Melissa decides to praise Jonas for eating barbecue with a fork while everyone grabs the meat with their hands. “You know what, good thing Josias prefers the fork; it's a lot more hygienic.”
Josias smiles in thanks. “That's what I thought. And by the way, I see the owner of the house slicing a steak. Shall we, Melissa?”
“Only if it's now,” Melissa smiles at Josias, and the two move away from the others. Pamela sits down again, pursing her lips in annoyance. She calls Uélton.
“Hey, you...”
“Uélton, miss.” Uélton tries to be as kind as his friend.
“Uélton, what do you know about this guy?” Pamela tilts her chin towards Josias.
“He showed up at the construction site where I am, demonstrating excellent skill with the hoe, while I was failing, and Seu Romualdo hired him.”
“He is the bricklayer assistant,” The second friend comments, “But, Pamela, let's be fair and acknowledge that he is cute.”
“It doesn't matter if he's cute.” Pamela speaks in an angry tone, looking at the couple, “Our friend Melissa deserves a comrade who is already at the top. And that one won't do.”
Uélton inadvertently ruins Josias's reputation. “Hey, I hope your friend isn't thinking about dating yet! Josias came out of nowhere, claiming he didn't have any clothes on. He just wears sweatpants and a pair of underwear that is already soiled all over. All these clothes you are seeing are borrowed from my brother!”
Pamela and the other friend react with evident disgust and astonishment. What a wretched man! Wearing clothes borrowed from others? What happened?
Uélton continues, “He hasn't explained the reason yet, but it looks like he ran away from home with only his clothes on.”
“What a shame, we need to keep those two away!” Pamela says this as if it was up to her to decide who Melissa should or should not date. She gets up again and goes to the couple, who were chatting amiably leaning against the parapet of the terrace, watching the aerial view of the favela and the dusk.
“Excuse me, guys.” Pamela is already pulling Melissa by the dress, away from Josias, “There are some guys from Saint Gabriel that you need to meet, my friend.”
“I don't need to meet anyone else, Pamela.” Melissa complains in a low tone, just to her friend, “I'm in excellent company.”
“If I wasn’t your friend, I wouldn't be advising you right now. Then you can talk to him again, but let's go downstairs. I guarantee you won't regret it.”
At this moment, a group of four or five boys goes up to the terrace, talking animatedly, in search of food. They are between brown and black, well-groomed, quality clothes, and the attitude of those who live in a better neighborhood. These are the friends Pamela is talking about. She smiles when she sees them.
“Oh, we don't even have to go that far. Look how cute they are, girl!” Pamela smiles widely, poking Melissa in the arm.
One of them, the tallest and with green eyes, who behaved as if he was the leader of the pack, looks in the direction of the girls and smiles sideways when facing Melissa; he likes what he sees. Pamela shivers and reacts in the place of her friend.
“Oh, friend, he liked you! Come on and introduce yourself; I better take advantage of that too.”
Melissa giggles, she asks Josias for permission and goes to answer her friend's request. Josias nods and waits for Melissa to return. However, Melissa barely exchanges three words with the group, and Pamela returns to Josias with a narrow look, a frown. “What are you doing, dude?”
Josias is startled. “What do you mean? I'm not doing anything. Well, I was, talking to Melissa and you interrupted us.”
“Are you trying to do something with my best friend? Yeah, I'll go ahead to say for you forget it. My friend deserves better things in this life and I'm not going to allow her to ruin her life by being with someone like you.”
Josias's eyes widen. What is this crazy woman talking about?
“It seems that there is some mistake. You are speaking as if you know me.”
“I still don't know you better; otherwise I would be more incisive in my judgment. It was enough to know that you are just a bricklayer assistant who barely has anything to wear, that I realized how unworthy you are to her. Do you see there?” She points to Melissa, the boys are around her giving the greatest attention and respect to her, “It is with this type of man that she deserves to be, someone who will take her out of this slum and this miserable life. You have no condition whatsoever to transform her life for the better, so get away from her before she falls in love with you!”
Pamela's harsh words struck Josias, leaving him in shock.
