Such a bother. he thought.
Though Voyne had spared no expense in making his plane as comfortable as possible, the flight from Dryne to Osyna was a very long one and he was starting to get bored. Ordinarily, he would have taken the flight in smaller segments, stopping in different nations for tours or to visit his manic followers. But, he just could not delay the United Noble’s summons, not if he wanted everything to go according to plan.
“How are we doing, Viven?” he asked while reclining on a chair, directing his question to a red cloaked figure with a seven pointed star on her chest.
The eyes of the figure went unfocused, as if viewing another image. “We are right on schedule, sir.” She said after a minute. She took one worried look at him. “How are we going to convince them they are real? How do we prove that they are dangerous?” He smirked. Even though she had seen it before, it always chilled her. His smirk seemed like one of an all-knowing god looking down on ignorant, mere mortals. She wasn’t too far off course. He wasn’t a god though. “That is not a problem.” he said, waving his hand dismissively. He settled back in his chair confidently.Nothing could go wrong.
He would finally be reunited with Mother after all this while.
And then all would be one.
*******Luthen was a solitary figure. He thought of himself as peculiar amidst the mundane. The diamond among rocks.
The world would stop for him, he thought. He remained separate, different from the ordinary.
But no, this wasn’t pride. He could not just put a finger on it. But he was convinced nonetheless that others like him existed. A chosen group. Special.
It was deep, the conviction. Coursed through him like his own blood.
Probably, subconsciously, he bore the weight of destiny.
Maybe–
“Good morning. I would like two chocolate ice creams with two scoops each” A girl interrupted his thought train.
He sighed. Destiny would have to wait. He adjusted his apron and cap.
“Coming up!”
“Here’s your order.”
“Thank you.”
The girl left the shop and handed one of the ice creams to a guy and they walked off together, holding hands. They were mostly likely on a date.
Luthen had no close friends. Except Maron.
When anyone except for him had tried to get him to hang out, he always refused. Maron could be considered his best friend.
Well, he had only one friend really.
Speaking of which, Maron and I need to go get those cards soon.*******
He got home from his part-time job at an ice-cream shop and paused. It was ironic that though he considered himself above others, he still was an ordinary ice cream shop attendant.
More like really important part-time worker. He thought again.
He opened his front door and saw his sister poke out her head from a room to check who it was. On seeing him, she ran inside.
Almost immediately, his mum called out from the direction his sister went. “Luthen?” “Evening mum.” He replied. He did not wait for his mum to say anything else and stormed up to his room.So tired. He got on his bed and slept through the evening, missing dinner. ******* Meanwhile, Voyne’s plane touched the tarmac. He got on the plane’s stairs, followed by Renée, his personal assistant and the woman he had called Viven. At the bottom of the stairs waiting were more people with hooded cloaks similar in design to Viven’s. Except Viven’s was red. “Welcome, Archbishop.” said the lady, the leader of the cloaks as she unveiled her head. “Welcome to Osyna.” Renée was startled. To think that the ‘religion’ founded by Voyne – The Church of the Emancipation also known as the Soul Church – could have followers where sentiment against the Church was strong was incredible. She originally thought they were going to check in to a hotel for the night. The city of Osyna had been particularly vocal about their opposition to the church. The United Nobles deciding to hold his trial here was basically condemning him. Yet, Voyne didn’t seem perturbed.
I have been his assistant this long yet there is much I still do not know.Voyne was definitely an enigma. “Your journey was long and you must rest for tomorrow, First Priest.” continued the lady, addressing Voyne. “Come my lord, we have made arrangements.” Renée wasn’t into any of the religious rubbish. She definitely did not feel comfortable staying with Voyne’s overly enthusiastic fan group. “Voyne– ” She began. “You will address the Archbishop properly, woman!!” A cloak raised its hood and addressed her in a manly, brutish voice. Their leader did not say anything but looked at her coldly. Viven emanated an angry aura. Voyne smirked again. That smirk. He is enjoying this. She looked round and realized that she could not win. There was bound to be someone here with an Ability, probably something very unpleasant. Voyne had a knack for gathering those kinds of people to himself. Gathering her composure, she started again.“Your Holiness, May I be excused to a hotel?”
“No, you may not.” Replied the same brutish male “Arrangements have been made– ” he cut off. A look. Voyne looked at him with a smile. However, the cloaked brute did not reciprocate. Instead, the fear written on his face was obvious. Tension rose, so thick you could feel it on your skin. “I believe she did not address you.” “I am sorry, Archbishop. I–”“Renée will stay where she likes tonight. The Church tolerates others.”
Renée decided to just take the win, though she did not like the tone of the word ‘others’.
Kind of sounded like trashThe Soul Church was infamous for its radical beliefs. They emphasized on rooting out an evil they termed ‘Shards’ who were supposed to be a group of humans that were the reincarnations of the Seven Primordial Evils. So their ‘god’ decided to send – of all people – Voyne to root them out.
That’s the ‘reason’ Voyne formed The Church and gathered together those with Abilities.Gathering Ability users was sure to attract some attention. Worse still, he had a preference for Soul Aspect Abilities, the rarest known ability type. The United Nobles, the umbrella organization of the Nobles, the rulers of various nations, were especially suspicious of such activity. So, they summoned him to explain himself. If he hadn’t shown up, they would have labeled The Church a terrorist group and exterminated it. It would be hard for him to go along with his plan
It all sounded like a load of nonsense to Renée – the Shards, gods, Voyne. But she knew Voyne was hiding something sinister.
It is always a different angle with him. I wonder if I have to quit this job.She shook her uneasiness off and left.Related Chapters

