Dammit.
Tsumugi storms out of the meeting room, through the empty halls, underneath the orange lights, and into the ruined wing of the Curia. This place, that was to be Takakumo’s first orphanage, that was to be her lifelong dream fulfilled, that was to be Asuka and countless others’ homes, ruined by a singular night. Hell, even if that bomb didn’t go off, that dream could still never be a reality.
Dammit dammit DAMMIT!
Those selfish fucks never had any intention of listening to her. Why would they? Why should they care? They have more important things to worry about, like drinking, smoking, fancy cars, dinner parties, you know, what really matters in life.
“How did it go–”
“Bear with me a moment, Haru.”
It takes Haru a moment to realize what’s happening. She’s kissing her. As in, on the lips. It only lasted half a second but it definitely happened. It’s as though she sucked her heartbeat right into her mouth. When she finally broke away, it felt like she was just struck by lightning.
“You’re the only person I can trust, Haru.” Tsumugi whispers into her ear. She sounds like she’s on the brink of tears. “I don’t know what to believe anymore.”
“It’s okay.” She hugs back as tight as she can. Tsumugi is taller than her but she feels so small in her arms. “It’s alright, it’s alright.”
“Everything’s so messed up, Haru. Everything is spiraling out of my control.” Tsumugi shakes her head. “What am I going to do?” “Slow down, slow down. What happened?”Haru guides Tsumugi over to a piece of rubble big enough for the both of them to sit on. There, she spills everything. About Tomoe’s double cross. About Gleam. About the traitor. About the duel tomorrow. Everything. Haru can only slowly nod as she slowly takes everything in.
“After I win tomorrow… if I win tomorrow… what do I even do next?”
“What next…?” Haru fiddles with KANNIBAL’s strings as she listens. “I guess you root out the traitor.”
“But how?”“How…? I don’t know how exactly, but maybe you’re worrying too much.”
“...”“Okay, maybe that’s not the best word choice but you know what I mean.”
“Let’s see who’s in danger here. Myself, my sister, my aunt, my best friend, and heck, I would be sad if either Florence or Tomoe died. In spite of everything, I’ve known them my whole life. And worse still, any one of them could be the traitor. One of them is the reason why Asuka died. I don’t– I don’t want to think that any of them would do such a thing but…” She shakes her head.“Yeah… it seems like a really difficult position to be in.” Haru scratches the back of her head. “I guess someone’s going to have to die.”
“But it doesn’t have to be that way. There’s a perfect move here. Some way to strike back where no one has to die.”
“But what if you don’t find it? What then?”
“I have to find it.” Tsumugi’s eyes go into a frenzy. “I will find it. I willfind it.”“Tsumugi, Tsumugi. I want you to look at me.” She does. Her eyes aren’t hers. They’re that of a wild animal’s. “You’re asking too much of yourself.”
“You don’t think I can do it, don’t you?”“Neither do you.” Haru sighs and grabs Tsumugi by the shoulders. “Listen, I’m going to share something with you, alright?”
Tsumugi nods her head.“When I was a little girl. Maybe around ten or eleven. My mama, the only person who ever cared about me, died in a drive-by shooting. She wasn’t even the mercenary group’s target, she was just caught in the crossfire.”
Haru winces. She feels a strange kind of pain. Like she’s sticking her fingers into ancient wounds. “I was… alone. I didn’t have anyone to rely on. I cried a lot back then. No one would take me in. No one except for the mercenary groups so long as I was useful. I had to do horrible things just to be scouted. I hated it. I hated constantly wondering whose mother or father or son or daughter I just killed. I hated it so much. But I did what I had to to survive.”
Haru nods to herself. “But I did what I had to to survive. And I would do it all again. And you know what? Looking back, all the things I used to hate so much almost feel invisible. I really don’t regret a thing. Alright? Not. A. Thing. You’re allowed to make mistakes. So long as you can live with, avoid, or accept the consequences, the world will make a place for you. Hell, you might get addicted to making mistakes.”Haru wipes a tear from her eye. When did she start crying? “I miss that place, you know. I used to think having to resort to killing meant that I made a mistake, that I had to be ashamed. But once I realized that it was easier to just own up to my mistakes, I stopped feeling so awful. Matter of fact, I miss being enemies with everyone I cross. I miss looking over my shoulder for every little th. I miss killing. My mistakes made me who I am. They taught me where I really belonged.”
“...I see.” Tsumugi wipes her eyes. “Thank you, Haru… for sharing that with me.”
“No problem. Just, you know, something to think about for the future.”
“It’s okay to make mistakes… And sometimes, mistakes can be good?”
“Yeah, you’re getting it.” “Heh. Alright. Mistakes are just… happy accidents. Thanks, Haru. I think that I can see clearly now.”“No problem.”
