Ravenwood met an unprecedented change 2 years ago. Grey clouds, churning like that of a thunderstorm, suddenly filled every inch of the sky above the city. Everyone in the city was stunned to see this, as there weren’t any prior signs of a storm, but soon noticed that some people started to feel drowsy, and later drifted to sleep fell. The rest who were awake went into panic mode because no matter how hard they tried, they simply couldn’t do anything to wake those who were asleep. The clouds hovered in the sky for 4 hours and after, disappeared the same way they appeared. However, the real change came when afterward, the people who had passed out started to awaken to abilities. Under further study of this phenomenon, it was discovered that these people had their DNA’s altered granting them numerous abilities.
The incident heralded the dawn of a new era for Ravenwood. However, though some people had these new abilities, a slightly bigger number of them didn’t. Now, the city had to adjust to people and the super-powered people living together. Predictively, the rate of crime and clashes sky-rocketed during this period, and soon enough, it became a war between the regular people and these super-powered people, plunging the city into infernal chaos.
After months of deliberation, the authorities sought to control the situation by passing a directive to establish Ravenwood as a containment zone for these humans with abilities to further study this phenomenon. But before they could give the directive, a colossal organization, called Centurion appeared and appealed to oversee the affairs of these humans with abilities. However, the specifics of the discussion between this organization and the authorities remained unknown till today. Even the press was left in the dark of everything that occurred in Ravenwood, and the few that insisted on finding answers were met with various obstructions, even as some of them went suddenly went silent. The news released was that the authorities perceived Centurion capable of overseeing the affairs of the humans with abilities, thereby granting them full authority. The organization then gave these super-powered humans the code name, Cyph, and to avoid further conflicts, the ordinary people in Ravenwood were relocated to other cities to begin new lives, while Cyphs weren’t allowed to leave Ravenwood without a special permit from the organization and under heavy surveillance from the authorities, and that was if they could leave in the first place. In other words, they were isolated from the rest of the world.
…
11-year-old Gene Finnian was a young boy just like any other in Ravenwood, but the incident two years ago forever changed his life. He was among those granted abilities after the incident two years ago and being the only one in his family acknowledged as a Cyph, he had to remain in Ravenwood while his family was relocated. Since that time, though it could be said that Cyphs were being looked after, it didn’t change the fact that he was alone in Ravenwood.
Finnian had just joined Ravenwood High school this year, automatically joining middle school for the first time. It was a typical experience for every freshman, and one had to remember that the Ravenwood of yesteryear wasn’t the Ravenwood of today. But even at that, it was slightly more distressing for Finnian. The reason was unknown nor did he want to explain that to anyone, but his appearance was a tad more bizarre than usual. But this didn’t apply to his looks; rather, it was more of what he wore. From what anyone could guess, he always wore weights under his clothes and even stuffed some in his shoes. Being the slender young boy he was, this made him appear funny-looking, and his glasses didn’t make things any better, to say the least. He was widely known for this appearance and his signature clumping sounds that sounded out whenever he walked due to the weights in his shoes.
In such a school environment, it was customary for some people to have their opinions of him, but Finnian always tried to pay them no heed. Not long after starting middle school, they embarked on a school trip to the Centurion headquarters here in Ravenwood. This school trip had become a tradition for Ravenwood High to know more about the organization they were under and explore the numerous opportunities of being among the selected few who would be recruited by the organization someday.
Today, the kids made their way through the gargantuan halls of Centurion headquarters, staring blankly like lost sheep. It was possible that the words fit to describe this place were yet to be added to their vocabulary, so they could only ouu and ahh when they saw something fascinating. Finnian tried to avoid being socially awkward today by not making his presence known with his dragging footsteps and ended up behind the group. He wasn’t concerned about this though. At least, it gave him more time to see the detailed structures everywhere in the hall.
The tour guides and the teachers in charge of the school trip were ahead of the group explaining in detail what Centurion was all about; catering for the Cyphs. Finnian, on the other hand, cared less about the explanation and focused on something else.
The Ranking Board!
The Ranking Board was basically as its name served; it contained the different ranks Cyphs fell under. In as much as Ravenwood was now a city of Cyphs, they weren’t all equally strong. Hence, Centurion created a ranking system to gauge their strength. Finnian drew closer and closer to the ranking board, but to his disappointment, there weren’t any names on it. Nonetheless, this didn’t stop Finnian from looking at the board with so much enthusiasm that his eyes welled up in excitement. If he was strong enough to meet the requirements someday, he could be among the new recruits of the organization! He was so immersed in this feeling that he didn’t notice when someone walked up beside him.
“Too bad there aren’t any names there yet.” He said.
Finnian wasn’t paying attention and so couldn’t perceive when this man walked up beside him. He jerked before calming down a bit. “I guess so,” He didn’t know who this man was, nor did he want to engage in any idle conversation. Hence, his straightforward reply. However, at a second glance, Finnian noticed something odd about him. Besides the trooper’s Centurion badge tied around his arm, one would think he was a beggar from the streets.

