"Wh - Wha - What happened?" Chen Tu removed the rice crispies by using the scooping tool provided. Everything was happening too quickly and ended before he could react.
"How can the ingredient burn that quickly? I didn't purchase the fake product, I hope!" Chen Tu's heart was in pain for wasting the portion of Five-Colored Spiritual Grains. Although it only cost him half a Spiritual Coin for that portion, it was still a lot to Chen Tu.
The mistake also causes a hint of anxiety inside Chen Tu's mind. Of course, the effect was insignificant for now... But there's no guarantee that it wouldn't worsen from accumulation.
Still, the failure in his first tryst made Chen Tu give his ingredients and the Pill Formula another check. And after he adjusted the flame slightly, Chen Tu began with the second attempt.
Even after being careful, the Five-Colored Spiritual Grains lasted just fifteen seconds before they exploded into another pot of rice crispies. This result would be amazing if Chen Tu wasn't refining pills but cooking.
Of course, that wasn't the case here.
This failure made Chen Tu find it hard to accept the fact. And without reviewing the Pill Formula again, he started his third attempt. Naturally, the flame intensity is reduced once more to prevent the accident from repeating itself.
It is still a failure.
"Again!" Chen Tu continued with the fourth set of ingredients. To his disappointment, the fire was too weak to remove the grains' impurities. The flame he used was far from qualified to be labeled as intense.
Naturally, it was another failure on Chen Tu's side. The fire was too intense or soft, and the Five-Colored Spiritual Grains were too sensitive. But this time, Chen Tu could properly grasp the fire control.
**Boom!!!**
Of course, learning to control is one matter, and the chain reaction is another. The cauldron is again filled with rice crispies, but it gave Chen Tu confidence in his fifth set of ingredients.
Chen Tu finally purified the Five-Colored Spiritual Grains in his fifth attempt. This success allowed him to discover the radiant and lively colors of the Spiritual Grains. As for the thin husk that once protected each grain, they're now burned into ashes.
But another failure followed once Chen Tu started with the following step.
According to the Pill Formula, the step after removing impurities was cooking both ingredients simultaneously.
The procedure explains that the Hundred-Year Mountain Yam should be added after cutting the root into thick slices. Using gentle flame, both ingredients shall be cooked until they secrete their starch droplet into a pool of concoction.
This was the record written on the second part of the Pill Formula.
But in Chen Tu's case, the concoction didn't appear. Instead, he was greeted with a lump of unappetizing gruel that not even his Crimson-Tailed Pheasant would look for the second time. Needless to say, this was how he failed on his fifth set of ingredients.
After throwing the failure aside, Chen Tu took out the sixth set of ingredients. This time, his mistake comes with a higher cost. With both ingredients used in the second part of the process, each failure equals forfeiting a Spiritual Coin.
With his carefulness, Chen Tu continued. This chain of failure doesn't seem to be easygoing to Chen Tu. It took him five attempts to discover the correct method of collecting the pool of starchy concoction.
According to the record for the third step, the concoction should be allowed to boil gently until the water content separates. Once this step was achieved, it would be considered mature to be divided into individual portions.
But the continuous failure made Chen Tu hesitates to begin the third step.
(Would I continue with the mistakes? Is there no way to go except seeking success through an unaccountable number of failures?)
There was a hint of helplessness hovering around Chen Tu. Although thirty Spiritual Coins were enough to purchase thirty sets of ingredients, Chen Tu had already used a third in the name of practice.
Furthermore, he was just in the middle of the entire process. He couldn't help but somewhat doubt his skill and how many more until he succeeded in his first pill refinement process. Could it be another ten more sets?
Or perhaps, the remaining twenty sets were hardly enough?
Even if he succeeded, he still had to refine the rest before bringing his outcome to be evaluated. There could be a few outcomes on this part.
First, it was a failure if the pill quality was below the requirement. And second, the rating was enough to be graded as a Regular Grain Pellet. A pill of this level had the effectiveness of half a day, and if Chen Tu managed to refine a Two-Star Grain Pellet, that effectiveness would be doubled to one whole day.