CHAPTER TWO 2 days later Luthen woke with a dull throbbing headache. He actually expected it since he had played games late into the night. He only could do this because he had the day off today. He checked the time and discovered that he woke up late enough that breakfast should have been stone cold.If there’s any.Dressing up and getting downstairs, he discovered that his parents did not go to work today. Typical of the middle class to take leaves every now and then. Then again, in this world, there was little poverty in its truest sense. The poorest people had full bellies and just enough money to cover basic expenses like education and rent, though they did not have much holidays. He had it better. His parents fell into the upper middle class so they could take much longer leaves. He found his toast on the table, not as cold as he expected. He started munching with the morning’s breaking news on t

All the while the headache did not let go. However, his focus was on finding his friend. He searched till he found a piece of Maron’s torn shirt held down by an enormous piece of rubble. The trial had begun.“Your claim is the existence of beings called Shards. Do you have any evidence to support your claim?” Revner asked. His stress on the word ‘beings’ was sarcastic. Revner would rather believe a liar than this nonsense.“Exalted Nobles, I have to admit that I did not have any proof of my claim.”“So, you admit that you’ve spread lies to cause chaos?” Juggen said.“Like I said, I did not have any proof of my claim. Until this morning.”Voyne directed to a holographic screen. On it showed Luthen kneeling on the rubble amidst fires and bodies and roaring with red, dripping hands. Many Nobles averted their heads. Others clenched their fist in anger.“What is this? When did this happen?! Who did this?!!”Revner was enraged.I have your attention now. Voyne smirked. His plan was coming together.“One of them has come

That created some noise.A female nurse soon came in.There was a pause. Her eyes widened and she screamed and fell.Luthen was offended.Do I look that ugly?“The demon……” she said to the officials rushing in. They all stopped at the door for a moment, reluctant to come in. Then they finally did.The demon had awoken. One of them stepped forward towards Luthen.“Luthen Vasen?” the official asked rhetorically. Kane started training Luthen to control his power the next day at the safe house.“Soul energy is like fuel with a fuse. If you use too much of it at once, you are no different from a bomb with one-time use. Burning too much of it at once may also damage your body.”“That’s why I kept blacking out. And the headaches.”“Exactly. The trick is to keep it flowing in a controlled manner like a stream. To master this, you must first master your soul. Your emotions. Be in control.”“Form your energy into a ball. Focus it.” He continued.Luthen tried focusing his energy into a ball. It started forming and swirling calmly and then violently till–“Null.” Kane said, easily dispersing the energy.“It is not so easy. How do you focus yours?” said Luthen after trying for the 41st time“I focus my energy through my sword–”

Luthen went to see his family at the detention center while sticking to the shadows. He saw his wanted posters all over his home town. Dead or alive with a very attractive bounty. Sophia was not lying. He came to the location of his house and faced what used to be the door. All that remained of a fine estate was the charred remains of wood, mortar and metal left behind by those angry cultists or the mob they had stirred up. He said silent thanks to Sophia for protecting his family. This location too had not been spared the onslaught of his wanted posters, some of them defaced with the word “murderer” written in red. One could not turn without spotting them somewhere. On a street pole with his poster by his left side, were two drunken men talking. One with a bottle and the other, equally drunken but not holding his. He listened, hoping to get a piece of information or two.“Oi, what–hic–would you do if you catch–hic–guy?&

