It was hard for Alves to put his thoughts together. It was quite a difficult task to align his thoughts at that moment. There were so many things going on in his mind, but the greatest of them all was,
DID GRANDPA KNOW ABOUT THE MONEY?
He shook his head slowly. That didn't seat right in his mind. It was as though he needed to make a rethink.
IF HE DOES, WHY DID HE HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL HIS DEATH TO TELL ME ABOUT IT?
He couldn't provide an answer for that question either. He opined that he would be able to answer a question with another one.
IF HE DOESN'T KNOW ABOUT THE MONEY, WHY IS THIS LETTER ADDRESSED AS THE ONE I GOT FROM THE MANAGER OF MAVELIK?
It was as though his head would explode. He had gone through a lot for that day to be greeted by such a mystery.
"It's not a compulsion to open it right here. You can take your time. It seems to bring so many memories."
The aged voice came from beside him. He had almost forgotten that he had the old man there with him. He had been so engrossed in the letter.
His fingers were fiddling with the tips of the letter. He jumped on his feet suddenly. He wasn't sure what had just gotten into him. But he felt like he needed to do something.
"Shall I take you home sir?"
He offered.
"I'll enjoy the mildness of this atmosphere for a while. Do not mind this old man. Go ahead and do your thing."
The old man nodded at him. He felt bad leaving the man behind, but he knew he couldn't remain standing there. The rays of the sun had turned orange. It was a matter of time before a sheet of darkness would be spread across the sky.
"Thank you, Grandpa. I'll stop by at your place tomorrow."
He bowed at the man who had an old and worn out smile seated in his wrinkled face. Alves hurried away from the man who kept staring at him as he hurried through the garden.
"If I didn't go to keep Casper company before then."
The old man muttered. When he had had enough of staring at Alves, he looked back at the river.
"Taxi!"
Alves called at a cab. The cabbie drove by and he hopped on.
"Vailenstore."
He instructed and the driver put his foot on the gas. While the tyres of the cab glid the bitumen of the fine street, his mind was equally plied by heavy thoughts.
He would look at the letter again and again. For some reason, he was scared to open it. No, not scared, he was nervous. It was as though he was going to find something that would alter his life's direction totally.
He couldn't tell if that feeling was right or not. He used to have such funny feelings whenever strange things would happen. But sometimes, the feelings don't pull through. He was hoping that this moment would be one of those one in a million exceptions.
He shook his head.
I CAN'T OPEN SUCH A LETTER IN A CAB. I SHOULD FIND A QUIET PLACE, WHERE I WOULD BE ALONE.
He didn't get an idea of where he would go yet. He remembered that he could never go to Charles' place for the night. He didn't want to bring to mind the ugly experience.
It was strange and fluttering to go through a great deal of emotional roller coaster between the noon and night of one day. Even if he paid an astrologer, they could never had seen this coming.
The cab pulled over at the jewellery store and he got off. He almost forgot to pay. He hurried towards the store and entered.
His eyes scurried around as soon as he stepped into the store.
"Yes. There she is."
He was lucky to find the person he was looking for at that moment. But immediately the lady looked in the direction and saw him, a realisation dawned on him.
"Wait a moment."
He tried to rewind to the part where he saw Laura getting a head from a strange man. Though the memory was hurting, but he wanted to get a particular picture of that memory. Just a fragment.
But he couldn't get what he wanted.
"No way I lost it. No way."
He pressed his hand to his pocket and sighed. He could feel the small carton of the necklace in his pocket. He gulped and puffed.
"I couldn't had lost fifteen million just like that. What loan could pay that back?"
He sighed then corrected the weird expression which he was wearing. He walked briskly to the lady who smiled genuinely at him,
"You are back sir. Welcome. Do you want to get something else for your ---"
"I want a refund. I don't need the necklace anymore. Please can you do that for me?"
Don't ask him. He had no idea what he was doing. But one thing was clear, if he didn't get to the root of the money, he didn't want to take a cent out of it.
THERE'S ENOUGH TROUBLE IN MY LIFE ALREADY.
