The walk to the secret meeting floor of the Great Nobles in the Archive's building was taking forever.
War is coming.
Archduchess Klare knew that better than anyone else. She had tried to avoid it but it was no use. Voyne was playing the entire Circle like a game of chess.
That man.
He had knowledge that was both forbidden and supposed to be forgotten. Soul signs? Only select Nobles apart from the Great Nobles knew that it existed. For him to know that, it chilled her to think from where he could have gotten that information. He then had the audacity to demand a blanket pardon and permission to use their forces to eliminate the Shards.
He was the reason she had visited the Archive the last time and now today. The last time was when he had mentioned the soul signs. She had rushed here to make sure that the Legend of the Goddess Benevolent had not been stolen. When she found it there, it was both relieving and disturbing. Relieving because in addition to the knowledge of the soul signs, there was one other forbidden knowledge in that book that Voyne must not know. It was disturbing because now, she did not know the source of his information.
Did a Great Noble betray the Circle? No, I shouldn't think of that.
Now she was here again for a meeting of the Seven. There were growing concerns among people of the different regions that their rulers weren't doing enough to protect them. On one hand, they did not have the strength to stop the Shards and on the other hand, they could not just roll over for Voyne because he had promised to defeat the Shards.
She knew that someone was pulling them like strings. But what could she do?
She wished she was free of all this responsibility. She thought of Sophia, who she just met. They were of the same age, yet Sophia was freer to do what she wished. She sighed.
She eventually reached the room and discovered she was the last of the Seven to arrive.
"Apologies for my lateness, My Lords. Let's begin."
"Honoured Nobles, We are here to discuss our next steps about the Shard problem." Archduke Huften said.
"We have three options available to us: First, diplomacy. Secondly, military intervention. Thirdly, We resort to…Voyne and his Church" He continued.
"Let's not forget, My Lords, options two and three are basically war. Can we afford that?" Klare said
"What we cannot afford is to let our people continue dying" Archduke Manning of Garth said, bitterly. His region, along with Rhyne, had been the most hit of all of the regions.
"I am tired of conducting mass burials. I want my people to look back on my rule and remember me as the Noble that took action, not the one that sat arms folded, when his people were threatened."
"What do you suggest?" Huften said
"Option three" Manning replied.
"Three? We can't go begging to someone below us! Option two is what I have been suggesting." Archduke Revner said.
"Option two isn't pratical." Archduke Orrbi said to the gathering. He turned to Klare "Voyne did say that they were reincarnated in human bodies. Hence they must possess a certain….intellect. Can't they be reasoned with?"
"Reason? After all this destruction? We are long past that!" Revner said.
"If we are to reason, we should reason with Voyne then." Archduke Juggen said.
"The First Seven would be disappointed to see that their descendants have dishonored their legacy by seeking help from….low lifes. What of our honour?" Huften said
"Our honor does not return life to dead people! You are wrong. The First Seven would be proud instead that in time of need we prioritized our people." Juggen replied
"We could use the Relic against them." Revner said
There was a pause. Everyone looked at Revner.
"T-The Relic?" Klare said.
"Isn't that forbidden?" Orrbi said.
"It would be forbidden if we were using it against each other or for evil. The vote has to be unanimous." Revner said.
"Can we even use that? I am not sure the Order would allow us take it." Archduke Soran said.
"They have to. It is a holy decree." Revner replied.
"We might even kill ourselves with Voyne if we use that thing" Juggen said.
"Talking it out is the safest way to deal with this situation" Orrbi restated his thoughts.
Manning sighed.
"To be honest, I do not care how this issue is resolved. I only care that it is solved. I only suggested option three because it is the only one that looks like an option to me. Diplomacy? Not practical. Military force? Our combined force just makes an ant in their eyes. If we cooperated with Voyne, maybe we could finally survive this." He said.
"Do you want to know my next program I have scheduled? It is a speech I am to deliver at a mass burial. Do not you think I am tired of those?" He finished. You could see the pain in his eyes.
"We are here to find a solution to that and we won't leave till it is sorted" Klare said.
The secret session continued.

