Constantine felt like he had been dreaming for a very long time. He clearly remembered the night in the storm when he and his friend had been struck by lightning through a stroke of bad luck. But after that, the only thing he could remember was living the life of another person.
This life he lived where he was someone else seemed like a really long dream to Constantine, one that was extremely real, like he had truly become that person. But Constantine was still able to differentiate both lives from each other.
He knew the life where he was Constantine Cleveland, a normal teenager on backwater Earth. And he knew the new life where he became Ruger Whitebrook, a powerful evolver in the fantastical world of Ascended Firmament Star.
In the dream where Constantine became Ruger, he followed the life of this powerful Evolver from the moment when he was born and discovered to have an extraordinary talent in the path of evolution to the moment of his death.
Who was an Evolver?
An Evolver was any being that transcended the limits of his original self to become something more, something extraordinary, and something unique and individual.
There is a saying in the Ascended Star Firmament, Ruger's home, that life was in a constant change between four forms of birth, growth, evolution, and death.
Any life that is born, in order to avoid death, must grow, in order to accept change must evolve and in order to be reborn must first die.
These are the maxims of life that everybody in the Ascended Star Firmament believed in, so in order to continue living, one must continue to grow and evolve.
The life of Ruger Whitebrook was very different from that of Constantine. He was born very talented into the powerful Whitebrook family of the Wisteria Kingdom. His father was the Duke of the kingdom and his mother was the first lady of the Dukedom.
Ruger was the first prince and his birth was a blessing to the whole Whitebrook Dukedom because an auspicious phenomenon appeared in the form of a lightning constellation formed by thousands of small lightning stars in the form of a crown. This proved Ruger's aptitude as a king, and it brought joy to his parents and family.
Right from birth, Ruger had awakened his ability to control the Constellation Lightning... a very rare and powerful form of lightning that drew power from the stars in the universe and possessed incomparable destructive might.
The constellation lightning was incomparably blinding and mighty!
But in this story, Ruger Whitebrook was not the only protagonist. There was also his life-bound page, Vader, who was equally as talented as Ruger was.
In the Wisteria Kingdom, every royal heir had a life-bound page whose life was bound to them from the moment of their birth. From among the commoners, a few families would be selected to be nurtured following a secret technique so that each child born in that family would possess special qualities that made them fit to become bound by life to their masters.
These life-bound children were supposed to be eternal companions of their masters, who would grow together and traverse the journey of evolution with each other until that journey came to an end for the both of them. The process of raising a life-bound page was expensive and torturous and while there were a lot of disadvantages to this system, the main one being that the life and death of both master and page were linked together, there were also many more advantages to this.
One of the advantages of the life-bound system was that both master and page would share the same talent. This advantage was actually most enjoyed by the page. Because it was only powerful nobles and members of the royal family in the wisteria kingdom who had naturally powerful bloodlines and talents who could practice this method. The commoners that were chosen would eventually get to possess the same level of talent as their master so that they wouldn't be left behind in their evolution path causing one to die and the other to follow.
Due to the virtue of Ruger, his life-bound page also possessed powerful talent and also awakened the equally rare and powerful Soul Destruction Lightning. This was a form of lightning that could strike and annihilate one's soul directly.
Its power was cruel and punishing!
Having their lives bound together from birth, Ruger and Vader grew to become the best of friends who would be together forever and would never betray each other. With their powerful talent, the two of them shone brightly as the twin stars of the wisteria kingdom and they became heroes and role models for the younger generation. Everywhere Ruger and Vader went, they elicited the envy and jealousy of their peers and the admiration of their seniors.
Together, Ruger and Vader could have conquered the whole firmament.
As Constantine waded through the lives of these Ruger and Vader in his dreams, he was surprised at how similar their lives were to his own and Baron's.
In their case, Ruger was very similar to Constantine's friend Baron, who was the son of one of the wealthiest men in Boston. In a sense, Baron's father was just like the Duke of Whitebrook, and Baron was the prince of the Dukedom.
As for Constantine, he was very similar to Vader, who was destined to follow Ruger his whole life.