He said to himself. He had gone out of his way to try to get Laura back. But now that she didn't want to find her way back, he could reflect on how carelessly he had acted.
"Sir, I'm afraid we can't do that? Why the sudden change of mind?"
The lady looked quite concerned, but at the same moment, she was trying not to lose her touch of professionalism.
Alves didn't care about either of those. All he wanted was the money back.
"Please reverse the money. Whatever fine you would get from me, I'll pay. Even if I can't get the money, I'll pay in installments. I have a few --"
"It's better you walk out of this store now that I'm still nice to you. Do you want me to throw you out?"
Alves was stunned when the tone of the lady suddenly changed.
"What..."
He muttered. Who could had thought that she could change so easily towards him.
"Were you nice to me only because I purchased a --"
"I'm calling the security right away. How dare you take the classy necklace, make us lose face to richer women only to return it. Do you want to die?"
Alves was too astonished to say a word. He couldn't find the word even if he wanted to.
They had created so much attention that fellow shoppers were beginning shoot him deriding glares.
"I'll take the necklace."
A rich feminine voice came from behind them.
THAT VOICE SOUNDS FAMILIAR.
Alves could swear. He had heard that voice. Not once, not twice. He was nervous to look back. Before he could, the owner of the voice had gotten to him.
"Gentleman please step aside for a woman of class."
The woman called. From her cologne, and her voice. He could tell who it was. He was nervous to turn.
MADAM!!!
Alves was quite puzzled by the fact that Madam couldn't tell that he was the one from his back view. If it was the other way round, Alves would had known she was the one. He could even tell by the way she turn her neck whenever she was going to hop into a discourse which she wasn't invited to in the first place. Before Alves could choose what to do; whether to avoid her or turn to face her. He felt a force which shoved him to the side. He crashed heavily into the nearest wall, almost breaking an arm. It was sudden and ruthless. "How dare you stand in the way of our Madam." Came the voice of one of the two bouncers who had thrown him out of Casper's earlier that day. While it was raining. That got on his nerve. He didn't plan to hide his face any longer. There were quite a number of thoughts going on in his mind. WHAT IF I WAS A RICH MAN, WOULD HE HAD SHOVED ME AWAY LIKE THAT? HE HAD NO IDEA WHO I WAS, AND PUSHED ME OUT OF THE WAY IN SUCH A ROUGH MANNER? Then he remembered that i
Even though Alves knew that there was no point struggling with the cops, yet he tried to put up a fight. He was quite a realistic person, but at that moment, logic had nothing on him. He was so pained and pissed off that he just wanted to exchange fists. In his mouth was,"Bullshit! Bullshit!! Fucking Bullshit!!!"He took beatings. Several punches in his face. His cheeks folding in at the effect of the angry fists. To think that police men could be this brutal towards a SUSPECT left him speechless. Literally. Both sides of his mouth had blood trailing off. He could feel pain in his nose. He must have broken it at the ruthless contacts. He was shoved into the van of the cops before he could have himself a moment to think. He should ask them who sent them. He had an idea who it was. But it was strange. He knew Madam to be plain whenever she wanted to attack him. She had nothing to lose, so she didn't make attempts hiding her true color. He could remember vividly that Madam humiliate
Alves watched and observed closely the look on Madam's face when she had a taste of the sumptuous mucus grilled with blood. What crawled up her face was more than shock. It was as though she had seen more than a ghost. Alves didn't know when last he felt so soothed and happy after these long years. Seeing that look on Madam face was more than Utopia to him. Of course he was a realistic person. He knew what he has just brought upon himself by going to that length. He knew what was bound to happen. He knew that there would be a shower of more and more misery on him. Yet, he allowed himself to bask in the strong rays of those soothing and intoxicating feelings teasing his nerves. Before he gets drenched and drown.Suddenly he noticed Madam losing her balance and was falling away. She collapsed. She must have been very irritated. Alves knew that she would never get over something like this. He had just stepped on the tail of a cobra. While Madam was falling away, the two cops from ear
