The Dark Man
“What? You don’t like the sight of blood?”.
The man looked at the hand in which he still held the old man’s heart, held it tightly, then, puffing, threw it next to the defenceless body and finally cleansed himself of the blood on the rags worn by the old man.“You made quite a mess of it,” he said, looking around. The killing that just happened had given him a thrill of emotion that had immediately dozed off. That’s what always happened. At first, when you are young and impudent, hunting, death, and feeling that you can be masters of someone else’s destiny, they always give a thrill of excitement that is difficult to doze off. Over time, the killing and deaths that a person caused became ordinary, a kind of habit. They no longer had the effect of the first time; he no longer felt the blame; they passed as when you cross a river through a bridge every day. At first, we stop to observe the stream, fascinated by the greatness of the mother; then, with time, we begin to look at it with different eyes, bored. It is no longer a novelty but something that no longer touches particular emotions within the human body. And so death had become for him. He felt indifferent to having just ended life with his bare hands: he did not feel gratification, guilt, or remorse. Only fatigue, because he had to get his hands dirty for the umpteenth time, to perform an action that he did not want but that he had been forced to do because it was what everyone expected from a creature like him. Not a man, but a beast. He stood up and approached her, motionless, staring at the main gate of the walls; he stood beside her and watched her. She was thoughtful, hiding everything she felt for fear of showing her weaknesses.“Has he nicked that iron armour?”“Don’t be stupid,” she answered without looking at him before walking towards the gate. At that time, it was closed and, thanks to the fire, there was no sentry: very dangerous for a city as important as Sierra.People weren’t shouting as loud as a few moments before. They had managed to tame the fire; sooner or later, they would see them: they needed to move away from that place as soon as possible. Although a trip down memory lane was what he needed, just to remember who he had been before and who he could no longer be.The sun was about to rise, the sky was a rosier shade, and sooner or later, the sunlight would illuminate the whole city, waking its inhabitants. Suddenly a shiver ran through his body, and he stopped and turned towards the fortress. What was that feeling? What warmth began to pervade him, warming his soul and heart that he thought was frozen?“Do you miss him?” the woman asked, but he continued to look at the fortress, feeling a pain in his chest. He didn’t know exactly what it was, as if something was missing, as if only at that moment he was feeling the emptiness left by that lack. You’re wavering, the voice inside his head started again, so he closed his eyes, inhaling deeply, hoping it would stop, as the screams began to break his eardrums. They shouted that he was a coward incapable of doing what he was created for.He tried to recover quickly, but they could not stay there long. He shook his head and turned, walking again toward the exit. If they had been more robust, they would have left there already, they would not have needed to walk, and they would have disappeared into thin air, but that was not something they could do then. They weren’t strong enough, and even though he should have been furious about it, he couldn’t help but feel relief. If he and the girl didn’t have enough power, neither would they, which meant hope and joy to him, even if he would never admit it aloud.“We have enough power to get in here but not enough to stay long without suffering the effects of their presence or using our full abilities. Interesting,» the girl said aloud, but she was not talking to him but herself. The man observed her along the way: the woman often found herself thinking aloud, especially when she was with him as if she felt safe and free to express her thoughts without fearing the consequences.“The old man has just died, in a few hours, the power will be released, and two of them will not be enough to stop them.” They found themselves facing the main gate and were on the top of the walls with a leap. From there, they could see the entire lower town; the guards were moving away from the fire site and returning to their positions: soon, they would find the body of the old man and sound the alarm, and everyone inside the fortress would come out, including the prince. Everyone but the old king never moved from there.“Heafod, the sun is rising.” The sentry was posted outside the walls; he had not permitted him to come with him: the less they had entered the interior, the less likely they would be discovered.
