… is that so?”
Ethan nodded.
The two of them headed out the higher ups’ quarters, and outside, Watt was waiting for them. Watt remarked, “So how’d it go?”
“Still scary as ever.” Ethan replied, “Well, I leave her to you, Watt. I’m off to work.”
Just then, Watt grabbed Ethan by his collar, which caused Ethan to choked. Ethan protested as he wiggled out of his grasp, “Hey! What the hell?”
“On that note.” Watt cleared his throat, “I have urgent matters to attend to, so I leave her to you.”
“Wait, What the hell am I supposed to do? Bring her to work with me?” Ethan protested.
Just then, Watt used his squishy and purple tentacles to wrap around me as he quickly dashed away with his suitcase, “Wow, that’s actually a good idea. Tag her along and maybe she should see how Timekeepers work at the different timeline and all.”
“Hey! That’s your job-“ Ethan started, but before he could finish, Watt was long gone. His last words before entering the portal were, “Just make sure she doesn’t go back to 2020! I leave her to you then!”
Ethan awkwardly cleared his throat and glanced at the girl, “Right… well, let’s head to my place for now.”
Ethan led her to his place; it was just a walking distance from the tall buildings looming before her eyes.
Ethan’s house was quite colorful with different plants in pots outside, with a huge windmill system and mini-dish in my roof- it was located by the far side of the MDWD.Ethan’s house seemed so out of place- it was colorful and cozy, whereas the rest of the buildings that surrounded it were all dull and gray. The girl laughed as she saw the place, and Ethan defensively tried to explain, “That’s- the dish thing is for my work.”“What work?”“I’m a pizza delivery guy.”The girl asked as she raised an eyebrow, “And what exactly do you do?”Ethan replied, “I deliver pizza all over the multiverse.”“That sounds cool,” she muttered softly.“Normally, as a courtesy, I’d ask you what do you do, but you probably don’t remember, so you have the second-highest privilege out of everything else in the multiverse.”&
With that, Ethan and Chronna set on a journey to a distant timeline, in the year 3042, to deliver pizza. As Ethan entered the coordinates to Cloud Atlas on their teleporter machine, Chronna asked, “By the way, Watt said that we’re irregulars, so isn’t it dangerous to mingle with other timeline characters like you, do?”Ethan scoffed, “Not really. You can pretty much build a family with someone else at some timeline, but the moment you leave that timeline, they will forget about you and everything you said or did to them. That’s how it is for irregulars.”“That’s kind of sad. Not being able to leave a mark.”“Well, you do leave a mark.” Ethan said, “To the people who love you, you will always leave a mark. Lost love will always still be love.”Ethan made final arrangements. He grabbed a pair of space specs and gave Chronna one. He explained, “Wear it, and it allows us
It was true what Ethan said. Time as it always was. It was an endless and eternal curiosity for everyone―even irregulars. It was a concept very familiar to most, but no one couldn’t really define or understand it. They were barely scratching the surface of what time really was. But for time guardians, time didn’t really exist; no, to be more precise, Time Guardians did not work like those from MDWD. For Time Guardians, time had existed, existed, and would exist all at once. So for a Time Guardian to have said that, was completely absurd and so that statement baffled Ethan while Chronna had a lot of questions running in her mind right then. The Time Guardian replied, “Yes, that is true, but right now, I…
Chronna was delighted, it was scary, but she was laughing. Ethan replied, “I thought about it too, but then again, I remembered, I’m a space pizza delivery guy. It’s my job to get this pizza across to my beloved customer, and that is the captain.” Chronna smirked, “Are you trying to show off to your junior?” “Why? Are you impressed?” Ethan asked with a raised brow and a playful smile. Chronna snorted and she replied while looking at him with a grin, “Maybe.” Ethan thought that she looked even more pretty when she was smiling wide. Since he was thinking that way, he did not realize that he was already staring at her dazedly. “What’s wrong? Why are you
“Buy time from what? What exactly is in this ship?” Ethan questioned further. Even though Chronna did not ask, the way she was looking at the Captain was as if he was a suspicious individual that was not trustworthy. The Captain was displeased. Nevertheless, he was not a bad person. He gulped hard before answering carefully, “The Salamander. It’s an alien species that ran amok inside the ship. I was on my way out of here when I heard the commotion. You see… I was actually supposed to step down as Captain today.” The Captain chuckled as it remarked further, “I guess life had other plans for me.” Ethan was surprised yet, at the same time, amazed by the Captain’s bravery and sense of duty. He saw cle
The Salamander used its sharp claws and lunged directly at Chronna, but Ethan acted quickly and blocked the attack using a wooden plank he found nearby. “That’s close!” Chronna blurted out while still being shocked as the Salamander’s nails were a couple of inches away from her face. Had it not been for Ethan, she would have already been dead. Ethan was also surprised. Thankfully his reflexes were faster than his worries. He asked, “Are you okay?” He was struggling too much, and the Salamander was trying to pin the two of them down to squash them with its force. Ethan was groaning in pain, he was already using all his strength, and he even used his flying shoes to help him lift it against the Salamander, but
Ethan calculated the time it would take for him to run to his backpack and leave Cloud Atlas. He would definitely make it. But just then, his thoughts were cut off as Chronna’s voice echoed through his entire being. Chronna shouted, “Don’t stop thinking of a way out for all of us! Even if you feel like your head is bursting, even if you feel like exploding! Don’t give up on us, Ethan! Think! Continue to think!” Ethan was dumbfounded. He saw Chronna’s eyes filled with trust. It wasn’t idle hope or fickleness that he saw in her eyes. Chronna wasn’t saying those things because she needed Ethan to save them or because Ethan was abandoning them. For some reason,
As the ship started to move towards the asteroid belt, Ethan pulled out the anchor, which kept them at bay, Ethan shouted, “Chronna, I’ll be taking the flying backpack now! Brace yourself. The pressure inside the asteroid belt is intense! No matter what, don’t let go of the steering wheel.” When Ethan remembered what Chronna told him earlier, he could not help but smile. He then remarked further, “Even if your hands felt like ripping apart, don’t let go!” Chronna chuckled before she nodded. She affirmed, “Got it!” Ethan then redirected his gaze back at Captain Smith, “Once we are inside the asteroid belt, the pressure would be enough to give us time, the Salamander won’t be able to adapt to intense pressure. Even our bodies as irregulars aren’t able to do
