Chapter 10

Chapter 10.

Mave woke up in the hospital and he was just staring at the white ceiling of the hospital. He knew he was in the hospital, he could smell it and he could see it. Everything was still like a dream to him and he tried to recall it all.

He remembered the fight with the monster dog and then he frowned. 

‘it wasn’t supposed to be like that, the monsters were not supposed to be that strong and this much people were not supposed to die, just what is happening.’

He thought and then placed his hands on his head and sighed. He had expected everything to be easier this time around, but it was beginning to get so different and difficult. 

‘I need answers, that’s for sure. But the system is not so cooperative when it comes to that aspect. That reminds me, there was a level up prompt, just before I blacked out.’

Mave focused on his stats again, so he can see everything very well.

Mave stared at his stats and he was still very surprised because of what he was seeing. 

‘How is this possible, before I was E class just like every regular human but now I am at D class after defeating that monster, how come?’ 

He asked himself.

‘in my past life, humans couldn’t increase their grades, only monsters could do that after devouring a lot of humans and gaining more energy and power. Humans could only increase their level after they gain experience from killing monsters, taking augmenting portions or wearing augmenting armaments, but all those are temporary. But I have done none of those, so how am I upgrading just like a monster.’ 

He kept looking at the stats window, hoping to discover something. 

‘or have I awakened already? Humans only increase their grades after they awaken, so that they can be able to fight monsters.’

He asked himself, but then he looked at his status window again, specifically the part with his talents, and it was still blank.

‘No. I have not awakened, if I have I would have Received my talent. But I have not, meaning I have not awakened yet. So what’s happening then? System are you there? I need answers'

He beckoned on the system but there was no response from it. He just sighed more, Knowing that it was not helpful at the moment.

Mave remembered that he had been seriously wounded during the last fight and he touched himself, trying to find his wounds but he could not find any ,they had all healed and he knew it was the effect of the system and the new skill :Healer ,that he had acquired. 

‘so what will I do now?’

‘last time I awakened, I awakened as a B class with fire and earth talent.’ 

He smiled, knowing just how that talent had saved his life a lot, and also made him a big shot in the society.  

‘if I play my cards right, I might just become more famous than I have been before.’ He smiled more, since people who awakened with B class and above were few and were very valuable to the country, because they had the power to defeat monsters that appeared in each nation.

A class was even fewer and S ranks were very very rare. He could only remember three S rank in the entire country. And they hardly made appearances. He didn’t even meet any one of them.

There was a knock on the door, which drew him out of his thoughts and he looked to see who it was. The door opened and Jiren walked in. 

The moment Mave saw him, he remembered just how he died the last time and he inwardly became angry, because Jiren betrayed him. But he didn’t reveal it visibly. 

Jiren was wearing a different attire and was looking much different compared to how weak he looked when the monster dog was attacking him. He looked strong, with an air of confidence  around him. He was wearing polished battle armour and Mave could only suspect one thing, he had awakened.

And to confirm it,  Mave focused his gaze on him and immediately Jiren's stats appeared.

*Jiren Yosuka, B class, level 5.*

‘B rank just like before, meaning his talent will still be the same…’ Mave thought.

“Mave, finally you’re awake. It’s been three weeks now since you went unconscious. I got so worried.” Jiren said as he sat down beside Mave.

“two what?” immediately, Mave forgot about his anger and replied with great surprise , sitting up immediately to look at Jiren with so much disbelief.

“yeah, three weeks and some days now.  So I can roughly say you’ve been unconscious for close to a month.”Jiren  confirmed, trying to explain to Mave,  but Mave did not still believe him.

Jiren had to take out his phone and show him the date and Mave then believed him.

“shit, that long already. What happened?” Mave said defeated.

“I should be asking you. You passed out after defeating that dog monster and you were badly hurt. But surprisingly your wounds healed very quickly in a few hours. But you still did not wake-up,  so I thought the dog monster had poisoned you or something, but the doctor said you were fine and nothing was wrong with you. So what happened with you?” Jiren said. 

“I really don’t know man. I really don’t know. It all still feels like yesterday to me.” Maverick said and then stood up from the bed and went to look outside from the window.

“what else has happened?”

“the strangest things, you will not believe it dude. Like the world has changed so much in just a few weeks.” Jiren said excitedly.

Mave already knew most of what happened since he had experienced them before in his past life, but he still inquired of more from Jiren because he wanted to know if things had gone differently compared to before. Because from what he could tell, several things were not like before. He was not supposed to have passed out for three weeks,  it was not like that in his past life. 

“What happened?”

“well monsters has been popping up around the world, much stronger monsters than the dog in the school and military can not handle them. The military basically got wiped out. It’s only awakened people who have strange powers called talents that can fight and defeat them.” Jiren said. 

“really? Are you one of these awakened people?” Mave said as he watched from the window.The city was pretty much still the same, but now looking more rundown and having less people. It will take awhile for them to fully recover from the damages the initial monsters did. 

“ Yes I am.” Jiren said with pride as he showcased himself to Mave with confidence before continuing. 

