Josias smiles faintly at the right corner of his mouth. Here he was, shirtless, just in sweatpants and slippers, with less than five bucks in his pocket, without papers. (He had just got them after insisting a lot on his late father).
His life, as he knew it, was over.
Here, in the Happiness Slum, a new Josias was about to be born. He would build his life using Everaldo's words.
However, there was an excerpt from Everaldo's sentence that deserved attention: "you will have the willpower". It wasn't just a matter of waiting for God's blessings to fall from Heaven.
Josias needed to have the willpower to make it happen, needed to move and use his hands. He needed courage and confidence.
Gathering himself with both feelings, he takes a deep breath and heads for the building.
Upon entering, Josias noticed that the owner of the building took care of the entrance. It looked similar to the lobby of a hotel or a high-class apartment building.
The rectangular space, painted in light blue, had a counter on one side. The rectangular space, painted in light blue, featured a counter on one side, where a man in his sixties with a mustache and a round belly was working.
On the opposite side, there was a mail rack for residents, divided into several compartments, each designated for a different room.
Two sofas, a clock nailed to the wall, plant vases, and a rug that said "Welcome" completed the decoration of the place. Josias smiles widely. The owner of the building tried to do a great job.
Josias approaches the counter. The man was listening to a football match on the radio. When he noticed Josias, he turned to the young man.
"Good evening, boy." The old man speaks in a friendly tone, "How can I help you?"
"Sir, I need a vacant room," Josias speaks without being afraid.
The owner of the building scans Josias from top to bottom before proceeding, not believing what he heard. "Really, boy? How do you expect me to let you stay here?"
Josias takes a deep breath. He expected that. However, Everaldo's words didn't leave his head. "You'll get out of this and you will be successful."
He needed to try.
"Sir, here's the matter: I just ran away from home because they murdered my father while I was in my bedroom." It was the first time Josias spoke about what happened to someone. "They wanted money from my father; they were bill collectors for a loan shark."
"I didn't hear of anyone murdered around here." The man replies with a frown. Josias could very well made up this story.
Josias, however, tries to explain, "No, it wasn't here. I ran away from Rainbow Garden. I just took a shower and had time to put on my underwear and sweatpants when I heard the invasion, the argument between them... and then the shots."
The landlord looked at him with suspicion.
If he was a resident of Happiness Slum, it would be understandable if Josias didn't go to the police, for the reason they killed his father. But, being a resident of Rainbow Garden... "Why didn't you go to the police? Why did you just come here, to a rougher neighborhood?"
Josias shrugs. "I'm not sure... I just wanted to hide, and I wasn't gonna hide in Europe Garden." Europe Garden is an upper-class neighborhood in Lagoon City.
The word "hide" is what makes the building owner uneasy. "Look here, boy, how am I supposed to know if it's not YOU who killed, or did something else wrong, and now you're trying to hide in my building? If the police show up, don't expect me to lie to protect you. I don't want any trouble, and the 'scoundrels' living here know that. They keep to themselves, and I don't meddle with them."
Upon hearing that the old man wasn't one to get into trouble, Josias felt even more inwardly that this was the perfect place for him to stay.
The loan shark collectors, if they go looking for him, won't show up in the building where he is.
Josias leans over to the counter. He dips his hands into the plastic surface, and speaks with urgency and a pleading tone, "I know it sounds strange, sir, but everything I told you is true. See, I didn't even have a minute to mourn my father's death. I don't even know if the neighbors heard the shot; if anyone has found him or if the police are there. I only had time to put this on and take only a few bucks I had seen on my dresser. I took the bus without knowing where to go."
"And stopped right there!" The man can't help laughing. However, he analyzes the story told by Josias. It was too elaborate, with too much detail, to be a made-up lie at the last minute.
"Let me see how much you have." The man crosses his arms and makes this request, already aware that Josias is not going to put five thousand dollars on the counter.

