“What happened?” I ask Louisa.
She looks at me, her body trembling.
“Louisa?”
She flinches. “Sorry, just remembering you like that sends chills down my spine.”
“Like that?”
“Your hair was pure white… and your eyes were crimson. The black aura surrounding you was intense but calming. Vicious, but benevolent. The ground quaked beneath our feet. We passed maids and guards on our way here, but they were all unconscious. We suspect those weak of heart will faint near your presence. And when we arrived in the room, there was no fire or signs of an explosion.”
“What else?”
“You were speaking, but the language you spoke was nothing I could comprehend. Your voice also echoed. Like two people were talking simultaneously.”
“This is all… unbelievable.”
“There’s more.”
“More?”
“Yes, and this is likely the worst of all. I could feel your overwhelming power; however, you had no presence.”
“No presence? That’s not possible if you could feel overwhelming power.”
“I know it’s unbelievable, but that’s the truth,” she says.
I look at Niklaus, who has an unconscious Selina in his arms. “A monster will always be a monster.”
“Niklaus, now is not—”
“So?”
“What?”
“So, what if I’m a monster? What if I destroyed Trist? Killed thousands. Scarred even more. What difference does it make? Are you going to condemn me? Criticise my every being? Am I an outlet for your petty pride?”
“My… what?” Niklaus places Selina on the ground and walks up to me. “What did you say?”
Louisa shoves herself between the two of us, and says, “Stop it, both of you. We have enough problems as is. We don’t need your in-fighting as another issue.” Niklaus glares at me for another second, then turns around and walks away. “What’s gotten into you, Haruki?”
“Nothing.”
‘A lady’s secrets are her own to reveal. No matter how gut-wrenching,’ Hafiz’s words ring in my head as she stands before me. That voice said something similar. Is Louisa hiding something from me? Or am I being manipulated?
“Haruki? Is there something on your mind?”
“No, there’s nothing. Let’s go. The assailants could still be in the vicinity.”
Louisa looks at me, sceptical of my refute. But she does not pursue the matter further. We leave the room as it was and make a swift escape out of the east wing. When we arrive at the courtyard, we see Niklaus staring a group of cloaked people down.
“Are those…?”
“Yes. They are the assailants.”
“Assailants, you say?” asks the centre-most assailants. “Is that all we are to you? Mere assailants, Haruki Ryu.”
“Yes. You all are nothing more to me. I don’t need to know your affiliations, nor do I care for it.”
“Tch, You damn monster. How dare you look down on us?”
“Do you know there are monsters that hide in plain sight? These monsters are cowards, you see. They are quick to blame others to cover up their insecure thoughts.”
Niklaus tilts his head over his shoulder and looks at me. “Are you calling me a monster?”
“Think what you will. I said what I said.”
The man from before draws a sword from under his cloak. He runs forward as the four behind him chant a spell. Niklaus reacts faster than the man can attack. In three simple steps, he draws his sword, slashes his opponent's neck, and sheathes his sword. Just three steps. One second for each step and the central man dies. Niklaus glares at the four, who are cowering. The sudden pause in chanting disrupts the formation of the spell and a massive explosion scatters the four mages like dust in the wind. Niklaus leaps onto this chance and attacks each mage, one by one. And one by one, each mage witnesses their demise.
“And you say I’m the monster.”
Louisa and I watch as Niklaus stands over five corpses. Droplets fall from the sky before turning into a shower. The rain washes the blood from Niklaus’ sword, but not the guilt from his eyes. His hands, trembling, reach for his face. When they do, he drops to his knees and cries out like a weeping child.
“Niklaus!”
Louisa runs to her guilt-ridden brother. Monsters hiding in plain sight are cowards. They are simply… “Pathetic.”
“I see you’ve taken care of my problem.” The duke arrives with an armed army on his tail and a butler at his side, holding an umbrella overhead. “And here I thought you’d take forever to solve it.”
“Is there a problem, Duke Reinhart?”