Constantine's father was the assistant to Baron's father, and he had assumed that post from his own father, who had been the assistant to Baron's grandfather. This relationship had been going on for many generations and Constantine himself was expected to take over as Baron's assistant when he inherited his father's assets and company.
In a way, Constantines' case was just like Vader's. The two of them had no choice in who they would serve and they could only continue being with the person they were meant to be.
It was their fate...
Naturally, it wasn't as if Constantine had not tried to fight against this fate. There were times when Constantine considered running far away to another city or country so that he wouldn't have to follow in the footsteps of his father and his father's father. There was especially a time when Constantine and Baron had been kidnapped by the enemies of Baron's father. After Constantine had realized that he might have to deal with things like that often in the future, he had wanted to run away and live a different life... one of his own choosing.
But just like how Vader could not deny the life-bound contract he had with Ruger, Constantine was not able to fight his family's arrangements. Constantine could only obediently do as he was told and take care of the traumatized Baron, who refused his help completely.
Unfortunately, this was as far as the similarity between the four of them actually went. As it was with life, not all things were meant to be exactly the same and even things that were very similar would also have their own points of divergence.
Vader, who was very similar to Constantine, actually started to diverge in the same direction as Baron had.
Nobody knew why Vader did what he did or what had pushed him into acting the way he eventually did. Perhaps he had been disillusioned by the direction in which his life was heading. A life where he had no choice but to stay with the same person for an eternity and where his life was constantly threatened because it was tied to the life of another.
It could have been because of the above reasons, or maybe Vader had simply gone mad. In the end, this genius Evolver finally snapped and rebelled against his masters.
Without care for his life, Vader had declared war against the Whitebrook Dukedom and especially Ruger Whitebrook in particular.
He had slaughtered the people of the Dukedom, both innocent soldiers and civilians, as well as members of the Whitebrook royal family. In the end, the Whitebrook family could not bear to do anything to Vader because his life was tied to their heir... should anything happen to Vader, then Ruger would also be affected.
This situation had put the whole Whitebrook family in a royal bind, and their enemies had taken advantage of this to deal a heavy blow to them.
Immediately, Vader became a public target who everybody hunted. Because people knew that by killing Vader, the most talented heir of the Whitebrook would also die. This caused Ruger's life to constantly be in danger every time Vader was in a near-death situation.
In the end, the only one who could stop Vader was Ruger himself, and so he had set out to hunt him down.
The two of them had crossed countless realms in the universe and many firmament stars before eventually ending up in the void outside earth. There, the two of them had battled with all their might, which affected the small planet at their feet. It had caused a storm to tear through Earth and disaster to happen everywhere on the planet. But the two evolvers cared not for the innocent lives that were affected due to their battle.
In the end, Ruger and Vader fought until both of them were almost at death's door. That was when they both did something risky and highly dangerous.
With their lives at an end and death on the way to claim their souls, both Ruger and Vader had chosen to use a secret technique to possess other individuals. They had set their sights on two young boys who had been struggling on a beach on the planet below them and the two of them had sent their souls into the bodies of the young boys to possess them.
Those young boys were naturally Constantine and Baron.