I hope the Campos Rocha family can forgive me someday.”João Paulo, holding his voice recorder, probed further, though without a tone of mockery or intimidation. “Did you understand what your ex-girlfriend really wanted at the beginning?”“No.” Brendon shook his head. “I got caught up in her panic and didn’t stop the car. It was only later, when she refused to go to the police station and tried to stop me from doing so myself, that I realized what she was truly after.”“Well, Mr. Souza, I hope everyone can indeed be understanding.” João Paulo ended the interview.B
Chapter 3356 The End of the Investment Whore
At Café Montanha, Luís approached the counter, stunned by what Jake and Rodrigo had just said.“What does that mean?” he demanded. “Is Suzy really leaving the city? For what reason?”“That wasn’t for you to shout to the whole world,” Jake replied sourly.“Maybe it’s better this way,” Rodrigo said playfully. “Now the people can set off fireworks.”Jake shrugged. “Well, Luís, since you’re VERY interested...”“Wait,” Luís interrupted, shaking his head. “I heard that last part. What did Suzy decide?”“I still don’t know,” Jake answered. “Knowing my stubborn sister, she might very well stay just to end up convicted and thrown in jail.”“Why the hell would she choose something like that?” Luís asked, bewildered.“I don’t know,” Jake said. “I think she feels she has a mission to defeat every person she hates.” Then, with ironic emphasis, he added, “Except you.”“There’s nothing between me and her,” Luís said quickly. “I’m getting to know someone else.”“Yes, Andressa Farina,” Rodrigo replied
Chapter 3355 Things Don’t Change
Caroline and Sofia sat at opposite ends of the sofa in Sofia and Alan’s suite as if the very cushions between them served as a buffer for old grievances.“Well, Sofia,” Caroline began carefully, “how are things? They gave me a general overview, but I want to hear it from you.”Sofia’s expression remained perfectly neutral. “With William and Daryl’s help, I managed to bring Vaztrans to profit for two consecutive years.”Caroline cleared her throat. “I heard Suzy Cogo was involved...”“And I knew how to expel that tramp with mastery the moment I realized she’d be a problem,” Sofia said sharply.“That’s good,” Caroline replied, trying to maintain composure. “Now it’s a matter of counting on continued success.”“Yes.” Sofia let out a slow sigh. “And what about you, Carol? Now that you’re planning to move back here, how is that going to work?”“How is what going to work...?” Caroline asked, already wary.“You and Reuben ran away to get married just so you wouldn’t have me at your wedding,”
Chapter 3354 Pack Your Bags Now
Alan and Caroline stepped into the suite he shared with Sofia. Sofia stood beside the crib, quietly watching little Carla sleep. She was still in her nightgown, but a matching jacket draped over her shoulders made her look a bit more composed. When she finally lifted her head, surprise tightened her features. She already knew Caroline had returned, but she had made no effort to see her until now.“Hi, darling... hello, Caroline,” she said cautiously.“It’s been a long time, Sofia,” Caroline replied, her voice neutral. She nodded toward the crib. “May I see her?”“Of course.” Sofia stepped aside. “Darling, I need to talk to you.”While Caroline admired the sleeping baby, Sofia led Alan to a quiet corner.“I heard your grandfather was transferred to the Rocha Mansion,” she said in a low voice.“That’s right.” His tone softened with melancholy. “Better he pass at home than in the cold sterility of a hospital.”“How sad,” she murmured. “But if there’s no other way...” Her eyes flicked tow
Chapter 3353 Facing the Family
Jake decided it was finally time to confront the unbearable situation brewing within the family. He found them gathered in the apartment: Eugenio tense to the point of snapping, and Suzy even worse.“Well,” Jake began, stepping into the living room, “I think it’s time we talk about the inevitable, don’t you?”Eugenio tried to play dumb. “What are you talking about, Jake?”“About who ran over Simeon Campos,” Jake said, his voice steady.Suzy let out a desperate breath. “Jake, it was an accident!”“Was it?” he countered. He sank into the sofa with calculated calm. “Strange... people are saying you did it on purpose.”“I wasn’t the one driving!” she blurted.“I wasn’t driving either,” Jake replied, “but I was the one who ended up in jail. Why didn’t you say this earlier, Suzy?”She trembled. “I... I was afraid they’d throw me in prison just for being who I am.”Eugenio frowned deeply. “What are you talking about?”“Oh, come on!” Suzy snapped. “Do you really think these people are interes
Chapter 3352 Time to Make Amends?
Mary brightened the moment Kelvin appeared. “Dad! Come here.”He laughed. “Sweetheart, this is your mother’s house. I’m just a visitor.”Melissa’s smile widened as she rose from her chair. “Kelvin, you’ll always be more than a visitor.”Mary hugged him with the same enthusiasm she’d had as a little girl, and Kelvin held her tightly, thinking she would always be his princess.“How’s your relationship with that young man... Andrew?” he asked cautiously.“He’s been treating me with respect, Dad! No late-night adventures in the bushes by the beach,” she declared, horrified at the very idea.Kelvin felt his stomach twist into a knot at the thought of his little girl behaving in such an indecent way. Melissa stifled a laugh.“Well... good. I’m glad to hear that,” he managed. “Can I talk to your mother for a bit?”“Of course! And afterward, go visit Grandpa Simeon. He’s not awake, but the nurse said it might help.”She waved goodbye and slipped out, closing the door behind her.Kelvin sighed
