The Director felt the change in his surroundings immediately. He was alone in his office, and then, suddenly, he wasn't. He couldn't see anyone, but he had trained to react from even subconscious information.

Almost casually, he ducked his head down and then dove across his desk. He hit the ground on a shoulder, twisted, and drew his gun so he landed facing his assailant.

"What the hell?" he said out loud, seeing no one in the room. 'Am I just being paranoid after the Quantum readings these past weeks?' He stood up and holstered his gun, glad that none of his subordinates had seen his anxious display.

The blade hit his forearm, his instinctive move stopping the sword from slicing through his neck. He was already spinning along the outside of the sword arc, towards the attacker, his blocking arm now up and leading the rotation. Taking full advantage of his momentum, he delivered a spinning elbow strike to their temple.

The crunch was audible as the elbow connected with the snarling,

"Can you believe my parents want me to focus on exams right now?" Lily said, glancing up at Dan. Since Ethan's death, Dan had become even more dependable, hardly leaving her side. He'd changed in more ways than that though. She often caught him with a far off look, as if he was seeing something different than her. "Earth to Dan, are you in there?" she said with a little laugh."Sorry," Dan said, shaking his head a little. He turned towards Lily, Ethan's sister. She had always hung around them while they were growing up, and now, as a teenager, he was noticing how beautiful she is. 'Not the right time Dan,' he thought."I did hear you. I know it seems crazy, but I think they are trying to help you. You know, focus on some normal things. Besides, you're smart, but with everything that has happened, even you must be behind in your studies," Dan said, a sad smile lifting his lips. "Ethan wouldn't want you to put your li

"The scriptures aren't like, a religious thing. Or, not really I guess", Miri said to Ethan, staring right at him instead of the road while accelerating down the highway. "Eyes on the road!" Miri just smirked. "Like I was saying, the scriptures are actually culled from ancient writings, religions, prophecies, even some artwork, of all the cultures on Earth. Religion always tries to answer 'why' and usually the answers are ridiculous, because people are stupid." Miri smiled again. "Still, after thousands of years, and billions of people, asking 'why', some patterns emerge. We saw the patterns hundreds of years ago, and have been preparing." "We. You mean your organization, the Fraternity of the Rising Phoenix?" Ethan said, looking at her sidelong. It was a ridiculous name, and he still thought it was all some elaborate hoax. It isn't often you come back from the dead, and find a hot woman and a bunch of commandos who say t

  • Assassin System in a Magical World   Scene of the Crime

Sardi felt like he was a criminal returning to the scene of a crime as he walked slowly out of an alley and approached the battle site. He really must have been passed out for a while, because the crime scene mages were loading the bodies into carts. Each body was wrapped in a black shroud, and a visible magic seal was on them. Sardi was told this protected them from rotting, and from people tampering with them to cover their magical signatures. ‘My magic is all over this place… though how will I explain how Shinra and I did so much damage? He is only a zombie after all. I’m probably the only person who knows how … capable he is,’ Sardi thought. Capable was a strange word to describe the shadow of death he’d witnessed before he fell unconscious. ‘Shinra, you have a lot of explaining to do.’ As the crime scene team was busy cleaning up, it was easy for Sardi to spot the Sheriff in charge. He was a large muscled man with very dark skin, a bald head, and a deep scowl on his fa

Sardi couldn’t ignore Wintersbane. Whether a Major in the military, or a Senior Sheriff, he was definitely Sardi’s superior. “Of course, Sheriff. I mean, Major, Wintersbane. How can I help?” Sardi tried to sound neutral and respectful. He needed to get back to the Vampires before they left on their own. Or ate someone. ‘Diplomatic immunity has to have some limits…?’“I heard that you and Deputy First Class Shinra were the victims of this attack.” He paused then and looked around at the blasted and blood stained cobbles. His eyes almost glowed with amusement after the word ‘victims’, but he didn’t comment. “You said that Deputy Shinra helped you beat back the attackers, and he is ok? Are you ok?”“Yes Sir. Shinra reported back to headquarters while I scouted the area for other casualties or attackers. We were pretty confident any remaining attackers fled the scene, but I was worried that a civilian may have stumbled into the battle and been injured.”“Good thinking, Deput

