Elisa gets annoyed when Melissa again asks about Marcelo and Stacy. The question is not whether this is true or false; is that Elisa doesn't even admit the hypothesis.
"You ask with past tense verbs as if that's a fait accompli!" Elisa complains through gritted teeth.
"I need to understand what happened to my brother." Melissa insists, "I can't imagine another 'Marcelo' other than your brother."
Elisa shakes her head wildly, "No, it can't be my brother! Did you guys try asking Stacy?"
Melissa rolls her eyes, "Of course not! She will never confess. Or she would be able to lie that it was Marcelo just to blame someone else."
"My brothers are tired of asking Marcelo and he always denies it." Elisa snorts in spite, "This issue has lasted since 1986, they can't be able to hide it until now."
"OK, Elisa, I won't bother you with this anymore." Melissa's tone doesn't make it clear that she's going to keep her promise, "I'm really worried about Will.
Even though Elisa slapped Pamela, she's the one who wants to normalize things, "Now let's all control ourselves so we're not going anywhere! Pamela, stop being mad because you're pregnant!"Pamela massages the slapped cheek. Her look is still angry, "OK! Let's avoid any more scandals. The bottom line is that I came to complain about my son being neglected. When I agreed to share custody of Caio, William was supposed to do his part." She turns to Melissa, "If your brother doesn't want to take care of his son anymore, just let me know! Caio is calling my dad 'Uncle Ray'."Melissa is embarrassed by the information. She can't defend that, "Pamela, I ask for patience to talk to Will. He's still shaken by the breakup of his engagement and the giving up of his soccer career. His life is all in disarray."Pamela shakes her head and counters, "That's no excuse! He has the right to freak out if he was single and alone; but, he has a son! Caio is not to blame for any of th
Josias doesn't dare to plead for William, since Beto is bursting with anger, and with good reason."Roberto, I understand you're angry." Josias tries to calm him down, "But I believe that leaving William out will be another blow for him.""And what will he do?" Beto counters with insensitivity, "Is he going to keep drinking until he gets cirrhosis? Is he going to keep fornicating indiscriminately until he gets SIDA or gonorrhea? And where is Caio in this story?""I just know that no one will be able to explain to Caio why he's going to stop living with his father again." Josias points to the important question.Beto, however, just shrugs, "At least this time he's moving in with his real mother.""Roberto, you already have another child on the way." Josias tries to change Beto's mind anyway, appealing to any objection, "I don't think your apartment can fit three kids."But, Beto has an answer for everything, "Don't worry. My mother-in-law sai
Simeon enters his house with shopping bags from the local market. The living room is set with the song "I've Been in Love Before" by Cutting Crew. Dora is standing in a meditative pose beside the phone. Simeon understands that she has just made a phone call."Bad news over the phone, dear?""A mystery for Sherlock Holmes to solve." Dora comments not looking at her husband, looking at nothing, "I called Stacy's parents' house and Mrs. Moreira told me that Stacy is no longer living in their house."Simeon frowns and leaves the bags on the couch, "What did she mean? Did they fight and kick their daughter out of the house?""No, she wanted to leave voluntarily." Dora responds, "But, she didn't say the address. She just said it's Downtown.""Oh dear, if she's with another guy, chances are her parents won't ever know," Simeon suggests.Hidden in the hallway, Carlos overhears the conversation and thinks about what he already knows.***<
The next day, Melissa decides to pay a visit to her parents. The Campos family is gathered in the living room, with the radio playing "Shattered Dreams" by Johnny Hates Jazz.Dora approaches with a tray containing cups of coffee, "Daughter, what an ugly thing, what a bad example for your son. You are now a respectable lady, you are past the age of fighting like a teenager."Carlos has Alan on his right leg and is swaying as if Alan is riding, "Hold on, cowboy!"Alan is amused, he believes he is on a horse. Simeon smiles with the great-grandfather and great-grandson having fun and chooses a cup to drink.Melissa takes a deep breath, still not getting over what happened yesterday, "I can hardly believe it. The world is turning against William. His dreams are shattered on the floor, according to the music that's playing."Everyone is surprised by Melissa's knowledge of the English language."That's my daughter, smart and cultured." Simeon prais