When Constantine saw the end of Ruger's life, he was incredibly shocked... He could not believe that in the end, what he had actually been seeing all this while in his dream was the life of an actual person, and it was this person who was responsible for him being struck by lightning. Actually, it was more accurate to say that Constantine and baron had been struck by the souls of the two evolvers. it was only because of the nature of their power that their souls had appeared in the form of lightning. At the end of the day, there was nothing Constantine could do about it. Now that he knew that what he was seeing was really the life of another powerful being who really existed and not the wild musings of an overactive imagination that was created by his feelings of being trapped and wanting to break free from his fate... once Constantine realized that everything was real, he started to worry. In the end, because he was experiencing Ruger's life as if it was his own, Constantine under
The bright light of the sun filtered through the blinds of the window and entered a small hospital ward. The soft hum of the machine resounded throughout the room, leaving a faint echo in the surroundings and a cool breeze entered the room through an open window. On the only bed inside this ward, the body of a young man lay peacefully in this undisturbed environment. The time was just past noon and the sun was at its highest during this time of day. But overhead, there was an ominous dark cloud hanging in the noon sky, casting a shade of darkness on the city below it. The air was suppressive and the once-bustling city of Boston was silent, like a ghost town without a single life in it. Apart from the sound of the wind blowing through the city and the occasional ruckus caused by stray animals in the dark alleys, there was no other sound to be heard throughout the entire city. Fortunately, there were still signs of human occupation all over the city. There was still a constant supply
The nurse entered Constantine's room and pushed the trolley towards his bed. Looking at the prone figure lying silently on the bed, the nurse made her way to his side and looked down at him from above. The nurse was admiring Constantine's handsome visage with misty eyes and there was an imperceptible glint of appreciation and pity in her eyes. Looking at Constantine, who had a peaceful expression on his face as he lay quietly on the hospital bed, the nurse sighed at his misfortune. Sigh! "How tragic that this had to happen to you... you're so young, so handsome, you should be full of life and out there chasing your dreams and being the dreams of other girls. Instead, you're here alone with nothing but the cold hospital walls to keep you company." "It is really such a pity." The nurse looked at Constantine with pity for a moment before she got to work and started cleaning him up. Getting her tools from the trolley, the nurse started undressing Constantine with well-practiced hand
As soon as the nurse left Constantine's room, a shadow slipped in through the open window. This shadow was in the form of a long and slender snake-like creature. Its skin was dark red and rusty like dried blood and it had a sinister face, along with comical features. I say comical because although this creature resembled a snake of some sort; it was quite bloated and swollen like a balloon, making it look like one of those balloon creatures children liked a lot. The creature floated in the air away from the ground, but it was unknown if it was because of some innate ability it had, or perhaps because it was so bloated. These were the general characteristics of the dooms that had invaded earth from another world. Dooms were a bunch of extraterrestrial creatures with dark red and rusty skin the color of dried blood overly bloated bodies and sinister faces. Apart from these three characteristics that all Dooms shared, there were no other unified similarities between different dooms, an
As soon as the Asian girl walked into Constantine's room, she immediately frowned... For some reason, as soon as she entered, the girl felt that something was wrong. A bad feeling was creeping through her heart, and it was as if some evil presence was looking at her through the shadows. Warning bells rang continuously in the girl's head and she quickly looked around to locate where the danger was. Immediately, the girl's sharp gaze swept through the room and he immediately caught sight of the open window... Making a beeline to the window without any thought to her safety, the girl quickly looked outside, hoping to catch anything suspicious afoot. But what greeted the girl's eyes were the empty streets of the city that were as quiet as a graveyard. There was nothing outside the window that caused the girl to be greatly surprised. After taking a few more looks outside the window, the girl finally retreated inside the room. She firmly locked the windows shut tightly to make sure tha
In a penthouse suite in one of the tallest buildings that overlooked the Boston skyline... Standing by the full-length window in one of the rooms that offered a full view of the city of Boston, Constantine looked down and the sleeping city that was completely unrecognizable to him. Constantine was shirtless, and he wore only slim shorts on his body. The room was dark and the air conditioner was turned on and blowing at full intensity, making the room very cold. But despite how cold it was in the room, Constantine, who was shirtless, did not feel the cold at all. Instead, he felt like his body was on fire. There was a steady flow of electricity running along Constantine's veins, providing him with constant heat and keeping his vitals active. It had been three days since Constantine had woken up in the hospital following the attack of the doom. In these three days, Constantine had gone through a number of tests to make sure he was okay. Through the tests, Constantine was found to be
