Codex of the Forgotten

Chapter 2 - Unpaired place

"We were once on the same side," Dante answered flatly. "But the guard is too weak in facing the darkness that is now rising again."

Lucille looked at Ethan. "And that's why we need him."

Ethan shook his head quickly. "I don't know anything about war, codex, or this dark world. I can't even understand the strange dreams that have emerged since I touched this stone!"

"Dream?" Dante asked quickly. "What do you see?"

Ethan took a deep breath, then answered slowly. "A tower ... very high, floating on the lake of fire. There are sounds ... like thousands of people pray and cry."

Lucille and Dante looked at each other.

"It's not a dream," Lucille whispered. "That's Codex's memory. You're looking at the forgotten historical fragments."

"And the tower," added Dante, "is the fourth gate. If it is open, then this world will run out."

Ethan was silent. A run out of a world? He just saved enough to pay for a rented house next month, and now he is the key to the destruction of the world?

Ethan still can't believe, "I'm just an ordinary person. I can't even punch people without shaking!"

"Not yet," Lucille said softly. "But that fragment has chosen you. And the time is almost gone. We can train you, or let the world blame you when everything collapses."

Dante looked at him sharply. "You can run away, Ethan. But they will continue to hunt you. Every night. Every step. Or ..."

"... I survived and learned," Ethan interrupted himself.

He clenched his fist. Don't know why, but there is something in him - a push, maybe instinct - who told him to move forward.

"What should I do?"

Lucille sighed. "Follow us. There is a shelter. That's where everything will begin."

Dante turned to Ethan, his expression seemed to not believe in that choice, but he did not argue.

When the three of them stepped towards the end of the alley which was vaguely glowing by the city lights, Ethan turned for a moment.

He saw the shadow of the last voidborn creature before disappearing. Not moving. Just watching.

As if reminding him: "You are ours now."

The sky has changed when they left the narrow alley. Clouds hang heavy, not only because of the weather, but like something bigger-older-moved quietly behind the fog of the night.

Lucille led them to a path that was unknown to Ethan. Even though he was born and raised in this city, but the alleys they passed that night were not part of the Boston he knew. The walls of the building soared, jelled empty, without sound. Even the street lights don't turn on.

Dante walked the back. He didn't speak a word. But Ethan occasionally caught his cold gaze - a view that did not fully believe. As if the man judged whether Ethan deserves to live or not.

Lucille stopped in front of a rusty steel door, hidden between two empty stores. He touched a small symbol on the door frame - a circle symbol with two vertical lines. In an instant, the air in front of the door trembled. The steel is sparkling, turning into a clear glass surface.

"Welcome to the unpaired area," Lucille whispered, then stepped in.

Ethan did not comment anything, followed, and once he crossed the door, the world changed.

---

The room in it is not from this world. The ceiling towering without limits, like a giant cathedral dome. The walls are made of dark-throbbing stones, as if alive. Ancient symbols shine dim in every corner, and the air contains the scent of wet soil, metal, and something like fire.

Ethan is spinning, standing. "What is this place?"

"The first library," Lucille answered. "The last rest of the guard order."

In the middle of the room stands a long table full of ancient paper sheets, maps that move on their own, and a metal ball that floats slowly in the air. Lucille put the fragments brought by Ethan to the middle of the table. The light from the object immediately propagated throughout the room, forming a complicated pattern on the floor and ceiling.

"What happened?" Ethan asked in panic.

"Codex is reading your footsteps," Dante said quietly, for the first time talking without an angry tone.

Lucille looked at Ethan seriously. "Starting tonight, the fragment will open the hidden inside parts. Talent. Memories that are not yours. But also curse."

"Why me?" Whispered Ethan. "Why not you guys? You are clearly stronger. It's better prepared," he continued, his expression seemed to bargain.

"Because we have been bound to the other codex," Lucille said. "We can no longer be 'opening.' But you're still pure."

Ethan looked down. "My world last night was a broken motorbike and a shipment. Today, I was chosen by something that I couldn't even explain."

Lucille shifted one map on the table. "There are four gates sealed throughout the world. Every fragment will point one. But we don't know which first is open."

Ethan touched the map. Suddenly, one point in the northeast shining red.

"Is this in ... Iceland?"

Lucille nodded. "The northern gate. Previously guarded by five guards. But since it collapsed, the place was controlled by creatures from the gap. And now, someone tried to open it."

Dante leaned on the wall. "If the gate is opened without a complete key, what comes out is not just voidborn."

Ethan frowned. "You mean?"

Lucille closed her eyes. "The creatures that even the gods forgot. Codex was not just a prison, Ethan. He was also the door to memories of the world before history was written. Anything was sealed behind the gate, once destroyed the world once before."

The atmosphere became quiet. Even the walls seemed to help hold your breath.

Ethan felt his body shaky. He is not ready for all this. But he also knew, too much had happened to be able to pretend to be normal again.

"So ... what should I do?"

Lucille touched her shoulder. "You have to train yourself. Codex will give you strength, but only if you know how to open the door in you."

"I ... don't know anything about magic, or sword, or ..." Ethan's words were stuck in the esophagus.

"You know what it feels scared," interrupted Dante suddenly. "And survive."

They are staring. There was something in Dante's voice that made Ethan believe: this man might not like him, but he knows how to face the dark world.

Lucille smiled faintly. "We start tonight. But remember, once this training starts, there is no way back. You will be sought, hunted, and tested."

Ethan took a deep breath. Before finally, "I'm ready," he replied.
