"The guardians had already revealed so much within a short period that Alex struggled to take it all in at once.
He was still concerned as the amulet was giving off a red-coloured glow.
‘’Someone very close to your heart is in grave danger,’’ Yum Wey said.
‘’Concentrate. Listen.’’
‘’To summon your powers, you must always look within yourself.’’
Alex focused his energy for a few seconds. All he got were screams and noise. He paused for a few seconds to filter out all the noise. Then he heard it.
‘’Serena?’’ his eyebrows raised. ‘’Oh, my goodness, she must be in trouble.’’
‘’Go,’’ Cetzel declared, with a smile. ‘'We shall meet again soon.’’
Nodding, Alex closed his eyes briefly and imagined himself on the upper surface of the temple. His body became transparent for a few seconds, flashed, disappeared, and reappeared in its normal form. He repeated the process twice but met the same disappointing end.
‘’What am I doing wrong?’’ he asked in frustration. ‘’Why can’t I teleport?’’
‘’Young Master,’’ said Yum Balam softly. ‘’The power of teleportation can only work when your mind is freed from all burdens that weigh it down like a millstone.’’
‘’But... the other powers worked,’’ protested Alex.
‘’Yes indeed, young master. The abilities you have so far are those that work from within a short distance.’’
‘’To teleport, the mind has to be light, like the wind. Look within yourself once more. What do you see? What are your fears? Confront them. Only you can.’’
‘’How can I do that, lord guardian? I don’t do Yoga and stuff like that.’’
‘’Mind over body, young master. Mind over body,’’ Yum Balam replied gently.
‘’Mind over body,’’ Alex replied as he closed his eyes again, maintaining a meditative posture. He could see his fears, worries, and pains in his mind's eyes. He also saw spiders, tall buildings, failure, and other objects he could not explain.
‘’Focus. Use your imagination,’’ he heard a voice calling out from a distance.
Alex pictured himself on the surface. He could see the sunshine, El Castillo, and the surroundings. In an instant, he disappeared only to reappear right next to the pyramid, a few meters from where the excursion bus had been parked.
‘’Thank you, guardians,’’ he whispered to himself.
Nobody was in sight, but he could hear the sounds of police sirens approaching from a distance. Escorting the police cars was a van from the K9 unit.
‘’Dogs?’’ he said, lifting his eyebrows. ‘’They must have dispatched a search party for me.’’
‘’Serena! I need to reach her quickly.’’
With the speed of light, he bolted away and within seconds, arrived at the crash site. He saw, to his horror, that the excursion bus had already tipped over the edge of the cliff.
‘’My goodness, I’m late! I must catch them before they hit the rocks below.’’
Leaping from the cliff in a burst of speed, he realized, to his delight, that his body defied gravity. Within a second, he was on the ground, staring upwards at the bus in a free fall.
‘’I must stop it. But how?’’ he wondered. Immediately he remembered his lessons.
‘’Mind over body,’’ he muttered under his breath.
Focusing his concentration, he launched himself like a rocket in an upward thrust towards the plummeting vehicle. As his upward force collided with the downward momentum of the bus, its descent halted abruptly, hovering at some feet above the jagged rocks below.
Silence.
‘’What happened? Are we dead?’’ someone asked.
The driver, his hands still gripping the steering wheel, looked pale but relieved. "I-I don't know," he stammered. "It's like something... or someone... stopped us."
Straining against the enormous weight, Alex focused all his newfound power, channelling it into lifting the bus to safety, and back onto solid ground.
There was a brief silence as everyone was still in shock over what just happened.
‘’Is everyone okay?’’ Alice called out.
Everyone in the vehicle was too occupied, checking up on one another, totally ignoring her.
‘’Who’s that standing in front of the bus?’’ Ryan asked suddenly, pointing.
At that moment, Alex sensed that he was about to be spotted. He teleported immediately from the scene.
