Initium
"In Initium, the first lawless planet, we will learn to fend for ourselves. We will be able to go through the available Guild Source and begin to live the true experience that is Allsium. But beware, there are many dangers waiting out there....".
Manual of the good player. Allsium Systems: Initium.
“I'm very nervous," said Dagon, "It's the first time we've left virtual Earth.
“What a bunch of shits you are, ragazzi. “Greek was much more determined than the rest and liked to play the role of leader. We've been working hard, but we've finally got everything ready. Initium, here we come!
The four of us were in virtual London, at one of the many control panels from where worldwide flights could be purchased to any part of the virtual Earth and also to the systems of illegality.
There, in Piccadilly Circus, our great adventure would begin.
“Zen Oda, Dagon Basel, Gunner Kid and Greek Marion," Zen read aloud, "do you wish to travel to Initium and are you aware and knowledgeable that on Initium you will not be able to enjoy the security available to you on the Earth of Allsium?
“Yes, we are aware. “It didn't need to be said out loud, but Dagon experienced it as a historic moment.
“Your journey will begin in five seconds," the Japanese man continued. Make sure you are well equipped and do not die.
“What advice," Greek blurted out, "as if in five seconds we have a lot of time to....
We were invaded by darkness until moments later everything regained color and we appeared in a square on the planet Initium.
I was just talking about recovering the color, because everything there was gray.
Initium was the place of passage for all users leaving the virtual Earth, but also a lawless place in some areas. We were in serious danger of being robbed or killed, although we had no valuables on us; no one could know that, at least not until we were killed and looted.
“We should take a walk, ragazzi," said Greek. This doesn't smell good. Let's go to the hotel in town and look for the damn Guild Fountain.
Greek wasn't messing around. Instead of inspecting the place for any items that might help us defend ourselves, he preferred to head for the hotel and have one of us go through the Guild Fountain.
The Source of Guild granted the power of a path, which would deploy a tree of skills that would grant supernatural powers to the subject who decided to enter it. In turn, they would also improve abilities such as strength or agility, always depending on the user's choice.
“Don't you think it's too quiet in here? “Zen was a typical person who thought too much of everything. He thought there were conspiracies against anything he was involved in.
But he got it right.
“Don't move, rookies! “a voice shouted.
The four of us were petrified and horrified.
We looked around until eight hooded people appeared and pointed simple but menacing bows at us. Rather better weapons, by the way, than a screwdriver, a hammer with a split handle and a rusty wrench. That was all we carried.
“Shit, guys," Greek cursed, tensing his jaw. It's an ambush.
“I won't say I told you so, but I told you so. “Zen would stick out his chest even on the most unsuspected occasions.
“Keep calm, we have nothing of value," I said between my teeth. We will give you whatever you ask, we have no choice.
Dying in Allsium meant never being able to return to the virtual world again and living in real life forever, so we had better be a little careful.
Zen and Greek nodded, both knowing it was for the best. Dagon tried, but he was shaking too much to move his head. From the puddle under his feet we could tell he had peed himself.
A true adventurer.
“What do we have here? “said the leader of the group, a blond with a haughty look that radiated contempt. None of his companions could see his face, they were hooded and dressed in dark gray, like supermarket ninjas. “Throw all your belongings on the floor and unblock them.
Unlocking was the same as letting anyone take our belongings. When someone got hold of an item, it was immediately transferred to the personal inventory and could not leave unless approval was given to unlock it. It was easier to do this than to explain it, since everything in Allsium worked just by thinking about it. It was as easy as breathing.
“Do as he tells you," I recommended sensibly.
“You think you're cocky, don't you? “Greek snapped at the blond with an angry look on his face as he threw his backpack to the ground.
The Italian was the thoughtless one of the group, he came in last and almost by miracle. Sometimes we didn't like his ways, but he was the most determined member of the team, the one who used to do what the others didn't want to do. And that, in a way, suited us.
“Well, here we have the pimp on duty. “The leader shrugged his shoulders and laughed. You've only just arrived at Initium and you've already put yourselves in danger. What kind of fucking rookies are you? “He didn't leave time for us to answer. Some come well”prepared and some think they're going on a field trip. In any case, you're all rookies and you're all on the losing side, so emptying your packs is a good deal for us. Unless, of course, you have no attachment to life. What do you think?
“It's a good deal," Zen replied almost immediately, stuttering a little. It was annoying to get off to such a bad start, but there was no other way out. Dagon tried to nod, but kept his head down and didn't move. The circle of urine under his feet was increasing.
“How long have you been here? “asked Greek.
“Enough to know you're amateurs, you idiot.
He was a petulant and obnoxious kid, maybe the same age as us, with well”groomed blond hair. The color of his eyes was peculiar, an unnatural violet, not a cheap virtual expense. That kid had been hanging around for a few months away from the safety of virtual Earth and seemed to have made a killing on petty heists like that one.
