Ch-4: Scavenger Returns

"Daddy, this is Anna. I have taken mom's phone, and I really want to meet you! Please come to see us, our new address is C-205, River Valley Apartments."

This message from Anna wasn't just a way to let Jack know about their new address, but it was a way to sustain their connection… and her way to show her trust in him.

He felt a flood of emotions on reading this message, and he barely held his emotions in check before proceeding to the next messages.

Anna had made regular entries in his inbox, almost as if she used to sneak out with her mother's phone before bed and write out a summary of her day.

"We miss you, daddy…"

"Daddy, when will you come to meet us? Mommy says that we won't see you for a year at least, is that true?"

"Today, I had waffles for lunch, daddy! I wish you had come to pick us up from school."

Jack was scrolling through these entries, feeling a warm feeling of affection spread through his entire chest. But this is when his gaze fell on the latest message from Anna:

"Daddy, mummy said she will be taking us to a new school this morning. After Dottie and I sat in the car, she took us to the Godham Public School. I don't like it daddy, all my friends are at my old school… please come back, I don't like this."

Jack was shocked to read this message… it had only been seven days, and Rebecca was already neglecting their daughters?

She had pulled them out of their private school, and admitted them into a public school?

Or maybe, this was her way of torturing Jack, because he couldn't possibly believe that this decision was taken due to financial reasons.

First of all, it had only been seven days since he had gone to prison, and he knew he had enough money in his account to at least sustain his family for a month.

Moreover, if it was true that Rebecca was in a relationship with Robert Wendell, his former boss… then there was no way she needed to spend a penny of her own!

The man who had bought the entire jury on the day of his trial would certainly be showering his girlfriend with tons of money.

So the answer was simple: his daughters were most probably being neglected in their new home, at the hands of their mother and her douchebag boyfriend.

In that moment, one thing became very clear in his mind: he didn't care about what they were up to, but he couldn't let his daughters suffer at the hands of these monsters. He had to get their custody, at any cost.

No matter how much he hated Robert and Rebecca, he wouldn't let his children suffer because of them. Not only this, but their education was his first priority, and he wanted to send his children to the best school, rather than any public school that their mother had dumped them in.

He snapped out of his thoughts when the nurse entered the ward, and confronted him with a no- nonsense professional attitude.

"If we are not mistaken, you are the patient's relative?"

"Yes, I am her son, but—"

"We need to address the payment options for your mother's medical expenses. We checked her records, and her insurance has long since run out. How do you plan to handle the bills?"

Jack felt a knot in his stomach at the sudden reminder of their financial burden. Her question had reminded him of the harsh reality: if he didn't even have enough money to pay his mother's hospital bills, then how would he possibly fight for custody?

Swallowing hard, he managed to dismiss these thoughts as he requested,

"Please, can we have some time to sort this out? My mother may have some cash at home, and I'll go back quickly and look for it."

The nurse, though feeling a little sympathetic, maintained a firm stance;

"I understand, but we need an answer soon. As per the hospital policy, we can't continue the treatment unless the pending amount is cleared, understand?"

With this final warning, she left the room, leaving Jack with the weight of impending decisions.

After reassuring his mother that he would be fine, he left the hospital, only to find that it was raining heavily.

Maybe, even the sky was mirroring the storm of emotions that were battling inside his heart.

But even though he was exhausted and thoroughly soaked, he still plodded on. Hoping that he would find some money stashed in his mother's house, because he didn't have anything to his name, and his account had also been emptied out by Rebecca.

He searched everywhere in the house and looked carefully in every corner– inside every drawer and cupboard, desperately searching for any trace of money.

But he couldn't find anything at all… it looked like the gangsters had taken all of her money as well.

The realization came with a sense of helplessness, that his mother's health was at stake, and he couldn't do a single thing…

At the bottom of this pit of desperation, he saw a flicker of hope.

At first, the idea seemed ridiculous… it felt a little strange to turn back to that dark and violent world, after he had abandoned it for the sake of his family.

But now… years later, it was the thought of his mother and daughters, his only remaining family, that compelled him again.

What option did he have, other than to become a killer again?

The lines between right and wrong blurred as the desperation to save his mother overwhelmed him, and he ran down to the basement to find his old laptop.

He opened the second drawer of the old dusty cabinet, which contained a few books whose pages had become yellow and mildewed out of neglect.

With one smooth motion, he pulled out the back panel of this drawer; which opened after some resistance, revealing a hidden compartment. Inside this compartment, Jack found the silver laptop with a falcon logo on top; after all, this forgotten device was the key to a world he had desperately tried to stay away from.

The screen slowly flickered to life, and his fingers started to dance on the keyboard on the basis of his muscle memory. And by the time he blinked, the cursor was hovering over the "Login" button.

As soon as Jack logged into the website, a ripple of consequences was felt across the globe.

The security departments of various countries, each equipped with sophisticated monitoring systems, received a single alert.

The content of the message was very simple:

"The Scavenger is back."

These words, seemingly harmless to an outsider, sent waves of shock through the dark web. The Scavenger Organization, once feared for its ruthless efficiency, had come out of hiding at last.

In this emergency, the security departments had no choice but to put an urgent stop to their plans to attack the Scavenger Organization.

Meanwhile, the man in black also received a notification on his system, which read:

"The Prodigal Son returns."

The look of excitement and happiness on his face was evident, as the leader of their organization had finally claimed his rightful place.

Seconds after Jack's ID became active again, the laptop began to vibrate due to a sudden rush of pings.

One after another, Jack's inbox was flooded with various messages from different people, for different reasons. Be it the top businessmen of the world, who wanted to put some pressure on their competitors, or state dignitaries and politicians who wanted someone to disappear without a trace…

However, Jack simply scrolled through all these requests, without paying much attention to any particular one. When nothing caught his eye, he decided to delete them all with a single click.

He let out a bored sigh, before he decided to search for the nearest target instead. And surprisingly enough, he found another, very familiar name: Robert Wendell, his scumbag ex-boss.