“Who are you?” Finnian spoke in a low tone but soon figured out that it wasn’t as low as he thought it was. He quickly covered his mouth and stole a glance at the man beside him to see the latter’s reaction. But a soft chuckle was all the response the man gave him before moving closer to the statues. The man looked to be in his early thirties but he had a slender appearance for someone at that age and in addition to it, he had quite a tall yet sloppy posture even when standing. “Timid as you might seem, I’d always choose someone who speaks their mind to someone who keeps their intention hidden.” The man’s tone was lazy, as if not taking his words seriously in the slightest. Finnian didn’t know who this man was nor could he understand what he was trying to say or why he was saying it in the first place. While Finnian wondered this, the man snuck a peek at the former’s shoes and smiled faintly, “Nice shoes,” This might look like a compliment, but Finnian had gotten a lot of such ‘com

Fast-forward to the present, it has been 6 years since the incident at Ravenwood. Even though the incident garnered the attention of the World Government, Centurion succeeded in forming an alliance with them. And with Ravenwood being a little city, it didn’t take long before everything was handed over to the organization. However, this didn’t stop the government from carrying out their investigations, be it in secret or out in the open. Yet, the result remained out of their reach. Suffering setback after setback, the government finally eased up a little on their investigations, only watching from the side. A lot happened over the past years. A lot of advancements have been made, and Ravenwood was not just a small town anymore, but a town of Cyphs. … Ring, ring, ring- The school bell clamored to signify the end of the fifth period and the beginning of lunch break. In a matter of minutes, the cafeteria was already crowded, as if patiently waiting for this time of day. The first-yea

Dr. Hani Jager was the head of the research team conducting the study in Ravenwood. As the head of research, he would usually move around to the various stations to observe how things were going there. Today was different because he wasn’t present, so the lady filled in for him. Her name was Dr. Imarri Easton. And after Finnian’s explanation, she remained silent, as if contemplating something. “I see…” She muttered under her breath. She knew the various due protocols and wouldn’t move against the wish of her superior. Though she was curious to know more about why Finnian would do something as unorthodox as wearing weighty clothes, she had to suppress it and carry on with the tests. “Since it’s that way, I’ll have to ask Dr. Hani himself,” She thought to herself, and afterward, turned to Finnian. “I didn’t know anything about this till now, so I apologize for my tone earlier. Since it’s something Dr. Hani told you to do, then I’ll have to ask him myself.” Finnian smiled faintly, “It

Dr. Imarri was yet to understand if the explanation was so simple. “He… floats…?” “Weightless, to be more specific. Just like a man in space.” Back when the incident happened, the result was that quite a number of people had awakened to abilities, of which, Finnian was among. He had woken up to being suspended in mid-air, floating around like a feather, and even a feather had more weight than he did. With the help of his family, he was able to overcome that crisis by stuffing weights in his clothes, and even then, he would sometimes float away. Since that time, he had always felt embarrassed because of the weight he had to carry to stay steady on the ground, and most times, he had to reinforce the weights again and again to at least be able to walk like everyone else. This might have been difficult for him, but there was nothing else he could do for the time being. This went on until the monthly research inspection began. At the time, Dr. Hani found it bizarre that a kid wore so ma

This was one of those slow mornings in Ravenwood High. It was already the fourth period but to the students, time seemed to move at snail's speed, if not slower. Finnian held his jaw with his hand, trying so hard not to fall asleep, for if he did, that would be more than disastrous. This was because the teacher in class was one of the hardcore teachers in Ravenwood, Mrs. Ruth Morgan. She was one of Centurion’s Senior Commissioners, and also among those assigned as a teacher in Ravenwood High. After the incident happened that changed Ravenwood, a lot of changes had to be made. Under the World Government’s directive, Ravenwood was first quarantined, in case it was some sort of outbreak. But soon enough, it was discovered that a good number of people remained normal regardless, and they were then separated from the Cyphs. Out of those relocated from the city, 55% were normal, while the rest were Cyphs. As a result, it was only natural and random that some of the teachers were normal, and