Detective Luis Gomez of the Policía Estatal de Yucatán (Yucatan Police Department) sat behind his mahogany desk staring at the young man in front of him.Gomez was in his late thirties. Having served in the Mexican Fuerzas Especiales (Special Forces), he received rigorous training in counter-terrorism, unconventional warfare, and direct action missions. His boss, the Chief of Police, had taken some weeks of sick leave, leaving him temporarily in charge of the police station. After listening attentively to the young man’s story, he still wasn’t very convinced.‘’You mean you just wandered into the jungle on your own without any idea about where you were going?’’‘’Yes, detective. I had always wanted to explore the dense tropical vegetation. But somehow I lost my sense of direction.’’‘’Hmm... Gomez nodded as he lighted a cigarette, his legs on the desk.’’‘’So how did you find your way back?’’‘’Well, I got lucky.’’‘’Lucky huh? Perhaps you’ll care to explain why your bag was found nea
‘’You were supposed to be dead,’’ Diego muttered, summoning some courage‘’How did he survive?’’ Ryan asked, surprised.‘’Maybe the hole wasn’t as deep as we thought.’’‘’Some guts you have coming in here all alone after all that happened, Alex,’’ Tyler sneered.‘’You think you’re some tough guy huh?’’‘’I bet he would yelp for help as usual. Maybe this time, that Serena girl will come to his rescue.’’All three burst into laughter.Alex looked unperturbed, not noticing their subtle threats.‘’Don’t you have nothing to say poor street rat?’’ Tyler teased.‘’Cat got your tongue, Indie?’’Alex cast a nonchalant gaze at the trio, then shifted attention to his wristwatch. ‘’You boys should find something better to do with your time. All the wealth you display belongs to your parents. Not you.’’‘’Just friendly advice,’’ he added, turning to leave.‘’What did you just say?’’ Tyler asked angrily.Silence‘’Hey, I’m talking to you, dummy.’’‘’Looks like good old Indie is high on some Mexica
A staff of La Cantina walked out of the door towards the black SUV, with three bags of packaged food in her hands. After the driver handed over some wads of cash to her, the vehicle drove towards the highway and sped off, with a blue Ford Minivan escorting it."I have to go, Serena," Alex said with a sense of urgency."I forgot something in the hotel, and it’s very important."‘’What did you forget Alex?’’ she asked, looking directly into his eyes.‘’Oh um, my mama. She asked me to deliver a package to one of her relatives, who lives not too far from the hotel.’’‘’I’m coming with you.’’‘’No, No. I’ll handle it dear. Enjoy your meal.’’"Is it about the bill? I’ll pay and - ""No, not at all. I got some pocket money from my trip sponsor. Please, I’ll meet you later. Promise.’’He dropped some dollar bills on the table, kissed her on the cheek, and hurried towards the exit door.On stepping outside, he looked ahead but the vehicles were no longer in sight. ‘’Dang!’’ he bit his lips in
‘’Who goes there?’’ a voice thundered from the darkness."It is I, Tsozil, Dark Master," came the reply. "My brother and I bring news."‘’Speak!’’‘’We followed the signal from the temple. We located the human.’’‘’Are you certain it was him?’’‘’Yes, Dark Lord Kimil. We observed and - ‘’‘’What of the Chakoom?’’‘’It was with the boy, Dark Master.’’‘’So, it is true.’’Kimil emerged from the shadows, completely clothed in dark armor, and bearing the face of a skeleton. As the Dark Lord Master, he was the most powerful of all the dark lords. Their dwelling place was Xiba, controlled by Ixtab, the god of death and ruler of the underworld. He paced back and forth as the spies delivered the information to him. Pausing for a while, he said: ‘’The human is protected by the Chakoom.’’‘’When shall we attack him Dark Master?’’"We wait for the opportune moment."‘’Yes Master.’’ Tsozil and his brother bowed,‘’You may leave,’’ Kamil dismissed both bat creatures with a wave.‘’My fellow lords
