An Author's Struggle - What Lies Ahead Ch 57 - Final Showdown
As early as 5 AM, Murphy departed his hotel in the darkness of night. The court session was due at 10:00, so he had ample time to attend even if he left at 9:30, but there was one obstacle he had to get rid of beforehand.Dressed like a common jogger, Murphy bypassed a small park and entered a residential building. He lowered his face behind a hoodie, ensuring none of the cameras could get a clear angle of him as he slipped through. Inserting the code he received in advance, he ascended up the elevator, all the way to the roof. There, a cache laid hidden in a janitor’s room, who conveniently called in sick for the day. Retrieving the hidden key, Murphy went in and changed his clothes, then lounged on a bucket and waited for his prey to arrive. By now, his plan should be perfect. As expected, at roughly 7 AM, three homely girls arrived in a taxi. The man at the gates readily let them into the complex, and even offered to help with the luggage. They naturally denied his aid, seeing a
An Author's Struggle - What Lies Ahead Ch 58 - Court in Session
The torture didn’t last as long as Murphy imagined it would. At some point, he found himself repulsed by her screams. Her begging and hoarse pleas did nothing to alleviate his anger, so he silenced them.He thought he would force her to endure a thousand days of hell, but he was not cut out for this cruelty in the end. ‘Forget it,’ he sighed, dispelling the dream. Back in the real world, he woke up and gave the woman a look. She regained her consciousness too, but it was clear from her frothing mouth that she wasn’t long for the world. The brief hours she spent in that hell had surely ruined her mind, because her stare was blank, gaze empty. There was no more pleading to be seen in those spiteful eyes, only a desire for death, just as he promised.Murphy wouldn’t oblige, and merely stepped over her body and descended the ladder, leaving her out in the sun, knowing she had never felt colder. Only death would accompany her now. With the spotter falling to her death, he was sure the po

Were it still last week, they could have shut down the motion to present new evidence. Now, however, they had to deal with it entirely unprepared.By the time the QiE-Novel lawyer thought to protest, Murphy was already done spreading copies to the panel of arbitrators. Even the media received electronic copies of the same document, written in both Mandarin and English. It was too late to silence him, and he gracefully explained the novelist’s plight. Making use of the spotlight, he made sure everyone knew just how draconian the company was. Clause by clause, he broke down their practices that were borderline illegal everywhere else in the world. It wasn’t hard, either. After all, everything was in the contract.“In conclusion, QiE-Novel works on a set of predatory rules. They offer zero transparency on how they spend collected money, the costs of which are shared by the plaintiff. As of this moment, QiE-Novel can liberally spend 10,000 ED and claim it’s for promotion, and the author
An Author's Struggle - What Lies Ahead Ch 60 - Welcome Home
Having met one of Dracula’s Brides, Murphy was no stranger to beautiful women. Even so, he could subjectively say this one was in a class of her own. Had his heart not belonged to Ellie, he would no doubt be entranced by this vixen.“I take it you are the peace offering?” “Pardon?” she blanked, taking her a while to respond to his directness. Recovering with a smile and a fake blush, the woman nodded and tried to get back on track, “You have keen eyes, Mr. Murphy.”“Keener than you lot know.” Squinting his eyes, he bored his eyes into her and she could almost feel his heated gaze on her skin. It wasn’t the lustful type she was used to, however, but one of palpable hatred for her very existence. “I’m just the messenger,” she rushed to put a slender briefcase on the table, sweating nervously as she did, “I’m only here to make—““Is it worth it?” Murphy interrupted, “Are you satisfied with being their sacrificial dove?”“I just do as I’m paid,” she shied away from his gaze, “I can lea
An Author's Struggle - What Lies Ahead Ch 61 - Wedding
That same night, Eleanor and Murphy drove to exchange their marital vows. Their wedding was neither acclaimed by the state nor by any church. Instead, they were wed under watchful eye of the dragon who wove their fates together. On that tall bridge, where once upon a time he recited his woes to the moon, now he shared his joy. ‘Look, moon! Awaken, dragon!’ he rejoiced in his mind, never to this day quite sure if the dragon existed to begin with, ‘I’m getting married, and I am happy. I have not squandered the second chance you gave me.’ “Surely you’re not thinking of jumping off again?” Ellie laughed, tearing his attention away from the abyss below them. “No,” he shook his head in denial and smiled, “I was just thinking how surreal life is. I went through the pit of despair, but I find myself only grateful, because it let me get to know you.” “The time of sacrifices has come to an end,” she said hopefully, taking his hands in her own. Then, they ignored the moon above and the dra