The butler raises the umbrella to show his crooked brow and grimace. “Why, you ask? Well, this is my land. The feet intruding here do not belong, so I came to solve an ageing problem. But to my surprise, that problem’s initial solution finally arrived. It came in the shape of a heartless beast. I saw the way Niklaus pounced on his prey. Savage and ruthless, like a wolf.”
“Monstrous, you mean.”
“Monstrous? How so?”
“Ruthless, yes. Savage, I agree. But so is a monster. You see, a wolf hidden in sheep's clothing will become a sheep. And the longer it remains a sheep… The longer it feeds on grass… The more it waits, patiently… that’s when it becomes a sheep. But when it finally reveals itself… When this ‘sheep’ pounces, that’s when it realises its cowardice. Blood that bled red now reveals itself to be grey. The succulent meat it digests tastes bland. And the pride it envisioned becomes a nightmare.”
“Then the wolf dyes itself in sorrow, you say.” Duke Reinhart looks at Niklaus. “Is he broken?”
“No, he’s just realising himself.”
Duke Reinhart bursts into laughter. “Realising himself? Now? After he’s committed an atrocious act?”
“What about you?”
“Me?”
“When did you realise yourself?”
“What are you talking about?”
“Monsters hiding in plain sight are cowards.”
“So, you say.”
“But monsters who do not hide themselves are just monsters. Duke Reinhart, your empire will fall. Selina will leave you to rot. And the ‘toys’ you play with will revolt. So, I’d watch my back if I were you.”
“You’ve got a big mouth on you, boy.” He signals to a guard, who draws his sword and raises it to my neck. “I should watch my back? Boy, remember whose yard we’re in. Intruders should watch their backs.”
“Intruders burnt your yard down before. Don’t you think they can do it again?”
He keeps a glare focused on me. “By tomorrow I want you gone.”
“Believe me, I don’t want to stay here for another night.”
Amidst the crashing water droplets, Niklaus’ cries travel through the corridors of Duke Reinhart’s manor. An entire night of wailing soon tires him out. The arrival of the new day, however, did not bring a fresh Niklaus.
“His door is locked.”
“He feels guilty.”
“Wouldn’t you?”
“No.”
“Same. Those people were part of the Illuminati. As demi-humans, Niklaus and I were targets for their new world. So were you. I didn’t know them, so their first impression made me hate them.”
“Enough to kill them?”
“Enough to put an end to their organisation.”
“That’s harsh.”
“What can we do about it? We live in a harsh world.” She looks at the locked door, her eyes drooping with grief. “Do you think he’ll recover?”
“I don’t know.”
“Couldn’t you give a more positive answer?”
“I couldn’t.”
She looks at me, confused. “You’re different.”
“Am I?”
“Yes. It’s kinda cool.”
“Is that so?”
She pouts, “And a tad annoying.”
I’ve changed? Well, I do feel… different. Was it my conversation with that voice? No, I think I’m becoming more like my old self—
“My old self…?”
“Did you say something?”
I shake my head. What was that? I feel like my memory is a mess right now. ‘My old self’. Just what does that mean?
Later in the night we dine with Duke Reinhart again. “So,” he says, angrily chopping away at a steak, “You want to stay here for another few days?”
“Yes. My brother is still—”
“Declined.”
“What? Why?”
He looks at me and smiles, “Because intruders are targeting my life.”
This sly bastard. If I could, I would rip his throat from his pigish neck.
“Duke Reinhart, if you are referring to our conversation yesterday, then I must humbly apologise if my words seemed threatening.”
“Hmph, No amount of apologising will—”
“But I must say, you are a brave human.”
“Hmm?”
“Well, how could I do anything but call you brave? Even after the assailants swore to exact their revenge by sending their absolute best, you will send us, your saviours away to brave this impeding danger.”
“They will… what?”
“Yes. It was quite the show of revenge. With his dying breath, Jacob (Alleged name) swore that the upper echelon of the Illuminati would avenge his untimely death. And you are confident you can stop an army whose sole aim is to kill you and every person in this mansion. I applaud your brave choice.” I stand up and grab Louisa’s arm.