If there was light, it might had been a different story. But the fact that there was no light complicated things. The first thing Alves felt was a heavy punch in his stomach. He wished he anticipated it. If he did anticipate, his sense and mind would had been ready for such ruthless impact. But he wasn't. That was one of the benefits of light which he was suffering from in that unbecoming state. "Pass him here."He felt a very rough hand pull his leg, snatching him from the chest of a burly man. He heard his trouser rip at the snatch. He hoped that it was only his trousers that was ripped at that rough pull. "Give daddy a kiss..."A smelly breath washed across his face, denying him a natural breath for about three seconds. The breath came with a pool of saliva spurting all over his face. As if that was not enough, he felt rough hands clapping at both sides of his face. For a moment, all he could hear after the hard slaps were echoes ringing in his ears. It was as though he was th
Alves' eyelids slowly paved to reveal his weak eyes. The strong rays of light from the illuminant hanging in the ceiling above him was too much for his eyes to withstand. His eyes shut at once. But then the voices and mutters coming from every corner of the room nudged him to give it another try. This time when he opened his eyes, he looked to his side. Deciding not to look straight at the blinding lights. Though the vision wasn't making sense in the first place... all he could see was hues and silhouettes. The willingness to know what was happening and where he was, gave life to pictures forming in his mind. His heart became vibrant aiding the mind. They were several men dressed in blue suits everywhere he looked in the room. He tried to push his body up to sit, but he felt the pangs of pain writhing in his body. He couldn't keep up the action. His graon had brought attention to him. He was in a hospital. "Boss... Sir... are you alright?""He is awake.""Boss is awake."BOSS?Al
Alves was seated in the extrinsically furnished living room of his apartment. After he left the hospital, the manager had taken him to the tower which he bought while Alves was still in Coma. The MANGRID tower was the costliest building across the continent. It was known for its extravagant interiors and breathtaking apartments. Ordinary business men and women could never dream of getting close to the building let alone renting it. It cost trillions. But overnight, a dejected son-in-law, whipped it up. As a random purchase. Yet he wasn't moved by the building...Alves' mind was occupied. He had so many things to set in place. One of the most important things was to make Madam Casper pay dearly for all she had done to him. He still had the huge money to worry about but he didn't care anymore. He had decided to make the best of it. He wasn't the weak hearted man he used to be. If the manager had not spoken to him about spending the money, he had already made up his mind as soon as h
"What's the status of the contract? Did Manuel get back to you yet?"Madam asked, staring at Simeon who was alerted as soon as the question hit him. "I couldn't get to him directly. I had to go through the P.A. as usual. She said that there are still things to attend to internally."Simeon explained, making sure to stress the point. Madam looked away from him. Herself and all her children were gathered in the big living room of Casper mansion. They were there to give a report. An internal report before they'd take it to the board members of the company. Casper built a company which had grown to become one of the best in the Grimming Hills. The company named after his name had retained its fame and status for couple decades, until Madam Casper became involved in the administration. Ever since she was given a post in the company, by Casper, the company had began to deteriorate, losing its fame and status. The company almost went bankrupt if it wasn't for the sudden intervention of C
"I have just three minutes here."Alves announced, gazing coldly at Madam who was still having a hard getting her acts together. She still couldn't bring herself to accepting the conspicuous fact which was set before her eyes. "And I'll be straight to the point."He added."What do you think you are doing, Alves? From where did you hire this riff riffs? How would you even pay them? Did you really put yourself at the mercy of loan sharks just to come threaten us? I always knew that you were dumb, but I had no idea that you could be this stupid."Simeon lashed out at Alves. Alves glared at him. He knew too well what Simeon was doing. "Boss give me a word, and I'll fuck him up."Villian had turned to Alves, seeking his approval to carryout the pact. Alves turned to Villain and chuckled softly,"Let the poor lad be. He's only trying to kiss up to the ass of his mom. Don't take that away from him."Alves replied coldly, making sure to look Simeon in the eyes as he said to words. Simeon g