Their price was naturally half a Spiritual Coin for the regular Grain Pellet and one full coin for the Two-Star version.
Chen Tu could only hesitate for less than half a minute. If he delayed the third step too long, the concoction would be wasted. After all, this wasn't a pool of watery concoction. Being left or cooked too long would destroy all its medicinal value.
He immediately made up his mind to continue. But it was already too late to continue. The concoction had started to lose part of its medicinal value, and even with effort, it could not thicken properly.
This ended up as another waste. But with one success, it fueled Chen Tu's conviction to continue. His eleventh attempt also turned out to be another failure.
On his twelve's attempt, Chen Tu finally progressed safely through the second part. He ensured that he was well prepared and continued without delay. And to his surprise, the challenge was absent on the third and fourth steps.
By following the instruction on the Pill Formula, Chen Tu proceeded past both steps and came up with three and a half pills worth of thickening concoction. And after waiting for ten or so minutes, his work is finally done here!
(What actually happened here? Even I can't believe that the third and fourth step written in the Pill Formula is that easy to overcome!)
Chen Tu was unsure of what feeling he should have while removing the three complete Grain Pellets from the Pill Mold.
"Let's compare the Grain Pellets I've refined with those included inside the monthly resources bag. This way, it would enable me to identify the difference." Chen Tu came up with a smart idea. Because this was his first time refining a pill, he was clueless about what to do next.In his case, there's nothing better than comparing his product with those available inside his resources bag. After all, those Grain Pellets had to pass a certain threshold in quality before distributing them to the disciples. The six Grain Pellets were separated into two even sides. The one on the left is his product, and those on the right are from the grotto. Appearance-wise, there's really nothing much to nitpick about. As for the size and smell, the one supplied by the grotto was slightly better than his own. But such disparity was normal, considering this is Chen Tu's first successful batch. Furthermore, the quality of a pill is greatly affected by the alchemist who refined them. With sufficient practic
Chen Tu felt his blood boil slightly from surrounded by all these disciples. Although their attention wasn't directed at him, their concentration was somewhat contagious, especially to someone with a keen sense like Chen Tu. Furthermore, being capable of reading normally now allowed Chen Tu to understand the Supply Office's operation and overall structure. As a faction with three cities and more than twenty town-level settlements affiliated to them, the Blood Refining Grotto had responsibility over the commoners concerning their safety, protection, and interest. This means there would be over a thousand types of requests posted on the Assignment Board for the disciples to participate in. There are all kinds of assignments available, ranging from the smallest reward of a few Spiritual Replenishing Pills to some that pay hundreds. Obviously, the Blood Refining Grotto supported this practice. But a stable flow of manpower was necessary to keep the operation ongoing. Hence, nothing wa
The story had to be reversed back to yesterday night. It was right after Chen Tu discovered something odd about the Five-Colored Spiritual Grains. (Did nobody notice something like this before?) Chen Tu asked himself. Thanks to the heightened Spiritual Sense after half a cycle of the Sun and Moon Condensation Art, he could observe the Spiritual Energy hovering around the grains. And through this discovery, Chen Tu noticed that out of the thousand or so grains in that portion, a small number of them are no longer "alive." Of course, when this [living] concept was applied to these seedlings, they were no longer capable of sprouting. Although the existence wouldn't cause further damage to the final product, there's always an "if" moment applied. This discovery gave Chen Tu a creative idea. Since the first part of the Pill Formula was to remove the impurity from the Five-Colored Spiritual Grains, does that means it was actually a process of removing these dead grains? To confirm his