Hearing the voice that sounded in his mind, Constantine was not surprised by it at all. This was not the first time he had heard this voice in his mind. In fact, if it weren't for this voice, Constantine would not have been able to wake up at all and he would still be sleeping peacefully. When Arran had first regained consciousness, it was because the owner of this voice had spoken to him at that moment when the doom had attacked him. Before Constantine had woken up, his consciousness was hazy, and it had been floating in a space filled with clouds. Those clouds flowed freely in the air, forming many bizarre shapes that looked were actually pieces of Constantine's and Ruger's memories. At that time, the voice had spoken to Constantine saying, "Hey kid, you've been sleeping for so long already, don't you think it's about time you woke up? If you don't, you will die, you know!" The voice had not been loud, but the words he had spoken had impacted Constantine's hazy consciousness, sen
"Heh!" Ruger Whitebrook scoffed when Constantine asked that question. Ruger looked at Constantine like he was looking at an idiot. In fact, he actually insulted Constantine straight to his face as he replied to him. "Idiot!" "What do you think this looks like?" "Obviously, when I was trying to destroy your soul in order to possess your body, something went wrong and I was the one who ended up with his soul almost destroyed and fused to yours. As for why this happened, don't ask me because I don't know. If I did, I would have definitely prevented it from happening and I wouldn't be in this mess." "Also, before you ask, I don't know how to resolve this issue. Like before, if I have a solution, I would have already resolved this issue, so I wouldn't have to put up with an ignorant mortal like you." Ruger's words were harsh and direct. He didn't feel guilty at all as he insulted Constantine and he even mentioned how he wanted to possess Constantine's body with a straight face. It wa
With his forehead covered in a nervous sweat, the leader watched as the rift turned into a black dot in space before finally closing completely. As soon as the rift closed, the leader’s shoulders dropped heavily as he breathed a deep sigh of relief. He suddenly felt weak at this moment as the pressure he was feeling in his heart was liberated, making him feel like he would suddenly collapse on the floor. But his training prevented him from doing so. Without the heavy weight of the rift hanging over his head, the leader could finally relax and breathe easily. Taking a moment to regain his composure, the leader turned to captain Keith and reported. “Sir, the rift had finally been closed.”“Good,” captain Keith responded. He continued, “Station a few men to keep watch here and report anything that happens. We don’t want the rift being opened again from the other side. In a while, this place will be turned into a quarantined zone as we wait for the tech guys to arrive and give this p
The leader hurried to close the rift, which consisted of detonating a set of small special grenades in the small room.On opposite sides of the rift, there were two tall pillar-like objects emitting pulsing light that shine on the dark rift. These two objects were spatial anchors... a kind of stabilizer that was used to maintain an open rift to prevent it from closed prematurely. Like I said before, natural rifts were more stable and could remain open for a very long time without closing. Instead of worrying about keeping a natural rift open, one would worry instead about getting it too close. On the other hand, an artificial rift was difficult to maintain, so stabilizers were needed to keep it open. Human research on space was very slow, and they hadn’t reached the point where they could open and close rifts in other worlds easily. The spatial anchors were a product of genius that had accidentally blossomed to fruition. It was with this anchor technology that the humans were confid
With one last look at Constantine, the leader finally stepped through the rift. In as much as he was reluctant to leave, the leader knew that staying would not help at all. Instead, it would bring more trouble to Constantine.Who told him to be weak and that he couldn’t lend his strength to Constantine? For that matter, whose fault was it that Earth was too weak to fight against the doom? There was nobody to blame, and they could only blame themselves. In any case, it wasn’t like the leader’s troubles were over. Waiting on the other side of the rift was a whole other set of problems that the leader would have to deal with...As soon as the leader came face to face with his superior. This was a man with the body of a giant. Standing at more than two meters tall, with large burly arms like the barrel of a tank, shoulders as broad as vinyl, and a hulking frame that towered over everybody else, dwarfing them in his shadow. This person was the superior officer in charge of the rescue miss
