(…What?)
Mr. Clive: “Students, please calm down! We need to evacuate, there’s been a murder, and two students are already presumed dead!”
(Who…?)
All were panic-stricken, the sudden emergence of ambulances and overhead flying helicopters was an initial warning. Now the news had finally broken out.
Arian only stood in thought, as the entire crowd kept erupting with screams. Everyone was pushing through, trying to get away, but he couldn’t help but wonder.
Eion: “Who… Mr. Clive, who are the dead students?!”
Mr. Clive seemed to catch Eion’s question, ceasing his speech on mannerly evacuation, he turned to him.
Mr. Clive: “I’m told we don’t know for sure, but from what we can tell… One of them was Eion.”
The crowd gathered near the teacher suddenly froze in their track. All knew his name.
Crowd Member: “He was favored by Apollo, and he died?!”
(No it… it can’t be…!!)
Mr. Clive: “We will have more information on the circumstances of his death later! For now, please, evacuate in a calm and orderly manner!”
(I had left him alone… and now he’s…)
Arian stood, unmoving in his grief. Eion was his path to salvation. He had promised himself he’d save him. And now he was no more.
The crowd soon dispersed, Arian was urged to leave with them, but he didn’t go far.
He walked along the campus, completely buried in memories, he didn’t want to wake from his dream.
(How could he have left me all alone?)
Aurora was taken to the hospital immediately. She was even filed in for emergency care, although there was no real threat to her life. All that was really needed was some over-the-counter medicine and a couple of bandages. But Aurora was not particularly happy as this good news was given to her. This whole time she’d been despairing, there was something heavy weighing on her heart.
(Was this the correct path?)
She was told to rest at the hospital for the night, in case any ‘unforeseen complications’ arose, so she complied.
She lay in bed, half-dreaming. There was little guilt disturbing her though. The only thing that interested her was whether there could’ve been a better option. And one more thing, what was Lord Xuth really planning?
She woke up the next day still in the hospital bed, the nurse noticing this, informed her that her mother had come to see her. After agreeing to the visit, her mother rushed inside.
Alin: “Oh dear! What’s become of you?”
Aurora: “Mom, I promise it's nothing, really! How are you and dad holding up?”
Alin: “Look at you! In this sorry state and still worrying about us!”
“But I’m so sorry, your father couldn’t make it today for the visit, they needed him at work…”
Aurora: “Mom, don’t worry about it.”
Aurora almost added that she shouldn’t have come either, but stopped herself and realized that would only put her mother in more distress.
Aurora: “Mom, listen… I’m already feeling fine, but the nurse needs some sort of parental confirmation to get me out of here. Could you please sign it?”
Alin: “But sweetie, what if you start feeling bad again while you come back home… you know me and your father aren’t always at home to take care of you…”
Aurora: “I’ll be fine mom, besides I'm going to be working most of the day, too. I’ll be safe.”
In truth, she wasn’t, but to kill 2 birds with one stone she brought the notion up again. They’d long been discussing her getting a job early, and now with the agreement she had with Lord Xuth, she’d need some explanation as to how she got in possession of that kind of money.
Alin: “Well… I suppose you know best, darling.” After leaning over and dropping a kiss on her daughter’s forehead she added. “Who am I to disobey the Gods’ favored, after all?”
She chuckled and called for the nurse, soon she’d left her room to sign the document for Aurora’s checkout, but what she’d said stayed with Aurora for a while.
“Gods favored, huh?”
Eventually, that day she was let out. Finalizing the paperwork had taken way longer than she had anticipated, to the point even her mother had to go back to work before it was done. By the time she left the hospital, it was already past afternoon. She decided to go straight home.
Later in the day while she was resting at home the news came on.
Reporter: “We have with us right now, the school event’s organizer, P.E. teacher Mr. Clive. Mr. Clive, can you please tell the people at home what happened yesterday?
Mr. Clive: “…I have limited information on the matter, the only thing I know is that two students are reported missing, and well… One of them is suspected to be dead.”
Reported: “Who would this unfortunate soul be?”
Even through the screen, Mr. Clive’s discomfort was obvious. There was something he knew that he wasn’t saying, or rather, couldn’t say.
Mr. Clive: “It is with the greatest grievance that I announce, that our school’s very own Eion Emazonian… is reported deceased.”
Aurora, hearing this suddenly relived that scene. She saw again Tifon’s gruesome state and visualized his crumbling corpse murdering Eion. It was almost too much for her to bear, she ran to the washroom, trying to hold back vomiting.
After spilling her guts out she raised herself over the toilet seat. Moving up to the mirror, she looked at herself with empty eyes. She remembered what the Lord had told her on the balcony.
“ ‘Family first’ … Had he planned his own son’s death? Right from the beginning…?”
“Who are you, Lord Xuth Emazonian?”
Her ears suddenly perked up, she heard the reporter talk from across the room.
