CHAPTER 12 - OPPORTUNITY

Cassie's apartment was almost vintage but reasonably minimalist. It looked as if it had been taken from a magazine cover, colorful in the right measure, and also harmonious.

“Thank you so much for everything,” Cassie said in thanks, still pulling herself together from her fright. “They are very much on me because of the… wolves,” she said. Jack didn't know what to do about that, he felt he had no right to have a say in the matter. “Sit down. I'll prepare something quickly by way of thanks,” she ordered. Pointing to a medium-sized ochre-colored sofa. Jack obeyed and sat down, if it would make her feel better, he would. Looking around the house, he could see that in some ways the place reminded him of her. Maybe she had decorated it herself. Most of the rooms in the office were decorated, possibly Cassie had something to do with it. Jack didn't have that much time, he urgently needed to visit the interdicted room where the crime had happened, but he was there, facing the girl's dilemma.

It was about twenty minutes before Cassie appeared in the room with two bowls of a creamy soup that Jack could not deduce the taste of. It was delicious, and he didn't hide this information from her. The woman seemed to have calmed down, but it didn't take long to break the silence. “I've had some nightmares about wolves,” she commented. He had already given her space to talk about it, he couldn't blame her for enjoying it. “I don't usually remember anything in detail, but these nightmares…,” she told him. Jack swallowed a dry mouth. He had no right, he repeated to himself. Cassie was close enough that Jack could smell her sweet, almost cloying perfume. She was calling him indirectly. This was his chance. Sitting even closer to her, he touched her hands and made eye contact. “Your eyes are so deep and familiar,” she commented. “I like them,” he mentioned once again. He had no right. His body moved closer and closer, but he found himself surprised when she began to move closer as well. Finally, even closer, he smelled her, not her perfume, but her. Cassie was remarkable, Cassie was perfect. Abruptly, he moved closer to her face and gave her a soft, quick kiss, as if he was getting to know the territory. Cassie eagerly pulled him closer to her and began a longer kiss, already taking off Jack's easiest pieces of clothing. He didn't stop her. She didn't stop him. With his hands slightly larger than hers, he began to wrap his arms around her gently, but invitingly. They lay together on the couch. Cassie was on top and was taking off more of her clothes, but this time, her clothes. Jack's mind was racing, he didn't expect any of this to happen, at least not anytime soon. Finally, the woman got rid of the white social t-shirt and showed off the beautiful set of top lingerie she owned, red as blood.

Jack was ready to finally have a night with the woman he wanted but was interrupted by a terrible smell. The smell of wolf was in the air, as strong as he remembered. It was as if he were standing next to several wolves. “What time is it?” he asked, hurriedly. Looking at the clock on a small table, he could see that it was late. Late enough that he was in trouble. “Cassie, I'm sorry, but I have to go,” he said hurriedly, pulling her off and dressing at top speed. “Thank you so much for the food,” he said, before slamming the apartment door, and leaving.

Running through the halls, Jack's cell phone rang. “Where are you?” asked the voice on the other end, it was Kurt. “We were supposed to be away,” said the angry partner. Jack asked his friend where he was, “Waiting in your fucking car. Detail, without the key, man,” he said, stressed. “Come on over. I'm sure we'll change,” he warned. Jack continued running through the halls, still with the connection open. Suddenly, before he crossed another hallway, he heard the police at the next intersection. They were there for the assault of hours earlier that he had done to protect Cassie. He knew they were going straight to his apartment, so he had to go around and again had to resort to the isolated elevator. He warned Kurt over the phone that he was going to meet him and ended the call.

On the way to the elevator, he hurried down but managed to make it to the parking lot to meet Kurt, who was standing next to the car. “You need to be more responsible,” Kurt said, picking up the keys and getting into the vehicle. “Can you tell me what the hell happened?” his companion questioned, with the car already on the road, heading for the usual forest. Jack couldn't hide about Cassie, so he told them everything, from lunch to defending the cameras, to dinner. “Is it serious? With our current situation, you were dating the woman who is in the middle of this whole thing? Lucky for you, we're out of time,” Kurt said angrily, driving at full speed.

They finally arrived at their destination, already suffering from body changes. As usual, Jack changed first, then Kurt. Kurt took advantage of his wolf form to attack Jack a few times while they were hunting. Jack couldn't blame his friend for being angry, after all, there were too many things to solve.