Josias is inside an apartment Downtown, watching Bruno talk to a newlywed couple to sell the place. The couple is dazzled and listening carefully to all the arguments of the real estate agent."You won't find another place better than this." Bruno continued with the sales pitch, "Close to the Main Square, right behind it is Avenida Getúlio Vargas with countless stores, you can go on foot to shop at the Ramos supermarket, and if you want an exquisite dinner, you will have the Crystal Blue restaurant ten minutes from here.""Wow, this building is really in a prime location." The husband confirms. He is in a suit and is good-looking, indicating that he is someone of many means. Maybe some banker's son.The wife, very sweet and shy, whispers in her husband's ear, "Is that Josias Rocha over there?"The husband smiles at Bruno, "My wife wants to know if we are in the presence of the most illustrious Josias Rocha."Josias is shyer than the lady pre
After careful consideration, Moacyr decides on the matter of custody of Caio, "Cristina, you know that I support Josias in every way. But if you need a friendly shoulder to let off steam..."Cristina turns off the sink faucet and turns to him, somewhat surprised, "No, Moacyr! Don't think about it. I'm not going to put that burden on you. You just told me you admire Josias like a son, so I'll save you the details."Moacyr cannot help but feel relieved.Cristina starts washing the dishes and continues, "After all, this is a more personal matter, and you might not feel comfortable measuring yourself on it. So let's talk about other matters."Moacyr nods smiling as he throws some leftover food into the trash.***At Silva Constructions, Carmen is sitting at her desk, smirking at another letter to Tiago.Tiago, sweating and fearful, takes the letter, takes it out of the envelope, and reads it, "Dear Losers of this shitty company: my uncle
A few days passed. At Simeon's house, Dora is serving breakfast. Her walkman is without the headphones, playing the song "The Only Way Is Up" by Yazz & The Plastic Population.Carlos appears walking slower than usual. When Dora sets the thermos on the table, she notices her father-in-law crestfallen."Dear father-in-law, you don't look very well to me."Dora has to drag the chair for Carlos to sit down because he couldn't."Don't worry, dear daughter-in-law. The old one here is out of date.""Don't joke about a subject like that." Dora kisses Carlos on the forehead, "Simeon will never be ready for this.""He has to." Carlos philosophizes, "This is how the cycle of life works. I need to make room for Alan and Caio, they will be the future of the nation.""OK, but Planet Earth still has room for you." Dora jokes, "After breakfast, we're going to the little medical clinic—""Who goes to the medical station?" Simeon appea
Uélton is desperate when Isabel asks him to take his father to the hospital. He screams, "Mother, what a horror! How long were you going to hide from me that my father has cancer?"On the other side, Isabel just needs to pass out from fright. What? "Hey, son, I didn't say—""Oh, of course, you didn't say!" Uélton chides her, "You think that because I have a wife and child I need to stay out of family problems! But, I'll tell you something, Mom: we're all one big family, we have to support each other! ""You still haven't married—" Isabel interrupts herself, she knows better than anyone that it's no use correcting Uélton anymore about Flavia being his 'wife', "OK, son, I'm glad you think about the family union.""And I'm not right? I'm not the dumb guy you guys think I am."Isabel is quick to correct, "Come on, son, we never thought you were dumb. Maybe a little crazy, with a loose screw." She completes with laughter
