CHAPTER 8. A deal

"Look who has the guts to show up for the engagement," Tanya's mother spoke up, breaking the pindrop silence.

Laughter erupted from the hall.

"Elena and Damien. What an unpleasant surprise to see you", an uncle's voice rang out.

"So the cleaner who knocked you up still has the guts to come back after all these years," another aunt chipped in, her lips tilting in a mocking smile.

"Elena's parents' company has gone bankrupt in case you're planning to come back to work," someone added, and they all laughed.

Elena shifted uncomfortably under the intense mocking stares of her family and other guests of the wedding.

She was not surprised at their mockery.

Her hand was lifted by Damien's as he entwined their fingers together. She turned to face him and saw that he was also unfazed at their actions.

Together, they walked to her parents' table in the hall.