“You ain't got nothing but a lousy bow, asshole," Greek replied. You don't even carry a gun, who are the rookies now?
Before anyone could do anything, not even raise an eyebrow, Greek made a pistol appear in his right hand and fired. The leader dropped like a sack of potatoes when the bullet hit between his eyebrows and the rest of the group scattered, but one more was hit when Greek fired the Beretta again.
Dagon finished pissing his pants and threw his ass on the floor while Zen and I watched in amazement as Greek ended the virtuality of two users. Lives that were extinguished from Allsium, a system they would never access again. It was the payment for being free and not staying in the safety of the virtual Earth.
From now on they would be forced to live forever in reality.I had never seen two people shot to death before and it was hard to react, even though they were virtual lives. So much for their adventure; there would be no more virtual shopping for them, nor many of the huge facilities that Allsium provided.By now they would have been in their respective homes cursing the wretched Italian who had stitched them up with bullets and returned them to their dark existence. Although that didn't save the fact that both Zen and I were very surprised to see that Greek had kept an ace up his sleeve in the form of a Beretta.“What are you fools standing there like passive stares? “said Greek as he approached the leader to strip him of all his belongings. Search the other one before they come back with more people. Come on, dammit! “He let out a big laugh. This idiot had a hotel room of his own on him. We've won the lottery, ragazzi!I didn't even know how to respond to that. It was great news, of
It was a planet devoid of color, except for our novice clothes, something that announced us as easy prey and that we had to solve sooner rather than later. There was no green, no red, much less blue, but there was grayish green, grayish red and grayish blue.It seemed like London on any given day.Initium was the world of the beginning, a planet where freedom and illegality went hand in hand to steal and kill without anyone lifting a finger to protect you. It was the law of the strongest, so when Greek pulled out the Beretta, I knew that without him we would not have lasted more than ten minutes of adventure.Although that didn't mean forgiveness, as we still had a group conversation pending for having withheld such important information from us.Initium was similar to Earth, although without seas and instead lakes of great capacity. The best place to take shelter at that time was in the outskirts of the capital, since rushing to get to the hotel room after killing the leader of that
“We should think about how to get to the city without putting ourselves in danger," said Zen. The Guild Fountain comes next. The first step is to get to our hotel room, so we can return to virtual Earth whenever we want, in case we need to buy something or disconnect from this gray world.“The samurai is right," Greek agreed. It is a priority to get to the hotel and get into our room. Then we'll have time to prepare for the initiation of the path. By the way, have you decided what to do?“There are many paths to choose from," I said. Too many to be clear. I think one of us would have to choose the Path of Frost, to give us protection.“And why not the Path of the Flame? “asked Greek.“You should know, my dear spaghetti," Zen nodded, "that the Path of Frost is as offensive as it is defensive. Something the Path of Flame can also do, but with less defensive power. You can raise a wall of fire, but no one will be able to cross a wall of ice.“Unless he has a lot of extra strength and kno
“It's for the best. Gunner and I make a good team, remember the simulations. As long as Dagon doesn't have a path, he'll have to stay out of the way. As for you," he referred to Zen, "you can start thinking about a good strategy, Capito?“Well, I've already thought of it.“Had you already thought of sending the two of us? “I asked somewhat annoyed.“Erm... yes. “He nodded sheepishly, "If Greek has come to that conclusion, and he's not the smart one in the group, it would make me look bad if I hadn't thought of it first, wouldn't it?“That's also true," Greek said. The truth is that there was no one who could understand them.“We're all ears," I said, raising an eyebrow.“Well, knowing that Greek has a decent gun and that you could go with a pitiful bow..." He cleared his throat. Anyway, you don't have much of a chance in direct combat, even against the six that got away. Besides, I'm sure there won't be only six.“So much for saying we should be stealthy, sushi face? “added Greek.“I
“You're not going to run away, are you? “Greek was one of those who always went forward, I guessed that's why he had the whole Italian mafia chasing him in real life.“We have come to Allsium to be brave and transfer our powers to real life when the time is right," he explained. Whatever happens, I will not run away, not without first accomplishing my goals, but I will not hold it against you if you go back to Zen and Dagon to save your own skin, Vinci.“I won't run away either. “I wasn't sure, but after what Greek had said at that moment, I felt that running away would be postponing the inevitable. They were going to pursue us to the end, and if they did, we would get Dagon and Zen in trouble as well. We had to put an end to this matter as soon as possible. I'll see you later, Greek. Be careful, okay?We took a deep breath and Greek separated, walking in the direction of the stalls. I was alone and I had the Beretta in my personal inventory, so I moved forward determined, with one ey
