Broken Hope (1)

There was a time that I clung so desperately to hope. At the time, I was never that prone to be skeptical. But if you lived the way that I had, then we'll be able to see each other eye to eye. To others, hope is a blessing, a way to see the future in rose tinted lens. To me, its a toxin. A way to break my already shattered heart.

How did I, a 13-year-old boy, became like this you might ask? Quite nosy huh? Well, I will oblige to your wish.

10 years ago, I was the first born son of a prominent family, destined to live a life with a golden spoon, given the best education, wore the best tailor made clothes, and become a well-mannered and dignified member of society.

Well, give emphasis on the WAS. Because that was it: I was, the first born son. My only recollection from my parents were only two instances. The first, was their promise to come back for me when I was 3 years old.

I could still remember them, black trench coats, umbrellas, blond hair tucked away in large hats and bowler caps, eyes deep azure and sparkled under the street light.

"Da... mam? Where are we?" I asked.

"Oh, this will be your new school! Don't worry pet, you'll fit in just fine." Mam said with a smile.

"But why are we coming at the middle of the night Da?" I inquired innocently.

"Because it's prudent for us to be a wee bit earlier than the rest lad." Da said as he introduces me to the Principal. He was a thin man with gray hair and an even thinner monocle.

"Ahh yes, the new student! I was expecting him a few nights on but to think you would bring him here immediately."

"Yes, we are every excited to enroll him in early education." Ma said excitedly.

"So what's the lad's name?"

"??? Scifios." Da said, but... To tell you the truth. I don't remember my real name. Not much was the meaning of why I wanted to use that name since.

"I see, then we should help you settle in, welcome to Sheridan Academy boy."

That night was the last time I saw my parents. Mam smiled and waved at me, but da was reserved, maybe he was just shy.

Sheridan Academy, that was the name of my home for the next five years of my life, was a school situated just outside Lysensa. There, I studied the basics of Mathematics, Language, History, and even basic and common etiquette.

But what I enjoyed the most was the lessons about abilities. As a rule, those who become of age, from ages 5 to 9, can awaken their abilities. And at my 6th Birthday, it manifested. Telekinesis in a form of cyan mist. My teachers praised me for having that ability.

So I strove to be an excellent student, and at the most part, I did. Because I wanted my parents to acknowledge me. I wanted their love. But I kept telling myself they gave me this opportunity to let me study, so it's a given that I should take this seriously.

Five years... I stayed in that place for five years. Hoping. The Principal told me that I was enrolled as a resident, so I should stay. Running away is not an option, because one, the outside world is a dangerous place for an 8 year old.

"But can I file for a leave?" I asked.

"You can... But not this month, the last lass booked the last leave." The principal said. He was good at masking his facial expression, and the second reason why running away is a bad plan: the principal has the ability to create barriers, even a field mouse can never slip in or out under his sphere of influence.

"Then I want to book on the first day of the next month!" I said hastily.

"Mr. Scifios. May I remind you that you are representing our school's academics. Plus, your ability is still unstable." Principal Lewis said, adjusting his monocle.

It's true... When I first used my power, I shattered thirty windows and the fountain crumpled. They told me it was telekinesis, the ability to manipulate things using only my mind. I mean, sure I was happy I awakened my power, but it was dangerous because my anxiousness and eagerness to see my family was getting haywire.

"But I'm different now! I can control it." I said and demonstrated my control of my telekinetic abilities by rearranging his messy notes. "Please sir, just a wee bit. I just want to see my family."

The principal sighs and gives me a look full of forlorn.

"You... can go this Saturday. Just... Don't hope too much."

He gives me the address and the names of my parents.

Randolph and Ashe Scifios.

I've read about them, my family line. House Scifios is a long line of psionic healers, their ability to manipulate and close up wounds by means of using their telekinesis, they were regarded as miracle workers. My da and mam are the heads of the Biggest Hospital in Lysensa. Essentially, they were a powerful name.

I was excited, not only because I wanted to see my parents, but also to let them see how much I improved.

I went back to my room, a simple brown table for studying, a bed with clean teal sheets, and books the lined up neatly on my bedside. The smell of eucalyptus wafts in from the outside, calming down my excited cells. I lay down on my bed, staring at my ceiling. I can finally see my parents again.

All I could remember was, my mam, being all smiles and saying that she loves me. And my da, even though he was cold or doesn't seem to pay me any mind, I still think he cares. Blond hair and Blue eyes...

A little thing to note about me, I'm a bit different from my parents, I have coal black hair and scarlet eyes, not at all the same as my parents. But who cares, I'll see them again!

Days passed and Saturday came. I arranged all things that I want to show off for my parents.  My perfect grades, my conduct score, and my scholarships and contracts for advertisements.

'Ma and da will be so proud of me.' I thought to myself.

The van was waiting for me outside, it was bound for Lysensa, the land of immortality. Where cultures and memories live forever.

Who knew... that my visit there would be the cause of the day I will come to dread forevermore.
