44. Gun and Shield

Xavier was showered with sweats, his head felt the heat of running, from his thighs to the scalp of his head.

With heavy breaths that sounded like raspy air slipping out from the narrow pipe, he put the little girl into the back seat of the car.

Squeak.

The leather seats made squeaking and creaking sounds as the girl hurriedly placed herself safely inside the car. Her adrenaline hasn’t subsided yet and her enlarged pupils showed it.

Xavier looked down and met the girl’s frightened and confused gaze.

“Stay there and…”

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Bullets tore the wall of the large warehouses and sent broken glass flying into the air. Xavier covered himself, crossing his arms and then snapped out when he realized that he should leave this place as soon as possible.

“Duck!” he shouted to the girl.
