Besieged (Book One): Rise of the Misfit Finnian Vs Caesar
It was less than two hours before the trial would end…Finnian had planned to keep a low profile, but that didn’t go as planned. It was even during this period that he encountered quite some students; most of whom still had their communicators. It was a pity their luck ran out when they met Finnian. Of course, he was looked down on at first, but as the fight progressed, the outcome became clear as day. Most of these people were also beaten to the point where they bled profusely. The reason stemmed from them wagging their mouth with no self-control, and he, in turn, lost control and went wild on them.Finnian had wandered into a grassland where the grasses were in shades of green and yellow. Stone heaps dotted the landscape like small stone mounds. Finnian had no idea what part of the island he was, but he wasn’t too bothered about it. His goal at the moment was to rest somewhere; he had just concluded a fight not so long ago.Finnian lay down taking in a deep breath, “Finally, some pe

This was a long-awaited fight for both parties, hence, they couldn’t afford to not go all out. In fact, Finnian was ahead in that regard. He had seen Caesar fight before, so he more or less knew how recklessly he fought. ‘Caesar packs a lot of strength in his attacks; I can’t afford to take a hit in my state.’ Finnian wasn’t scared of fighting Caesar, but fighting him in his current state. This would be highly disadvantageous to him because Caesar’s ability excelled in defense. Even if a Cyph’s power wasn’t active, their physical enhancement represented it in some ways. For Caesar, even though his ability wasn’t activated, his bodily defense would still be astonishing, and his attacks might almost be as powerful as Benji’s. Finnian might have recovered a bit, but it was far from enough to withstand a hit from Caesar. In this regard, one hit might be enough to take him out! Caesar had long shed any cordiality, if any, from when he sent that boulder flying toward Finnian. If he could a

After successfully dodging more attacks of that nature, Finnian could now easily predict Caesar’s attack pattern. They seemed crude, but they happened to come from tricky angles that aimed at a vital point on Finnian’s left side. Finnian’s skills alone proved that he was no newbie in the art of hand-to-hand combat, and this knowledge was rather convenient at a time like this. He could tell where Caesar was trying to hit, and if he succeeded, it would end up a one-hit K.O. with him, Caesar, being the winner. Finnian would rather eat sand than let that happen, not while Caesar was his prime target in the trial.Caesar was undoubtedly getting exasperated as he failed again and again. If Finnian would rather eat sand than let Caesar win, then Caesar would rather swallow magma than let Finnian take the win. This was now a matter of pride, and whoever had the skills to back it up wins. But Caesar could feel his chances of winning slipping through his fingers; except, he uses his ability. Hi

Taking a few steps back, Caesar’s plan was indeed tricky to read. His last-moment movement would have confused anyone, leaving them momentarily stunned with no time to defend or dodge. The same went for Finnian. He was taken by surprise by the sudden change in Caesar’s movement. Nonetheless, the plan remained the same; attack from his blind side.Finnian had approached his opponent with this thought at the back of his mind and had put forth a lot to stimulate his senses on his left side to react quickly to the threat of attack. What stunned him more wasn’t the pattern of the attack itself, but the proximity with which the attack was executed. For a moment, he’d thought maybe Caesar was indeed going to attack from his field of vision.Alas, it was just as he initially thought. But even Finnian had to admit that with how close Caesar was, he had escaped that kick by only a hair’s length. He ducked low, letting the kick fly over his head, while he struck a punch to his opponent’s other k

The students were astounded by what they saw and failed horribly to hide their expressions though they tried. Everyone guessed that the elites might go all out when fighting themselves, but they didn’t think it would be to this level. “What on earth happened to them?” Someone randomly asked under their breaths. This, however, was the question everyone had, the commissioners included. Benji, who was known for his immense strength and intimidating presence, was riddled with purple patches; and those were the parts exposed. These purple patches were no doubt a result of being punched and beaten. However, just who could confront Benji to that point? Cruze? The lad was already inside the aircraft. And he looked nothing like this when he appeared. Some even said he didn’t look like someone who fought anyone at all. Apart from him, there wasn’t anyone known to them who could fight Benji, much more inflict this much damage on the latter. Although he tried to hide it, everyone could tell tha

Back at headquarters, the females were already assembled in the Centurion headquarters. They had kick-started the counting and recording of the results. As a matter of fact, they were about to conclude. As expected, their elites had the best results. The results were according to the number of communicators collected by a person. As stated by the rule, even if your opponent has claimed many communicators before meeting you, if you win, you’re only expected to claim your opponent’s communicator and nothing else. This made things more challenging for the students, and challenging them was Centurion’s ultimate goal. The students were gathered in the same hall they were in before the trial started. Each of them was to step into a small station and place the communicators they had gathered on a platform in the station. A commissioner stood by the side to take the communicators one after the other and upload their info into the system, then the wide screen monitor in the hall would display