Mrs. Ruth made her way through the crowd of students, feeling delighted as she saw the enthusiasm on their faces. She walked in with a helper carrying a little bowl and setting it on a table beside her. “Good day class F,” She greeted. “I’m impressed to see how eager you are about this exercise. But I wouldn’t want to keep you here longer than I have to, so we’ll just go straight to the point.” Her introduction made everyone feel even more delighted and eager. “I've divided the class into two; the first half and the second half. The first half consists of the first 18 according to the class list, while the second half is the second 18. In the bowl beside me are 18 names of the students in the second half of the class list. In other words, those whose names fall within 19-36 in the class list have their names written down here. But the ones choosing will be those of the first half of the class; the first 18 students according to the class records…” Although she said she would be goin

Finnian was at a loss for words and could feel the intensity of the fist heading towards his face. Nonetheless, in that split second before the fist could connect, Finnian ducked and swerved his body to the side, dodging the attack. Joel’s fist, though it hit nothing, still stirred quite some breeze. Just like one averting tragedy, Finnian felt that if he delayed a split second later, he would undoubtedly be thrown off the stage. And even if that didn’t happen, it would still be painful. Joel, on the other hand, had a serious expression on his face, but amid that was also a faint look of astonishment. Personal records belonging to a Cyph were a secret between the officials and the Cyph in question. And according to Joel’s record, he had agility that far outstripped the average margin despite his look. This made it ironic as well as unexpected that someone so plump and chubby could have such speed. Nonetheless, Joel was surprised for another reason altogether. Though he hadn’t used h

Finnian’s body went cold. It was akin to being seen through by the principal. Finnian was known as an unrepentant dawdler in everything. He’d always move slowly and was often taunted by Martin for being slower than a snail. Unfortunately, this habit of his affected his punctuality in school. There were times when he’d come to class after three classes were over. And some other times he’d get to school during lunchtime. By now, every commissioner working in the school had noted this behavior of his and reported it to the principal.Finnian didn’t know what to say to defend himself and simply replied,“I understand sir. I’ll do my best from now on.”The principal nodded,“That’s fine. That will be it for our little meeting. I hope to see more outstanding qualities in the next trial.”The principal beamed a smile as he sent the students off,“Seek the commissioners for more details.”Outside the office, Finnian felt relieved the meeting was over. It was sort of embarrassing being scolded

Seeing the girls enlightened faces made the commissioner smile more. Stephanie was more convinced by it than anyone else. “Of course, that has to be it!” she took a deep breath, “I’ve been thinking about this for a while; it felt like my head was going to explode.” Stephanie wasn’t the only one who shared this sentiment. They all exchanged their views about it, as the commissioner listened. “However,” her voice trailed off, drawing the attention of the students once again. “However, what?” Stephanie asked. “However,” the commissioner smiled. “It could also be that Finnian’s enhancement is as good as his ability. He could be one of those who tend to keep their abilities private. It’s not really against the rules to do so, hence we have quite a few of them.” Saying this, she turned to one of the elites, Emma Graham. “Emma, you’re both in the same class. Maybe there’s something about him you noticed that we haven’t.” Emma was surprised at being unexpectedly called upon. She thought b

“Quit your fussing,” Benji said coolly. “It’s not the end of the world if he joins us.”“Hey, whose side are you on?” Caesar fumed.“There are no sides to this. Compared to us, the girls did a better job. We no doubt messed up in the trial. The sooner you accept that the better.”Benji was no sage, but he tended to be a realist when necessary. He too had lost to Finnian but that he wasn’t fuming like Caesar didn’t mean he wasn’t hurt too. Caesar had nothing to say. Or rather, anything he said would be of no use. He gnashed his teeth silently and grumbled inside.…The winner of the female category, Feigh Omah, was also undergoing treatment in the elite ward. Her mates weren’t resentful toward her but they more or less faked smiles to ease up the atmosphere. Feigh was a decent fighter even among the elite, so although some of them had their misgivings, it was easier to accept nonetheless.“The boys are having a hard time it seems…” said Tania, one of the elites. “Hey,” Finnian piped up. “I’ve got a question for you.” He turned to Joel. “What is it?” “I’ve fought both you and Evan and you both excel in speed. But I’ve been wondering for a while now… who’s faster between you both?” It was just as Finnian had said, both Joel and Evan excelled in terms of speed. And although he asked this question, he knew deep down who was more problematic to deal with. Simulating his fight with Joel and Evan, Finnian found it a bit surprising that Joel posed more of a threat than the elite! Joel’s physique would throw anyone off about what enhancements he excelled in. Only by fighting him would one come to figure out that this meaty fella wasn’t in any way to be trifled with. Speed aside, Finnian also felt that Joel was a good fighter too. For someone his, he was both flexible and agile. The same thing went for Evan. Finnian simulated his fight with the elite, and though the latter was quite something, he fell short of Joel in some ways. In terms of speed,

