Chapter 7

Brian drove Mrs. Joy to her mother's house, a beautiful and towering building that stood as a tribute to the Davis family's prosperity.

As they arrived, Mrs. Joy took the vehicle keys from Brian's hand without a word and went rapidly towards the entrance of the house, leaving him to follow after.

Shaking his head slightly at her rude behavior, Brian entered the exquisite lobby of the estate. His gaze examined the surroundings as he went through the house. It was a dramatic contrast to the modest roots he had formerly known when he was still with his grandfather.

Brian immediately noticed his wife, Julie, and made his way over to her. He leaned in to kiss her on the cheek, a warm gesture despite the tension in the air.

"Hey, love," he murmured to her.

Julie smiled sweetly in return, but her eyes communicated a feeling of discomfort as they took in the disapproving stares from other family members. They found a place to sit together, intending to fade into the background among the gathering.

However, it didn't take long for some family members to publicly voice their displeasure for Brian's presence. One of Mrs. Claire's relatives, a distant cousin, couldn't resist the desire to express his dissatisfaction.

"What's he doing here?" the cousin murmured to another family member. "Doesn't he have any shame? After insulting Mrs. Claire at her birthday party?"

The whispered comments and scornful stares continued to pass around the room, making Brian uncomfortably aware of the family's unfavorable attitudes towards him. Despite the pain, he maintained his cool, telling himself that his actual identity was not theirs to know.

Julie, at his side, decided to defuse the tension by engaging in pleasant conversation with others who were more receptive to her presence. Brian realized that he had to tread carefully amidst all the hate.

Brian's gaze wandered over the gathering, taking in the features of different family members, but there was one glaring omission that didn't go unnoticed—uncle Richard. Despite the unpleasant situation, Brian couldn't help but grin internally, a sensation of joy sweeping over him.

"So, he's not here," Brian thought to himself. "I guess he is already facing the repercussions of his actions."

With the dissolution of the relationship between the Johnson family and Elysian Enterprises, it was evident that the Johnsons were now facing financial issues and a possible huge debt.

Not too long after, the big entry doors swung wide, and in stepped the matriarch of the family, Mrs. Claire Davis. She had a dominating figure, projecting an aura of power and elegance that commanded respect.

The instant she entered, everyone in the room rose to their feet, a display of respect and devotion. The whispers and side discussions ended as everybody focused their attention to the revered family member.

"Grandmother," Julie welcomed. Her voice filled with warmth and respect. She grasped Brian's hand, to maintain her cool.

Mrs. Claire Davis addressed the entire family with a royal nod, her look a blend of tenderness and power. She exchanged compliments and light chat as she made her way farther into the room, a trail of family members closely behind her.

"Welcome, Grandmother," one family member replied with a grin.

"Good to see you, Mrs. Davis," another joined in.

Mrs. Claire Davis greeted their welcomes with a kind word, emitting an atmosphere of love and connectedness to her family. The room became quiet, as everyone waited for her to take her position at the head of the table.

Mrs. Claire had always been the cornerstone of the family, and her presence had the ability to unify, soothe, and inspire the generations who looked up to her.

"My beloved family," she continued, her gaze roaming over the gathering relatives, " the Elysian Enterprise has put out a circular searching for builders who can construct a huge estate for them. For centuries, the Davis family has hoped for a chance like the one that is before us now. We have watched as other families attained great success, and now, the way to our own riches is right in front of us."

Mrs. Claire's remarks were filled with optimism and resolve, and she added, "The latest news about Elysian Enterprises and the contracts they wish to grant gives us an opportunity to enhance our family's position. It is a chance we must not waste."

Everyone listened closely, knowing that this moment was important for the family's future. However, the weight of recent events weighed hard on their thoughts.

The memory of what had happened to the Johnson family made everyone scared. No one wanted to express their fears.

Brian, seated among the family members, studied the room intently. He could see the worry in their eyes, the hesitancy in their words. It was evident that the recent events that happened to the Johnson family had sent shockwaves through the Davis family, creating a feeling of fear and worry.

"I am calling for someone among us to step forward and take on the responsibility of preparing a proposal for the Elysian contract," Mrs. Claire announced forcefully. "This person will represent our family in the competition.

Her pronouncement lingered in the air, and yet no one in the room dared to speak out. Fear and worry seized the family members, making them unwilling to volunteer for such a big responsibility.

"Come on, someone must step up," Mrs. Claire pushed, her voice laced with anxiety. "This is an opportunity that we cannot afford to let slip through our fingers."