I was only five meters away from the henchman and I immediately noticed that he was bigger and stronger than the one I had knocked unconscious just a few minutes before. I thought it wasn't going to be easy, especially when my foot decided to trip over the step at the entrance of a block of apartments and, of course, echoed throughout the place. That broad”backed beast turned around.“Come on, let's go, we are close. “And he went back to walking as if nothing had happened.I was lucky he couldn't see my face, because I had gone white.I had no choice but to stand next to him, just a studied step behind, and accompany him for a while.“Attention, Gunner”san," said Zen in his ear. They're taking him to a cave near where you are. I don't know how many of them there are, but you have to get rid of them before they get there. You've already seen the closet you're carrying next to you, so don't be an idiot and load it as soon as possible.“Does Greek know what he's doing? “I asked between m
It was funny how quickly your eyes got used to the ash gray of Initium. Our gaze was now lost in the immensity of the colors of a room whose floor, pure white, blinded us from how shiny it was. The furniture was gilt and the crystal chandeliers that hung from the ceiling sparkled with splendor. It could be said that that room exuded good taste and had a certain baroque air, to the Palace of Versailles. A place that I was able to visit in the virtual Earth of Allsium thanks to the instantaneous and cheapness of the trip. In reality it would have been impossible to do so."Damn, what a hurt!" Greek yelled. It was the only thing I could understand of all that he was saying out loud in Italian.Zen was treating him with normal medicine. There was no way I was going to spend the four priests that the system had given us when we became illegal. A single one of them would have immediately healed Greek's wound, but he himself was not going to waste it. Let alone being in our hotel room, as in
Two seconds later, Dagon arrived at the hotel room, our home in Initium.“Wow! He let out giving loud applause. We wouldn't have bought this in a million years. It's fantastic, I tell you. Oysters, Greek, what happened to you?Good old Dagon was happiness personified. She hadn't even noticed that Greek was still growling as Zen finished bandaging his leg.“We have many things to tell you, ragazzone. How has the gig go?“Well, things are loose, you know, but we're doing it.He had brought in more legal money than anyone with the sweat of his brow, something to be admired. Also, whenever he could he spent the rest of the hours connected to Allsium with us. We couldn't ask for more, it was his way of life.Zen told him everything, he was so Japanese that his mind had the perfect chronological order of what had happened. He remembered details that Greek and I had already forgotten and, of course, he was left as the brilliant mind that led us to end up buying the hotel, thus proving that G
“Are you ready? asked Patrick Cork, stroking his beard."Yes," I replied. I had been waiting for this day for a long time.I was nervous, it was the day of the worldwide launch of Allsium.Millions of people queued at AfroCrop headquarters to have the chip implanted that gave them access to the system.Allsium would go on the market with two game modes. The first was the one I had experienced five years before: stories lasting a maximum of ten days, that is, a year and a half in Allsium. They were adventures of an individual type, everything was created by the experience, fears and dreams of the participating subject. The second dealt with massive virtual reality. Worlds that AfroCorp had created so that all the players in the world could go on adventures and interact with each other. It was something like the evolution of massive online role”playing games, a game mode that would take entertainment to a new level never seen before. Players could experiment, as I had done in Allsium in
It was curious to see how the leaves of the few trees that were left standing in that immense garden were stopped in the sky. The wind wasn't blowing, Gina didn't move a hair, and the black dot that the Leproiners' helicopter had become was still on the horizon. I walked around the place trying to figure out what had happened, wondering if it was the power of a path. What I didn't know was why only I could move."You have pronounced the magic words," I heard a deep voice full of wisdom. I couldn't explain it, but it was like that.I looked around, but I couldn't find the owner of the voice. I drifted away for a bit, but it wasn't long before I was back with Gina.I was astonished to see that there were two people next to her.“Who are you? They were an old man and a young girl who looked very much like Gina. I was blank and not knowing what to say."Wow, we do look alike, yes. “His voice and hair were the same, but the way he gestured and his firmness were not so similar. She wasn't a
I woke up suddenly to the feeling that thousands of ants were crawling across my face. It was Choco with his beak, he drilled me gently to see if I would come to my senses at once.“Shock… what happened? As golden and legendary as it was, the chocobo did not speak. All he let out was a grunt of pain that felt like my own.He had been shot and was on the ground trying to get up without success. He was exhausted, his last strength had been invested in saving my skin. Before he suffered any more, I thanked him and made him disappear. He did not feel the rest of the summons; no sign of Kody, Harpy, Fuego, nor of course Rexie.Losing consciousness was reason enough for the summons to dematerialize. I didn't understand Choco, but I had seen before that the golden chocobo seemed not to be subject to conventional rules."Have you come to yourself yet?" said a voice he hadn't expected.I tried to get up, but I only managed to sit down and had to hold on with my hands to keep from tipping over.