“Tell me something I don’t know. Let’s get out of here before they see us.” They jumped off the walls and found themselves in the upper town.“Did you come alone?” he turned to her blissfully, ignoring the watchman. The latter stared at her in wonder while immersed in her head full of thoughts and worries. The soldier was one of the new ones and had never had the chance to meet her in person, but he had heard about her, like all those who sided with them. Everyone was amazed when they saw her for the first time; everyone fell in front of her beauty: the forbidden fruit that no one had ever been able to grasp. Well, only one person did, but that didn’t matter.“The less, the better; it is not correct” she turned to speak to the sentry. “What is your name?”The sentry froze and put a knee on the ground with his head bent down as a sign of reverence.“Saug, Heafod.” She looked at him carefully, studying him as a lion does when he finds his prey.“I didn’t want to bring them here”, the girl said, shrugging her shoulders and walking towards the forest. He put the hood back on his head to protect his face.“Are you coming back?” he asked, looking at the girl’s back.“What, you miss me?” Her tone was defiant, but she didn’t turn around to look at him. “I have some issues to resolve, don’t worry. When the time comes, you will understand.”They entered the dark and silent forest, the animals had fled, and then he heard a noise, and he could see in the shadows a vast red and bloody eye, while a deep breath accompanied the rustling of the leaves of the trees as if a violent breeze moved them. She brought her pet, he thought, as the beast moved his paws, getting into position and shaking the ground under his feet. The girl approached the creature, caressing gently between the scales of the beast, while the latter basked in the touch of his mistress, emitting a sound that reminded him of a cat’s purr. The girl climbed on the animal’s enormous back without saying a word while the man and his soldier watched them silently. The creature spread its substantial black wings, soaring and drifting toward the horizon. Then he disappeared into the clouds tinged with light without emitting any sound. He heard Saug sigh with his eyes wide open in wonder.“You were lucky; not everyone has a chance to see one. Our dear commander prefers to keep her secret weapons hidden,” said the man shrugging his shoulders.“If she uses only one of them, we will be able to conquer Mihdel in no time”, reflected the soldier with a dreamy air.“Too bad we do not control them,” replied the man. They went into the dark forest and passed the place where the beast was hidden, laughing to see how there was a massive patch of grass and burnt trees in the middle of the black forest. It certainly wouldn’t go unnoticed. But it was better this way; they had to know that sooner or later they would come; the day was approaching. They quickly crossed the woods, passing the enormous trunks of trees. They set off to reach the other side of the mountain on foot; they took longer than necessary but still managed to get it as soon as the sun peeked out and obscured the moon. They found the horses where they had left them. Fortunately, there was no passage of farmers there, at least not at night. Therefore, no one had had the chance to see them. They rode up and moved. A long journey awaited them, not only that of returning from their people but, from that moment on, they would have to travel a long way, make sacrifices and make crucial decisions. It was time to accomplish that goal many years ago: to bring their people to the new home. The Soldier“For the four demons, that damned fire didn’t want to go out.”Dan put the helmet on his head, and both soldiers were on their way back to their post after spending the last few hours trying to put out a fire that came out of nowhere, which Brad never had.Dan was trying needlessly to clean his cheeks of soot, but all he got was the opposite effect, staining his face even more, which became covered with ash. So they were forced to stop at a fountain so that he could rinse his hands and face.“Not so bad for the first night, is it?” said the cheerful young Dan.“If you find it exciting to put out a stupid fire, you’ll go crazy when we have to stop the drunken brawls kicked out from taverns.” Dan took off his helmet and shoved his whole head into the tub filled with water, while Brad leaned against the wall from where the latter came out, watching the young boy’s head disappear into the water with his spear in his hand. The sun was beginning to peep from the mountains; the c