The Simaldrian Forest was known as the farthest edge of Monster civilization on the continent, if it could be called that. It was home to many nomadic beasts, and clusters of small villages that all managed to coexist without too much fighting. There was an unspoken understanding amongst the magical and monstrous beings in the forest: it was better to live free in the forest, than have to follow the rules and laws of the powerful monster towns and Countries in this part of the continent.Just whispering Sekhnatio was enough to frighten most of the Forest’s inhabitants to make the sign of the evil eye and be on their way. That sort of organised power was terrifying to creatures that just wanted to live amongst themselves.“The Vampires have sent their heralds, and left their messages all over the forest. Don’t they realise we don’t care what happens to them?” The creature stomped its front hooves into the leaf covered ground, stirring them up into the air with the strength of the

“It is strange to just be hiding out in an old manor like this,” Eltast said, looking around the opulent, but dusty room. The sitting room was large, with dusky velvet furniture, and large drapes covering expensive windows made from spell hardened glass. “In Sekhnatio we could deal with any aggressors ourselves, not tiptoe around to avoid a diplomatic incident.”Mentioning the Capital City of the Vampires made them all pay attention. The other vampires nodded in agreement, and Sardi’s eyes went a little wide.“What is… that is, would you mind sharing what Sekhnatio is like? I’ve heard stories, of course, but I think they have been exaggerated,” Sardi said. He was nearly a full grown man, but he looked child-like at the moment. However, even Wintersbane seemed to sit up straighter, curiosity also showing in his face.“I’ve also heard tales that it is very … different from human settlements,” Wintersbane shared.Cardual smiled slightly, and Selena let out a guffaw.“That is an und

The hot blood gushed into her mouth, and she arched her whole body to get closer, to hold on more tightly. The tingling filled every part of her, until it felt like her entire body was vibrating in time with the heartbeat she could feel through her lips.“There, there, sweet child. That is enough for now,” a calm, low voice said. She tried to clamp her mouth, her teeth, her hands more tightly, to hold on to the source of this life giving blood, but an unstoppable force peeled her away. Not roughly, but with the kind of power that is relentless. Suddenly she was looking up at a dark sky obscured by the dark boughs of large trees.“Mimi. Rest here. I need to go check on the others,” Cardual said as he rolled the sleeve of his jacket down over his unblemished arm.‘He heals so fast,’ Mimi thought. She felt incredibly powerful and extremely tired at the moment. That was the problem with Cardual’s blood, anything more than a drop was too much for a weaker vampire to process. It p

  • Assassin System in a Magical World   Blood Vision

Selena bathed in the blood spraying from the savaged throat of the druid in front of her. After disabling his magic flow, she tore her fingers through his neck like it was paper. Perhaps that was why she was distracted. The taste of blood on her tongue, the hot shower painting her face, was a respite in the midst of a battle nearly won.Which was when the boulder golem crushed most of the bones in her spine, the ribs on her left side, and powdered her pelvis. Vampires are really tough, but boulder golems are designed to maximise damage and strength at the expense of agility, and she let it get within striking distance.“Arghghg,” she cried out, the as the blow launched her across the room, into a coffee table. She couldn’t walk. She could feel preternatural healing kicking in, but her pelvis needed to regenerate, not just mend together. She lay motionless, feeling her spine reconnecting, and the feeling returning to her limbs. It wasn’t fast enough though, she heard the heavy

He couldn’t just avoid the attack though, he had to finish this one off before the other 4 combatants got their shit together. He jumped, hard, into a forward twisting flip, easily clearing the guard. She was the kindest, most capable, and brilliant person he had ever known. And, though he spent every moment since his parents died trying to take care of her, he knew she had taken care of him even more. Being in the city without her had been difficult, but, if he was honest, he worried about her less after sending her his wages. ‘My life has been pretty complicated this last little while,’ he thought. He knew he was making excuses. He did believe her life would actually be better without him. She was more resourceful than he ever was, and the other villagers liked her much more than him.‘So why