The verdict stunned Chen Tu. To Chen Tu, nothing hits him harder than being told there are no Two-Star Pills found in the seventy Grain Pellets. And with this result in hand, doesn't that equivalent to telling him that the modified recipe doesn't work as intended? But at the same time, there's no doubt that his newer recipe had a greater yield and higher success rate. The only regrettable part concerning this recipe is the questionable medicinal potency of the concoction. It might be safe to assume that the mixture was too diluted to achieve a greater yield. Thus, the end product ended up slightly meeting the minimal requirement of a standard pill. Although this concern could be handled with enough patience, there's no shortcut for Chen Tu to use here. In Alchemy, a shortcut is akin to a double-edged sword. You could uncover the essence or go astray from your primary intention. Hence, it was also why such a thought was considered taboo in this profession. It also wasn't a secret
"Is there something bothering you?" Qin Lei asked during their dinner. As someone older than Chen Tu by a few years, he naturally sensed something in Chen Tu's head. He had no reason to dig into his matters unless Chen Tu was willing. Anyway, there's a limit to being helpful to his junior. Furthermore, he hates guessing. If there's something he wanted to know, he would simply ask. "It is something related to pill refinement. I am thinking about asking the teacher the next time we're called to help." Chen Tu politely replied and brushed over the topic. Although there's nothing wrong with sharing things with Qin Lei, Chen Tu feels it was slightly irrelevant to share this with Qin Lei. As a matter of fact, there's a reason for this. While sharing what he experienced over these two days with Qin Lei wouldn't hurt him, Chen Tu felt that he shouldn't bother Qin Lei too much concerning Alchemy. After all, the latter did share with Chen Tu that the study in Alchemy wasn't his priority. T
(What a joke!) Chen Tu's refusal was like a slap to the owner's face. Even if he could afford it, why would he spend the money on buying a piece of rock that had no specific uses? Of course, it could have been different if the owner had been sure about the content inside the stone. But obviously, he doesn't. If he did, perhaps the price of whatever was inside could be worth more than five mere Spiritual Coins. Since he couldn't deliver some trustworthiness in his words, who would be willing to pay his asking price? Even in the eyes of passersby, this thing here was simply a useless rock. Chen Tu's expression remained firm and collected. Although the stall owner only asked for five Spiritual Coins, wouldn't Chen Tu have a better place to spend his money? For example... Buying five more sets of ingredients to refine the Grain Pellets? Of course, it would be great if there was really [True Essence Obsidian Ink] inside the stone. Otherwise, he would have wasted the money for nothi
With a more organized yet relaxing schedule, Chen Tu could allocate his time preparing the ingredients before leaving them to mature. Additionally, although his tinkered recipe had a terrible chance of refining a Two-Star Pill, the losses can be compensated by its higher yield and success rate. The freedom of time he had from the preparation would also give Chen Tu more flexibility in his time to visit the Training Hall. After all, with the ingredient partially handled, the concoction time can be shortened to roughly ten minutes per cauldron. The remaining time would be divided evenly to his rest, studying, working, and cultivating. In a blink of an eye, a few days had passed. Over these few days, Chen Tu had a stable income of fifteen to twenty Spiritual Coins from refining the Grain Pellet alone. If the Contribution Token earned from the Spiritual Garden were added, that would be between fifty to seventy coins. While his choice is slightly less than working in the Spiritual Gard
Qin Lei had left his seat and stood beside Chen Tu at the end of his sentence. Judging from his expression, there's a hint of conflicting emotion fighting inside his head. The conflict was fierce, but as a matter of fact, it only lasted for a few seconds in reality. Considering how Qin Lei's knees gradually bend forward, what he was trying to do is obvious. (I'll kneel in front of junior brother Chen if that's what it takes to get some help...) "Senior brother." Chen Tu's call instantly brought Qin Lei's thoughts back to his physical body. But the strength between his legs was gone as his knees approached the ground faster than they supposed. Fortunately, a foot came forward before Qin Lei's knees touched the ground. A pair of hands firmly grabbed his shoulders simultaneously and helped Qin Lei to stand. "I'm not sure how much I had, honestly... But let us visit the Worldly Treasures Pavilion tomorrow after the harvest. With another day of income, I'm sure we could afford to buy