Haru’s about to get up when Tsumugi promptly sits herself on her lap. “Now, what say you we get back to where we left off?” The silky smoothness of Tsumugi’s words worms its way directly into her heart. She’s powerless. There’s nothing else for her to do but to surrender herself into her clutches.

“Ayo. It’s about time you showed up, Florence.” Tsuki has her legs up on the coffee table. “Please, have a seat.”
“That was close, Tsuki. Too close.” Florence sits down on the armchair next to the fireplace, across from Tsuki. “I thought we were supposed to be in this together.”
“No harm, no foul.” She waves aside his allegations. “Anyway, it’s only a matter of time before you conspirators are uncovered. I suggest you make your move quickly.”
“I know that.” Florence bites his thumbnail. “But until there’s a weakness to exploit, we have no choice but to bide our time.”
“No. Not quite. There’s no we here. There’s only you, the traitors, and me, with a finger on your pulse.”
“Why don’t you just turn us in, then? You have every right to do so.”
“Because we both have something to gain from your continued existence–” A hacking cough bursts from Tsuki’s mouth. With trembling fingers, she retrieves a small vial of dubious liquid from her cloak. Florence recognizes it. A stabilizer, meant to suppress troublesome sorceries. Its murkiness is directly proportional to its effectivity. And in this case, it’s almost mud-like. She sighs as she gulps the last of the liquid and tucks the vial back into her cloak.
“Listen, Florence.” Tsuki clears her throat. “I’m cutting you a reasonable deal here. Just lay off of Tsumugi. That’s all I ask, have asked, and will ever ask of you. Apart from that. Everyone else is fair game. Especially that bitch Tomoe. Seems like a good deal, yeah?”
“Yeah… right.”
“Alright!” Tsuki claps her hands together with a loud clink. “That settles it, then. I get the feeling that this is the beginning of a very beautiful friendship.”
A stiff wind blows through the Curia’s courtyard, the grass bowing in its wake. All councilors are present. On one side are Florence, Gleam, Tsuki, Kikimi, and Tsumugi. On the other, stands Tomoe and Jessica. “Correct me if I’m wrong but, I believe it’s the challenged that has the first choice of champion.” In spite of the sheer numbers disparity between the two sides, Tomoe stands tall, with her chin upturned just slightly. “I opt to select Jessica as my champion.” Tsumugi steps forward. “I select myself as my champion.” “A bold move.” Tomoe strikes a thinking pose. “I can respect that.” Both Jessica and Tsumugi meet in the middle of the battlefield. Both of them shake hands before stepping exactly ten paces away from each other. “Auntie.” “Yes, Tsumugi?”“Don’t you dare hold back or surrender.”“I won’t.” Jessica raises her left hand to show Tsumugi its back. “In exchange for a sum from the treasury, I’ve contracted with Tomoe, the only condition is that I can’t hold back. Be
“STELLAR!” Gleam’s the first to engage. It’s only natural that the one with mastery over ‘light’ that she’s able to move the fastest. In a fraction of a second, a dozen cuts. In a full second, a hundred cuts. Jessica splays her wings and raises them in a kind of shell around herself to block Gleam’s relentless attacks. The shrill sound of metal grinding against metal fills both of their ears. While Jessica and Gleam are engaged, Tsuki and Tsumugi begin their approach towards each other. Using massive amounts of built up steam to propel herself, Tsuki bounds across the landscape, accelerating with every step she takes. “Gharab” Tsumugi sheds her old wing, summons a new one and begins to match Tsuki’s speed. The two start to circle each other. “Hahaha! You’re faster than I remember, Tsumugi!” “So are you, Tsuki.” Gleam’s voice cuts through their battle. “HURRY!” A powerful magic inflicts an equally intense drain on the user. Gleam’s fast, but she’s not fast forever. Tsumugi’s on a c
“Have you ever felt less than human, Tsumugi?”“I don’t like to think about it.” Tsumugi sits down on the chair next to Tsuki’s bed. “I am who my choices make me just as much as I am who my blood makes me. I am… me.” “What Tomoe said yesterday really got to you, didn’t it?” “It wasn’t just Tomoe…” She closes her eyes and sees the crowd in front of her, their jeers still echoing in her ears. Tsumugi tilts her head, as though emptying the thought through her ear. “And you?” “I try not to think about it.” Tsuki gestures at her body. “But it’s getting harder and harder to not notice with my condition.” “I see.” Tsumugi nods, maybe a little too much, but she wants to let Tsuki know that she’s absolutely listening. “Do you want me to tuck you in?” “I’m not five. I can tuck myself in.” Tsuki tries to sit up but her strength fails her. “...” “Almost got it.” “...”“Alllllmost.” “...”Tsuki lies back down and sighs. “Alright. Fine.” “You don’t have to be ashamed.” “I’m a grown-ass
