It was exactly a week since the training regime started. Alex evaluated the situation and decided the time had come for another safety measures.
“Folks, you surprised even me with your stunning growth! At this rate, you won’t need anyone’s protection anymore!” acknowledged Alex. “I guess you lot are ready for the next in our plan!”
“Before, apart from meals and occasional rests, your days were filled with nothing but scheduled training. From now on, everyone will train only for half a day!” declared Alex, followed by the hoorays of the people who thought their exhausting days were behind them.
“Another half of the day will be utilized to reinforce the village and surrounding. I’m talking about making defensive ditches around, pitfalls, and other defense mechanisms!” continued Alex, quickly extinguished the villagers’ joys. The hoorays turned to boos real fast.
“Now, now, don’t be like that! This will be useful in the long term, consider this as your future investment,” said Alex, attempting to persuade the crowds. “Once made, you can kick back a little while until they need to be replaced or repaired. It’s kind of passive income, uh I mean passive defense! You lot get protected just by doing nothing!”
The villagers whispered at each other, growing suspicious of Alex’s true motive.
“You remind me of those cunning merchants from the South,” commented Stella. “I bet these guys don’t even have a clue of what are you talking about.”
“And that’s where you come in handy!” reacted Alex, as if expecting that opinion from the Archer. “You will instruct and supervise them in strengthening these villages by making use of booby traps. Of course, everyone will join. But you, Stella, will be the leading heroine for this task!”
Flattered, Stella turned her face away while attempting to hide her delight to be entrusted by the Hero whom she secretly had a crush on. Her flushed red face gave away her feelings, though.
“Ironic, a boobless chick is going to show people how to make booby trap,” chuckled Alex to himself, unaware that elves’ ears were highly sensitive.
“I can hear you, you pervert!” screeched Stella. “So, you gave me that task just to make fun of my developing body?”
“Err, you must have misheard me. It just happened to me that elves are known for residing in the forest, right? So, I bet you will be familiar using the vines and others from Mother Nature as defensive measures,” evaded Alex.
While that dynamic duo were in heated debate, back in the palace, King Romeus couldn’t help but to feel anxious. He’s wondering what took them so long, they were supposed to come back already after defending the village. Dreadful possibilities started to cloud on King Romeus’ mind.
While pacing back and forth in front of his throne, the king was alerted by the guards that a messenger had come, bringing back the news from the village.
“What? You’re telling me that stubborn hero is preparing the civilians to face the demon horde?” shouted the king after he heard the report from the messenger. “Who does he think he is, taking decisions by himself without my approval?”
Nelson, who just arrived, also managed to hear that unusual news. Somehow, a devious plan hatched in his mind.
“Your Majesty, your humble vassal reports in,” greeted Nelson. “May you enlighten me of what’s causing your fury to be unleashed within this room?”
“Nelson, you come at the right time!” expressed the king to see his Royal Advisor had shown up. The king then proceeded to tell Nelson of what’s happened. Although he already knew, still he showed how concerned he looked, trying to show the king that he also shared the same sentiment.
“Your Majesty, that is a serious offense, I must say,” told Nelson. “If you allow me to offer my opinion, I would suggest Your Majesty to dispatch my oldest son there. Dangerous as it is, but for the sake of this kingdom and your sovereignty, our family would gladly risk our lives.”
Touched by his advisor’s dedication, King Romeus agreed and sent Nelson’s son, Horat, to be on his way to the village with the mission of bringing Alex back to his senses.
Horat remembered his father’s instructions before his departure. As a pure blood of royalties, their family was always revered as the kingdom’s guardians for generations, either by brute force or cunning wits. That was why they couldn’t accept the fact that now Nousant Kingdom must depend its fate on some random outsiders.
Upon his arrival, Horat found the village was bustling with lively atmosphere. But it looked more like a military camp preparing for war, instead of a peaceful village which he expected before. He scanned around, searching the culprit behind all of these commotions. It wasn’t difficult for him to locate Alex, who was busy instructing the people and making sure everything was in place.
As he saw Alex who was supervising the construction of the village’s defense mechanism, he thought to himself how naïve of the king to entrust the kingdom’s future on him.
“Greetings, Sir Hero. King Romeus has sent me, Horat, to take you back to the kingdom,” greeted Horat to the point, without wasting any time for trivial stuff.
