A Shining Start

Peter Campbell, a name that resonated with prestige at Mercer Comprehensive College. Even though I hoped for a unique high school experience, I couldn't quite define what I was wishing for. Nevertheless, I'm starting to enjoy the way things are going, and I definitely don't want it to end.

I gained a lot of popularity in school, and the principal often called me up to the podium to set an example and offer words of encouragement to my fellow students.

I represented my school in various competitions and consistently brought home trophies and medals.

Most students liked me, although not everyone. Some envied my achievements, while others resented me because their crushes seemed to be drawn to me without any effort on my part.

My school days were full of fun. Being both academically gifted and good-looking with a cute baby face made it easy for girls to admire me. I never turned down an opportunity to make friends.

I didn't have a steady girlfriend because many girls just wanted to be around me, and I didn't mind at all.

They approached me, and I welcomed them with open arms, regardless of what their admirers thought.

That's one of the perks of being a charming nerd like me. I'm not trying to boast, well, maybe just a little.

It turns out my prayers are being answered already. Unlike my father and grandfather, who struggled to get into a university, I received a scholarship from one of the country's wealthiest institutions.

I believe God truly answered all our prayers because this is an unprecedented opportunity in my family's history. I was thrilled when I received the news and could hardly believe it until I held the acceptance letter in my hands.

When I shared this news with my parents, they were overjoyed and couldn't contain their excitement, spreading the word to their friends. My schoolmates were equally thrilled because of the prestigious reputation of Berrocks University.

Berrocks University isn't just any institution; it's designed for affluent students. The fact that I, from a modest background, had received a scholarship from such a renowned university meant the world to me.

Preparations for my journey to this esteemed institution began in earnest. My parents worked tirelessly to ensure my comfort and well-being, recognizing the difference between the world I was leaving and the one I was entering. My father even took on extra work to save up more money.

I told my parents not to worry about school expenses since the scholarship covered most of it. I didn't want them to sacrifice their well-being.

However, my dad said, "I know what I'm saying, son. You're entering the real world. The world you've known here is nothing compared to what you'll experience there. We don't want you to get lost; it's a parent's duty."

My father's words carried weight, and I understood that he must have had experiences that shaped his caution. This renewed my determination to succeed, not just for myself but to make my family proud and break the cycle that seemed to have plagued us for generations.

Generations had suffered from the same fate in my family – a promising start in academics followed by struggles in the real world. My grandfather had tried and failed, as had my father, but I was determined to be the one to change that trajectory. The cycle would end with me; I wouldn't allow my family to face the same challenges.

After months of preparations, my parents finally called me for a heart-to-heart discussion before my departure to what my father termed the "real world." They warned me of the differences I would encounter, urging me to be cautious about the company I kept and reminding me of our family's background.

"Son, you're going to a place you've never been before, with people whose lifestyle is far different from ours," my mom said. "Please, be cautious, remember your identity and our family's values. If you ever need anything, don't hesitate to reach out."

My dad added, "Peter, I'm glad you had the chance to learn about your grandfather's experiences before he passed. Don't underestimate the world; it's not what it seems. The world can be challenging, and if you're not careful, things can turn sour.”

“I once underestimated the world, and look where it got me. I ended up as a commercial bus driver, and I don't want that for you. The world may seem ordinary, but it's far from it; you'll face numerous challenges.”

“But with a determined purpose, you'll succeed. I know you're intelligent, son, and I'm extremely proud of you. You'll encounter people who will try to tempt and intimidate you, that's just how some people are. Stand your ground, show them your background, and never be ashamed of it; be proud of who you are. Don't try to be someone you're not; let them see the real you."

I assured them, "Thank you, Mom, thank you, Dad. I deeply appreciate all you've done for me. I promise I won't let you down; I'll always make you proud, and I'll never bring shame to our family."

My dad replied, "I know, son. May God be with you."

The next day, I gathered my belongings and loaded them into my father's bus, ready to embark on this new adventure. I had only experienced one side of this vast world, and I hoped the other part wouldn't be as daunting.