His limbs ached, and he could barely walk and hold his sword; he could no longer lift it. His mind dictated it, but his arm wouldn’t respond, so all he could do was drag it to the ground. The tip left furrows on the ground, still wet from the rain. His blond hair had stuck to his sweat-soaked forehead. The blood had dried, encrusting with the blond strands. He had blood on his hands and arms, probably his face too, but he knew that blood wasn’t his. It belonged to someone else, maybe more than one person. He kept walking, but he didn’t know exactly where he was going, maybe he was trying to escape the horrible view in front of him. Around were severed bodies’ parts. A hand, an arm, a leg, a head, a body cut in half, a body without a head. The further he went, the more he saw them.In that camp, he was the only living being, around there was only death. The sky was a vivid red, like all that blood surrounding him. He did not remember what had happened, he did not know why he was there,
NathanMyra always told him that he possessed a particular power given to him by the Gods, and he, as an eternal child, had always believed her. Growing up, he understood that every mother would say that to her child to make him feel special. Although Myra had never told Damien in retrospect when his brother woke up startled by some nightmare she didn’t want to talk about. Since he was a child, Myra had always told Nathan that he was a special person, destined to fulfill a great destiny and for Nathan had always been a dream.Upon reflection, Myra had never reserved those words for her son or Doreon when he was entrusted to her care. But maybe she just said that because she knew that Nathan, the only legitimate son, would become king.He shook his head. Why was he filling his head with all the memories of the people he loved? It’s the dream. It’s that damn dream’s fault, it had upset his mind and his heart and made him sink into anguish. They entered the council chamber. The dim sunli
NathanHe turned and saw her there. Sumon Crowned, in all her beauty. Her fiery red hair framed her pale face, tied in a soft braid that hung down her shoulder, leaving some soft strands surrounding her face, rosy cheeks, and fleshy lips raised in a sweet smile. The green silk cloak highlighted the purple eyes. She had lowered the hood, probably to be recognized by the guards. She wore a simple blue dress with yellow and orange shades.Surely his wife had gone into town to visit some orphanage, Nathan knew... But to go so far from the fortress was dangerous for her.“What are you doing here?” the prince asked, looking at her.Sumon approached him, crossing her arms across her chest.“I was passing by and heard that there was a corpse. I never saw a dead person, I was curious.” She shrugged as if that were a valid excuse. Doreon laughed.“Now that you have seen him... Guards take the princess back to the palace. This is not the place for her”, Nathan ordered again.“And what would be t
NathanThey passed the main gate and entered the lower town. The streets were crowded. The farmers kept coming and going from the countryside with carts filled with the day’s harvest. Nathan stopped to watch an old man, struggling, pull his cart full of vegetables along the way. He was very thin and wore a large straw hat.Nathan noticed that the old man was barefoot. They were muddy, but even so, he could see the great sores on his feet. As he dragged the wagon, the old man slid and risked falling. Nathan stopped the horse, got off, and approached the old man. All the guards and Sumon stopped with him.The old man’s wagon got stuck in a hole, and the man couldn’t move it anymore. Nathan joined him and pushed the wagon, unlocking it, the old man thanked him and continued on his way.Nathan returned to his horse and saw that Sumon was giving a bag of gold coins to one of the guards.“Go and buy everything that farmer sells, then take it to the royal kitchens. If I find out that you’ve
Taryn “Now is the best time to strike” Ser Arien clapped his fist on the table, raising his voice. The sound echoed in the room. “We are in the middle of snowfall; the harvest is poor. If they are in trouble, so are we,” Ser Grander replied calmly, sitting on his wooden bench. She looked into Arien’s eyes as he retorted with a frowning look, dissatisfied with the answer. Taryn took the glass cup from the table and sipped wine while his lords quarreled with each other. Ser Grander continued to destroy every idea proposed by the men around her. The more proposals he discarded, the more enraged the lords were, and they raised their voices, fueling discontent. The men continued to argue with each other, Taryn observed them silently with the cup near her lips, while with her index finger, she tapped on it; her elbow was resting on the armrest of her seat. Sitting next to her, Ser Grander. He was one of her eldest lords and the only one she could trust blindly. Grander was like a fathe
Taryn “It is helping me to take back the north” Taryn smiled. “But could a king ever consider an idea maybe possible? If I were to decide, I would choose a more concrete option, not just a future possibility. If Aeris needs gold, he will need it immediately. We cannot present ourselves only with promises.” “Your Majesty, gold mines are scattered throughout the north, some are in castles of allies. The north has much more gold than it is minted, we can use that as... dowry.” The room burst into chaos again. Taryn rested on the back of her bench while the Lords were fighting again. Taront had dared to touch the most precious thing for those men: their hidden reserves. The men raised their voices, shouting at each other, and as usual, Taryn could not understand how it was possible that they could talk to each other while understanding each other in that way. After several minutes of racket, Taryn turned to Lord G
