Jacob's. Next Day. Saturday.
~Evelyn~
"History of the past."
She muttered, under her breath as she opened the laptop. The laptop she had made her parents pay for at all cost. Twas just a day into living with her sister and there hadn't been any cause of alarm. Aside last night when the both of them had to fight over who should prepare the meal and wash the dishes, immediately after the Devin had left. It went like this.
******************
"Mom and Dad sent you here to take care of me and make me strong and not suck the remaining strength out of me."
Evelyn had scoffed, stepping forward,
"I'm the guest here. Do you have an idea what I left hanging back at home while coming to this place? You should treat me like as guest at least for the first day, then if I wish, I could help out later. By the way, before now, weren't you Jacob's maid?"
Iseult's eyes had widened,
"What did you just say?"
But Evelyn had turned, running away towards her own room; a guest's room.
"Wait for me, you little wench. I'll break every bone in you. No wonder you don't have a boyfriend."
Iseult was breathing heavily at the front of her door; Evelyn had entered into the guest's room and slammed the door.
"And what did you do with yours, Mrs marriage counselor? In short, if we were to go fist to fist, I'm sure I'd pluck some of those teeth that make you beautiful."
Iseult had grunted, groaning in rage,
"I'll let it pass. After all, I'm the eldest."
She had pretended to had left. But as the door to Evelyn room open suddenly with Evelyn asking,
"Has she gone?"
She had lunged at Evelyn's door and almost grabbed her. She had grabbed few of her fingers and did the best she could before Evelyn could set herself free and jam the door again.
"Pumpkin head."
Evelyn had cussed, groaning. Iseult had left the place triumphantly. Giggling. The same sound, the baby would make.
****************
"That nut head."
Evelyn smiled as the memory waned out. Iseult had left earlier than expected this morning. She had said she had someone important to look after at the hospital. And before leaving, she had told Evelyn that breakfast was ready. That was always it. Fight at night, at ease in the morning. But that didn't mean she wouldn't get her revenge.
"Now, let's see."
She checked the time on her iPhone 8; a phone she saved her ass off to buy. Twas just 9am. She had had the breakfast and really had nothing to do.
The memory of what Mr Substitute had said to them yesterday kept zooming in and out. Since she was the curious one who always wanted to find why all the spoons in the house was missing and solved a mystery case of a stray dog in the community which eventually happened to had been stolen by the blonde's boyfriend. Since that day, with the feeling that came with that honor, she had made sure to give her best to unveiling mysteries.
And by the way, she had the deceptive cute and cool face. She muttered,
"November 9. Today's date."
Now raising her voice,
"Now let's see what happened in the past on any November 9, related to Detroit."
She clicked the arrow key after typing, and it went spinning. After few moments of scrolling through, her left index finger hovered over the mouse,
"Terror of the eight? Detroit?"
She scrolled down to the base of the article and checked the date of its publication.
"January 18, 1999."
She sighed, looking to the side wall,
"But when did this happen for real?"
She scanned through the article again,
"December 8, 1745."
Her eyes bulged at the socket,
"Hell! That's some old-time."
She paused for a while. Then suddenly,
"Let's see what comes out for Winchester. If Detroit has a dark past, let's see what Iseult's so revered city brings up."
She did a quick screenshot of the important part of that article and exit the page. She typed in,
HORROR PASTS IN WINCHESTER, VIRGINIA, USA.
She expected with pleasure as the internet ball rolled in response.
"Fucking WiFi."
She cussed.
"Yes!"
She whooped as the page suddenly popped up. But suddenly, the door to the house opened. She flinched, turning in the direction,
"Hey, beautiful Evelyn. Where's your sister?"
She closed the laptop at once without shutting it down. She cussed under breath,
"Doesn't he have a work. If he would be like, I'll be quick to kick him into the blacklist; Jacob's league."
She stood up and walked off the small dinning place to the circle of sofa as he edged further and settled into one of the sofas. He turned to her,
"Sorry for the bother."
"You can say that again."
She muttered under her breath. He quizzed,
"You said?"
She got to the adjacent sofa and settled in too. She shot him a quick smile and corrected,
"I said, you can save all the cane... That's like some Highschool thingy."
He smiled, looking away. She sneered.
"My TV had a breakdown when I wanted to tune in to the news channel. Could you put on Iseult's TV, I will be here but for a while. Immediately after the news, I'll leave. I'd called someone to repair mine. He took it away to fix it."
She was tempted to say, Can't you just buy a new one, but she tamed the urge and replied,
"Iseult's is broken also. Too bad we can't watch the news."
"Too bad."
He stood up suddenly, then he looked in the direction of the dinning table and saw the laptop.
"Could we use the laptop please, we could just connect to the online counterpart."