Sophia had been focusing on reading the Legend for the past few days. It was a collection of all the notable things the Goddess had done in great detail. One act after the other. It was also written poem-style and that made it quite boring. She had to fight sleep every time she opened the book. And only she out of their group could read the ancient language.
On the 3rd day after the Archive break in, she was on the beginning of another poem in the book. The War of the Gods.
It was a detailed description of the war of Shards she had read about in the Archive in the scroll Chronicles of the Age of Nobles.
She felt like skipping the entire poem already since she had a general overview of what happened from the scroll. Her eyelids were very heavy.
She read the beginning of the next line. What she saw made her sit up straight and open her eyes.
The Benevolent Goddess, Saintess Jerle–
Jerle?
Why did that name sound familiar?

Jerle?Where had she heard that word before?Jerletown. Her eyes widened. A city named after a Shard? Was it a coincidence Voyne was moving there?Just then, a knock was heard on the door "Sophia?""Come in please."Luthen entered."I just discovered something" He said "It is not that big of a discovery though.""Go on." She said."Look at this." He pointed to the symbol of the Soul Church "And this." He now pointed to the symbol on the cover of the Legend. In each case, a seven pointed star symbol was seen."I do not know if that is useful, but there's definitely a connection between the Church and that book."Sophia sat down."Thank you for sharing this, Luthen. It was decided that Sophie should remain and that the boys should go.She was well connected and could inform them of any recent happenings in Rhyne. She could also protect herself, since, she was a Shard. Plus, most of their offensive power would have greater use putting a stop to Voyne. She argued this so much that Kane thought she sounded a little too eager to stay. Of course, Somen had no issue with the last point.First, he had to go see Edram. He was a little anxious as to how the boy would react. He entered the inn and was first scolded for leaving the boy unattended all this while. How would he explain that he never knew this kid before? He would look like a creep. They eventually directed him to Edram's room. The boy looked at Kane, burst into tears and ran to hug him. Kane wasn't good at emotional reassurances, so Edram cried a while. Thereafter, Kane said goodbye and left more coins for the innkeeper. He could not leave without the elder lady admonish

At the Hause NoblesseThe death toll still kept climbing. The Nobles were forced to call Voyne to another Circle hearing. When Renée and Voyne entered the hearing hall, the Nobles, unlike before, were not engaged in mirthful conversation. There were whispers instead. Whispers that betrayed their fear and hatred.Voyne, on the other hand, did not seem to mind the negative disposition of the Nobles. He had eyes for only one of their number. Sophia Augusten. He looked at her. She, holding a wine glass, also looked at him.He picked a glass of wine from a passing waiter and approached Sophia.“My Lady.” He said. She looked at him with a blank face, her enmity and sense of duty fighting inside. She had not told the boys she was going to confront Voyne. It was selfish to do this. But she wanted answers.“Archbishop Voyne.” She finally said.“You look–” Voyne began.“Let&rs

Mother?Sophia had to skip the Circle session. She just wasn’t herself since the conversation. When Voyne called her Mother, something woke in her. It was almost like she was used to hearing him say it.It woke some memories that she did not knew she had. Some felt a lot like they were hers while most felt…off. Like she borrowed those memories from someone else.In one of her memories, she was a child, somewhere. On some wide street, playing, holding a paper fan. There were lots of sounds, like a festival or some occasion going on.Some cloaked people approached her. With the exact same cloaks that the Soul Church adherents wore. The one in front of them knelt in front of her. He took off his hood and she looked into his eyes. She knew that face, knew those eyes.Voyne, looking exactly the same as the present day, took her hand and kissed it with a greeting.“Hail, Mother.”*******<