“B class, man. That places me like among the most popular people existing right now, since the government needs me to take down some big bad monsters. Hehehehe”

“I see.” Mave said calmly, not in anyway surprised even thought Jiren thought he’d be surprised. 

‘seems everyone has already awakened, then why have I not awakened and why was I unconscious for three weeks?’ Mave asked himself with a hint of worry.

“I wonder if you’d be among the special people like me Mave. You did some pretty neat stuff back when you took down that monster dog, low level stuff but since you did it before we got awakened, proves to show something..  Anyway, I should leave you to rest. There’s a raid I have to join in the next hour and I have to prepare. Oh and a raid is when special people like me attack and take down a colony of these monsters. There’s a newly discovered colony in the woods,  catch you later.”

Jiren said stood up to leave. 

“wait…” Mave said.  

“where is Talia? “ he asked since he had not seen her since. 

“oh Talia, she’s fine.  She’s an awakened too. She’s in my team and probably getting ready for the raid too. Don’t worry about her, I’ll take good care of her.” Jiren said with a smirk and then left. 

Mave tried as much as he could to control himself, but his anger was boiling inwardly. 

““Control yourself Mave”” the system said in Mave’s head and immediately Mave’s eyes widened in surprise and then he smiled, glad that the system was still there with him. Because he has a lot of questions to ask at the moment. 

‘system?’ Mave said mentally before waiting for a response.

““Yes Maverick. I know you have a lot of questions and you will have answers In due time”” The system assured Mave. But Mave found it hard to believe because even up till now, he was yet to have any good answer. He couldn’t hold back his questions anymore, so he asked .

‘why have I been unconscious for close to a month now,  System?’ 

““That’s all me. I had to work on your body by remodifying it, so it will be able to accommodate all the upgrades you’d be receiving as we proceed.”” The system said. 

‘really? ‘ Mave asked and then began looking at his body. And to confirm that what the system said was true, he could see that his body was different, it was better than before. He had added a few inches in height, his muscles were now more developed and he felt much fit and athletic compared to before. 

‘then why do I have to be unconscious for you to do it and why did it have to take so long? ‘  he still had his misgivings, so he did not just accept it. 

“”That’s because I needed you unconscious to be able to fully work on your body. Your body is much more relaxed and workable when you are unconscious. And it took so long because you had depleted the energy available in your last fight. It had to take a while for me to passively acquire more energy to do what was necessary “” the system replied. 

‘hmm, you really do have an explanation for everything. Why have I not yet been awakened yet like the others have?’  he asked again.

““that’s also my doing. Since your body was unconscious, there is no way you could have awakened in that state. And I did not want disturbances while I worked. Do not worry, since you are up now, the awakening should come to you naturally.””

Mave nodded and then went back to the bed to sit down whilst he thought. 

‘tell me more about this world merge ‘ he asked the system.

“”the little I can tell you I have already told you.  Your world and another world is merging, allowing for monsters, who are the inhabitants of that world to enter into your world and also for you humans to enter their world.””

‘we can enter into the other world? And why is it that the two worlds are merging, what happens when it fully merges and can it be stopped?’ Mave asked more. 

““Yes you can, through the rips and tears in space that you people call portals. Your friends will be entering one in a few minutes for a raid as he called it. For your other questions, I can not say, you’d have to find out all that for yourself.”” The system said and Mave sighed. 

‘you really are so unhelpful sometimes. Yes I know of these portals, I’ve entered some of them in my past life and the moment we killed all the monsters there and destroy the energy core of the place, the portal closes and monster can’t pass through to our world anymore. I still don’t get this though, the logic we had then was that the Energy core is what is opening the portals for monsters to pass through to our world. That’s why we usually destroy them.’ Mave said to the system in deep thought.

The system did not say anything any further and Mave wanted for a while for answers and then sighed, knowing that it was not going to answer. But even with that he did not give up. 

‘Since the system has refused to give answers, I’d have to find them for myself, but how?’ he reserved his thoughts to himself.  

‘If this portals truly leads to the world merging with ours, then rather than just closing it. I can explore it’ he thought and then laid back in bed.

‘I really can’t do anything for now in this my weak state. I’d need to get reawakened first. If things are the way they are like it was in my last life. High ranked monsters above D rank should be coming out now. I can only manage a low rank D class monster right now.’ He sighed even more. 

““Mave, Portal Anomaly detected. 1km away from here,  in the woods.”” 

The system alerted him immediately and he sat up and listened attentively.

“what? What type of portal anomaly, and how do you know it’s a portal anomaly? Portal anomalies are not supposed to happen this early. What’s happening?” Mave said,  bombarding the system with all his questions. 

““I’m not certain of the type of Anomaly, but I can clearly detect an anomaly in the nearby portal that just opened. And don’t ask me how, you aren’t privy to it yet.”” The system said. 

‘portal anomaly in my past life basically means something strange is happening in the portal and is usually different from the normal type of portals. They are usually more difficult compared to regular portals.’ Mave thought, clearly remembering his first portal anomaly and he almost died at that time. 