Taryn knew very well what advantages Locrand would bring, but she knew the disadvantages much better. Dealing with a man like Kyros was the worst ruin for anyone and would have marked the end of Elder, she would not have wished it even to her worst enemy. That man was scum, he couldn’t forget the way Kyros treated her when he tried to tell Athelstan to expect a son; the hatred he felt toward his own daughter; the way he treated all those who had no royal blood or who simply were not him. Taryn remembered the words of disgust spit at anyone. But most of all, she remembered how she had been treated and forced to escape from that Summit before Kyros’ killers got to her and killed her.“Only the west remains.” Taront pointed to the map. “The Ackards rule Aeris.”“Elhiàs Ackard has been on the throne for some years and has not yet taken a wife,” Grander said.“How are the relations between Aeris and
Victoria opened her lips and Athelstan slipped his tongue into it, beginning to make her play with his as he placed his hands on the girl's hips and pushed her towards the bed. Meanwhile, Victoria ran her hands over his bare chest until she reached the laces of his pants which she began to untie frantically.Arriving near the bed, Athelstan pulled his mouth off hers and made her turn her back. He moved her hair to the side and lowered the tiny shoulder strap of her dress, as he bent down to kiss her bare collarbone, unfastening her bodice with his fingers.Victoria reached out and dipped her fingers into Athelstan's red hair as he continued to lick and suck the bare skin of her neck. When he finally finished with the last lace, the dress loosened and Athelstan slid it down from her body, slowly stroking with his palms the skin that was gradually freed from the light fabric. His mouth continued his fiery battle with the skin of her neck, kissing and sucking
AthelstanAthelstan's chambers were dark when he entered with a servant in his ribs. While Athelstan took off his belt with his sword and rested it on the wooden table, the boy moved silently from one side of the room to the other, quickly lighting candles placed throughout the large space. After finishing with the candles and lighting the room thanks to them, the servant took leave leaving him alone.Huffing, Athelstan took off his tunic from above his head, remaining with his chest uncovered, sat down in the chair and poured some wine into the cup, emptying it immediately afterwards with a single sip.He raised his head to the ceiling and closed his eyes, breathing deeply. In a few days he would come face to face with Nathan Fannil and would have to swallow all the resentment and hatred that would certainly fill him. Pretend nothing, perhaps pulling out one of his brightest smiles, trying to control the impulse th
"The Sunauras were majestic creatures and managed to defeat and seal the power of the Ucrie. They confined him, but made a small sacrifice. They also had to confine the power of all other men, they bound it to the lives of those who later became the Old Men. As long as at least one of them remained alive, that power would never be released. Left alone and defenseless, Werod had to deal only with the Sunaura. A face-to-face confrontation, but despite the great power they had, they could not defeat him. When they were almost completely annihilated, the Sunaura combined their powers and one of them collected them to defeat him definitively, creating their own Bringan. The elected used all the power in his body to seal Werod.""Seal?" asked Taryn, confused."Killing Werod was impossible, so the Chosen One simply sealed him along with all his demonic creatures," Elhias explained."But not the Ucrie.""The Ucrie were now powerless and no longer posed a
"When it happened, my father decided to take her to the priestesses and there we met a woman, one of the Ucrie," Elhias said, his gaze lost and his mind turned to those old memories."A Ucria?" she asked in surprise.Elhias nodded. "She was, before she became a priestess herself.""You really saw a Ucria," Taryn said in disarray."They're not three-headed monsters, Taryn. They are human beings like us," Elhias said with a laugh."Didn't you ever think it could be dangerous? Could she be a spy?""The Docria trusted her blindly, if the ancient priestess can trust a Ucria, I don't see why I shouldn't too," Elhias replied, shrugging his shoulders, as if it were the most normal thing in the world."Do you realize that you trust others too much?" said Taryn in an exasperated tone."What can I do, I like to see the good in people," he replied, winking."What did the Ucria tell you?" Taryn immediately changed the subject.