Reporter: “―Is that right? Are you sure Mr. Clive?”
Mr. Clive: “I was told so myself, Lord Xuth will personally relay what happened tomorrow. His speech will take place on these very school grounds, and he encourages all to come and take witness.”
Reporter: “Well, you heard it here first folks, Lord Xuth is going to comment on the events that transpired here tomo―”
Aurora didn’t listen to the rest of the interview, she was covered in a cold sweat.
“T-tomorrow? What will he… What could he even say?”
Arian’s daily routine was practically set in stone. He would wake, get ready, wake his mother, and then prepare them both food before leaving for school. Being an X grade meant he would be compensated for going to certain schools, such as the high school he was in now. However, this didn’t mean they lived luxuriously, the financial aid barely covered their living expenses, and Arian would often need to take up part-time jobs just to make ends meet. This made sense since his mother was incapable of working, lately, she’d even developed a sort of illness. The doctors insisted that it was brought on by her mental state and that there was not much they could do. And so she remained in bed for most of the day, only getting up occasionally to wash and eat, almost exclusively when Arian told her to. The only times he talked to her were either when the food was ready, or when her bath was. The guilt he felt over her sorry state had clouded whatever love he had, his heart was completely frozen over. Everything was the same that day, neither spoke while eating, the only difference was Arian’s expression. He wasn’t in his usual indifferent and timid mood, his face didn’t betray his temperament for a second. Arian was absolutely furious.
(What was the point of it all now?)
(He was favored by the Gods but… In the end what came of it?!)
Most of all, he was angry at Eion himself, perhaps he knew in his soul that Eion had brought about his own death. He didn’t stop thinking of who the other student could’ve been, but his mind did linger for a second on Tifon, and at that moment it dawned on him.
(There were two suspected missing, but only Eion was presumed dead?)
(Who could’ve been strong enough to have taken him down?)
(Could they have just taken him by surprise? While he wasn’t expecting it?)
But that didn't quite fit the scenario. Since the murder had taken place behind the school, it must’ve been a premeditated encounter.
He suddenly stopped eating, overcome with anger, he left as if he was prepared to murder someone. He got up and walked away from the dinner table, his mother barely even glanced at him as he went to the living room. Flicking through the TV he noticed all the channels had the same Breaking News sidebar under them.
(…? What?!)
‘Lord Xuth, famed entrepreneur and bioengineer, gives comment on his son’s death tomorrow afternoon at―’
Arian decided straight away that he needed to know the truth.
And so the two made their choices, in that moment, their fates had already been decided.
The first chapter in our 2nd Volume is finally out! As always, regular updates are guaranteed. What thoughts do you have about our characters as the story moves into its second stage? You know, hopefully, none of your favorites die...
The day had finally come, preparations for the speech required some beforehand maintenance, therefore school was canceled for that day as well. It would be an understatement to say Aurora and Arian were not the only ones looking forward to the Lord’s declamation. In fact, entire crowds had formed well before the oration was to take place. No one knew what to anticipate from the Lord. Some fancied he’d make a heartwrenching speech dedicated to his fallen son, and others still, thought he’d twist the tragedy into some business proposal. Only one thing could be said for certain of the public's initial thoughts: none were expecting the speech that would follow. (It's almost time now.) Arian couldn’t wait for a second longer. He needed answers, or rather, needed his assumptions to be validated. He got ready to set off so he’d just make the event, knowing that if he went any sooner the media would jump at the opportunity to interview him. Hopefully, they’d be too engrossed in the Lord’s sp
ΔΔΔ: “Hey! Hold up for a sec Arian!”Arian had just left the campus when he heard a voice calling out to him from behind.Arian: “Palae? What… Why have you come here?”Palae: “Isn’t it obvious, come on I came after you!”Arian: “What they said is probably right, you know… Eion had hate in his soul, maybe he did-”Sensing his growing doubt Palae immediately interposed: Palae: “Maybe so, but what the Lord did after wasn’t right. He shouldn’t have come after you just because you were an X grade, he just used you as a way of pushing his agenda.”Arian: “What is he doing all of this for?”Palae: “I’m not entirely sure, but one thing’s for certain. He really wants them all angry.”“Come on, let's get out of here.”Arian: “?! And where are we going exact-”Arian didn’t even get a chance to question her as Palae grabbed onto his arm and took (read: dragged) him away.(They’re all… They’re practically worshipping him already.)Aurora looked on from a distance at the sight.(They keep cheering