“wait, where did you say this portal opened?” Mave asked immediately 

““ In the woods, one kilometer away from here.”” The system said. 

Mave’s eye widened in shock..

‘that’s where Jiren is heading and it seems like it’s the same portal that I entered in my last life. But… ‘

Mave jumped out of bed and immediately discarded the hospital garment he was wearing. He looked around and found a joggers and immediately wore it. There was no shirt so he just stood shirtless thinking of what to do.

‘I shouldn’t be bothered, but things are happening too fast unlike before and I need to understand why. And Jiren and Talia is there, I can’t let them die until I find answers.’ He thought to himself. 

He looked at the open window and the looked at the door, deciding which he’d use for his exit. He considered the door, but didn’t want to have to answer different questions from the nurses and doctors, so he just opted for the window and jumped out of it, heading to the direction of the portal.

“System, show me the way”

Jiren and the rest of the Crew were already inside the portal for a while now.

“For a low B class portal, this portal looks easy.” Jiren said, withdrawing his lance from the skull of a huge spider like monster on the ground, causing the black blood from it to splatter on the ground. The focused ahead, wanting to go in further without fear.

“Don’t get too confident now, this is a strange place, anything can happen. I’m sure you’re aware of that.” Theon the leader of the group of five that had entered the portal said to him. Theon as well was cleaning his sword from the black blood of the spider like monster. 

Theon was a man in his early 30’s and having a nicely shaved beards.

There were spider monster corpses all over the ground, the ones that the team had dispatched as they proceeded further inside. 

The portal they had entered led to a cave like terrain, with several stalactites and stalagmites structures made of the same rock as the cave. 

The cave looked very large, with several routes and crevices of which the spiders They had dispatched  crawled out from.

It was somewhat dark and hard to see very well, it was almost looking like it was night. But the fact was that there was no source of light in the cave, hence why it was dark. Making it the ideal breeding ground for the spider like monsters, should they share the same qualities as regular spiders. 

Theon and his team were only able to navigate the caves because they had a teammate whose unique talent was navigation.

“So Sky, which way now?” Theon asked, turning his attention away from Jiren to her. 

Sky was girl with blonde hair and the navigator of the team. She crouched to touch the ground activating her talent, immediate she could see the entire terrain like a holographic map.

“this place is like a large mountain, inside the mountain are different levels that look like caves and we are at the middle. I sense the energy core of this portal at the lower levels of the mountain, so if we follow this route, it should lead us to the lower floor” she pointed to her left, where there was a cave like entrance again for them to continue. 

“Excellent,  we heard her. So let’s get going.” Theon announced to the group as he sheathed his sword and began leading the group ahead. 

“but there seem to be another location or someplace else underneath the mouth,below the energy core. I don’t know, for some reason I can navigate that territory, it’s just showing as a black region on my navigation map.” Sky expressed a little worry as she told the rest of her group. It was just like her talent could not reach there,  or was not supposed to reach there and she could not tell why. It was like she had CCTV cameras and footage installed in everyplace she navigates, but the cameras in that place were not working or was destroyed. 

“what’s there to fear. If anything comes up, I’ll just kill it. Have a little confidence in yourself will you. There’s no threat out there that I cant handle,  at least in this c class portal world or whatever this place is.” Jiren said with confidence, reassuring her. 

Talia who was also among the group sighed at Jiren’s exuberance. 

‘But he had been correct though, he had always managed to kill everything monster that had come their team, both in this portal and other portals. So maybe there’s nothing to worry about . Besides she is also here and Theon is here as well, and I know how strong I am and how strong Theon is.’ She smiled softly and then continued on behind Theon.

All five of them continued ahead, along the route that Sky had provided for them,  and just like she said the route led them down, they could feel how the road got steeper and steeper as they continued, until they got to the lower levels.

“we are here” Sky said. 

“Yeah, it’s quite obvious” Theon said as he unsheathed is sword and readied himself for what he was seeing. 

Ahead of them about 300ms away, was the energy core, a glowing crystalline gem, glowing like an electric bulb. But hanging on the ceiling was a nest of the monster spiders numbering about 100 and then a ginormous looking spider in the centre, supposedly the mother spider. 

“yup, now we do what we came for” Jiren smirked grasping his Lance tighter knowing that there was going to be a fight. The monsters won’t just let them destroy the energy core just like that. 

“so that’s the energy core, powering the portals?” Sky asked looking at it since it was the first time she was seeing one. It was the first time she was accompanying them to the final stages of a portal.

“yeah, that’s it. Without that energy core, the portals will collapse and close up in an hour and monsters can no longer cross over to our world..” Donre said. The last male in the team, a huge looking man with beards, wearing more armour than all of them combined, and still able to move very fine.

“enough talk already, let’s do this. I have to get back home for dinner. My wife is waiting for me.” Theon said as he moved ahead slowly, swinging his sword that had began cackling with electricity. Since he just activated his talent.