“Yeah right, you can go back and tell the king to wait. Maybe one more week?” replied Alex without even batting an eye. “Hey, you lot over there! How could you make a tilted siege tower like that? Do you think leaning tower of Pisa will be useful at war? Fix it, start it over if you must!”
Being ignored ignited a little bit of rage within Horat, but he suppressed it. He continued to pester Alex.
“It must be nice to have your own little army to fight in your stead, huh? You can reduce the risk of you being hurt in the battle by using them as your meat shield,” provoked Horat. “And when they win, you can take all the credits. This world is surely just a plaything for you, right?”
Horat was not the only one repressed his anger. Alex was actually acting all calm while gritting his teeth to see the traitor again. But since Horat hadn’t done anything yet, Alex felt it was still unnecessary for him to take action.
Receiving no response from his target, Horat continued to follow Alex around while mocking him and commenting in cynical tone.
“You call this a pitfall? Sorry, I thought it was a hole meant for the bodies of your fallen soldiers. You plan to join them later, perhaps?”
“You must be out of your mind if you think this ditch will slow down the demons. They have wings, you know?”
“This net is for traps? I bet my late grandma can knit better than this!”
Amidst the flurry of insulting remarks from Horat, Alex tried his best not to take the bait. He didn’t want to start another matter at the moment. His focus currently is preparing the village for another skirmish anytime soon. Surely, he didn’t want to spend his energy on something so trivial like this.
Horat smiled despite Alex’s composed stance. He was sure that he already planted seeds of doubt and ire within Alex’s mind. For now, he would leave him be because he already had another thing to do. He prepared to come back to execute the devious plan he devised.
Even before the dawn broke, Horat already left the village. He couldn’t wait to defile Alex’s reputation in front of King Romeus. As soon as he arrived, Horat went to have audience with the king, who had been eager to hear Horat’s report.“Your Majesty, I regret to inform you that the Hero you put great faith on, has abused the authority you’ve granted,” said Horat, beginning his subjective report.“I witnessed the Hero was trying to rival you there, acting like a king. He tyrannically ordered the villagers to commit illegal logging, plundering and pillaging the resources which I am sure without your permission. He even had the gall to enlist the civilians into his wannabe army, forcing them under harsh training. Women and children were exploited as labourers to manufacture the weapon,” exposed Horat. “I suspect he was trying to usurp your throne.”“Outrageous! Aren’t the party members there? Why didn’t anybody stop him?” interrogated King Romeus.“They seemed like they’re under the H
“Cheers!” yelled the villagers as their wooden mugs clashed. Laughters were heard all around. The vibrant vibes were beautified by a full moon, too. Truly a night worth celebrating. Nobody would have thought that this cheerful village was once about to be ravaged by otherworldly beings before. It was quite a feast they’re having. For this special occasion, simple yet appetizing dishes were served, complemented by homemade beers and wines. Everybody was enjoying this festival which was held to celebrate their victory over the demon horde.“Sir Hero, we apologize for this plain hospitality,” said the village chief to Alex. “Though it may not be much, but we do hope that you at least found our sincerity through our offerings.”“Old man, are you kidding me? This is the best meal I’ve eaten in a while!” praised Alex after gulping an entire bowl of onion soup. “The last time I was about to eat lavishly like this, those damned demons had to come and interrupted my dinner!”Helene who sat bes
The citizens flooded the roads when the heroes returned from their mission. They already heard the triumph Alex and his peers achieved through the merchants and travellers coming from the village. That was why they were so enthusiastic to welcome the champions back to the capital. The hero squad and Tristan’s army waved at the crowds, enjoying their minute of fame. But that bright atmosphere suddenly turned gloomy when they arrived at the castle gate. The guards stationed there stopped them and treated them like fugitives.“The king has been waiting for you,” explained the guards abruptly. “Make haste!”“Chill down, Hero. Maybe the news about your exploits hasn’t reached his ears yet,” calmed Tristan down. “Go ahead and have the audience with Your Majesty. There is some paperwork I need to do first.”“No big deal, I’m not obsessed with fame anyway,” replied Alex while leading his party to the throne room. He is prepared to receive any kind of harsh words from King Romeus. As they ente