Josias visits the Rocha Hotel since he didn’t have a day off for the staff. In the management room, Eugenio gathered David, Benjamin, and Sybil. “Why is that mere cook present at this meeting?” David asked disparagingly. “Because that’s how our boss ordered it,” Eugenio replied dryly. “I didn’t say anything and didn’t call this meeting, so if you’ll excuse me...” Benjamin and Sybil were horrified to see David leaving the meeting just like that. However, when he opened the door, David came face to face with his father. “David, where do you think you’re going?” “DAD!” David exclaimed, extremely surprised. “I didn’t know you were coming!” “Didn’t Eugenio tell you I was coming?” Josias asked with a scowl. David understood who the ‘boss’ was. Benjamin and Sybil felt vindicated. Josias sat down at the desk, taking Eugenio’s seat, while the manager remained humbly standing. “Very well,” Josias began the meeting in a formal tone, “I’m here just to make things crystal clear. First
Melissa and Mary visit the Mountain Café.“A guava juice for me, Mr. Mountain!” Mary requested, smiling sweetly.“Of course, my princess!” Rodrigo replied, thinking Mary was very adorable. “Neil will make a delicious cup for you.”“Thank you. But the princess is Carol,” Mary responded, striking a serious pose.Melissa and Rodrigo laughed heartily. Mary is something else...“Rod, how has it been managing the café in your father’s absence?” Melissa asked seriously.Rodrigo served a baked chicken pastry with ketchup to Mary. “I'm getting by, Melissa. Josias was here earlier, more concerned about my loss than his own, as always. Isn’t he supposed to be resting?”Melissa nodded. “My husband is like that: he only relaxes when all of us are relaxed.”“An impossible mission because of certain people.”Neilton approached with the glass. “Who ordered a guava juice?”“I DID!” Mary grabbed the glass and went to a table.Melissa leaned forward, “Neil, Rod, how are Daryl and Diane? Behaving?”“Cont
At João Paulo’s house, he and Josias were about to have a significant conversation.“Walter, do you want to go with your mom to the kitchen?” João Paulo asked, looking at Helen. “I think she made some walnut cake.”“It was carrot cake,” Sandra replied, already getting up from the couch.“You got it.” Helen appeared and picked up Walter in her arms. “Let’s let Dad and Uncle Josias talk.”“Bye, Uncle!” Walter waved goodbye to Josias.“Bye-bye, I want a piece later!” Josias chuckled.Once alone with João Paulo, Josias became serious. “Don’t let anything or anyone ruin this family scenario, little brother.”“I’m fine. No one wants to ruin anything,” João Paulo replied casually.“Well, I hope David hasn’t caused you any trouble.”“He probably doesn’t even know I exist, man.” João Paulo shrugged.“But I stopped by Café Montanha and found out that the Vasquez family has replaced the Mountain family as the ‘annoying people.’”João Paulo sighed in disappointment. “Yeah. They—”The doorbell ran
Josias visits Café Montanha for a coffee and finds Rodrigo there. “Rod, how have you been?” Rodrigo is taken aback. “How am I? You’re the one who suffered a horrific loss recently!” “But you also lost your father. We’re in the same situation,” Josias explained as he sat down on a stool. “I’m okay, Josias. Life has a way of cheering me up. For example, I’m back at the diner after Thierry decided to take his place at the supermarket.” Rodrigo smiled. “What about the photography studio?” Josias smiled back. “It’s still going to operate, and Thierry will make periodic visits. But he’s going to appoint one of the staff to manage the studio.” Rodrigo served a pizza pastry to Josias. “Thank you. Well, I hope everything is alright between you two. I need to visit Rosemary and meet Jean Luc — is that the name of the baby?” “Yes, the name of the supermarket heir. Meanwhile, Frank will be here or somewhere else.” Josias interjected, “If Frank wants to work at Rocha Constructions, count
At the Rocha Mansion, Josias receives a visit from Benjamin. “How have you been, Ben? Any news about your parents?” The two embrace. “Actually, that’s what I want to talk about.” Benjamin scratches the back of his neck. The embrace breaks. “Let’s go to my office.” The two gentlemen enter Josias’s imposing office. “Any problems with Adolfo?” Josias asks, becoming serious. “Not yet, but I hope not to have any,” Benjamin replies with some sadness. “You know, Josias, what happened with your father made me think about my family, about how important it is for all of us to be together in the final moments.” “That’s true. João Paulo can tell you that better than I can.” “I think you can say it too. Vernon was the father you never had.” Benjamin clears his throat. “So, I’ve been looking into some hotels and realized there’s a demand at the Rocha Hotel in Victoria.” Josias looks at Benjamin, understanding where he’s going with this. “You want to go to Victoria to be close to your pare