The room was Pitch Black, so Raisd wasn't sure if his eyes were open or not at first, so he blinked a few times. ‘Definitely open.’ The fact that he was lying in a bed instead of bleeding in a gutter was a good sign, but he wasn't sure of anything else. He slowly moved his hands down his chest and body, feeling for any bandages or gaping wounds.‘Huh, not only am I naked, I seem to be in one piece.’ Which was amazing in and of itself, because the seven finger Gremlin counter attack is enough to kill most mages. Clearly he was both lucky and, maybe, tougher than he thought. He tried to stand, but that is when he noticed the weight across his legs. Not able to see, he reached down and realized the weight was a pair of legs draped across him. His fingers traced their way up those legs until he found their intersection. It was warm there, and his fingers were tickled by the fine hairs they brushed up against. ‘God I hope this is Mimi,’ was all he thought before the

“I promise, it is usually cleaner here,” Loren said as she rushed around trying to stuff books and scrolls back onto the shelves while gathering up a precarious pile of dishes. She definitely didn’t care what the place looked like when Naori’s brother broke in. Funny how something so random could lead to Loren trying to clean her place. She looked over her shoulder to see Naori just standing still, eyes widened by the mess, no doubt. ‘I need to distract her maybe? Where am I going to put all of this stuff!’ Loren was not used to caring what anyone thought about her, her space, or anything she did, really. “Wow. Just…. Wow,” was all Naori said, eyes still wide.‘Oh god, she thinks it is worse than living on the streets, she’s never seen anyone live like this… dammit!’, but what Loren said out loud was, “I just need a few more minutes. Conspiracy Uncovered

The office was surprisingly orderly for an assassin, Shinra thought. Tastefully arranged sofas, end tables with a high polish, and a full bookcase. He went straight to the desk though, to see if he could find what the assassin guild leader was talking about.‘Would it just be on top? Is that too easy?’ Shinra looked, but the few pieces of parchment on top of the desk were innocuous bills and tally of equipment. He opened the top drawer and only saw quills and inkstones. The larger drawer underneath was locked.“Why don’t I have lockpicking skills? I can do everything else…” He flexed his newly healed hand, still amazed at how whole and pain free they were, after the devastating burns he’d suffered. “Well, I’m strong enough to just rip it open,” he said, then gripped it tightly and pulled with all his strength. He felt the small release of power, ‘shit,’ he thought and then flung the drawer behind him as hard as he could. It was the right move, as the entire desk exploded in a sho

“Filthy blood slut," was all the lesser Earl of Clodven had said. It wasn't a nice thing to say about anyone, and Raisd had heard much worse. This time though, it was directed at his betrothed. To his credit, Raisd showed enormous restraint by only breaking the man's nose. The young lesser Earl and his friends didn't agree, and so now Raisd was in an honour bout.“The first to ten wins the bout,” one of the hangers-on was intoning, "and may request an honour payment." “I think I'll ask for one of Its fangs," the arrogant noble said.Raisd paid him no mind. ‘Foppish, useless nobles think life is a silly game. This bout is probably the highlight of his week’. He knew the type well. The lesser Earl’s father, or grandfather, had been useful to the Empire once upon a time, but then they produced entitled, talentless wastes of flesh like this. The patriarch of the family has probably all but disowned him.‘If I'd punched Shinra, he probably would have punched back and we'd be having a

Raisd was having a weird night. Actually, everyday had been weird since his betrothal. He couldn't get over the fact that suddenly people knew he was an active part of the imperial family. Well, maybe vampires didn't count as people, but they knew. If that was all that had changed, he could deal. After all he had been in military intelligence, and had infiltrated many places as part of his work, including the deputies office. Unfortunately he was quickly apprised of how different human and vampire customs were. Which was why he was lying in bed with General Mimi right now. Uncomfortably. Wrapped up in his own blanket and wearing a full set of clothes. He wasn't 100% certain, but he was pretty sure that she was naked under the thin sheet she had draped over herself. He made sure all the lights were off though and just laid there staring up at the ceiling in the dark. It had been like this for a few days now, ever since the rest of the vampire delegation went back to their capital

Shinra was surprised. ‘Shadow Heal isn’t one of the skills in the list. Does this mean they are all low level skills? Or are there a tonne of skills that the System just doesn’t show me?’Either way, this wasn’t what he was expecting. ‘Healing is high level magic… what does Shadow Healing mean? Am I a mage now?...’ He knew he wasn’t though. He looked around and did not see the primal flow of mana in the world. He was a zombie. One with interesting skills, but a zombie all the same.“Unless a Ninja is a different class of being?” The head Assassin said Ninja enough that it did make Shinra wonder.