It was difficult to explain what was going on and to understand, the ones to ask were the students involved. But everyone had to wait till the counting was done. A time passed and another ten were called. Now, among this ten, half had nothing to submit as well! The highest number submitted so far was six communicators! The students weren’t deliberately placed in awkward positions, but only out of the nature of the situation. Even the commissioners were shocked at the results of the trial so far. Currently, a total of 12 communicators have been retrieved. At this time, the next person called sparked everyone’s attention. “Cruze Shelton!” the commissioner called out.“Finally, an elite.” The crowd's attention was spurred, filled with enthusiasm for the result of an elite of the male category. “Let’s see what their elite can do,” the one who said this was among the female category.Cruze walked up to the platform and emptied a small pouch. A significantly bigger cluster of communicators

The crowd buzzed again when Evan was called. Another elite was called, what would be his result? As they wondered this, the lad in question stepped forward. A lad with a bandaged nose and swollen chin walked up to the station and emptied his pouch on the platform available.“What in the world happened to him?” This question fell out of a girl’s mouth mistakenly, but it likewise was the question of everyone’s mind. The boy next to her shook his head, “No one knows. In fact, Cruze aside, the other elites look like they fought some kind of wild beast. And they wouldn’t say a word about it to anyone.”Everyone was surprised to see how bedraggled and haggard the boys were looking. One might not help but ask if this was the same trial they’ve conducted over the years or if something added to it. It got to the point where the elites were wounded to this extent.“Could it be Caesar?” the girl asked. It was no private matter that Caesar and Evan never crossed the same path without a fight ensu

District Chief Of Human Research Affairs
Finnian’s body went cold. It was akin to being seen through by the principal. Finnian was known as an unrepentant dawdler in everything. He’d always move slowly and was often taunted by Martin for being slower than a snail. Unfortunately, this habit of his affected his punctuality in school. There were times when he’d come to class after three classes were over. And some other times he’d get to school during lunchtime. By now, every commissioner working in the school had noted this behavior of his and reported it to the principal.Finnian didn’t know what to say to defend himself and simply replied,“I understand sir. I’ll do my best from now on.”The principal nodded,“That’s fine. That will be it for our little meeting. I hope to see more outstanding qualities in the next trial.”The principal beamed a smile as he sent the students off,“Seek the commissioners for more details.”Outside the office, Finnian felt relieved the meeting was over. It was sort of embarrassing being scolded

Seeing the girls enlightened faces made the commissioner smile more. Stephanie was more convinced by it than anyone else. “Of course, that has to be it!” she took a deep breath, “I’ve been thinking about this for a while; it felt like my head was going to explode.” Stephanie wasn’t the only one who shared this sentiment. They all exchanged their views about it, as the commissioner listened. “However,” her voice trailed off, drawing the attention of the students once again. “However, what?” Stephanie asked. “However,” the commissioner smiled. “It could also be that Finnian’s enhancement is as good as his ability. He could be one of those who tend to keep their abilities private. It’s not really against the rules to do so, hence we have quite a few of them.” Saying this, she turned to one of the elites, Emma Graham. “Emma, you’re both in the same class. Maybe there’s something about him you noticed that we haven’t.” Emma was surprised at being unexpectedly called upon. She thought b

“Quit your fussing,” Benji said coolly. “It’s not the end of the world if he joins us.”“Hey, whose side are you on?” Caesar fumed.“There are no sides to this. Compared to us, the girls did a better job. We no doubt messed up in the trial. The sooner you accept that the better.”Benji was no sage, but he tended to be a realist when necessary. He too had lost to Finnian but that he wasn’t fuming like Caesar didn’t mean he wasn’t hurt too. Caesar had nothing to say. Or rather, anything he said would be of no use. He gnashed his teeth silently and grumbled inside.…The winner of the female category, Feigh Omah, was also undergoing treatment in the elite ward. Her mates weren’t resentful toward her but they more or less faked smiles to ease up the atmosphere. Feigh was a decent fighter even among the elite, so although some of them had their misgivings, it was easier to accept nonetheless.“The boys are having a hard time it seems…” said Tania, one of the elites. After effect
“Hey,” Finnian piped up. “I’ve got a question for you.” He turned to Joel. “What is it?” “I’ve fought both you and Evan and you both excel in speed. But I’ve been wondering for a while now… who’s faster between you both?” It was just as Finnian had said, both Joel and Evan excelled in terms of speed. And although he asked this question, he knew deep down who was more problematic to deal with. Simulating his fight with Joel and Evan, Finnian found it a bit surprising that Joel posed more of a threat than the elite! Joel’s physique would throw anyone off about what enhancements he excelled in. Only by fighting him would one come to figure out that this meaty fella wasn’t in any way to be trifled with. Speed aside, Finnian also felt that Joel was a good fighter too. For someone his, he was both flexible and agile. The same thing went for Evan. Finnian simulated his fight with the elite, and though the latter was quite something, he fell short of Joel in some ways. In terms of speed,