“We need Tsuki dead.” Florence has his legs propped up on the coffee table. “Tonight.”Kikimi sighs. She figured that the last bombing wouldn’t be the end of their killing, but to think that they’d have to do it so soon… “Is there no other way?” “Why do we want this Tsuki chick dead anyway? She seems like she’s going to keel over in a stiff breeze.” Kazuko, still in her maidservant disguise, states in the bluntest way possible. “We can’t risk it.” Florence kicks off his boots. It’s been a tremendously long night and an even more exhausting day. “A tiger is most dangerous when it’s cornered. She might spill the instant it becomes clear to her we’re not acting in Tsumugi’s best interest.” “Yes… Without a doubt, that girl is… dangerous.” Kikimi nods her head. “We’re going to be okay, right?” “Of course.” Florence has to muster up every single ounce of courage he has to say that. “Even Tsuki is only a road bump.” “Do we really have no other choice?” “If you have any suggestions, I s
“Gleam.” “Tsumugi.” The two shake hands. Gleam’s grip is firm and Tsumugi’s is gentle. Flanking their sides are their respective lap dogs. Tsumugi with Haru, and Gleam with Kuroko. “Right, well, let me get straight to the point. I have a plan to root out the traitor.” Tsumugi starts. “But I need your help. I need some muscle that isn’t us–” “Done.”“Wha– just like that?” “Yep. Just like that.” Gleam pats Kuroko on the shoulder. “Kuroko here will see to your every need.” “But… why?” “Because you’re my friend and I trust in you. Why else?” Gleam beams, her pure aura blinding Tsumugi even through her thick glasses.“...huh, thanks.” “No problem.” “Though, word of advice, I suggest you don’t trust so readily, Gleam.” “I simply do what is most natural to me.” Gleam shrugs. “Heh.” Tsumugi crosses her arms and smiles, it’s such a pure smile that Gleam has to squint to meet Tsumugi’s eyes. “Well, I suppose sometimes a pure heart can be a good thing.” Gleam nods. “Anywho, I antici
“Ready?” “Ready.” In the dead of night, Kikimi and Kazuko creep through the empty halls of the Curia. Kazuko hardly makes a peep while Kikimi tries her best to keep up. “Everything good?” “Yeah… yeah. Everything’s fine.” She can’t get the image of the girl standing over all those corpses out of her mind. When she kills Tsuki, will she be the same way? How much of herself will remain? She doesn’t know.“Kagami… please give me strength.” She offers a quiet prayer.“Hm?” “Nothing. Nothing.” “Well, look sharp. We’re here.” The door to Tsuki’s room stands before them, tall and imposing. Kikimi touches a gloved finger below the door handle, where the lock should be, and turns it into a silent bomb. The sorcery of Mute Charges. That is the nature of the magic contained within the artifact. Whatever Kikimi touches with the glove becomes a bomb. All she needs to do is snap her fingers and the lock should detonate. ‘Click’Sure enough, the lock explodes without a sound. There’s a litt
“Come on.”Tsuki beats her chest. “Come on! I know you’ve got a bit of juice left in there!” Tsuki almost smashes straight through her chest. She can’t give up now. Not when there are people fighting to keep her alive, if even just for a second longer. It seems that Tsumugi took what she said to heart and set a trap to catch the traitors. Now all she needs to do is seal the deal and join the fray. If there’s one last thing she gets to do on this Earth, she wants it to be for Tsumugi’s sake. “Come on.” She closes her eyes and focuses, really focuses. Everything that she is, everything that she was, and everything that she will be hinges on this moment. “You can do this.” And with that last push, she finally manages to stand. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––“I’ll take care of Kuroko, you focus on Tot– I mean, Haru.” “But–” “I don’t know what kinda grudge you have against Kuroko but I suggest you put it away for now.”“You say that bu
Kazuko wrenches her rapier free from Tsuki’s grip and immediately launches into a flurry of slashes. Tsuki raises her hands in an ‘X’ formation, forming an impervious metal shell that the rapier simply glances off of. Even what little scratches form are quickly covered up by Tsuki’s living metal. Tsuki doesn’t wait for Kazuko to reveal an opening or anything, she just drops her guard, tanks the damage, and delivers a solid punch to her chest.“Hrk–!” Blood comes out of Kazuko’s mouth as she’s sent flying backwards. She skids along the ground until she hits the edge of the roof. It takes her a second to draw herself back up onto her feet. “Damn it.” “Heh. Still got it.” Tsuki tries to smirk but she breaks into a coughing fit and the effect is ruined. “Don’t force it.” “Yeah, yeah, I know.” “OI!” Kazuko jabs her finger at Haru’s direction. “Don’t think we’re finished just yet!” She turns to Kikimi. “Give me your glove.” “But–” “God, you’re useless.” Without wasting another second