Josias does not understand how a person who barely knows him can afford to express such a negative opinion about him. "Excuse me, miss, but you don't know me well enough for such a heavy and cruel judgment.""And is there anything more interesting for me to know?" The question comes out of Pamela's mouth laden with disdain.Josias, faced with the situation, decides to shut up. He looks over Pamela's shoulder and sees Uélton talking to Melissa and Pamela's other friend. Uélton "cleans" his hands in the shorts he's wearing and then with the same "clean" hand takes more slices of meat to eat.Josias narrows his view, considering that if Pamela knows about the few clothes he has, it was thanks to Uélton. Why did Uélton tell this despicable girl that he had nothing to wear to come here? Would it have been unintentionally, or on purpose?Upset, and unable to say goodbye to Melissa (she is well involved in the conversation, and the bo
The next day, Josias wakes up, stretching in bed, covered by the thin sheet from the waist down. He looks at Uélton's brother's jeans and T-shirt and gives a smile that says “I'm smiling so I don't cry”. Josias hopes that Uélton has not thrown his clothes away; otherwise he will have to work on the construction site with his brother's clothes! After putting on his clothes and going down to brush his teeth, Josias goes to breakfast in Teodoro's kitchen. He's just finished straining the coffee. Teodoro gets distracted by Josias's clothes and misses the strainer, leaving coffee spilling on the table.“Oops!” Teodoro realizes the error and returns to concentrate. “Good morning, son! How was the party? They let you borrow their clothes.”“I was the one who left mine at Uélton's. I hope he didn't throw it out of anger.”Teodoro finishes straining the coffee and closes the thermos. He takes it
Uélton puts both hands on Josias's wrist, wanting to get away from him. Josias still presses his friend's body against the wall without plastering it, with a force he thought he didn't have.“Let go of me, man, this wall is scratching my back,” Uélton asks.“Answer my question, man.” Josias is tough and domineering.“No, I didn't want to make you look bad.” Uélton is practically whining, “I spoke without thinking. If Pamela was making a conspiracy to get you away from Melissa, I'm not part of this. Let me go, man; I thought we were friends.”Josias lets go of Uélton's shoulder and he relieves himself. He was already thinking he was going to get punched by Josias.“Thanks, buddy. And I'm sorry for the fail.”Romualdo appears after listening to the last lines. “Guys, good morning. Is everything okay here?”“It's okay, Seu Romualdo.&
Josias returns to Teodoro's building very satisfied with the first payment. It wasn't much, but it was enough for a few purchases that he intended to do today. When he told Teodoro, the landlord was thrilled with the younger man. “Now, set sail for the Downtown and buy some clothes, my boy. I don't know how you haven't caught the flu yet.”Josias believed that the fact that he was shirtless only strengthened his resistance to the cold. It was all a matter of habit, even the fact that he slept naked. So, when he was in Downtown, he thought twice about whether he bought or not some underwear. He decided to buy it because you never know. Better not to scandalize people unnecessarily.Josias bought a simpler T-shirt and shorts to stay at home (or in the bedroom) so he wouldn't have to wear sweatpants; this was “promoted” to the status of “just to work”. The black shirt and jeans donated by Uélton's mother will be use
Josias gets into Teodoro's building smiling. The landlord is at the counter listening to news of the afternoon, but when he sees the happy boy he decides to ask, “Is this happiness because of shopping?”“No.” Josias places the bags on the counter. While Teodoro checks out the purchases, he replies, “Happiness for getting it right with Melissa.”“I said she chose you. Stop worrying.” Teodoro takes the underwear package out of one of the plastic bags, “Ah, now yes!”Josias chuckles shaking his head, “Yeah; and now I'm going to have to wash them constantly so they don't get dirty.”“I will teach you how to use one of the washing machines.” Teodoro puts the package in the bag and gives it back to Josias.“Do you believe that I almost met Everaldo again?” Josias changes the subject, “Apparently he is a human being; he missed the bus like anybody else.&r
At night, Teodoro is listening to the news on the radio when Melissa hesitantly enters, looking everywhere. Teodoro sees the girl and makes a friendly gesture for her to enter.“Can I help you with something, young lady?”“Good evening!” She approaches the counter, “Is here where a boy named Josias lives?”Teodoro raises an eyebrow. Girl looking for Josias? It can only be the one he has been talking about and observing.“There's a nice guy named Josias who is working on a construction site as a bricklayer assistant. Is he really?”“It's him,” Melissa smiles, “Is he in?”“Of course he is.” Teodoro replies with a wry smile, “He doesn't have much to do outside of work. I just don't know if it would be prudent to invite you up.”Melissa immediately has red cheeks; she stares at the floor. “I didn't want to meet him in this connotation, si
Melissa stays for a few seconds trying to remember who Fabrício was. He is probably one of the boys from Saint Gabriel, introduced by Pamela. The mere memory of him filled Melissa with contempt; she purses her lips and shakes her head.“Ah, I'll call him tomorrow, now I want to go to my room and read something.”“The phone is noted in the notebook. Good night, daughter.”Melissa's father kisses her father goodnight on the forehead, pleased to see that she is not one of those desperate for boys. The next day, Josias wakes up and stretches, still sleeping naked. As an excuse, Josias now thinks that the underwear he bought is too new to be used “for nothing” and it was too hot at night. But, now he decides to wear one to go down and work.Upon entering the bathroom with the same sweatpants and shirtless, Josias is faced with Jeremiah bathing. The door was closed. When Josias closes it again, he is faced with
Josias furiously enters his room, annoyed by Jeremiah's provocations. Is it really serious that the comrade will be eternally wretched because of that discussion? After taking a deep breath and reflecting for a while, Josias decides not to take Jeremiah's mockery seriously, for the matter does not extend.“Life goes on and we argue about something that has already been resolved.”After the resolution, Josias takes the towel, shorts, and other clean underwear and goes down the stairs to take a shower. Upon entering the bathroom, he rejoices to see that there was no one and closes the door. The first water drops of the shower fall on Josias's skin like daggers. Even though the water is cold, Josias has a start. Today's sun did not do to his body any good. After the bath was over, the towel scratched his skin even more.Back in the room, with all his body on fire, Josias used this as another excuse to sleep naked. The less sheet touching his body