Taryn"Bring Werod back to life?" asked Taryn surprised. "Werod is just a legend. A story to scare children.""Behind every story there is a kernel of truth, Your Majesty. For example, children are told the stories of great warriors with extraordinary magical powers and we ourselves are led to think of magic as a frivolity, as a story created just to entertain us when we were children, but the other day you saw what happened. You saw what you did."Taryn remembered the incident a few days earlier. That strange force that even now she felt circulating in her body and was doing everything to keep her at bay. It threatened to take over, to escape from her like an indomitable tiger trying to escape from the cage in which she had been locked for years."It was just an illusion, a coincidence. I slammed into the table and the jug broke," she said, shaking her head."You slammed so hard that you made the jug explode
"Rotten? How is this possible? They died yesterday or am I wrong?" Sumon turned her head towards him, looking at his profile, while Nathan stared at an undefined point in front of him and drank. The apple that came down, while he swallowed the wine."It's the same thing I asked for when I got there. But then one of the farmers opened one of the beasts, showing me what really frightened him. As soon as he opened the meat, a dark, thick liquid poured out of it, releasing a disgusting smell. Half of my stash started vomiting just with the smell." He inhaled deeply as if his nostrils were still filled with that smell, as if he could feel it even in the room. "The exterior was normal, but the interior was disgusting. The flesh was beginning to take on a black color and the organs were completely rancid, as if it had been dead for weeks. Not even the crows approached to feast." He shrugged his shoulders as if he had been struck with a shiver of disgust."That's not a good om
SumonSumon took off her clothes and slipped into the tub filled with boiling water carefully prepared by the maids that evening.Night had fallen quickly on that cloudy day, the moon was not visible, covered with thick gray clouds, making it dark and dark. She took a deep breath and let the scent of the oils envelop her completely, relaxing her. Before leaving her alone, the servants had served her dinner and lit a few candles inside the room, making the environment gloomy, but welcoming. She had left the food on the table, not touching it in the slightest, her appetite had disappeared. Her stomach had been closed from the moment a messenger arrived from the borderlands with Locrand. The new queen closed her eyes and rested her head on the wooden edge of the tub, letting the hot steam and perfumes fill her nose, relaxing all the tense muscles of her body.Nathan had left immediately to go check the situation
"Do you think I don't know the movements of every legion in the army, Pix?" Doreon narrowed his eyes. "Whether you like it or not, your troops are part of Haefest's army and coincidentally I am its commander, so you and your men answer to me," Doreon continued in an authoritarian tone.He had not moved an inch, he had maintained a relaxed position all the time, intimidating the lord in front of him."At least they were right to trust you," Pix said. Doreon looked at him, for a moment, confused. "My father and other lords had high expectations of you, mostly due to your ancestry, of course." Doreon continued to stare at him without uttering a word. "Did you think that the king had chosen you, a little boy, moreover the son of a man convicted of treason, as commander of the army because you know how to do some trick with the sword? Every choice is supported by the council and the lords and we, or rather some, have made your name, alluding to the fact that a young and fre
DoreonThey had camped in a dense forest, the vegetation covering the smoke of the fire they had lit to warm themselves that night. They had successfully hunted a deer that had satiated them for that hard day's journey. In a few days they had managed to reach the border of Haefest. Doreon had pushed the horses almost to the limit to be able to get there as quickly as possible. He knew that Nathan wanted the message delivered as soon as possible and Doreon always obeyed the orders given to him, even if many times he did not like them.He threw the cleaned bone into the fire as he watched his men, chosen by him for the journey, giggling like idiot boys.Doreon had sat on the sidelines, away from his companions, so he couldn't hear what they were telling to each other about so much fun. Not that he wanted to or cared. He looked at them through the flames of the fire that was placed between them, like a wall placed between Dor
