CHAPTER 8

Mabel could not believe her eyes.

Standing before her in the head office of one of the biggest establishments in the world was her own ex husband, Chris Bolton, the very man she had shamed for the past 3 years because he was broke.

How the hell he had managed to afford such an expensive suit, and what he was doing in there, Mabel had no idea. All she knew was that he was there, and he definitely looked better off than she had ever seen him.

"Where's Arthur?" Mabel asked, as she eyed Chris. "And what are you doing in here?"

Her voice remained cold but Chris could tell that she was still very much surprised.

"Arthur is regrettably not available at the moment and so you would have to answer to me," Chris replied with a smile. "Please have your seat."

"Report to you?" Mabel snarled, completely losing her cool. "Tell me, Chris. Who exactly do you think you are?"

I heaved a deep sigh and slowly walked over to the executive chair in the room. I sat down and faced Mabel who was still surprised at my attitude.

"I understand you're a little surprised," I started. "But with time, you'll get used to seeing me around here. Now, how exactly may I help you?"

Mabel's face twisted in horror and she spun around, walking out of the office. A few seconds later, Chris heard her voice as she conversed with a security guard in the distance.

"Is there no law and order around here anymore?" Mabel ranted. "How could you guys allow a mere cleaner into the office of the CEO of this big company just because he stole some fancy clothes and got a new haircut? Does that make sense to you?"

"I'm really sorry, ma'am," Chris heard the guard mutter. "Please lead me there so I would kick him out."

A few seconds later, the guard burst into Chris' office with Mabel standing behind him. There was a sinister smile on her face when she spoke.

"I'm sure you know your games are over now," She grunted. "Now you'd know better than to mess with someone with as much influence as I have."

Mabel spun around gingerly and her eyes met with the guard's.

"Now, arrest this man and lock him up in a lonely cell until he learns his lesson."

The guard swallowed hard as he stared at Chris. Word had quickly spread amongst all the staff of NEXUS CORPORATIONS, about how the real heir to the business empire had miraculously reappeared. Chris' picture had been sent to all the staff, so that they could know him as the new head of the company. Certainly, there was nothing the guard could do about his presence.

"What are you waiting for?" Mabel barked at the guard. "I said arrest this man here! He's an imposter, trying to claim the position of the head of NEXUS!"

"Uhmm, ma'am," the guard stammered. "I can't - "

A quick finger over Chris' lips was enough to shut the guard up.

"You can have your leave now," Chris said.

The guard turned on his heels and bolted out of the office before Chris could change his mind and Mabel watched in awe.

What was actually going on?

"Are you ready to talk to me now?" Chris smiled.

"Hell no!" Mabel cried. "Don't think you can have me fooled with that performance! I would call Arthur now, and I would make sure you get the disgrace of your lifetime today."

Chris nodded at her words and before she could walk out on him again, he stopped her.

"How about we make a bet here?" Chris smiled.

"A bet?" Mabel chuckled. "The same thing that made you a wretched pauper? Old habits never die, do they?"

"Not really," Chris smiled. "If you can get me out of this office in ten minutes, I would give you half a million dollars. If you can't, you would give me half of whatever is left in your bank account."

Mabel stared at Chris for a long time and finally she burst out into a prolonged laughter.

"First of all, you don't have up to a hundred dollars in your account," She said. "You don't even have a net worth more than fifty dollars. I know you cannot give me a hundred, not to talk of half a million!"

Chris shook his head pitifully. "I knew you would chicken out."

"Deal," Mabel growled. "Just for the satisfaction of seeing you rot in a cell!"

And with that, she stormed out of the office.

"Arthur!" Mabel called. "Security! Anyone!"

Chris knew that Mabel was going to make a scene, and that was exactly what he wanted. He wanted her to drag as much attention as she could to herself, and then, he could give her the first part of the public disgrace he had planned for her.

Chris chuckled to himself as he saw the wheels of his revenge plan in motion.