How'd You Do It?
Martin walked over to Finnian’s bed. He too had a couple of scratches that required attention, but not as bad as his friend. “You look horrible,” He snickered.“Yeah well… you’re fat.” Finnian couldn’t come up with a retort and snapped with that instead.Martin slightly frowned, “That’s low… even for you.”“You didn’t give me much of a choice. Besides, aren’t you supposed to be on bed rest, what are you doing here?”“I heard you were in a terrible condition and wanted to check if you were dead yet,” Martin shrugged. “Also, unlike you, I don’t badly need bed rest; I can move around as I want.”Finnian faked a smile, “Good for you, now leave me alone. With you around, I don’t think I can recover at all.”And before Finnian could finish his sentence, Martin already made himself comfortable by perching on a corner of his bed. Finnian already expected this and didn’t bother to struggle.“Sure, make yourself comfortable. It’s not like I need the space or anything…” said Finnian sarcastical

Declared Winners
The students were awe-struck by Finnian’s performance in the trial. The crowd unconsciously shifted for the lad to walk through; not a single opposition. With how silent everyone was, even the slightest whisper was audible. Finnian’s expression was cut from stone; he spared no one a single glance. Bystanders obviously would think he was putting on an attitude, not knowing he currently wasn’t seeing properly. His left eye was wounded and covered with bandages while he couldn’t see with the other without his glasses. No matter the reason for it, all added to the intense bearing of his performance. Even if some people had something to say, they couldn’t say a word. Getting to his initial position, he was suddenly greeted by a slight punch to his wounded shoulder. His eyes contorted from the pain as he angrily turned to see who had done it. “What, you want to fight me?” Martin had a wicked smile hanging on his face. Seeing it was his friend, Finnian’s anger subsided, or rather; the la

The one arguing with Doyle wanted to laugh but restrained himself, “You’re taking this too personal; that’s why. It’s no one’s fault the elites are that strong. It makes no difference if you hate them or not.”“You’re not getting the point,” Doyle cut in. “The elites are strong indeed, but why can’t someone else be strong as well?” This was his argument. The crowd around them was stirred when Doyle said this. Most of them were passive toward the elites and Doyle’s statement pointed their minds in another direction. The mixed crowd was provoked into an atmosphere of intense arguments, to the point where the commissioners had to step in to maintain decorum.“Please remain silent, the counting isn’t over.” Commissioner Glenn announced. This was supposed to quell the intense atmosphere, but the reverse happened. Not yet done? Who else was left? The commissioners stepped in again and the noise died down. Over at the counting station, Finnian had a look of indifference, but truth be told, h

Taking The Center Stage
Finnian’s result so far was indeed intimidating compared to that of his peers. The female category loathed him still, but they had to admit that he had taken them unawares. He was among those least expected to achieve much in the trial, and you couldn’t blame them for thinking like this. When it came to bulk physical appearances, Finnian was without a doubt at the bottom of the list. The few times he participated in school sports was a disaster. He never even made it past tryouts in most cases. One time, he tried participating in a race but his weights dragged him down and his team lost. That was the very last time he was seen near anything sporty.Teenagers had a nasty way of spreading rumors and dragging someone’s name into the mud. Finnian was the butt of all jokes for almost an entire school year. Although this didn’t lead to him being bullied, as that was against the rules, it still hurt to be overlooked by your peers. Finnian did well to develop a thick skin to all the comments

The Counting Continues
The crowd became increasingly agitated but soon became calm because another name had popped up on the screen. The counting continued!Everyone had something to say but swallowed it to not make a fuss out of nothing. After all, it wasn’t a crime if Finnian’s skill and raw combat prowess could get him this far. Some thought he cheated but even they knew that was near impossible. Anyone who could pull it off might be seen as the greatest mastermind of all time. The eleventh name was a rather promising student and the one who had been Finnian’s opponent in the simulation, Joel Adric. The kid named Joel can be considered one of the few students who drew the attention of the organization besides the elite and special class. His records so far drew Centurion’s attention because, in terms of speed, there wasn’t anyone who could match up to him, except for Evan. And even at that, Centurion couldn’t conclude who the fastest was between them. Also, in terms of combat prowess, he was among the fi