The pilot woke them as the helicopter reached the Black Sea and was ready to touch down. It was still the twilight hours, but the bright lights below allowed them to easily get their bearing. “Is that what I think it is?” Ellie stifled a yawn, her grogginess gone the moment she set her eyes on the landing pad. “Wouldn’t feel right to take your hand without an appropriate dowry,” Murphy grinned, pecking her on the cheek, “It’s my duty to make your dreams come true.”Below them, a massive yacht floated silently on its own. The ship’s name shone radiantly even in the dark, reading “Elend” after its rightful owner. On the rear deck, a few people welcomed their arrival on the helipad.“Congratulations,” they spoke in trained unison, before the head butler reported, “We’ve made all the arrangements and will depart now. Enjoy your weekend.”Then, they boarded the helicopter and left. When the rotors faded away, Murphy and Eleanor found themselves alone on the boat.“Do you know how to sail
An Author's Struggle - What Lies Ahead Ch 63 - Mule
After an amazing first wedding night, Murphy and Eleanor cruised around the Black Sea by their lonesome on the Elend yacht. From dusk to dawn, they were inseparable and seldom left each other’s embrace. Be it in flesh or spirit, they were one. What should have been the debut of their long honeymoon however, was cut short when Murphy once more caught the irregularity in her dreams.“There’s something really peculiar in your memories,” Murphy brought up the topic unsurely, not certain if he should pry to begin with.“Peculiar? In what way?”Taking control of the dream, he brought her just before the anomaly, a place deep within her consciousness. In his eyes, psychic energy sealed the area off like a mirror, and even he couldn’t see through it.“This! I reckon it’s a sealed portion of your memories. Perhaps a traumatic experience or something.”“I don’t see anything,” she mused, waving her arm towards the anomaly without detecting anything. “I think I can undo the seal without damaging

When the last fragment of the memories elapsed, things became pretty clear and the puzzle was finally complete. By the time she was done recovering from surgery, Eleanor had turned into a docile puppet. The teenager seemed to have awakened some sort of hypnosis or mind control power. There was nothing else Murphy could think of that was as powerful. Eleanor’s memories were simply surreal. By the second visit, her straps were removed, yet she still made no attempt to escape or seek help. She heeded his every word, and each time the commands became more irresistible. On the third visit, she was allowed to leave and return home to Romania, where she would blow herself up for their cause. She was aware, and she was happy to do it. Nothing, be it her senses or rationality, neither tingled nor raised a red flag. Her memories were clear, and she did complete her mission. On the day of the beta launch, she made it past security and into the surgery machine. She then uttered the trigger tha

Ch 73 - Epilogue
- — ✎ — - The five year anniversary of Murphy’s vow was finally upon him, but he had long since completed his promise. No later than a year after the final battle, he successfully unsealed his seventh gate. That came largely as a result of his success in that battle, and the fruits he claimed in its aftermath. Specifically, he salvaged Erebus’ consciousness. Once it was in his dream realm, he had all the time he needed to crack it. Other than being the de facto leader of Physis Nomos, the old man had dipped his toes in all kinds of criminal enterprises over the years. His psychic powers made him the perfect assassin. Lethal, traceless, silent. By reliving through his memories, Murphy salvaged hundreds of interesting connections, and tasked the Chainbreakers to follow up and unearth those leads. The cases they unveiled had all but quaked the world. From businessmen in Asia, to politicians in the deep state of the US, people from all over the world were incriminated. Proof w
Ch 72 - Final Battle
Murphy had no time to curse as the earth dragged him back to its hard embrace. He was strangely familiar with this sensation, and knew exactly what the outcome of such a fall was. Alas, now was not the time to reminisce about his jump from the bridge…Erebus and his goons expected him to splatter across the ground, and even took steps to avoid the impact area. Yet, they were in for a surprise of their own, because despite appearing panicked and flailing his arms like a desperate duck, Murphy was anything but. When he was merely a second from impact, Murphy suddenly spread his psyche and willed himself to slow down.A sudden force shrouded the area, allowing Murphy to veer directly towards the bodyguards accompanying Erebus. Before those two could react, and too busy managing the hostages, Murphy made landfall next to them. His fists coated in fire struck the first one in the chest, eviscerating organs and bone alike. The other panicked, hand reaching for his gun, yet a mere glance ha
Ch 71 - Erebus
Murphy paid no heed to the retinal text, and was far more preoccupied with Eleanor falling. His stretched out hand clasped, guiding his intent and will from afar. His psyche took form, his psychokinesis pushed to its next step, and she was suspended mid-air! He had achieved similar things with immaterial objects like a pen, but never a human.Luckily, her psyche was sapped by the curse and couldn’t resist. This allowed him to control her easily, or he would have been doomed to fail. She flew in the air, eyes squinted in horror once she realized what might befall her. The sensation of flying around eventually stopped, and she tentatively opened her eyes once she felt Murphy’s arms wind tightly around her.Murphy hugged her, bottling up a dozen curses and reproaches that could only wait for later. He was angry, but he was terrified even more.“Y-you’re crazy—” he bit his lips, leaving the rest of the accusation unsaid. “I’m sorry,” she offered plainly, before bursting into tears of her
