Luthen went to see his family at the detention center while sticking to the shadows. He saw his wanted posters all over his home town. Dead or alive with a very attractive bounty. Sophia was not lying.
He came to the location of his house and faced what used to be the door. All that remained of a fine estate was the charred remains of wood, mortar and metal left behind by those angry cultists or the mob they had stirred up. He said silent thanks to Sophia for protecting his family.
This location too had not been spared the onslaught of his wanted posters, some of them defaced with the word “murderer” written in red. One could not turn without spotting them somewhere. On a street pole with his poster by his left side, were two drunken men talking. One with a bottle and the other, equally drunken but not holding his. He listened, hoping to get a piece of information or two.
“Oi, what–hic–would you do if you catch–hic–guy?” he heard one say to the other
“I’d–hic–collect my bounty and buy all the drinks–hic–this world.” The other replied. “I would–hic–sea rides with only the finest women–hic–finest booze………”
Luthen left them to discuss their vile fantasies.
The detention facility was not hard to locate though it looked unassuming from the outside. Luthen sneaked in to the room where his parents and sister were being held.
He entered the room. They sat on the floor in a circle. There was no visible change in their looks. Again Sophia had helped him.
He was dressed like a Cloak, so they did not really notice him at first.
“Hi dad. Hi mum.” looked
They all froze. Then they stood and looked carefully at him, thinking they were hallucinating. Was it this morning’s meal?
“L–Luthen?”
They could not believe their eyes. They approached him and though his mum hugged him and his sister cried, his father didn’t come closer, though he stood.
“Do not alert the guards.” he tried to calm them
He took a look at his dad. His dad looked at him with conflicted eyes. Is this my son or is he a monster?
“Dad, Do not–”
“Did you do it?”
“Dedan, we just got our son back. Do not spoil this, please.” His mum said crying into her clothes. She believed he did it. He wasn’t disappointed. He had half expected his parents to throw stones at him or curse or report his presence to the guards–that would have been messy. His sister, Anda looked at him with eyes similar to her father’s.
“I did not.” Luthen said, heavily.
“That’s all I needed to hear, son. That is all.” His father said with relief and hugged his son. His sister’s eyes looked less conflicted and she hugged him also.
“You can’t stay for long.” said his father regretfully after a long hug. “You need to go.”
“I know.” Luthen replied. He was on the verge of tears.
“Big Bro, come back to us, please.” Anda said.
“I will.” Luthen said with a finality and left.
The Church had successfully upgraded an enemy to an archenemy.
*******
Outside the detention center, Luthen had to process his emotions. He stood in a corner for a while. It was time to be at the next stop. Maron’s grave.
Sophia had also given him the location of the cemetery. Maron was given a heroes burial in the national cemetery. He walked carefully, slowly and with his head bowed, avoided all forms of public transport, partly because he did not want to be recognized and partly because he wanted to honour his fallen friend. He continuously played the memories he could remember of Maron in his head.
This was his first time being in Rhyne’s capital. He had always wanted to go when he was little. The city would have opened its arms to him then. It did not now.
His wanted posters, already a nuisance outside of the capital, was a menace inside. They were everywhere; government office buildings, doors of people’s homes, buses and cars and taxis, street poles any almost any surface had one. Except the ground because it held multiple. Most of them were defaced with various insults.
The walls of the buildings seemed to weigh on him together with his guilt. Their gaze was unwelcoming and cold. Luthen had almost begun to wonder why he came.
The security of the capital was really tight. The City Guard was extremely active, demanding IDs and permits, uncovering hooded civilians and enforcing a mandatory check. However, this was not enough to deter or stop his advancement.
He reached the cemetery and continued his careful, slow walk, almost as if he was afraid of hurting any blade of grass.
Sophia had not given him the exact location of Maron’s grave, but it wasn’t hard to find. Maron was the latest hero of the land to be buried. He was ashamed of not being able to offer something at his grave, but at least Maron wasn’t lacking for offerings. For the first time since the explosion, he cried; the amount of flower pollen and incense at the grave choking him made it easier.
Slowly, softly, savoring each and every tear like it was his last.
*******
Back in the detention center, Luthen’s mum wailed. His father comforted her.
“I know you could feel it too, Morya. Our son has changed, grown.”
“Why would you ask him that, Dedan?” His mother, Morya, asked his father.
“I wanted to know whose side he was. He will be fine. He is stronger than us now.”
*******
Luthen cried.
It helped his grief, strengthened his resolve and resolved his inner chaos. It did good to come here.
He stood and breathed in and out till it was even.
Now to deal with the three scoundrels that had been following him from the detention center.
He turned from facing the grave with his eyes closed and said to no particular direction,
“Come out. It is no use. I know you are here.”