For the mall explosion or the hospital?” Her father joked dryly.“They are going fine. We are nearly through with rebuilding, though we’ve yet to catch the perpertrator.” Her father said and sipped his tea.The perpertrator. Luthen. She poured hers.“I am sorry for hiding the truth from you. However, I needed you to focus on the Circle session. If I had told you, you would be distracted.”“It is okay, Dad.” She sipped.“I think it is shady though. Meanwhile, Kane took a walk. He had decided to gather information on his own since being alone in the safe house for too long was tiring on its own, even for the patience of a martial artist. They made a pretty good team, he thought; Sophia focused on the high-and-mighty, Luthen on the normal people and he on the underworld. The safe house was hidden in plain sight; in a residential area. So he took the common road and found himself at a commercial area after walking a bit. All the while, people would stop to observe the oddity he was; unusually tall – about six-and-a-half feet and loose Hrunnan swordsman clothes. He walked into an alley. This one was no different from the others. Damp and dirty with the smell of alcohol everywhere. Kane could not be more thankful for his hard sole shoes. The broken bottles around there did bite. He had to do this however, because the path to the criminal underworld always began with the right dark alley. The persons there

They had appeared at the exact moment they were about to commence their mission, as if they’d known what would have happened. Now she had to explain everything to Lord Voyne, how she had failed to prepare the island for his coming. He wouldn’t punish them, but she hated to fail her missions. Also, she hadn’t seen Maron display his abilities to her. She wanted to see them so bad.It wasn’t fair that the other Apostates who had been paired with Maron had gotten to see his abilities before her, his girlfriend. So not f

Back at the inn, Luthen tried to contemplate their next move. They had now checked all of the holy sites in Jerletown. They still had zero idea of the Relic’s location. And now Voyne’s generals had come to the island. They had to move fast. But, what if the Saintess hid it somewhere else than the capital? No, Voyne would not have made such a big play. The purpose of him sending his subordinates to cause a ruckus was mostly likely to announce his presence on the island. There only option was to team up with those Shards they had fought earlier, if only they could believe them.Jonelle and a healthy looking Reese suddenly appeared in Kane’s room. The sudden presences attracted both Luthen and Kane.“So, what about it? Come to finish the job? You are outnumbered.” Kane declared confidently.“You are the outnumbered fool. Ask your friend.” Reese said referring to Somen .Somen had told them all about the

Don’t just bury us while you are on it though.” Ari said.Maron removed his hood and raised his hand in the direction of the sky just above the city center.“Plato’s Primitives: Pyramid.”A pyramid shape made of luminescent blue material appeared and grew to cover a wide area, it flat surface pointing downward.People panicked. This sight evoked a sense of familiarity in Maron. Where had he seen something like this before?“Soldiers! The bells began to ring all over the city.A Barrier appeared over the soldiers’ heads as they all poured their soul energy into it. It resisted the downward motion of the

In truth, Somen was satisfied that he just parted from Luthen and Kane.He was quite happy that there was no one to restrict him. He embraced his violent tendencies.Yes! Time to find an opponent. But Jerletown was a city of pilgrims and priests, so there was little to no violence there. The whole city had begun to bore him. He came to the holy site, a waterfall. He could see pilgrims praying at the waterfall or carrying some water for good luck. All this for a dead Shard? He would never understand. But, it wasn’t the waterfall, or its pilgrims that caught his attention. There was an incredible presence coming from behind the waterfall. He couldn’t pass through the river created by the waterfall directly because of all the pilgrims around. Kane had advised against unnecessary attention. So he used a roundabout route. There it was. Carved into the rock from which the water spilled over to make the fall, was a cave entranc

Kane was finding that his new swords were much better than the previous ones. For one, they did not break. They also did not limit the amount of soul energy he could put in one strike. He could also change their size at will. Overall, they did a far better job. However, he wasn’t quite used to using them, so there was a lot of unnecessary damage to the temple building which only served to infuriate his opponent. He could tell that this place was important to her. From the way she fought, he determined that she was manipulating forces. That made her a very tricky opponent since; he had to put some force into his swings and plus he was always under the control of one force, gravity. He had to use his Null ability more frequently now, further frustrating the sister. But she was adapting.Again she increased the force of gravity on him. He could barely move.“Null.” he said through gritted teeth. The force disappeared. This was tiring. He saw an openin

It was almost like she was used to hearing him say it.It woke some memories that she did not knew she had. Some felt a lot like they were hers while most felt…off. Like she borrowed those memories from someone else.In one of her memories, she was a child, somewhere. On some wide street, playing, holding a paper fan. There were lots of sounds, like a festival or some occasion going on.Some cloaked people approached her. With the exact same cloaks that the Soul Church adherents wore. The one in front of them knelt in front of her. He took off his hood and she looked into his eyes.