A few days later.Voyne had to travel to Osyna again. These repeated meetings was making him develop a fondness for the city which had once been a stronghold of those who wanted to oppose him.He played with it in his hand. The High Council’s invitation. He knew they would eventually bend. It was all a matter of time. He shredded it.He could not stop a small smile. The last time he was this pleased was when he first saw Sophie at the trial hall of the Circle. She would come too. Eventually.*******At the hall of the Circle, Voyne stood in the middle with the now unlabeled box as he had done before. Except this time only the seats of the Great Nobles were filled. Normally, there were multiple venues they could have used instead like the Archive. Why they chose here was up to them.Renée wasn’t here because she wasn’t important enough to be. The boys walked around the city. Under the pretext of leaving some of his aura, Luthen had managed to try every food stall they came across. Kane and Somen also had lunch. The sun was now beginning to set. Kane decided that he did not have an appetite for an evening confrontation with anybody so he suggested something.“The sun’s setting. It’s late. I think we can turn of our auras now.” He said.“So we won’t be tracked on our way home?” Luthen said.“You’re catching on.”Luthen looked offended. They marched back to the inn.*******They had done it. They had managed to make her angry. She had been tracking them for a while now, their auras pointing in the directions they had taken. Kane was finding that his new swords were much better than the previous ones. For one, they did not break. They also did not limit the amount of soul energy he could put in one strike. He could also change their size at will. Overall, they did a far better job. However, he wasn’t quite used to using them, so there was a lot of unnecessary damage to the temple building which only served to infuriate his opponent. He could tell that this place was important to her. From the way she fought, he determined that she was manipulating forces. That made her a very tricky opponent since; he had to put some force into his swings and plus he was always under the control of one force, gravity. He had to use his Null ability more frequently now, further frustrating the sister. But she was adapting.Again she increased the force of gravity on him. He could barely move.“Null.” he said through gritted teeth. The force disappeared. This was tiring. He saw an openin

In truth, Somen was satisfied that he just parted from Luthen and Kane.He was quite happy that there was no one to restrict him. He embraced his violent tendencies.Yes! Time to find an opponent. But Jerletown was a city of pilgrims and priests, so there was little to no violence there. The whole city had begun to bore him. He came to the holy site, a waterfall. He could see pilgrims praying at the waterfall or carrying some water for good luck. All this for a dead Shard? He would never understand. But, it wasn’t the waterfall, or its pilgrims that caught his attention. There was an incredible presence coming from behind the waterfall. He couldn’t pass through the river created by the waterfall directly because of all the pilgrims around. Kane had advised against unnecessary attention. So he used a roundabout route. There it was. “You’re our guests.” A guard said in scorn as she shoved Jonelle and Reese into a small room. “Diplomats.” She added laughing, still in scorn before she resumed her post just outside of the room. The guard still remembered what was told to her a few minutes ago by the General.Don’t let them escape. That command carried an inherent threat in it.Reese, as well as Jonelle remembered also because they were there, bound. The room they were kept was the only thing to be thankful for in this mess. It was small, of course, but it had far more pleasures than your average prison, including a proper toilet, a bed and some aesthetic.“These mainland Shards couldn’t even identify the traitor in their ranks.” Reese said. He wasn’t angry, he was amused instead at how everything played out.“You should have gone with them.” Jonelle said.Reese turned to face her, sighing as he did so. One minute, everyone is eating at the table (mostly them) and the next they felt a barrier enclosing them and saw Kane draw his sword. The next minute, their hostess suddenly transformed to another person.“Who said I had to explain anything?” She smiled eerily reminiscent of her adopted son. Luthen didn’t not fail to notice this. This smile is just like–!!He thought. The mental image of Voyne was conjured in his head.“What have you done to Sophie?!!” He raged.“You’re about to find out.” She still sat, confidently and carelessly. “I don’t think so. The result of trying to contain a Shard’s power in the body of an unworthy vessel.”The rest looked at her.“A Shard’s constitution is especially suited to contain the massive amounts of soul energy they produce. If any Shard, intentionally or otherwise, tries to forcibly transfer a substantial amount of the soul energy they produce to anyone else who is not a Shard, a living Relic will result.”“So a living Relic is like a Relic except the vessel is human?” Reese asked.“Yes. These individuals are characterized by unstable mental conditions or other mental issues and a short lifespan.” She turned to Luthen. “You