Meanwhile, Kane took a walk. He had decided to gather information on his own since being alone in the safe house for too long was tiring on its own, even for the patience of a martial artist. They made a pretty good team, he thought; Sophia focused on the high-and-mighty, Luthen on the normal people and he on the underworld. The safe house was hidden in plain sight; in a residential area. So he took the common road and found himself at a commercial area after walking a bit. All the while, people would stop to observe the oddity he was; unusually tall – about six-and-a-half feet and loose Hrunnan swordsman clothes. He walked into an alley. This one was no different from the others. Damp and dirty with the smell of alcohol everywhere. Kane could not be more thankful for his hard sole shoes. The broken bottles around there did bite. He had to do this however, because the path to the criminal underworld always began with the right dark alley. The persons there

I know where you are”Three cloaks came out of their hiding places and positioned themselves around him. Two in front and one at his back. He kept his eyes closed. He could see them in the spatial plane. There was a pause. The wind rustled the leaves.“Come.” Luthen said. The cloaks looked at each other, confused as to why Luthen closed his eyes. Then they attacked.Luthen dodged here and there and wasn’t attacking. However, he wasn’t used to fighting with closed eyes so some attacks hit. But with each hit he got better and better. Soon their hits did not connect anymore. Luthen still kept his eyes closed. The Spatial World he was seeing

It would be humiliating if this guy did not turn out to be a Shard. Kane thought. To have to be put in this position by a regular Ability user."Y-You stood up?" His opponent said out of surprise. Kane stood taller than him, but not by much. This guy was over six feet also. He also preferred to fight bare chested, his rippling muscles contrasting with Kane's slimmer build. His battle scars were very evident."Hey! You are using an Ability right?" Kane asked through gritted teeth."Yes. I am." The other replied.Okay then. He needed to survive this and find out if this guy was a Shard. How many of us are there though? When he set out on this mission, he was told by his master that those like him had a sign manifest either at their backs or above their heads. Also, she hadn’t seen Maron display his abilities to her. She wanted to see them so bad.It wasn’t fair that the other Apostates who had been paired with Maron had gotten to see his abilities before her, his girlfriend. So not f

Back at the inn, Luthen tried to contemplate their next move. They had now checked all of the holy sites in Jerletown. They still had zero idea of the Relic’s location. And now Voyne’s generals had come to the island. They had to move fast. But, what if the Saintess hid it somewhere else than the capital? No, Voyne would not have made such a big play. The purpose of him sending his subordinates to cause a ruckus was mostly likely to announce his presence on the island. There only option was to team up with those Shards they had fought earlier, if only they could believe them.Jonelle and a healthy looking Reese suddenly appeared in Kane’s room. This sight evoked a sense of familiarity in Maron. Where had he seen something like this before?“Soldiers! The bells began to ring all over the city.A Barrier appeared over the soldiers’ heads as they all poured their soul energy into it. It resisted the downward motion of the

In truth, Somen was satisfied that he just parted from Luthen and Kane.He was quite happy that there was no one to restrict him. He embraced his violent tendencies.Yes! Time to find an opponent. But Jerletown was a city of pilgrims and priests, so there was little to no violence there. The whole city had begun to bore him. He came to the holy site, a waterfall. He could see pilgrims praying at the waterfall or carrying some water for good luck. All this for a dead Shard? He would never understand. But, it wasn’t the waterfall, or its pilgrims that caught his attention. There was an incredible presence coming from behind the waterfall. He couldn’t pass through the river created by the waterfall directly because of all the pilgrims around. Kane had advised against unnecessary attention. So he used a roundabout route. There it was. Carved into the rock from which the water spilled over to make the fall, was a cave entranc

Kane was finding that his new swords were much better than the previous ones. For one, they did not break. They also did not limit the amount of soul energy he could put in one strike. He could also change their size at will. Overall, they did a far better job. However, he wasn’t quite used to using them, so there was a lot of unnecessary damage to the temple building which only served to infuriate his opponent. He could tell that this place was important to her. From the way she fought, he determined that she was manipulating forces. That made her a very tricky opponent since; he had to put some force into his swings and plus he was always under the control of one force, gravity. He had to use his Null ability more frequently now, further frustrating the sister. But she was adapting.Again she increased the force of gravity on him. He could barely move.“Null.” he said through gritted teeth. The force disappeared. This was tiring. He saw an openin