After a sleepless night, Salieri woke up with a mixed feeling. Alex’s words still occupied his mind. He got to admit that indeed his physique was not the best in the team, but as a Bard, he didn’t have to worry about that. Or so he thought.Opening the door of his room, Salieri headed towards the dining area. First thing first, his belly needed to be fed. When he arrived there, he found nobody else around.“A healthy mind comes from a nutritious foods,” mumbled Salieri as his hands reached a toast of bread and soft cheese, along with fresh grapes and apples. But before that, he decided to quench his thirst by gulping a glass of orange juice.“So light, is that all you’re having?” commented Alex who appeared out of nowhere, surprising Salieri in process. “Are you on a diet or something?”“Mamma mia! Before your prophecy of me dying in battle comes true, I suspect I will die first thanks to your sneaky behaviour, Senor!” protested Salieri after he finished coughing up the orange juice h
“Hi darling, I haven’t seen you all day long, where have you been?” greeted Pandora as soon as she saw Alex who just finished patrolling around.“Usual stuff, patrolling, supervising, you know, menial stuffs like that,” replied Alex, ignoring Pandora’s temptation. “Actually, I was looking for you as well,”“Oh my, and what do you want from me? Something physical?” teased Pandora, escalating her seductive approach. “The sun is still high on the sky, don’t you want it a little bit later, in the evening perhaps?”“No, quite the contrary. I want that physical stuff to be done here during the daylight. There’s still some space enough for you and me on the training ground. Salieri and Stella are already there too for the same reason,” explained Alex, still unaware of Pandora’s innuendo. “Come with me!”“Goodness, how pushy and daring of you! I never thought you were into that kinky stuff!” responded Pandora. “And you told me Salieri and Stella were doing that too there? What an unlikely com
"Miss Helene, we will be under your care for today!” greeted the up and coming young alchemists assembled in the Royal Alchemy Center. “Please treat us well!”“Please, no need to be so formal,” replied Helene warmly. “To tell you all the truth, I am also a novice in this part, so we’re standing on equal ground.”The alchemists looked at each other, confused to hear Helene’s remark. At this point, it had been a common knowledge that nobody rivaled the Holy Saintess in terms of potions crafting. To hear the Saintess herself proclaimed her inexperience in front of them was something unexpected for the apprentices.Whisperings kept getting louder, perhaps Helene also realized that. But before she could ask what was going on, one of the alchemists raised his hand, unable to hold back his question any longer.“Um, Miss Helene, are our ears deceiving us? Because we just heard you said you were a novice,” asked one of the alchemists, followed by noddings of his colleagues. “I mean, you are ou
Nobody would thought that just a while ago, that room was so cheerful. Very contrast with what was happening now. The alchemists who were enjoying what they saw as a free circus, held their breath and conquered by dismay. Alex who quickly grasped the situation, approached Horat who laid on the floor defenselessly. He crouched to check on further what was the current situation of the royal snob. “Wait, the world will be a better place if this scumbag is out of this world...” thought Alex’s evil side. “All you have to do is nothing, and voila, one less trouble to think about,” “No, you can’t do that,” protested Alex’s benevolent side. “Don't allow yourself stoop so low to let that slide.” “Pfft, remember what he did to you in your previous life?!” roared the malevolent thought in Alex’s mind. “Don’t you want this asshole reap what he sowed?” “But wait, in this life, Horat hasn’t done anything worthy of his death yet,” mumbled Alex to himself, finally gaining control back over his bo
That morning, Assembly Hall was packed with more people than usual. And it’s not just any ordinary-looking persons gathered there. Clearly there were individuals of status attending the event. Even representatives from neighboring countries didn’t want to miss any recent development regarding the hottest event in town. Yes, everybody came there for witnessing the progress of Alchemic Incident. That’s how the public called the latest uproar which starred Horat as the main cast. Although Alex didn’t feel he took any participating role, but nevertheless he was summoned there in front of the king, as a defendant.“Silence!” shouted Nelson to the audience. “We are about to begin the investigation, so nobody speaks unless allowed to!”“Yesterday, Horat was minding his own business, patrolling around the Royal Alchemy Center. His sense of justice brought him there, although it was not his job to do so. That’s when he decided to have a closer look at the potion-crafting activities, since ther
