Chapter 8: Agree To Divorce...

Initially, saving someone's life shouldn't come with the expectation of gratitude. However, after witnessing the man's swift change of demeanor, faster than the flip of a hand, Ethan couldn't help but feel uneasy.

Of course, he didn't save Tazanna for money or any favor from this man. At the very least, the man should have shown some sincerity and offered thanks for saving his daughter. Instead, how he treated Ethan differed significantly from how he had just treated the hospital doctor.

Nonetheless, Ethan didn't harbor any ill intentions, so he ignored Wynstan's threatening words and responded indifferently: "I just happened to come across your daughter on the street. If you think I saved her for some ulterior motive, let me be frank – not everyone in this world is as wicked as you imagine. While I may be poor in wealth, I'm not poor in morals like you. Excuse me, and I have to go now."

After saying this, Ethan resolutely turned and left, disregarding Wynstan's furious gaze.

At this point, the bodyguards also gathered around, seemingly intending to prevent Ethan from leaving. However, Wynstan suddenly burst into loud laughter, walked up to Ethan, and patted him on the shoulder, smiling: "I hope your words are true! But if I find out this matter has anything to do with you, rest assured, I will not let anyone who harms my daughter have a happy ending!"

Hearing Wynstan's chilling voice behind him, Ethan's steps were firm and decisive as he left without hesitation. As Ethan's figure disappeared down the hospital corridor, Wynstan quietly instructed his bodyguard: "Investigate this person's background for me. Tell me everything about his past and origins, and report it!"

"Yes, boss!"

Ethan had no idea that his random act of kindness in saving Tazanna would inadvertently pull him into unnecessary trouble. Ultimately, it led to unexpected events that made him shake his head and laugh bitterly every time he recalled them. But those stories are for another time. At that moment, Ethan's mood was extremely gloomy.

He never thought the Smith father and daughter would have such similar personalities. Not only did they not know how to show gratitude, but they also made Ethan feel like he was the one in debt after helping them. It was genuinely frustrating and unbearable.

Ring... Ring...

Before the sky could brighten, Ethan's bedside table phone rang, startling him awake. The previous day's events, from Melanie's incident to Tazanna's, kept him awake all night. He had only managed to get a little over three hours of sleep.

Seeing Melanie's number on the screen, Ethan's eyebrows furrowed, forming a vertical line: "What do you need?" he asked, his voice cold due to the previous day's events.

However, before he could finish speaking, his wife's sobbing came from the other side.

"Ethan, please come to the hospital immediately, my father... my father... he's on the verge of dying! The doctor said his condition suddenly worsened, and he might not make it through today, sob..."

Hearing Melanie's heart-wrenching cries, Ethan's heart softened. Temporarily putting aside his past grievances, he hurriedly dressed and rushed to the hospital.

But when he entered Melanie's father's hospital room, seeing her sobbing with her head buried in Toshan's chest, Ethan's face turned pale.

After struggling to suppress his emotions, Ethan slowly approached and softly asked: "Melanie, what happened to your father?"

Hearing Ethan's footsteps, Melanie panicked and pulled away from Toshan's chest. Her face flushed with embarrassment, she stuttered an explanation: "Y-you... you mustn't misunderstand... I-"

But her explanation was cut short as she noticed Ethan's cold, emotionless gaze. Her voice choked up.

At that moment, Mabel walked in and, upon seeing Ethan, became furious and scolded him: "You damned jerk, what are you doing here? My husband wouldn't be in this mess if it weren't for you! You cursed brat, get out of here!"

Like an enraged shrew, Mabel grabbed Ethan's arm and scratched it, driving him out of Melanie's room.

Toshan watched the whole scene with great satisfaction. He had heard Ethan's footsteps earlier but deliberately allowed Melanie to lean against his chest so that Ethan would see them.

Seeing Ethan being chased away by his mother-in-law made Toshan feel even more content.

"Aunt Mabel, please don't do this. After all, he's your son-in-law. Doing this will make Melanie very uncomfortable!" Toshan maintained a polite demeanor on the surface, trying to persuade Mabel.

However, his face bore some traces of the fight from the previous day, which made him look somewhat grotesque.

Of course, Melanie had heard about the fight. Mabel exaggerated the story, claiming Ethan was unreasonable and provoked Toshan, making Melanie extremely angry.

Now, seeing Ethan in this state, she wanted to speak up to stop the situation. But to her surprise, Ethan just gave a faint smile, pushed his mother-in-law aside, and looked straight at Toshan with a mocking expression.

"So, you still haven't had enough after being beaten by me yesterday? You're not welcome here either, so get out of my sight!"

"Ha ha ha!"

Far from being angered by Ethan's words, Toshan laughed heartily. Meanwhile, Mabel was on the verge of exploding, pointing at Ethan and yelling.

"Who are you telling to get lost? You're the one who should get lost, you hear me?"

In front of everyone's astonished gazes, Ethan ignored the furious expression on his mother-in-law's face and walked straight to his wife, his eyes filled with mixed emotions.

"Rest assured, I came here first to see how my father-in-law is doing. After that, I will divorce Melanie. From now on, none of you will have to see this useless son-in-law again!"

Ethan took a handwritten paper from his pocket, which contained the contents of the divorce papers, and handed it to Melanie.

"As per your mother's request, here are the divorce papers. From now on, you're free to marry whomever you want. But I hope you'll make the right choice and live a happy life!"

Holding the divorce papers in Melanie's hand, Ethan forced a smile on his face before turning around to leave hastily. However, at that moment, Melanie suddenly shouted after a moment of shock: "Where do you think you're going? Stand right there for me!"

But Ethan's footsteps were unyielding. He wanted to leave this place that shattered his heart. Yet, who could have known that Mabel's voice would scream in horror at this moment?

"Melanie, what are you doing? Put the knife down!"

Ethan was startled by his mother-in-law's scream and quickly turned around to see Melanie holding a fruit knife to her throat, staring straight at him.

"If you dare to take another step out of here, I will die before you!"

"Melanie, what are you doing? Drop the knife!"

Even Toshan was terrified and rushed to stop Melanie's actions. But who could have known that she would suddenly shout at him?

"This has nothing to do with you! Get out!"

Taken aback by Melanie's outburst, Toshan was left speechless. At this point, Mabel hurriedly tried to persuade her daughter.

"Melanie, what are you trying to do? Don't be foolish! What's so good about him? If he wants a divorce, let him have it. Why do you still care about him?"