(What does the old man have planned I wonder.)After having stood in the same spot for over 5 minutes I finally saw the Lord coming back.Lord Xuth: “My boy, sorry for the inconvenience, but we’re all ready for you now.”Alcaeus: “What do you mean?”Lord Xuth: “Well, I know we’ve kept you on ice for some time already, therefore I’ve seen to the arrangements. We’ll be conducting your very first fitness survey, so to speak.”I had no idea my capabilities were in question, moreover by someone in such a state as this geezer before me.Alcaeus: “Is my fitness in question?”Lord Xuth: “Oh, Heavens no. This is simply so we can measure them more effectively.”I hadn’t the energy to waste on mistrusting the old man, he’d given me no reason to doubt him before so I decided to play along with his little game.He led me to the experiment chambers, afterward, we came upon an underground entrance. It seemed to lead to an arena.Lord Xuth: “Here we are then, we’ll be watching you from above. Oh, and
Aurora: “You must be crazy.”Everyone, except a single brave soul, slumped over instantly at Palae’s proposal.Arian: “I understand regular training with each other, but sparring? I’m not one to boast but the difference in capabilities is…”Aurora: “… I’m going to have to agree with Arian, I mean what’s even the point if we just keep losing against him for our entire training session.”Mitsuno: “Awe… I was looking forward to it Palae…”Mitsuno abruptly embraced her, although she was attempting to comfort her, she was obviously more upset than anyone.Palae: “Okay, hold up then. What if it were all of us against Arian.”Aurora: “I’ll just speak for myself in this matter, I’m definitely more of a hindrance in a fight than an advantage.”Arian: “I’m afraid even that wouldn’t change much…”Palae: “Hey! What’re you two on about, if we can’t even hold Arian off how are we supposed to beat Tifon?!”“And besides Aurora do you intend to sit out the actual fight too?”Mitsuno: “Exactly!”(She d
Arian: “Ahhh…Haah…”Palae: “I’m… Gonna need a minute here-”The words hadn’t even escaped her mouth before Palae suddenly dropped down to the floor, completely exhausted.Aurora: “Come on, people! We have to keep at it or else we won’t get anywhere.”Arian: “That… Seems easier… For you to say, but…”Arian couldn’t even finish his sentence, he was too preoccupied with just catching his breath. It was already getting pretty late. The school was supposed to be locked down for the day after the rally ended, but Aurora managed to convince the guard to leave locking up to them after they had finished training. ‘Getting ready to fight against those devil X grades’ and all.Mitsuno: “Aurora’s right, you guys! How many times do you think this excuse is going to work?! We have to make the most of it!”Aurora: “I appreciate it, Mitsu, but I don’t really think the hate for an entire group of people dissipates so quickly.”“Speaking of which, Arian… How are you going to make it through school afte
I had been dragged here by the commandant, someone I thought I’d killed all but an hour ago. The old man ended up agreeing with her initiative, apparently, it’ll bring up my reputation. I don’t see why that matters though, I’m still their God, and they’re still mortals, why should I have to earn their admiration?I made my way to my opponent, the commandant had just called him an X grade. That means he has a powerful active Boon, I wonder whose favor he’s got tucked in there. As I got into the arena I sensed his malice, he was bloodthirsty. I’d gotten well acquainted with that energy after dueling the commandant.Alcaeus: “It would be wise of you not to go into this blind with wrath, it dulls the senses.”Arian: “I did not expect you to understand emotions, what with you being a glorified toaster.”Arian was boiling over, he could barely hold on to his senses every time that murderer opened his mouth. They readied themselves, but all Alcaeus did was slightly raise his hands and arch f
(Who… Am I?) His view was darkened, almost as if purposefully concealed. But though he saw nothing, felt nothing, and thought of nothing, he still dreamt. He dreamt of nonexistent memories, life-changing events, and impossible friends. There could be no truth to what he saw, he trusted none of it. But the feeling, it felt real. Every so often his dream would end, and the nightmare would begin. All those he loved, his friends, his family, they’d all suddenly vanish. He would be left with nothing, nothing but those flames. The fires would consume him, the blaze would dissolve everything he had but a moment ago in an instant, gnawing away even at him. The pain was maddening, but after a time those flames would fade away too, nothing would remain in their wake, just darkness. All the memories that he had treasured before became foreign to him then, the emptiness erased everything he knew. And then it would start again. All the memories would flood in, then be ravaged by fire, and then
(…How are they still asleep?!)Aurora had woken up just a bit ago, after barely getting any sleep for that matter. However, much was different for her compatriots. Having been asleep since they came, neither had woken all night, and to top it all off, neither showed any sign of waking soon either.Although she was tired from her restless sleep, Aurora’s injuries were inconsequential. Even before she was tended to at most she had a few cuts and bruises, all that was left now was a dull ache around her shoulders.(Since I barely even qualify as injured, it probably wouldn’t be too wrong of me to just leave.)As Aurora got up from her bed, she glanced at those with her.Arian’s arm had been healed, but because the pain would still linger for some time he needed to wear a cast to limit his motion. Palae on the other hand was seriously bruised, both her heels had gone through serious trauma, and one had even been disjointed. Now although she’d been healed, she wouldn’t be allowed to walk f