The leader’s face paled terribly when he saw the twenty-meter-tall doom still standing after taking that powerful lightning ball and coming out unfazed. He thought, ‘This is the end!’When the leader thought that he would be flattened, not meat paste in the next moment, his eyes opened wide in fear as he supported Constantine with his body. The leader's eyes were looking forward in a daze as he awaited his inevitable end. But after waiting for a few seconds, nothing happened. Shocked, the leader looked at the twenty-meter-tall doom in the distance, only to see that it was standing still without moving at all. Puzzled, the leader paid attention to it. That was when he noticed something he hadn’t done before. As the twenty-meter-tall doom stood silently in place, its dune-like body seemed to be loosening as sand flowed down to the desert continuously. Seeing this state, a single thought entered the leader’s mind...“It’s injured!”Once this thought entered his mind, the leader was ecs
The twenty-meter-tall doom finally revealed itself from underneath the sand. This was the first time the leader was seeing it and it was as shocking as he expected it to be. Figure-wise, the twenty-meter-tall doom was no different from the rest of the dooms. It still had the same dull red skin color that was like rust or dried blood and it possessed the same bloated body. All of these were common features of the creatures known as dooms. Still, compared to the other dooms, there were a few differences between them, the most obvious of which was the twenty-meter height that this menace stood. Another different feature was that, unlike the other dooms that possessed a perfect physical structure, the twenty-meter-tall doom seemed more like a mass of sand packed together in a single cluster. Its body was made up entirely of grains of sand that flowed constantly. The twenty-meter-tall doom was like a giant walking dune, with no fixed physical form except for the overall structure that
Bzzt! Bzzt!A powerful ball of lightning floated inches above Constantine’s head, giving off buzzing sounds of electricity as it hung suspended in the air. A layer of sweat covered Constantine’s face as exhaustion threatened to send him to his knees. Constantine’s arms were like lead, heavy, and it took all of his willpower to keep them upright to support the lightning ball. Hu!Resisting the urge to wipe the sweat from his eyes, Constantine stared dead ahead at the threat coming his way. The lightning ball above him had a diameter of five meters and it had taken almost all his power to condense it. Its power was naturally great, and it carried a shocking mite that was enough to scare a ten-meter-tall doom into retreating. But despite this, Constantine was clear that his lightning ball was not enough to stop the menace that was targeting him. A twenty-meter-tall doom! This should be the strongest doom that any human had ever encountered. Nothing was known about this doom. Probably
Run? The soldiers didn’t need Constantine to tell them before they did so. The sheer commotion from what was coming was greater than anything they had ever seen before. Rich experience from exploring the doom world for a year had thought these hardened soldiers that when faced with the unknown... the best decision was always to run. Just as Constantine’s voice fell, the leader ordered his men, “All soldiers fall back to the rift immediately. Abandon everything else and fall back!”Following the leader’s orders, the soldiers quickly turned their backs on the dooms they were confronting and ran back to the rift as fast as possible. Immediately, it was chaos all over the desert. Not only were the soldiers trying to escape, but the dooms were also in a mess as their formation completely collapsed and they ran all over the place in a panic. The soldiers were surprised to see that the dooms seemed to be more panicked than they were. Normally in situations where people abandoned all resis
After breaking through the blockade of the ten-meter-tall dooms, Constantine continued speeding his way towards the rift. Along the way, he also encountered more fierce resistance. But it wasn't anything he couldn't handle.Dooms below four meters in height could not stop Constantine at all and while it was tough to deal with four-meter and five-meter-tall dooms, it wasn't as hard as passing through a blockade of ten-meter-tall dooms so it was a piece of cake for Constantine. There were a few ten-meter-tall dooms that tried to stop him. But they did not form a blockade like the previous dooms. then the blockade was formed by not less than five ten-meter-tall dooms gathered together in a line. Due to their large size and the fact that Constantine didn't want to waste time by going around them, those dooms were able to block Constantine's way forward.Thankfully, apart from them, the other ten-meter tall dooms Constantine encountered was only in teams of two or three... nothing Constant
Ooouuu!Following a loud bellow, the ten-meter-tall dooms attacked. One of them shot its large hand forward like a boulder and slapped at Constantine, intending to crush him to bits.Bang! The blow came fast and suddenly and landed on the ground, causing a large explosion to erupt, blowing large clumps of sand everywhere like pellets of stray bullets.Although the dooms with their large and cumbersome bodies were not agile, they were able to instantaneously erupt with overwhelmingly crushing force in the blink of an eye. If one was not prepared, then they would be crushed to meat patty before they even knew it.Fortunately, Constantine was prepared. Before the doom could even land a hit on him, Constantine had already jumped out of harm's way, letting the doom's huge fist to land harmlessly on the ground.Constantine watched as the desert sand was split by the punch and a huge crater formed where he had previously been standing just a moment ago.Constantine's body chilled as he thoug