She sprung to her feet,
"No-- absolutely not... yes... no"
He chuckled,
"It's fine if you don't want me around. I'd be dumb if I say I didn't notice it. Probably I interrupted something when I walked in."
He paused, a smile sweeping across his face,
"I'll go now."
As he made to leave, she called at him,
"I watched the news already. A priest was killed yesterday in the same fashion. So, the cops said. But what fashion? What has been happening here?"
He halted and turned to her,
"Your sister said it has something to do with a baby being chased by some persons, but I don't quite agree with her."
"Iseult is dumb. Even she knows that."
He took thoughtful steps back towards her,
"Hearing you say harsh words about her make my blood burn... but you're her sister."
"So, you love her?"
He chuckled again,
"If I would say that word, Evelyn... the first time would be in her ears not behind her."
She sneered, conspicuously rolling her eyes at him,
"Whatever. So, tell me. About the baby, mysterious baby and the chaser. What's the form of death?"
He sat on the arm of a chair,
"The head of the people burst open. Then I ask myself, if truly the baby was the one hunted, why would the so called person burst the head of random men...? First, twas a construction worker, then Jacob, and now a priest. Who knows who the next person is?"
Evelyn thought for a while.
"How about if there's something close to sense in Iseult's argument? What if the person killing, kills the person who had once had a contact with the baby. So that the baby wouldn't leave a trace of its existence after it has been caught?"
He nodded his head,
"Your reason is pretty much beyond your years. Though it's not 60% percent correct. But I could make a use for you."
Her gaze tuned,
"A use for me? What are you? Like a detective, Interpol, FBI secret agent?"
He chuckled and stood up,
"Keep watching the news. Let's see what the future brings."
He headed towards the door as she watched him go. Suddenly she mumbled,
"A chased baby in the past..."
She rushed towards her PC.

Along the Cemetery Road. 8PM.~Iseult~
"Eaten anything yet?"
She said over the phone, her flashlight lighting the way.
"Don't always be sassy, Evelyn."
She grunted at the reply.
"Since you have enough strength to talk, fed on that till I get home. I'm already on my way."
She hung the call. She took a deep sigh,
"That watery mouth."
She cussed, walking towards the expressway, she was almost halfway through the cemetery road.
"If someone sees me walking through here almost every night, they'd think I'm a haunting spirit or have some supernatural power. They won't know that I'm just a fan of solitude and gloom. I love walking through the dark. A strange feeling of finding something somewhere. Like my ancestors loved the dark."
Suddenly, she had a coo and a giggle.
"Wait. What was that?"
She tried to listen and the noise came again; a coo and a giggle. She turned around, but she couldn't find a thing, her flashlight doing its best.
"This direction."
She pointed and she started edging in the direction of where the coo and giggle was coming from.
After few minutes of walking, she got to a mound of earth. She saw the baby, it was pushing and throwing the sand with its small hands by and by. As though it was trying to make a channel that'll take him back into the pit.
"Hey, little wonder. What are you doing here?"
She walked even closer.
"Come let's get you out of here. I should had looked for you earlier but I was broken down by Jacob's death."
She bent and picked the baby up.
"Come let's take you home."
The baby cooed and giggled in her hands. She put it to her breast and began to walk out of the dark space,
"We'll catch those men who'd been hunting you."
She promised as the baby giggled.
She took it with her home.
