A Million Dollars

After a while of riding the bicycle, Agora shopping mall revealed itself as Ajax turned a corner. It's light were still on and the sign still read open. His lips curved upwards in a smile.

Agora's shopping mall was known for their 24 hours services. The mall was very big and had the highest patronage in their region when compared to other stores.

He was not surprised when he got in that there was people shopping inside.

As he walked in he looked around in awe. He felt like a character in a movie. Everywhere was covered in glass that were as clear as crystals. The bright lights, a moving staircase that led to the floor above them, every thing was beautiful.

A soft song played in the background. Apart from the song, the place was quiet. Well, not silent kind of quiet, but it was not noisy. He observed that there were not much people in the mall. They had fewer customers at this time.

He remembered the last time he came here with his grandfather. The place was full unlike today.

He walked to the lady at one of the counters.

“Hi, umm…” he paused and stared at his wrist watch. It was few minutes past midnight.

“…Morning … um, good morning ma’am” he greeted the lady that stood behind the counter with a smile.

She stared at him for a while accessing him from his head to toes while her face squeezed in disgust.

He cleared his throat and chuckled. “Umm, I'm looking for the jewelry show room.”

The lady giggled. “You are joking right?”

He stared at her with a straight face.

“Oh you are serious, well, there’s nothing there that someone like you could afford, so, no need stressing me. Find something you can afford” she muttered as her eyes went back to the computer in front of her.

When she noticed he was not leaving she raised her voice at him. “All these broke ass poor men. Did you not hear me earlier, I said leave, there's nothing in the jewelry showroom you can afford!”

Another lady who was sitted at another counter called his attention.

“Hello Mr,….”

He turned to look at her. It took him a while to realize she was talking to him and asking for his name.

“Oh, it's Ajax,”

“May I show you the jewelry show room.” She asked politely. He noticed that her uniform looked new. She was probably new here. She looked young too. Probably Caroline's age range.

He walked behind her while she led the way.

As they got to the jewelry showroom, his mouth widened in awe. The Jewelries were beyond gorgeous. He could not wait to see Caroline's face when he gets these for her.

He had a hard time picking one for Caroline. He decided to ask for help. He called the attention of the girl from the counter.

“Please I need your help selecting a jewelry for my girl. Today is her birthday. Technically, it was yesterday but….” He stopped and chuckled.

The girl chuckled with him. “Well, I'm new here, I've not sold to you before, so I don't really know the kind of jewelries you might love”

He nodded.

“I am really sorry for the way Salmon talked to you earlier. I wish I could say she's not always like that but I’d be lying. Just avoid her next time. She addresses customers based on their looks. And I'm not saying you look bad, but I've she sees you do not look extravagant, she’d address you disrespectfully”

He nodded again. “It's fine”

His eyes swept the showroom. “You know what, package the whole jewelries”

The lady’s eyes widened in shock. Okay, maybe this guy is a little deranged. She knew she should not think like the mean lady but what if she was right.

“Okay” she muttered and ordered everything to be packaged by the other staffs.

***

After Ajax had packed other stuffs, clothes, shoes, accessories for both himself and Caroline, he went to meet her at the counter. He took a deep breath and hoped he was not being played by this voice in his head. He tried fishing out cash from his wallet from his pocket as he was used to that.

“Everything is $57500” the girl said as she packaged it in bags.

His breath caught at the price. He had never gotten this in his entire life since he started working neither had he spent such.

He could observe the 'mean’ lady from earlier staring at them from her counter.

“We don't accept cash, destitute” she yelled to him from her counter.

He ignored the lady and fished out his card from his wallet and gave it to the girl in front of him.

She had a pleading smile on, as if to say please not listen to her, I'm sorry you have to put up with that

He smiled back at her, as if to say it's fine. It's not your fault.

The truth was that he was used to being called that for a long while now. It never really bothered him. Well, except it's coming from someone he really cared about- Caroline.

His heart began to race as she swiped the card and asked him to put in a pin.

He slowly put in the pin.

“Sorry, it was declined” she said with pity in her eyes.

He did not need to look to see the mean lady. The sound of her cackles was enough to make him wish the floor would just swallow him.

TRY AGAIN

Oh yeah, you must be kidding me! He wished he would see this AI, he could imagine ways of murdering it.

TRY AGAIN AJAX

He looked at the girl in the counter. Try again.

He could hear the mean woman laugh louder. The scraping of chairs on the ground and footsteps told him she was coming towards them.

He carefully put in his pin. 1-6-4-3

He squeezed his eyes shut as he hoped it would work.

He heard the ruffling of bags and then she gave it to him with his card.

“It went through?” both said in unison.

He asked unbelievably as he turned to look behind him to see who said that. There the mean lady stood wide opened.

“Yeah, it did” the girl said with a smile.

He took the bags and started towards the exit leaving one on the counter .

“Um, Mr Ajax, you left this” the polite lady called out t to him.

He turned back and gave a wry smile.

“ It's for you. Thank you for being nice to me.”

He watched as the girl’s eyes misted and tears began to pool in her eye lids.

The mean lady stared at him with an expression torn between awe, jealousy, sadness and regret. He understood that sheregretted ever being mean to him.

He watched her sad expression and smiled to himself as he walked away thinking about how much money he had left to spend.