Martin walked over to Finnian’s bed. He too had a couple of scratches that required attention, but not as bad as his friend. “You look horrible,” He snickered.“Yeah well… you’re fat.” Finnian couldn’t come up with a retort and snapped with that instead.Martin slightly frowned, “That’s low… even for you.”“You didn’t give me much of a choice. Besides, aren’t you supposed to be on bed rest, what are you doing here?”“I heard you were in a terrible condition and wanted to check if you were dead yet,” Martin shrugged. “Also, unlike you, I don’t badly need bed rest; I can move around as I want.”Finnian faked a smile, “Good for you, now leave me alone. With you around, I don’t think I can recover at all.”And before Finnian could finish his sentence, Martin already made himself comfortable by perching on a corner of his bed. Finnian already expected this and didn’t bother to struggle.“Sure, make yourself comfortable. It’s not like I need the space or anything…” said Finnian sarcastical

Declared Winners
The students were awe-struck by Finnian’s performance in the trial. The crowd unconsciously shifted for the lad to walk through; not a single opposition. With how silent everyone was, even the slightest whisper was audible. Finnian’s expression was cut from stone; he spared no one a single glance. Bystanders obviously would think he was putting on an attitude, not knowing he currently wasn’t seeing properly. His left eye was wounded and covered with bandages while he couldn’t see with the other without his glasses. No matter the reason for it, all added to the intense bearing of his performance. Even if some people had something to say, they couldn’t say a word. Getting to his initial position, he was suddenly greeted by a slight punch to his wounded shoulder. His eyes contorted from the pain as he angrily turned to see who had done it. “What, you want to fight me?” Martin had a wicked smile hanging on his face. It makes no difference if you hate them or not.”“You’re not getting the point,” Doyle cut in. “The elites are strong indeed, but why can’t someone else be strong as well?” This was his argument. The crowd around them was stirred when Doyle said this. Most of them were passive toward the elites and Doyle’s statement pointed their minds in another direction. The mixed crowd was provoked into an atmosphere of intense arguments, to the point where the commissioners had to step in to maintain decorum.“Please remain silent, the counting isn’t over.” Commissioner Glenn announced. Taking The Center Stage
Finnian’s result so far was indeed intimidating compared to that of his peers. The female category loathed him still, but they had to admit that he had taken them unawares. He was among those least expected to achieve much in the trial, and you couldn’t blame them for thinking like this. When it came to bulk physical appearances, Finnian was without a doubt at the bottom of the list. The few times he participated in school sports was a disaster. He never even made it past tryouts in most cases. One time, he tried participating in a race but his weights dragged him down and his team lost. That was the very last time he was seen near anything sporty.Teenagers had a nasty way of spreading rumors and dragging someone’s name into the mud. The Counting Continues
The crowd became increasingly agitated but soon became calm because another name had popped up on the screen. The counting continued!Everyone had something to say but swallowed it to not make a fuss out of nothing. After all, it wasn’t a crime if Finnian’s skill and raw combat prowess could get him this far. Some thought he cheated but even they knew that was near impossible. Anyone who could pull it off might be seen as the greatest mastermind of all time. The eleventh name was a rather promising student and the one who had been Finnian’s opponent in the simulation, Joel Adric. The kid named Joel can be considered one of the few students who drew the attention of the organization besides the elite and special class. His records so far drew Centurion’s attention because, in terms of speed, there wasn’t anyone who could match up to him, except for Evan. And even at that, Centurion couldn’t conclude who the fastest was between them. Also, in terms of combat prowess, he was among the fi