‘’So, what did she say?’’ Serena asked in excitement as she escorted Alex away from the campus administrative building.‘’Nothing much. Just the usual.’’‘’I don’t buy it. She must have said something.’’‘’She only warned me never to break the rules again.’’‘’Really? Just that?’’‘’Yeah.’’‘’Surprising. Usually, when Dr Harper invites you to her office, that means trouble.’’‘’Guess I got lucky,’’ Alex chuckled.‘’I agree with her though.’’‘’On what?’’‘’Everything. You shouldn't go around poking your nose everywhere’’‘’You think she’s right?”‘’Absolutely. You couldn’t have got lost if you had stuck with us.’’‘’Okay you win,’’ Alex said, raising his hands in surrender. They strolled across the lawn to the library, their bags strapped to their backs. Just a few days ago, they had flown back from Mexico, without three other students, who had to stay behind to receive medical treatment.‘’Have you seen Tyler and Ryan since our return?’’ she asked.‘’No. Why?’’‘’I hear they will be
‘’And now to my last question Mr. Rodriguez,’’ Jenny said, checking on her phone to see how long the interview had lasted.Alex sighed. This was the third time she was letting him know, that she would round up soon. Yet she kept on talking like a chatterbox.‘’What advice do you have for people who wish to embark on such visits to ancient sites?’’‘’Well, always ensure you allow locals or tour guides to lead the way,’’ he replied, making a time-up sign with his hands.Jenny nodded. ‘’We’ve come to the end of this interview. Thanks for your time.’’‘’See you at this evening’s exhibition at the museum,’’ Alex smiled as he waved her goodbye. He had barely walked for a minute when his mobile phone rang. The caller ID was blank, indicating that it was an unknown number. Hesitating a bit, he picked up the call.‘’Hello!”Silence.‘’Hello!!’’‘’We’re coming for you,’’ a male husky voice spoke from the other line.‘’Who is this?’’ a surprised Alex asked. The line immediately went dead.Walkin
‘’Who? Do I know you? Alex questioned, looking bewildered.‘’I have met with your mother Isabella,’’ Luz explained. ‘’She told me where I could find you.’’‘’My mama?’’‘’Yes. I’m a spiritual healer and sorcerer. Came from Mexico to warn you.’’‘’But it seems,’’ he said pointing at the lifeless heap of fossil, ‘’that they got to you first.’’Alex looked at him, still searching for answers. ‘’How did you know?’’Luz smiled, stretching out his palms to return the chakoom. ‘’I had a little chat with a spiritual friend of yours.’’Alex’s eyes widened in surprise.Looking around to be sure nobody was listening, Luz bent over to Alex and whispered: ‘’Cetzal appeared to me while I consulted the spirits. Gave me all the instructions.’’‘’The Dark Lord Kimil is amassing a large force for the final battle. As the chosen one, the guardians want you to be ready.’’‘’What you just witnessed this evening was Kimil testing the waters.’’''Time is running out, and we must prepare you immediately.''''
‘’Silence!’’ Kimil ordered, pacing up and down his enclave in anger.Tsozil was on his knees shivering in fright. ‘’Dark Lord Master, we followed him. But he – ‘’‘’You failed!’’ Kimil cut in. ‘’Your orders were to keep me updated on the son of Kulkantzi.’’‘’The sorcerer, he cast a spell – ‘’‘’What spell is more powerful than the power of darkness?’’ Kimil roared‘’My lord, he has some sort of magic that keeps him spiritually cloaked.’’‘’Grrrrr,’’ Kimil released a ball of fire at Tsozil, narrowly missing his head.‘’If it wasn’t for your incompetence, I would have snuffed the life out of that boy.’’‘’You almost had him, dark master,’’ a dark lord spoke.‘’Aye,’’ Kimil replied, pausing for a moment. ‘’I could feel his fear, his vulnerability.‘’When my shadow gripped him, I took a brief peek into his life’’‘’The sorcerer,’’ said another dark lord.‘’He has some knowledge on how to wield the powers of the chakoom,’’ Tsozil added, shielding his head with his hands, as if expecting a