“Wai—”
“Let’s not keep this confident man occupied. He has much to tend to.”
“Wait!” The duke’s sudden outburst silences the room.
“Is something the matter, Duke Reinhart?”
“I…”
“Don’t concern yourself with us. I will make sure we are out of your hair as soon as humanely possible.”
“Please… don’t think you’re overstaying your welcome. We… welcome you with open arms.”
“Is that so? I thought intruders were not allowed here?”
“Well, you’re in luck, since none of you are intruders.”
“That’s good. Then, Louisa and I will not bore you any longer. Let’s go.”
“Was that wise?” she asks.
“It was the best solution.”
This should buy us enough time to solve your problem, Selina.
Louisa knocks on the door. “Niklaus, it’s Louisa. May I come in?” He doesn’t answer. But that does not stop Louisa from knocking again. “Niklaus, I’m not leaving until you answer.” A few minutes pass as Louisa stays true to her word. However, she is completely ignored. Louisa turns to me and says, “Maybe we should give him some more time.” “Maybe.” I grab the door handle and push. The door snaps open and I enter. “Haruki!” “I’m coming in.” The atmosphere in the room is so thick I could cut it with a sword. Despite the afternoon sun shining in a clear sky, Niklaus’ room is like a space of its own. A dark, gloomy space where the light seeping through the open door is the only miracle this room wanted. Hidden in the darkest corner he could find, Niklaus crouches in a ball. He looks up at me, his eyes completely lifeless. Then he turns his gaze to the abyss again. “Niklaus, we—” “Get up.” “Haruki!” “Are you just going to wallow in your self-pity for eternity? Or do you want to do
His body shines a bright white colour. A long serpent-like tail slithers out from his lower back. His body grows taller than any of the surrounding trees. And his head morphs into a scaly, serpent-like head with horns growing from his cranium. The human Haruki impersonated becomes this being of utter beauty. No words could describe this awe-inspiring scene. As I stare at his mighty figure, tears stream down my face. My arms are unwilling to wipe them away, and my head refuses to move its gaze from Haruki. But my mind does not care for this display of beauty. Instead, it shows a replay of my crimes last night. Enough… That’s… enough… ‘Niklaus.’ Haruki? ‘I am not Haruki, only an incarnation of his mind. In this form, I am unable to process thought, so I sent my consciousness into you.’ How is that possible? ‘I… can’t explain it. But just know that I am your ally. And I’m here to help you.’ I’m beyond help, Haruki. I killed those men. It’s as you said, five lives no longer live bec
The process makes my thought process come to an immediate halt. Before, though, I send my consciousness into Niklaus, who stares at me in awe, and erase all his guilt. After my consciousness returns, I look down at the river. “It’s complete.” “By the gods, Lizard, ya a unique specimen, I tell ya. Scales as black as the night and a divine aura like none I’ve seen. I’ve never seen sucha beautiful skin before. Ya even brought a tear ta ma eye.” My scales start peeling away. Gaia, as quick as a mouse, jumps to collect them all. One falls before Niklaus, who finally snaps out of his daze. He bends to pick it up. “So, these are dragon scales?” “Be careful, boy. Freshly shed scales are still fragile, which makes em easier ta mould. But that also makes em fragile enough ta break if they land too hard.” After collecting all of the scales, Gaia runs back to his store, saying, “Come in a couple hours. I’ll have ya weapons ready then.” “He’s a busy dwarf,” I say, returning to my human form. “
“It’s Louisa. She betrayed us.” “What… do you… mean? She… betrayed… AARRGGHH!!” The pain, like thousands of needles poking every inch of my body, intensifies. “What’s… going on?” “Every cell in your body is corroding.” “Selina…?” “I assume Selina broke the Summoning Contract between the two of you. And since you don’t have any connection to this realm, it’s rejecting you.” “Rejecting him? What do you mean?” “You’ve heard about the Summoning Contract, correct? Well, that contract is more beneficial to the summon than it is to the summoner. Every realm exists on a different frequency. And so do races from the different realms. When someone like Haruki crosses into a new realm without going through a Realm Gate, then the realm will recognise him as a foreign object and proceed to eliminate him.” “Eliminate… him…” “The process is gruesome. First, you will feel a needle-like pain throughout your body. The pain is enough to kill people instantly. But I’d say that spares them from wha