Ch 70 - Sixth Gate
When Murphy snuck back on the ship, he was surprised to see Eleanor awake. Hands on her waist, she waited by the docking area and made sure he saw her pout.“Not even halfway through our honeymoon, and you’re already tired of me?” she joked and huffed, “I didn’t expect you to find someone else so quickly…”“Guilty as charged,” he grinned in response, “I figured since I scored the most beautiful woman on the planet, I might be lucky enough with the second…”“Compliments won’t get you out of this one, darling.” Ellie turned serious, “What were you up to?”“Kind of a long story… I didn’t want to sour our happiness, but it seems there’s no rest for the wicked.”“Sure, I’ll make some coffee. Tell me all about it.”“Tea for me,” he interjected as he reattached the boat to the yacht and trailed along to the lounge.A few minutes later, Eleanor sat in her rightful place, serving him tea while she drank coffee on his lap. They indulged the warm drinks in silence, but eventually Murphy gathere
Ch 69 - System Embryo
Murphy tried to focus on Erebus, but his visions didn’t become any clearer. He could not see past the darkness, try as he might to muster his power.Eventually, the revelations shattered as a whole, his psychic reserves almost exhausted. He could only cut his losses and sigh in regret.‘I was this close!’ Murphy struck the edge of his marble throne, shattering the armrest to pieces. It was only then that he was reminded it was a mere dream, and a terrified child was staring at him in fear.“Fear not, Asen,” he tried to comfort, but the fire in his eyes didn’t make him sound very convincing. It was only when the boy outright started crying that Murphy realized his folly and doused the inner flame, regaining a more calm demeanor. “I’m sorry,” he lifted the boy off the ground, and brought him someplace nicer in that same instant, “Don’t cry any longer… I won’t hurt you. I promise.”“I know,” the sniveling boy replied amidst tears, “That’s… not… why I’m crying…”“Then?”“I just… don’t wa
Ch 68 - Horrid Revelations
“What is this? Why can’t I see their faces?” the boy asked, clutching at the hem of Morpheus’ robe. “You don’t seem them because they don’t exist, not in this reality. Now watch, young Asen.”A scene played out before them like a three dimensional movie, and the two of them relived the hospital encounter. A teenager walked in, his face redacted and replaced by a simplified smug emoji. Their words were clear, however, as was the part where he mind controlled Eleanor to explode in a crowd. He shuffled backwards afterwards, depicting the woman strapped to a chair while a family of three watched.“Why are you showing me these evil people?” Asen questioned, his adorable young mind clearly perceiving things in black and white.“So you don’t become like them.”“I would never!” the boy denied vehemently, “My mother says bad people can’t go to heaven.”“What if there was no hell, young Asen?” Murphy questioned rhetorically, “If there was no heaven to yearn for, and no judgement in an afterli
Ch 67 - Asen
Murphy grabbed the phone and looked closely at the picture, his frown deepening. That boy was the same psychic who mind controlled Eleanor in the future, but right now he was merely a prepubescent pup. “How old is he now?” Murphy asked, his voice showing some conflict as he indicated the photo. “He’s only 13!” the nurse replied and fell to the ground as well, clinging to life with her whole being, “Please, our son is still young… We’ll stop doing this… Just—““Silence!” Murphy boomed, sending a telekinetic blast that flipped the woman over and sent her careening against the wall. The doctor winced, but didn’t dare move to help his wife. They just stared at the ground and hoped someone would come save them. As for the monster, he continued to stare at the picture, flames dancing in his eyes.‘Should I kill him now?’ he asked himself repeatedly, unsure how to proceed. On one hand, he burned with righteous indignation, having been blinded and robbed of his life. Ellie had it even wors
Ch 66 - Dilemma
A black SUV stopped at the side of a small family clinic in Burgas. The city CCTVs monitoring the streets tracked the vehicle all the way from the suburbs. A single driver got out, opened the trunk and retrieved a duffel bag, then walked to the rear doors of the clinic. The surveillance cut off at that point, a sudden glitch in the system causing the camera to malfunction and stop recording. By the time it was turned back on, the vehicle was long gone. Coincidentally, it had been reported as stolen that same night.Murphy blinked, dismissing the latest retinal message from the system, then waltzed in towards the emergency doors. His hand pushed against the lock, searing the metal and turning it into a worthless puddle that gave in to his push. The building plans appeared in his right eye like a 3D map, and he conveniently followed them down the stairs. The clinic was small, and only saw high-end clients, so its security was top of the art. Cameras lingered at just about every othe