Someone rings the doorbell at João Paulo’s house. The homeowner goes to answer after taking a shower and putting on clean clothes. But when he opened the door, João Paulo felt like slamming it in the visitor’s face. “Don’t be rude!” Erasmo exclaimed. “What do you want, you old bore?” João Paulo shot back. Erasmo barged into João Paulo’s foyer. “The mourning is over. Let’s pick up where we left off.” “Are you crazy? Who decides how long mourning lasts? We just got back from the trip!” “Not exactly, it’s been a day. Life goes on, my friend!” Erasmo replied mockingly. João Paulo remained serious. “But I don’t want to continue living this way, where fights and intrigues are the order of the day. Mr. Vasquez, you have a business to run, and I have a family to raise.” “But you found time to slap my son-in-law when he was here defending his family, didn’t you?” “Alan was extremely rude, but that was some time ago.” João Paulo frowned. “I don’t feel the same anger as before.” “So a
At the Vasquez Mansion, Alan could hardly believe that the people were thinking about more intrigues and disputes. “Guys, don’t you understand that I even forgot the reason I slapped Uncle João Paulo?” “Ridiculous!” Erasmo gestured. “You just maintained respect because it was a difficult occasion. But now, the mourning is OVER!” “Do you think João Paulo will rest, dear?” Sofia asked, sitting next to him. Alan shook his head. “If Uncle João Paulo doesn’t want to rest, then he is truly despicable. But my dad is back in town. He wouldn’t dare to do that.” The news should have been uplifting, but the members of the Vasquez family merely exchanged silent glances. With Josias present, it’s quite likely that he will put a stop to their fighting. Alan turned to Olivia. “In the meantime, we should celebrate the recovery of my dear mother-in-law!” Olivia and Sofia smiled awkwardly because of the secret they were keeping. “That’s right, let’s celebrate life!” Erasmo wrapped his arm arou
Josias Rocha and his family returned to Lagoon City. Those who were waiting for them stayed in the mansion and greeted them cheerfully in the foyer. “WELCOME BACK!” Melissa, crying, embraced her parents, William, and the twins fervently. Josias greeted them with a light smile. “Where’s João Paulo?” William asked. “He went straight to his house. His kids needed to rest from the trip.” Melissa wiped her tears with her fingers. “Alan went straight to his mansion. Especially now that his mother-in-law has woken up from the coma.” “That was a scare; I thought we’d have two funerals,” Simeon commented. Everyone headed to the living room. “Is Paris very beautiful, Mom?” Mary asked. “Yes, sweetheart, it’s stunning. We’ll go shopping together another time, okay?” “Do you have pictures?” Ignacio asked anxiously. “Yes, son, we took some pictures.” Melissa sat on the couch, pulling out a package from her bag. Josias sat in the armchair, taking a deep breath. William approached him.
At Café Montanha, Daryl walks in for a coffee and finds Rodrigo at the counter while Neilton serves the others. “Hey, are we back to the old tradition?” “Don’t be a clown, man.” Rodrigo laughs. “Yes, Thierry is at the supermarket, as we agreed.” “Hi, Neil. Can you make me a cappuccino while I enjoy a natural sandwich?” Daryl places his order. “Sure thing, Mr. Mountain.” Neilton heads to the back. Daryl sits on the stool. “So, how do you feel after getting back to your element?” “I don’t regret at all helping my dear wife at the supermarket, Daryl,” Rodrigo admitted while preparing the natural sandwich. “I’m not talking about regrets.” Daryl joked. “But it’s undeniable that after Uncle Francisco’s passing, you prefer to stay here, carrying on the legacy he left.” “Just like Crystal Blue.” Rodrigo smiled. “Hey, I’m aware that you’re looking to open another restaurant in Sunset Village. Do you think you can manage it? How’s the prospecting going?” Daryl picks up the sandwich but