The wind gusts through the wasteland—formerly known as Mico. The beautiful cityscape Haruki and Louisa shared their date exploring is a deserted land. The clouds overhead mask the sun's light and invite darkness to roam the land. The barren land quakes as two evil entities meet. "..." "Have you made a decision, Elisabeth?" asks a man. The shadows mask him. His voice, deep, causes the earth to rumble. Elisabeth, leader of the Illuminati, stares at the man from under a veil. Everything about her, from her white dress to her golden hair and blue eyes radiate light. "Yes," she says, "I have. And I decided not to." "Despite witnessing my grand victory over Grand Order, you still defy me? Know, Elisabeth, that your measly organisation is like an insignificant bug to mine. And I despise bugs. They only know how to buzz around your ear. Do you know what I do to bugs like that, Elisabeth?" "Let me guess. You crush them, yes?" "Yes. With all my might." "Should I take your words as a threa
I had this dream. Well, I say dream, but it is more akin to a memory than a dream. I was lying in a field of hydrangeas, soaking in the warmth of the mid-afternoon sun. “Hello,” I heard a voice say. This person’s voice was beautiful, soft and warm like the sun. I opened my eyes and saw the most beautiful girl ever. Her eyes were a soft blue hue. Her hair a river of gold and skin pale almost ghost-like. “W-who…?” I stuttered. The girl smiled and I felt my heart tighten. “…” Her mouth moved and she said something. But I don’t remember what she said. What is it that she said? “Hey, Haruki. Are you awake?” “…” “Hmm. Are you asleep?” “…” “I wonder…” I don’t know why I didn’t open my eyes yet. Maybe I just want to tease Elisabeth a bit. She gets on my bed and leans closer to me. My heart races as I feel her breath on my skin. She gets ever so closer. I slowly open my eyes but to my surprise, I don’t see anyone. Was I imagining her here? “So, you were awake,” she says. “Elisabeth
Elisabeth has been behind my altered memory for the past two days. The reason I forgot all about my past experiences and interactions is because of her magic—I’m sure of it. Even right now, I can only remember my purpose for being here. But why would she do this instead of attacking me? Emihiko said she loves me, but I find that hard to believe. Did she do this to recruit me into her organisation? She knew I would never join her willingly, so she used magic to manipulate me. Yeah, that can only be the most logical reason for her not attacking… Wait. How did I even recover my memories? Does her ability have a limit? No, I doubt that. If she could manipulate my memories, she can’t be someone normal. “Then can she…” “She? Who are you talking about?” “E-Elisabeth? No, I… It’s just another memory fragment I can’t seem to grasp. It’s nothing important.” She stares at me intensely. Shoot. I accidentally let my thoughts slip. If she can manipulate memories, does she have a mind-reading abili
“Help me!” “I have a family! Lady Elisabeth, plea—” Elisabeth walks past every cell in the dungeon. Screams pleading for her forgiveness reach her ears and bring a smile to her face. A sadistic smile. She walks to the end of the corridor, to a heavily guarded cell and latches the door open. After entering, her eyes fall to the person chained to the wall. “How are you feeling today, my sweet Ivy?” Ivy – dishevelled and bruised all over – looks Elisabeth in the eyes, then cracks a smile. “I feel wonderful. But it’s been five days since you captured me. I think I’m ready to leave.” “Still defiant as you were five days ago, are you? Well, I never expected you to submit willingly. Not after his death.” Ivy jumps forward, her face inches away from Elisabeth’s, but is held back by the chains. She stares at an unfazed Elisabeth. “Did I hit a nerve?” “I’m going to kill you. In the most brutal way I can think of!” “That’s not very ladylike of you. Plus, your village had it coming. They com