We had been fighting for about ten minutes and neither of us could finish the fight. Punches and kicks collided, dispelling waves of ice, fire, air, and electricity emanating from our pathing abilities. No wonder he was the champion of the battle arena, but given more time I would have been able to reach him in the Novingrad Coliseum. He had never fought anyone so evenly before. My ethereal, fire, thunder, or ice abilities were of little or no use against the power of his blows, which were also elemental charge. We both managed to freeze areas of our rival's body, burn others and shake discharges that left us at the mercy of the other; that when we did not use the power of the wind and we crashed against the walls of that viewpoint that began to be a shadow of what it had been."Looks like martial arts won't end this fight," Jackie Leproiner announced, a few bruises and blood on her face. You were in a hurry, right?"I don't think they'd mind waiting a bit," I replied, wiping the bloo
Chocobo Stampede ability increased his physical strength, speed, and power, as well as making him able to go through anything in his path. Needless to say, the barriers were going to be formidable challenges to his skill. We were going to check it out right away."Kuee!" He yelled when he saw me.The golden aura of his armor and plumage blinded me. Choco had also changed; he was slimmer and even more golden, if that was possible. Its feathers had grown much longer, its crest looked modern, and its beak was fearsome.Riding on it I felt capable of anything."Choco, we're surrounded by invisible barriers, see if you can break them," I suggested. Two steps back and the chocobo stampede began. He didn't know how, but Choco detected the barriers and gave them a peck, not too hard but very dry. He went on from here to there, going around and doing the same thing over and over again; we seemed to be in an invisible maze. I was going to ask him what the hell he was doing, but just as I wanted
I woke up in a dark place of no more than three square meters. A conditioned cell, shackles on the hands and feet and unbearable heat.Five days had passed since we arrived at Gardiners Island in virtuality, more than enough time for our bodies to have traveled from the old continent to New York in reality.“Anyone there? I yelled. The voice was lost in the echo of some facilities that seemed enormous."I'm here Vinci!" Greek replied. It seemed to be in the next cell. Where the hell are we?“Dagon! Are you here? “I asked for. There was no answer."Shit, Vinci, we have to get out of here now!" Greek yelled. I have my hands and feet tied, I can't materialize anything.I discovered that virtuality could no longer be accessed, it was as if that part of my brain had been torn out. The automatism that allowed anyone to enter Allsium had been switched off.Virtuality had passed into history and the New World had arrived. But somehow, I felt powerful.I took a deep breath and thought. In a te
Dagon took hours to recover and be able to walk. The fight against Ryan Leproiner had exhausted him and his healing abilities were slow to heal the severity of his injuries. Dark magic was like poison, eating away at everything in its path, especially wounds. Dagon might have lost his virtuality had he not been a holy paladin, as the damage from the dark was still taking its toll on him. Proof of this was that he could barely stand up.Gina's orders were very specific: we were to travel to New York to meet her at Gardiners Island, a private property that, apparently, was virtually Kurayami's base of operations for the American country. It was far from the big city, so it was perfect to wait for the arrival of the New World. We bought three tickets to New York. In a matter of blinks we reached New London, in the state of Connecticut. From there we had to travel by helicopter to Gardiners Island, where they were already waiting for us. I preferred to travel on Harpy's back, and since Da
London from Harpy's back looked dirtier and darker than ever. Its buildings were empty and any glimpse of art, which was not in short supply in the city, lay in ruins. An insult to history that the system could patch up over time if the New World didn't put an end to Allsium sooner. Security had fallen and, although I knew it was virtual, it hurt a lot to see how your hometown ended up demolished because of the same thing that had destroyed it in reality: human greed."There's something going on down there," Greek announced, looking up at Westminster Bridge.I took a look and ordered Harpy to come down. There was Ryan Leproiner, swelled with pride as he spoke to the masses and railed against the Kurayami rebels. However, as the Italian had pointed out, something seemed to be wrong.Dagon's limp body shimmered and broke into a shaft of light that shot up into the sky. The silence that had invaded us was broken by Harpy's high”pitched squawk.Instead of moving away from the bridge, the
"Any specific strategy?" He started asking someone who was next to me."Leave Ryan Leproiner to us," Greek replied. It's the only thing you should know, capito ?“That? He said strangely while looking at us from top to bottom, like most of those who marched next to us. And who are you?"The leader's shields," I answered with a smile on my face. There was a deathly silence, broken only by the screams of the Allsionista, who had about fifty meters to go to meet us."Are you the fucking shields?" But weren't there four? Where the hell is the leader? “were some of the questions that were heard from the different voices that were raised in the crowd, all of them with the same tone of disbelief. There was no time to answer them, but at least they had believed it. I supposed that no one in Kurayami would dare to proclaim themselves the leader's shield, especially in a situation as complicated as that one. It was funny that everyone still thought there were four, especially when that fourth s