Getting Home. ~Iseult and Evelyn~ "Where did you see a baby?" Evelyn barked at her sister, Iseult, as soon the latter stepped into the house. Twas 8:45 PM. Iseult had stopped quickly at the kid stores to get a pair of clothes for the closely naked baby. Since she discovered that she was a girl, she'd bought a small gown for the infant. Iseult stepped into the sitting room, striding towards the sofa, the baby clutched to her breasts, her left arm pushing the baby's bum up. "Have you eaten?" She tried to dismiss the question. But Evelyn wouldn't take the bait, "Don't give me that bullshit, Iseult. Where did you see a baby. Did you give birth to any child when Shit-cob was alive? Why didn't you tell any of us, not even mom or dad know about it." Iseult went to sit on the one-seater sofa, but Evelyn strutted towards her and stood at her front, in akimbo. "I don't have the
The Next Morning."I had a dream."Evelyn said, walking down the stairs as Devin hurried after her."Evelyn wait."He called but she wasn't going to. Immediately she caught a sight of her suitcase, she went for it and picked it up. She hurried towards the door, opened it and strode out."At lease tell me what this dream is all about. You can't just wake up in the morning, bathe and just take off. Where are you going to?"He was standing at her front. She threw her face away in indifference. She spoke,"I'm going home. There's no point staying here any longer. Plus it's a Sunday. I have to go to school tomorrow."Devin nodded his head and moved closer to her."Those are all reasonable. You should go home of course. But you can't expect me to send you off just after you said you had a dream. And come to think of it, I know you have every reason to be mad at your sis
The Next Morning.~Evelyn~"Huh?"She turned in bed. It seemed like she was hearing a continuous noise in her subconsciousness. She turned again, covering her face in the duvet. But the noise and muffled sound in her head kept getting louder and louder. She succumbed to the urge and opened her eyes. Then did she realize that the noise wasn't in her subconsciousness but real. In fact it was coming right outside her room. In the house."What's that noise?"She sat up suddenly."Did they turned up the volume of the TV that loud?"She grunted but then listened closely. It seemed to be more than that. She could be sure."Isn't that mom's voice?"She rolled down the bed and hurried to the door without wearing flip-flops. She pressed her left ear to the door,"Why is she shouting that loudly?"She complained? She recalled what had happened yesterday. They
Later the day.~Devin, the elder~"Please answer your phone. Please Iseult."Devin, the elder dialed the number of Iseult as the recent one was screened. As he put the phone to his left ear, his right hand was waving down a taxi.",Drive downtown. I'll wave you stop when I get there."He looked up quickly from the phone at the backseat at the driver of the taxi who drove off immediately."And please drive as quickly as you could. It's very urgent."He added as the driver increased the velocity. He looked back to his phone. Since all his calls were screened. He resolved for the better option. He sent a text,WHERE DID YOU KEEP YOUR PHONE, BABE? GO HOME RIGHT NOW AND HIDE THE BABY. JUST DO AS I SAID, WE'LL TALK WHEN I GET THERE. LET'S HOPE WE'RE THAT LUCKY. ON MY WAY.And after he pushed the send icon and the message was delivered, the taxi suddenly pulled ov
Same.~The Four~"My mom called me. She was worried about me and told me about the case to scare me to come back home. And she warned that whatever baby I see, no matter how cute, I shouldn't stare right into its face."They all stared at Devin, the younger, as though he was some priest from the Common Era. Evelyn was yet standing at the back of the large sofa, Devin, the elder, seated on the single sofa. Iseult standing in the middle of the set sofa with the baby in her hand. The baby whose slit throat had healed up immediately, but leaving a scar at where the impact was registered. The baby had cooed to sleep.Devin, the elder, said,"If what you said is right. Then, it means that we have two strange babies. And while one is obviously dangerous, the other is considerably harmful."Iseult took her turn, the baby gently clasped to her breast,"Does that mean that the baby who killed Jacob, the priest a
At the Police Station.~The four~"Please point us to the Sheriff please."Devin, the elder called as he led the three into the police station, the baby in his arms, the side of its face pressed to his chest."He's not on seat. How can I help you?"The Deputy sheriff with the name tag, Floyd Marvin said, standing at the door of the sheriff's office."We'd love to address this to the Sheriff directly. This is quite a delicate matter."Marvin's eyes strayed from the baby in Devin's chest to Iseult and Evelyn. As soon as he restored his gaze on Devin, the elder, he asked,"I don't think we have the time for this. The sheriff is busy with the case of the hideous deaths.""What do you mean by this?"Evelyn attacked and Marvin laughed,"Of course family matter. The state is on cautious turn now. The last thing we want is a family matter here."Evel
On the way.~The four~"That was stupid."That was the first group of words to be spoken after ten minutes of silence since they'd been in the car. And twas Devin's words and car. Devin, the elder. The cops had taken the baby from them since it's now a threat to the citizens. And has been isolated, monitored by shifts of Police officers. Though each police officer monitoring was sure not to stare at the baby for long. They only take a glance and look away top quickly.Iseult was almost locked away for harboring such threat in her house but Devin, the elder had pleaded with the Sheriff to let her off the hook, claiming that there were a lot of things tied to the events. He had promised the Sheriff to get to the root of it all, but all he could do at that moment was scold Iseult with words."What did you say?"Iseult turned to him. She was seated next to him at the front. D
On the way.~The four~"Okay, let's get all our points clear."Devin Snr started. He was yet the one driving. Devin Jnr was seated beside him, Iseult and Evelyn at the back seat.Amongst all the positive things happening at the moment was the calm atmosphere. Twas rather different from the tense and worked up like the previous day's."There are two babies."He looked through the rearview mirror after those words at the sisters. What was he expecting? Probably they were going to add to what he had said?He continued when he got no precise reaction,"One is in the care of the Sheriff back in Winchester. The other is on a run, catching the cruise of a serial killer.""Baby on the run?"Devin Jnr teased, but nobody fleshed the joke. Devin Snr looked back at the sisters again. At the moment, Evelyn had her head on the right shoulder of Iseult. Quite a remote wonder you'd thi
